• “switching models” a plague that is hurting our industry. contracts must be respected. Models have the right to request a switch of managers and or agencies either by mutual consent of both parties of the agreement or by a judge decision. It is the models obligation to get a release of agreement from the court and not the managers/ mother agents.

Models with the supervision of managers must not leave agencies with debts and before switching agencies the models and managers must settle outstanding debts or reach an agreement for future settlement of debt.

Drafting a recommended “MCA” Manager Commission Agreement advised for all members. The agreement will set the basic fundamental rules and regulations of M.A.M.A open to negotiation and most certainly to negotiate the financial terms of the agreement. *it is strictly prohibited of any M.A.M.A. directors or members to mutually agree or set rates on commissions or fees.

• contracts/agreements between Managers and Models, MAMA will advise its members on the basic requirements for a proper manager representation agreement. this includes the right to represent the model, model career planning, model placement with partner agencies, negotiate on the models behalf and manage the model activities internationally.

M.A.M.A supports the initiatives of various organizations such such as the model alliance and join in making the model business and working conditions a better place for models especially for underage models.

M.A.M.A.’s, directors, members, volunteers, legal and financial consultants will be made available to consult members in order to guide and possibly resolve disputes or issues with the aim of reaching a mutually agreed bridging solution and thus offering the parties the ability to continue to work together.

Fashion Blogger: Does Fashion Still Do It Better?

As she was my partner in crime during more than five years, you're allowed to think I'm a little biased. But it's fair to say Maud Lemoine is a fashion fixture of her own kind. Painter at heart, fashionista by chance and a bit against her will, model scout in her free time, on/off member of social networks... Her activities related to fashion and modeling are as diverse as they are countless. Founder, editor in chief and heart and soul of Fashion Does It Better (FDIB), her blog, her baby, until the end of the project; she has also been a part of other ventures including Playing Fashion magazine and has her portrait in Scott Schumann's book. A bit silent since FDIB closed in June 2011, it was time for an update on the little mouse of the modeling world. Retired or preparing something, secretly, in background?

Tell us about the debuts. How it all started. Not to me, I know the story... the midnight train from Strasbourg that landed at five in the morning in Paris, the cheap hotel, the Louvre etc. But the readers might want to know who was behind the strange URL "mariemaud.com". What were your immediate impressions when you saw models for the first time? And how does one go from painting at home to travelling around the world for various fashion events?

It really started this way, totally by chance. Nothing was planned at all and I decided to go to Paris just the day before departure. At that time I already had this blog under another name (Fashion Meets Art) but after my trip, I literally declared that « Fashion Does It Better ».

I was tired of the local art scene and fashion gave me a true breath of fresh air. Only after this first fashion week, the blog, that was more a random collection of pictures till then, became a real online journal.

My first impressions when I saw models... Incredibly elegant creatures would be the best description I could make. Their faces were already inspirations for my paintings, with their distinctive beauty types but seeing them in person, how they move etc. was a totally different sensation.

For example, you understand a lot on what makes a good model when you get to watch them backstage or walking in the streets. You get to know where does the body language you see in editorials come from.

You've met a lot of people, big names included (I remember when you thought Ivan Bart was the doorman of IMG's offices in Paris!). Who were the most interesting encouters you've made during all these fashion weeks? Same for the models, who impressed you most and why?

[Laughs] Sure, visits at IMG belong to the most unforgettable moment.

Not only that time we saw Ivan Bart popping inside the room. But meeting with Dominique Caffin-Robert and Jeni Rose, who both always have tons of interesting stories to tell, was a pleasure each time we went for sushis at lunch. Actually, you don't see a lot of boring people among the scouts or agents. So, it would be unfair just to name a few. But I have very special memories of Duncan Ord from New York Models when he was sharing some old stories, talked about his favorite models since he started as an agent, how he hates the word « booker » or his description of Kristen McMenamy.

As for the models, Viktoriya Sasonkina will always have a special place in my heart. When I saw her for the first time, she wasn't famous as a model and it was at a very small show in Paris. I noticed her because of her very special way to move. Of course I couldn't have expected she'll grace the cover of Vogue Italia one day but when she started to work with Steven Meisel, I wasn't surprised at all. No way he wouldn't have fallen in love with the way she moves and poses. Plenty of others were also remarkable but if I have to name one more, it would be Alison Nix. Loads of positive energy, such a fantastic personality that totally translates into her work.

Talking about models... You were one of the only to believe in girls like Viktoriya Sasonkina, Edita Vilkeviciute or Eniko Mihalik when they were still unknown. It was that time nobody would trust a model who was considered too small, too curvy, too commercial, too old etc.

Makes me feel it takes more than an eye and some flair to find the next big thing, it also takes a lot of instinct. That raises an interesting question: What makes you fall for a face, what do you look first and what's the feeling when you see someone special? What has changed for the best since these days and what has remained pretty frustrating?

Just as I answered in the previous paragraph, the way a model moves and acts is probably the most striking part. Sometimes it's just a smirk, a smile, an expression.

It can be a very tiny detail but make the difference. On faces, I would say the eyes, the gaze. A lot of the emotions a face expresses comes straight from the eyes. Then, it doesn't always happen the same way. You have some models that seem immediately striking at first sight. Those, you know what kind of power they have. Others, you'll need more time, you'll have to look twice. Both processes are interesting and that's a part of the magic, that no story is truly similar to another.

The positive thing is that fashion is turning to women again, not teenagers. I've never understood how they could expect a teenager to channel a mature woman in editorials.

I'm fine with a 15-year-old girl posing in Teen Vogue, playing a role that suits her, but in several cases it was just not appropriate at all. And when I'm talking about women, it covers both the age and silhouette issues. Models will probably remain tall and lean but we have, fortunately, moved on from some unecessary extremes.

FDIB was your main project, your baby as you often said.

But you've also been involved in several "by-projects" such as writing for Playing Fashion, casting for photographers, contributing to forums, street or online scouting, running your personal blog, painting and I'm sure I'm missing two or three on that long list. Which of those is/was your favorite (except painting that seems almost like a necessity)?

I'm naturally attracted to image and anything having to do with it is a pleasure for me to work on, no matter if it's painting, photography or scouting. Or simply collecting beautiful pictures during my free time. I love everything that is visual and faces above all. It's something that has never left me, since my childhood when I was looking at all the people's faces in the bus, analyzing their features. But to be true, the most thrilling, except painting of course, is casting or scouting. The thrill of the discovery, the hunt for the right face.

You've travelled a lot during all these years (Berlin, London, Warsaw, Riga...) but the place you've stayed the longest was Paris, of course. Hours spent at the CafĂŠ Ruc in John Richmond jacket or shot in the third district by The Sartorialist for his book, you have a pretty accurate vision of what a fashion week can be. How does a Paris runways and backstages taste? What are the delights of seven days of relentless glamour, intense activity, constant rush and what makes you fed up sometimes?

INTERVIEW I would say my perception has evolved with time.

The shock of the new fades a little, for sure, and your own enthusiasm can also slow down after your tenth fashion week. Plus, one week or two running around with almost no time to have a decent lunch is exhausting. You have to juggle a lot too, because you don't want to miss this or that show and in the same time you have a heavy schedule filled with meetings. I don't know how some people manage to find time and energy to party after a day of fashion week. For me, it was only very rarely possible and I tend to be too much into what I'm doing to find a moment to chill.

But the changes in my own perception aren't all. When I started, most of the shows were at the Louvre in Paris, working conditions were better as the area was more quiet. Nowadays, you have so many streetstyle photographers, pro and amateurs. Before, when it wasn't a trend, it was a matter of passionate people.

These still exist but I feel they get drowned in the masses. At least, that's how I felt the last few times I went to the shows and, sometimes it's just insane how they run after models just for one picture. Five or six photographers literally hunting one exhausted model who has to go to her next fitting... I don't feel good in such situations. I like to work in harmony.

You are from the internet generation, those who fell into fashion behind a computer screen. I remember well, at the beginning of FDIB, no one was really interested in young photographers (they were Chadwick Tyler or Eric Guillemain at that time...) and now every test shot can be published on one of the countless blogs or websites existing. Everyone wants exclusive materials before having a point of view. What's your point of view, then, on this "trend"? How does a pioneer like you see the evolution of the online fashion media?

Positive, negative, neutral, don't care at all?

It's a bit insane too. This neverending quest for exclusive materials. And it's not that hard -- anyone can ask young photographers to submit their work or, with a little more efforts, to be in touch with agencies to get unreleased digitals of a model.

But a lot of people concentrate only on the exclusive aspect and do not own any point of view, strictly speaking. I have the feeling some of them mostly want to ÂŤ be a part of it Âť while it would be more interesting if they had something to say. There are indeed websites that are both well documented, regularly updated and share a real opinion on the business. But they seem too rare, at least for my taste. Opening a blog and posting pictures and a few words is as easy as abc, that's why you'll see so many blogs and sites dedicated to fashion and models. Let's concentrate on those about models only, as fashion is to large as a whole.

Modeling, when you think of it, is just a small part of the big thing that is fashion, And you'll see hundreds of online pages on that topic, a lot of them that aim to be exclusive sources of visuals, that want to be the first or the only to show these or that contents.

Quantity makes it hard to follow and quality suffers.

All in all, I wouldn't consider this evolution as positive or negative and just say it has positive sides and negative sides. The good part is how easy you have access now to a lot of materials, to archives especially. The bad one is how anyone can label his blog or site an online magazine and fill it with poorly written contents and mediocre photography.

What are you doing now? I know that's a basic question but you know you can't run away from it! Are you definitely retired from fashion blogging or do you nurture new projects for the upcoming months? Will we see, one day, another project by Maud Lemoine or does it belong to another era? I might have the start of the answer: "never say never", right?

I'm working on three different art projects at the moment but I keep doing a bit of scouting and might have an idea for the fashion week to come. But a big project like FDIB takes a lot of time and I'm more into diversity right now to get involved in something similar to FDIB. Despite that the idea is thrilling, I'm rather up for casual collaborations or contributions.

And to take more time to travel again. This being said and you have it right, never say never and who knows what I'll be working on next week !
