Mi padre, Max Bersamin, inmigró de las Filipinas y fue contratado, antes del programa Bracero, para trabajar en los campos agrícolas de California. Mi padre trabajó cincuenta años como campesino. La única razón por la cual dejó el campo fue porque comenzó a desmayarse mientras trabajaba. Mi madre, Victoria Quintero Bersamin, es de Mezcatitlan, Sinaloa, México. Ella vino a los Estados Unidos como persona indocumentada cuando conoció a mi padre en Calexico, California. Se mudaron a Watsonville y mi madre trabajó en el campo y fábricas de conserva de Watsonville por aproximadamente cuarenta años. Conforme crecía, vivía la vida de un hijo de dos trabajadores inmigrantes. Mis padres se levantaban muy temprano todas las mañanas para preparar su desayuno y almuerzo. Recuerdo que me levantaba con la música tradicional ranchera mexicana y escuchaba que mis padres se estaban preparando para su trabajo. Mi padre se iba a trabajar antes de que saliera el sol, y regresaba a casa después de la puesta del sol. Mi madre en ocasiones trabajaba hasta 16 horas, ya que trabajaba dos turnos consecutivos de ocho horas en las fábricas de conserva. Cuando aún era un niño, comencé a trabajar con mi padre mientras él regaba los campos. Después, cuando era un adolescente, durante los veranos trabajé con mis primos desherbando los campos de lechuga. Mientras trabajaba en el campo, cuando no me encontraba escuchando música o platicando con mis primos, recuerdo ver coches recreacionales en la carretera llenos de familias que viajaban a algún lugar para disfrutar las vacaciones de verano. Recuerdo que me preguntaba a dónde iban las familias y cómo las familias poseían los recursos financieros para no tener que trabajar durante los veranos y poder viajar a lugares divertidos. Conforme crecí, me di cuenta que en este país democrático también existía la injusticia. La sociedad devaluaba a la gente trabajadora porque la identificaba como clase social inferior, mientras mostraba respeto, oportunidades y conexiones para los que se encontraban en la parte superior de la clase social. Yo sabía que esto no era correcto porque las familias que yo conocía, todas trabajaban en el campo o en fábricas de conserva y merecían el mismo respeto, honor y riqueza que aquellos que se encontraban en la parte superior de la clase social. Me di cuenta de que muchos eran ricos por accidente, y no porque trabajaban tan arduamente como los de la clase trabajadora. Viendo tales eventos, intenté averiguar cómo era que algunos de la clase trabajadora podían avanzar hacia la clase media y de esta manera

progresar socialmente y obtener riqueza. Encontré mi inspiración en Abraham Lincoln y Benito Juárez, los cuales comenzaron como niños sin educación y como hombres se auto educaron para después liderar a sus naciones. También encontré mi inspiración en Emiliano Zapata y Cesar Chávez, ya que ellos usaron su conocimiento para llevar sus comunidades a obtener justicia social e igualdad. Me di cuenta que la educación era el gran igualador. Aquí en los Estados Unidos yo podía usar la educación para comenzar a entender la sociedad establecida por los anglos y de esta manera comenzar a subir de posición social. Poco a poco me di cuenta de que la única ventaja que los anglos tenían sobre las familias inmigrantes era que ellos ya tenían generaciones establecidas en los Estados Unidos y habían obtenido educación y capital. Sabía que con consejería académica, mi comunidad podía lograr lo mismo y así escalar niveles sociales. Comencé mi educación post-secundaria y me di cuenta que para que mi comunidad progresara, necesitaba ser educada. Después de graduarme de la preparatoria de Watsonville continué con mis estudios en el Colegio Cabrillo. Asistí al Colegio Cabrillo por aproximadamente cuatro años, tratando de sobrellevar mis propias dudas en cuanto a mi lugar en esta sociedad como un joven Latino. Terminé mis años en el colegio y decidí asistir a una universidad donde se había muchos estudiantes Latinos. Me mudé a Los Ángeles y me inscribí en la Universidad de California (UC) Irvine. Durante mi estancia en la universidad, estaba intentando obtener un conocimiento de mi mismo como miembro de una minoría sub-representada (Latinos en los 1980’s) y un conocimiento más profundo de mi mismo como individuo. En retrospectiva, estaba participando en la búsqueda de mi identidad como Latino y norteamericano y qué papel jugaba mi comunidad en relación a la sociedad de ese tiempo. Lo que descubrí es que a pesar de que nuestra comunidad Mexicana estaba creciendo día con día, especialmente después del programa de amnistía de Reagan (IRCA), nosotros como pueblo éramos considerados educacionalmente, económicamente y políticamente como muy débil. Es por medio de la educación nuestra comunidad Mexicana desarrollaría poder e influencia en este país.

Durante mi estancia en la universidad trabajé en el reclutamiento de estudiantes de bajos i n g r e s o s y sub-representados en las preparatorias y colegios comunitarios. Después de graduarme de la universidad en 1985, trabajé para el programa Extensión de Oportunidades, Programas y Servicios (EOPS) en el Colegio Hartnell por tres años mientras asistía a la Universidad Estatal de San José (SJSU) para obtener mi credencial como consejero académico. Posteriormente trabajé como consejero del programa migrante por varios años para el Programa Migrante del Condado de Monterey en Castroville. En mi capacidad como consejero académico, pude enviar a muchos estudiantes migrantes a la universidad, incluyendo a los primeros estudiantes migrantes a la Universidad de California (UC) y la Universidad de Stanford. También apoyé a coordinar programas académicos durante el verano tal como el programa Yo Puedo en la Universidad de California San Cruz (UCSC). Obtuve mi maestría en educación, con un énfasis en administración educacional, en la Universidad de Stanford. Fue en la Universidad de Stanford en donde fui muy afortunado al conocer a un profesor el cual me motivó a solicitar a la Universidad de Arizona, en el colegio de educación de Tucson. El profesor me dijo que siendo yo un hijo de campesinos, se lo debía a mi comunidad en lograr un doctorado en filosofía (PhD). Cada vez que me iba de Watsonville a continuar con mi educación, mi familia, y en especial mi

madre siempre me apoyaba en mis decisiones, a pesar de que ella necesitaba el apoyo de su único hijo varón. Mi madre fue y sigue siendo mi inspiración y como mujer fuerte mexicana, ella me inspiró a servir a mi comunidad y elevar la comunidad inmigrante mexicana.

He trabajado en diferentes posiciones desde que terminé mis estudios en Arizona. He sido profesor en la Universidad Estatal de Fresno, he trabajado en la Universidad de California Santa Cruz, y en la Universidad Estatal de Monterey Bay (CSUMB) trabajé para el Programa de Asistencia Colegial para Estudiantes Migrantes (CAMP) y actualmente trabajo en el Colegio Hartnell para el programa de apoyo estudiantil TRiO. En cada institución he trabajado como director de programas de reclutamiento y retención y todos han sido muy exitosos bajo mi liderazgo. En cada institución, he utilizado mi experiencia y educación para inspirar a los hijos de Latinos inmigrantes para que sobresalgan por si mismos por medio de la educación. También participé en la política a nivel local en Watsonville y en el 2006 me convertí en uno de los pocos Latinos de venir de una familia de campesinos en convertirme en alcalde de Watsonville, California. Yo fui el primer alcalde de Watsonville en tener descendencia Filipina. Mi madre estaba muy orgullosa de mi y estoy seguro que mi padre de origen Filipino, el cual falleció en 1996, también ha de haber estado muy orgulloso de mi. Bajo mi liderazgo como alcalde de Watsonville, la ciudad se convirtió en una ciudad santuario para la comunidad indocumentada. También participé en el desarrollo de nuevas viviendas para algunos de los residentes Latinos de más bajos recursos de Watsonville. Como un educador profesional, mi propósito es ayudar a la cantidad más grande de individuos a obtener su educación. Estimo que he enviado a cientos de Latinos al colegio y universidad durante los últimos veintisiete años. Tengo estudiantes que actualmente son médicos, trabajadores sociales, maestros, directores, profesores de universidad, y consejeros entre otras profesiones. Tal como lo había imaginado, ahora muchos de mis estudiantes se están preparando para enviar a sus propios hijos a la universidad. Esta segunda generación de estudiantes comenzará con más entendimiento y yo espero tendrán más éxito en resolver cuestiones que afligen a Latinos. Uno de los obstáculos que actualmente tengo es encontrar maneras de enviar a los estudiantes a la universidad ya que año tras año los costos s i gue n aum en tan d o. O tr o obstáculo que tengo es encontrar maneras para poder apoyar a los estudiantes indocumentados, a los que se conocen como Soñadores (Dreamers) y a los que no se identifican como Soñadores mientras intentan encontrar maneras de financiar su educación universitaria. Finalmente, el obstáculo mas grande es encontrar la manera de motivar a más familias Latinas a tener una mente académica en sus hogares para que así la universidad sea una expectativa desde muy temprana edad. Nosotros como comunidad Latina de origen Mexicano aún tenemos los niveles educacionales más bajos de este país, pero somos la mayoría en las escuelas de California. Se estima que en aproximadamente dentro de 46 años, los Latinos serán la mayoría en California. Como raza nos debemos educar para así realizar completamente nuestro destino como raza. Espero que Dios me siga bendiciendo con energía y más años de vida ya que me siento que estoy luchando contra el tiempo en preparar a la comunidad Latina de California a reclamar su destino. Paloma Revista despide este año, con un gran ser humano, que destaca grandemente por su humildad y bondad, no solo por motivar a nuestros jóvenes, sino porque también es el conductor y motor de ellos, por su pasión en todo lo que hace, es un gran honor nominarlo como Nuestro Orgullo Hispano eternamente.

I was born in Watsonville, California. My story should start with my parents, who immigrated to the United States to work and help my family survive. My father, Max Bersamin, immigrated from the Philippines and was hired before the Bracero program, to work in the agricultural fields of California. My father worked as a farmer for fifty years. The only reason he left was because he began to faint in the fields while working. My mother, Victoria Quintero Bersamin, is from Mezcatitlan, Sinaloa, MĂŠxico. She came to the United States as an undocumented person when she met my father in Calexico, California. They moved to Watsonville and my mother worked in the fields and canneries in Watsonville for about forty years. As I grew, I lived the life of a child of two migrant workers. My parents got up early every morning to prepare breakfast and lunch. I remember I got up to sound of traditional Mexican ranchera music and heard my parents as they prepared for work. My father worked before sunrise, and returned home after sunset. My mother sometimes worked up to 16 hours, working two consecutive shifts of eight hours. When I was a child, I started working with my father while he watered the fields. Then, during the summers when I was a teenager I worked with my cousins weeding lettuce fields. While working in the field when I was not listening to music or chatting with my cousins, I remember seeing recreational cars on the road full of families traveling somewhere to enjoy summer vacation. I remember wondering how families had the financial resources to avoid working during the summers and were able to travel to fun places. As I grew older, I realized in this democratic country injustice existed. Society devalued working people and identified them as part of an inferior social class, while society respected and gave opportunities for those who were part of high class. I knew this was not right because the families I knew, all working in the field or in canneries deserved the same respect, honor and wealth than those who were at the top of the class. I realized that many were rich by accident, not because they worked as hard as those of the working class. I tried to figure out why was it that some of the working class could move into the middle class and thus progress socially and gain wealth. I found my inspiration in Abraham Lincoln and Benito JuĂĄrez, who as children had no education and as self-educated men they led their nations. I also found inspiration in Emiliano Zapata and Cesar Chavez, as they used their knowledge to lead their communities to obtain social justice and equality. I realized that education is the great equalizer. Here in the US, I could use education to begin to understand society established by the anglos and thus begin to rise in status. Gradually I realized that the only advantage that some Anglos had over immigrant families was that they had been established for generations in the United States and had obtained an education and capital. I knew that with academic advising, my community could do the same and thus scale social levels. I started my post-secondary education and I realized that for my community progress meant education. After graduating from high school in Watsonville I continued my studies at Cabrillo College. I attended Cabrillo College for about four years, trying to overcome my own doubts about my place in this society as a young Latino. I finished my years in school and decided to attend university. I moved to Los

California (UC) Irvine. During my time in college, I was trying to get an understanding of myself as a member of an underrepresented minority group (Latinos in the 1980s) and a deeper knowledge of myself as an individual. In retrospect, I was finding my identity as a Latino and American and what role my community had on the society of that time. What I discovered is that although our Mexican community was growing day by day, especially after the Reagan amnesty program (IRCA), we as a people were considered weak educationally, economically and politically. It is through education that our Mexican community could develop power and influence in this country. During my time at the university I worked in recruiting low-income and underrepresented students from high schools and community colleges. After graduating from college in 1985, I worked for the Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) program at Hartnell College for three years while attending San Jose State University (SJSU) for my credentials as an academic counselor. Later I worked as director of the migrant program for several years for the Migrant Program Monterey County in Castroville. In my capacity as a counselor, I could send many migrant students to college, including the first migrant students to the University of California (UC) and Stanford University. I also supported and coordinate academic summer programs such as Yo Puedo at the University of California San Cruz (UCSC). I got my master's degree in education with an emphasis in educational administration from Stanford University. It was at Stanford University where I was fortunate enough to

meet a teacher who motivated me to apply to the University of Arizona in Tucson school education. The teacher told me that being a son of campesinos, I owed it to my community to earn a doctorate in philosophy (PhD). Every time I came to Watsonville to continue my education, my family, especially my mother was always supportive of my decisions, even though she needed the support of her only son. My mother was and is my inspiration. She is a strong Mexican woman, she has inspired me to serve my community and enhance our Mexican immigrant community. I have worked in different positions since I finished my studies in Arizona. I have been a professor at Fresno State University, I worked at the University of California Santa Cruz, and the State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB) worked for Program College Assistance Migrant Student (CAMP) and currently work at Hartnell College for TRiO student Support program. In each institution I worked as the director of recruitment and retention programs and all have been very successful under my leadership. In each institution, I used my experience and education to inspire children of Latino immigrants to excel through education. I also participated in politics locally in Watsonville and in 2006 I became one of the

few Latinos who came from a family of farmers to become the mayor of Watsonville, California. I was the first mayor of Watsonville of Filipino descendent. My mother was very proud of me and I am sure my father of Filipino origin, who died in 1996, also must have been very proud of me. Under my leadership as the mayor of Watsonville, the city became a sanctuary city for the undocumented community. I also participated in the development of new homes for the Latino low income residents. As a professional educator, my purpose is to help the largest number of individuals to obtain their education. I believe that I have sent hundreds of Latinos to college and universities for the past twenty-seven years. I have students that are now doctors, social workers, teachers, principals, university professors and counselors among other professions. As I had imagined, now many of my students are preparing to send their own children to college. This second generation of students will start with more understanding and I hope will be more successful in resolving issues that afflict Latinos. One of the obstacles now is finding ways to send students to the university since year after year costs continue to rise. Another obstacle now is finding ways to support undocumented students, who are known as Dreamers and those who do not identify as Dreamers while trying to find ways to finance their college education. Finally, the biggest obstacle is finding ways to motivate more Latino families to have an academic mind in their homes so that the university is an expectation from an early age. We as a Latino community of Mexican origin still have the lowest educational levels in this country, and we are the majority in California schools. It is estimated that within about 46 years, Latinos will be the majority in California. As a race we must educate ourselves in order to fully realize our destiny as a race. I hope God continues to bless me with energy and more years of life because I feel like I'm fighting against time to prepare the Latino community in California to claim its destiny.

Paloma Revista ends this year with an incredible human being who not only stands out because of his humility and helping out our youth, but also because he motivates and drives our youth to succeed, and for his passion in all that he does; it's a great honor to nominate him as Our Orgullo Hispano for eternity.

La Basilica de San Pedro (ROMA)

La basilica de San Pedro alcanzó su aspecto actual gracias a la intervención de Carlo Maderno, que retomó la estructura basilical de cruz latina, y definió el aspecto escenográfico de la fachada. Los trabajos de la basílica terminaron en 1626 y consagrada solemnemente bajo el pontificado de Urbano VIII. Entre 1656 y 1667, por voluntad de Alejandro VII, Bernini proyectó y realizó el monumental pórtico de columnas de la Plaza de San Pedro, colocando en su centro el obelisco del siglo I a.C., situado originariamente, en el centro del circo de Calígula, lugar del martirio de san Pedro. En 1585, el obelisco fue trasladado por Domenico Fontana y colocado en el lugar actual, siguiendo órdenes del papa Sixto V. La Basílica de San Pedro posee una capacidad de 20.000 fieles. Mide unos 190 metros de largo, el ancho de las tres naves es de 58 metros, la nave central tiene 45,50 metros de altura, hasta la cima de la bóveda, la cúpula alcanza unos 136 metros de altura hasta la cruz; el interior, caracterizado por grandiosas decoraciones en mosaico, constituye el precioso joyero que custodia algunas de las más célebres obras de arte del mundo, como el Baldaquino de Bernini y la estatua de la Piedad de Miguel Ángel. +++

Además al finalizar la semana reflexionaré cuan feliz me hizo el ser bueno y a cuántas personas di también felicidad. ¿No valdría la pena seguir así aunque acabe el adviento? 4) TIEMPO DE ALEGRÍA - ¡Todo preparado en la casa! Ahora es tiempo de pensar en EL INVITADO. El invitado es nada más y nada menos que Jesucristo, el hijo de Dios. - La más grande prueba de que Dios nos ama infinitamente, es haber mandado a su hijo Jesús al mundo para salvarnos. He de reflexionar, que gracias a su venida es que yo podré un día ir al cielo. - El Adviento es entonces y sobretodo un tiempo de alegría profunda. - Si te fijas, todos los que participaron de cerca en el nacimiento de Jesús: San José, la Virgen María, los pastores, los santos reyes, todos estaban alegres. - De igual manera mi vida debe ser también como un Adviento - Mi alegría no debe depender de las cosas de la tierra: noticias agradables, salud, tranquilidad, desahogo económico para sacar la familia adelante, etc. La verdadera alegría cristiana, esa que trae una paz y serenidad que nadie puede quitar, sólo la tiene aquel hombre que logra escapar de si mismo, cuando ama a los demás y hace la v o l u n t a d d e D i o s . - Este Adviento trataré de vivir esta alegría, con una sonrisa, una palabra cordial, un pequeño elogio, llevar alegría a un mundo que está triste porque se va alejando de Dios.LA CORONA DE ADVIENTO - Existe la tradición de hacer en casa una "Corona de Adviento", que es un círculo de follaje verde (pino, abeto o hiedra), envuelta con un listón rojo y en cuyo centro se colocan 4 velas, para que la familia encienda una cada domingo de Adviento mientras hace oración. El círculo simboliza la eternidad, el color verde simboliza la vida y la esperanza. El listón rojo significa el amor de Dios que nos envuelve y también nuestro amor que espera con ansiedad el nacimiento del Hijo de Dios. La luz de las velas simboliza nuestra fe.

SCHOOL BOY: A MEMOIR Chapter 8: I Dream You Can Dream

Right before I started school, I thought that by going to college and getting a degree, things were going to miraculously improve and heal. They did, sort of. I somehow believed within my own naiveté that with an education, all of my siblings were going to go to college, automatically, soon after, just like me. I thought they were going to have the same goals and dreams, as I was setting the example for them, and for a while I took this role model thing very seriously. I wanted my sisters and little brother to see this could be done. I wanted them to know they can dream, dream beyond Salinas, beyond Monterey County, beyond California, beyond the United States. I wanted them to realize that they were capable, smart enough, talented enough, and special enough to excel and achieve in life. I wanted them to aspire, at least to aspire and allow themselves to believe in the possibility to make their dreams comes true. I wanted them to realize that their dreams could be carried out and acted out beyond the confines of their imagination. They too could dream and achieve like the kids on TV, the kids with the nice clothes, individual bedrooms, happy parents, three warm meals a day around the table, always with the smiles, always like a family should be, according to our TV screens. I wanted them to see that despite the fact that things were not like our TV shows, we could still achieve our dreams. I wanted them to realize they could dream beyond, our parents did it, they dreamed beyond their small town realities in Mexico, it wasn’t easy for them, it came with a painful price, but they did it, they managed to dream beyond their birthplace in search of a better life for their family and themselves. They allowed themselves to believe in the possibly of their dreams, they allowed themselves to see that the dreams within their imaginations could one day become their reality. I always believed that if our parents could do it, we could too, this was so clear to me from a very early age. I firmly believed that no one, absolutely no one could ever tell me what I was capable of doing or achieving, I was not going to let anyone’s own personal experience in life determine mine. I was not going to allow some ones fear to fail interfere with my unstoppable will to succeed to push and achieve beyond my wildest imagination because some of the people who don’t achieve and succeed follow this past because long the way someone made them believe they were not good enough, smart enough, or were not even allowed to dream, they were not allowed to be more than what they thought they

could be. So many of my friends growing up never thought about themselves as college material, as the type of people who go to college and earn a decent living, they were set to work hard, all the time, for a minimum pay to live a minimum life. I never wanted a minimal life, I respect those who have it because they genuinely choose that life because to them that’s happiness, but its hard for me to understand those who chose to live a minimal life because they are afraid to fail they are afraid to try because, somewhere along the way they believed those people who did not believe in them, because they found the right amount of excuses to justify their lack of action, their lack to dream. I guess, what I’m trying to say is that for me, school meant a way out a way to dream beyond. It was a way to go beyond living a hotel for months on end, beyond no lunch money at school, it was beyond cold free lunches, it was beyond no money in college, it was beyond no gas money at home, no money for vacations, no money for entertainment as a family, no money for family dinners, no money for a decent home to raise a family, no parents because of work. I thought that with a B.A. I was going to heal all this, I was going to make things better, but I can’t. I haven’t been able to, but I dream, I still continue to dream and hope and wish every single day that one day this will be true, that my siblings and parents will live how they deserve. You see I always dreamed of going to school for my love to learn and because I swore to myself that once I had a degree my family would never experience pain. I believed that with a degree my mother was never going to be on the floor in tears, feeling hopeless. I believed that with a degree my stepfather was never going to be exploited or robbed of an equal pay. I believed that with a degree my two sisters were going to follow my path because with my example they were going to see that it could be done. I believed that with a degree my younger sisters and brother were going to have a better life. I believed that with a degree my extended family was going heal, and not pain. I believed that with a degree things would get better. In some ways they did, but in many others they didn’t. I still hope that one day my dream of a better tomorrow for all of those around me becomes a reality. I still dream that one day my family believes in the possibly of achieving their dreams.
