Executive Summary Finishes Progress SPOTLIGHT ON SAFETY Everyday an estimated 1,000 eye injuries occur in U.S. workplaces. The financial cost of these injuries is enormous – more than $300 million per year in lost production time, medical expenses and worker’s compensation. However, no dollar figure can adequately reflect the personal toll these accidents take on the injured workers. Because of the high frequency of eye injuries on construction sites, Elzinga & Volkers requires all tradespeople and visitors to wear OSHA approved safety glasses while on-site.
With the lovely Michigan weather we are experiencing, we are truly blessed to be finishing up the interior portion of Lodge II. We are nearing the fourth month of construction, and the project is progressing nicely. Over the past few months we have completed a multitude of activities with many more on the way. We are in the middle of installing the finishes throughout the interior of the building, which will define the living spaces and make the building feel like home. It’s refreshing to see paint on the walls and the flooring being laid.

Now that the snow is melting, we will begin the exterior work on the building. We will pour the new concrete sidewalks in the back of the building and near the new front entrance. The team chose to wait until the spring so that we could protect the concrete from cracking. With the cold weather that we were experiencing, the team was afraid of the ground freezing, which could have cracked the concrete before it had a chance to procure. In this phase, the parking lot will undergo repairs as well and Vibrant Life’s landscape architect will continue to work on his final drawings. All of the exterior work will aid in the transformation of Lodge II. - John Parker, Project Manager jparker@elzinga-volkers.com

Look Ahead
The interior finishes are well underway, and the trim installation continues. The lounge areas will have wainscoting, which will really make the area look sharp. The kitchenette cabinetry will be delivered to the site by the end of March, and the spa room ceramic tile will be installed in a couple of weeks. The fire sprinkler heads are being dropped through the ceiling for the next couple of weeks. Painting continues as handrails are installed and door frames are placed. All of the carpet and bathroom flooring will be installed this month. The fireplace is installed, and we are awaiting the handsome stone that will be installed around it. - Julie Cole, Project Coordinator juliec@elzinga-volkers.com
