is here! The modeling business is one of the most prestige and visual businesses in the world, a dream of many young girls and boys and an inspiration for millions. A serious business for models, agencies, managers mainly a profitable business tool to promote brands, designers and magazines. Since its inception in the 1940's the modeling business has expanded globally and today with advanced technology model managers can find models and introduce the models within seconds to partner agencies around the globe. With a large and growing community of managers (scouts) and models, the industry has become extremely competitive.

M.A.M.A unites Mother Agents/ “Managers” from around the globe in order to protect the interests of managers and models while keeping a fair balance with the interests of our partner retail agencies and agents and clients.

Listen to what mama tells you M.A.M.A.

If you haven’t done it yet join M.A.M.A. today Taking better care of our models and introducing a Model Hotline (www.m-a-m-a.org)

• “switching models” a plague that is hurting our industry. contracts must be respected. Models have the right to request a switch of managers and or agencies either by mutual consent of both parties of the agreement or by a judge decision. It is the models obligation to get a release of agreement from the court and not the managers/ mother agents. Models with the supervision of managers must not leave agencies with debts and before switching agencies the models and managers must settle outstanding debts or reach an agreement for future settlement of debt. • commissions and commission agreements. Drafting a recommended “MCA” Manager Commission Agreement advised for all members. The agreement will set the basic fundamental rules and regulations of M.A.M.A open to negotiation and most certainly to negotiate the financial terms of the agreement. *it is strictly prohibited of any M.A.M.A. directors or members to mutually agree or set rates on commissions or fees. • contracts/agreements between Managers and Models, MAMA will advise its members on the basic requirements for a proper manager representation agreement. this includes the right to represent the model, model career planning, model placement with partner agencies, negotiate on the models behalf and manage the model activities internationally. • model welfare as managers that have many of times exclusive world wide agreements with models, we must stay alert to the models welfare and wellbeing. M.A.M.A supports the initiatives of various organizations such such as the model alliance and join in making the model business and working conditions a better place for models especially for underage models. • bridging disputes between managers/models/ agents. M.A.M.A.’s, directors, members, volunteers, legal and financial consultants will be made available to consult members in order to guide and possibly resolve disputes or issues with the aim of reaching a mutually agreed bridging solution and thus offering the parties the ability to continue to work together.

INTERVIEW

The Instinctive

Wisdom of Youth:

An Interview with photographer Evan Browning Alexis Heim

Even if Evan Browning was born and raised in Brooklyn, his passion for photography took its roots much further on the map. In Buenos Aires, to be more exact, where he spent some time after his studies and fell in love with the camera. First into documentary photography, he has slowly but surely made his nest in fashion and went full-steam into portraits at the beginning of this year. Even if I started with regular questions, the conversation with Evan quickly turned into a deeper insight on several issues beginners -both photographers and modelshave to cope with: learning how to say no, how to keep your creative integrity and, for models, how to learn how your body and mind interact instead of trying to look exceptional at any price. If he doesn't have the long experience of a veteran of photography, his will to explore and experiment is worth several older others' wisdom.

You are based in New York City and that's the first time I interview a photographer who doesn't live in Europe. Until now, I have mostly selected lensmen from the East of the old continent, since the magazine's roots are in Lithuania. People from Romania or Ukraine, imagemakers who face issues when it comes to creativity as their countries don't have much room for fashion photography per se. When I have a glimpse at pictures from New York, I always feel a wind of freedom is blowing there, in comparison to places like Kiev or Bucharest. Even when it is simply a matter of test shots for models' portfolios, there seems to be a lot of experiment. What is the daily life of a fashion photographer in a city like yours? What are the requests from agencies, how do you cope with them without losing grip with your own aims? I'm not sure what other fashion photographers are doing here in NY, but my daily life consists of coffee, cliff bars, and a lot of time on the computer. People come to New York for obvious reasons. The opportunities to collaborate and progress are here. We have possibilities and freedoms that are unparallelled elsewhere, but if you really want to make it, you have to be hungry; hungrier than the photographer next to you on the subway. The requests differ by agency. They are businesses collaborating with image makers to suit their needs. Their requests are dependent on the aesthetic interests of the bookers, as well as the relationship a photographer has with them. This relationship can be formed by taking excellent photographs, but a lot of the time it's just a surreal cyber bond made up of excessive exclamation points and obnoxious positive reinforcement.

31 WWW.JURGITA.COM

INTERVIEW

I'm a photographer who wants to work with professionals who respect my creative integrity. In order to cope with the demands of agencies, you must teach yourself how to say no. This is all still very new to me, but once you find that person or those people that understand your passion and where you are going, the relationship between business and image maker becomes a lot more real. First silly question, what is your background and how did you become a photographer? How did you literally fall into fashion, what are Mr Evan Browning's roots and where is he heading to at the moment? I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. My folks, recently retired, were non-profit World Music concert producers here in New York. Now they are gardeners and readers. I completed a degree in Economics at a State University and began interviewing for jobs in the field. I was so disinterested in this kind of work, that I bought a one-way ticket to Buenos Aires and stayed until I was broke. Although I've been surrounded by cameras my entire life, this is where I bought my first. I developed a love for documentary photography there, and when I came home, I began trying other possibilities. I did a few test shoots in 2010, but don't feel as if I've 'fallen into it' until earlier this year. Â Another silly question maybe, but who is or was your favorite model(s)? You may have met a lot of rookies, what does make a newcomer special, what makes her stand out in a crowd of young sprouts all willing to make it to the next level? I have always thought photographers are those who can really spot potential, much more than scouts and agents. I'd love to have your viewpoint on what are the ingredients that separate a great model from the others.

32 WWW.JURGITA.COM

I've shot dozens of new girls, but one, Kristine Froseth, stands out amongst them all. Usually I tend to tell if a girl has 'it' the moment she walks in the door, but for Kristine it was from the first image. Every image came out like the 'between the shot' photo that photographers are always talking about. She has the ability to make every photograph organic rather than forced. I think this is the greatest obstacle for new comers, that they are trying so hard to look incredible, when they should really be focusing on learning how their mind and body interact, and allow the images to come naturally. These are the girls that will break through. They are the ones that depend less on luck, and have a versatile persona which makes them able to follow direction from any photographer. Â I've been quite impressed by your portraits of Masha Kirsanova, it seems there was a real connection between the model and the photographer, the muse and the artists. This is something I believe to be extremely important when it comes to photography. Could you tell us more about this session with Masha? Is there another memorable model for you? Actually I shot Masha for a look book, and the portrait images that you've seen were shot right afterwards for a few minutes. She was one of the most professional girls I've worked with. Other than her talent as a model and self confidence, what was most memorable about Masha was her interest and knowledge about photography. She mentioned that she had looked at my work before hand, and from that point on we had a mutual understanding. There was minimal direction, and we worked off of each other's mood.

33 WWW.JURGITA.COM

INTERVIEW

Staying on the same topic, is there any other face you'd love to work with? Or, why not, someone you'd love to work with again? I have been able to discuss this matter with many photographers and it's always amazing to hear who are their favorites and why. I recall talking about Ashley Smith with Chadwick Tyler, Tanya D with Eric Guillemain, Ronja Furrer with Nando Esparza. It's quite fantastic when all these guys who mostly express through images start to put words on their experiences with models that do genuinely inspire them or on the girls they would be glad to work with in the future. I would love to work with Codie Young. I admire every shoot she is featured in. Someone who I always want to work with again, over and over, is my friend Christina Makowski. We met for a test shoot a little over a year ago, and have worked on a couple things since, one being the most memorable shoot I've done. I dressed her in indigenous clothing of the Andes mountains, inspired by my travels in South America. We left the city with a garbage bag full of ponchos at about 4:30AM, and drove around some wooded areas of the Hudson Valley. People kept kicking us off their land so we found ourselves running to the car, driving off, and relocating before getting the shot a lot of the time. It's Christina's laid-back, 'down for whatever' attitude that makes me so inclined to want to collaborate with her, because I also share that mentality. In the end, the final product to this day is one that I am extremely proud of.

34 WWW.JURGITA.COM

There seems to be quite a gap between the younger generation of photographers and the ones working for the likes of Vogue & co. I'm going to be brutally honest but I have a huge preference for the first, those who takes pics, who makes pics with their guts rather than with the editor's guidelines. Those who capture moments, emotions, bits of life, and don't only rely on clothes and computer engineering to deliver eye-appealing visuals. This being said, having your work published is always a sort of achievement. Then, which type of magazines would you like to see your work in? Do these magazines exist already or are you dreaming hard of a new breed of fashion press? I haven't had that achievement just yet. I've had a few features online, but I don't see that as a milestone at all, being how convoluted the internet is. I can imagine the day coming soon where my work is printed, and in the meantime I set my goals very high. I'd love to be shooting for Grey, Acne Paper, All..., and The Room. My friend's father recently gave me some issues of Zoom magazine from the late 70's. I wish there were more publications like this being printed these days. A last one before I go back to bed to catch up with my sleep: are you currently working on some specific project? I have the little feeling we will see more of your photographs in a close future so, is it something already on the way or will we get a nice surprise soon? I'm working on a few projects right now. It's getting cold and there aren't many hours of daylight outside this time of year, so I'll be working in the studio quite a bit. You will see some new things from me very soon!

The suite’s decor is classic Margiela, with its white-onwhite-on-gray palette and trompe l’oeil playfulness: overlapping white calfskin rugs cover the bedroom floor, 12 white pillows are stitched to a white wall to form a headboard. The wallpaper in the sitting room is printed to look like the ghostly walls of a Haussmanian apartment, while the bathroom floor “tiles” are photo-printed pebbles. The only shock of color among the slip-covered 1950s chairs and mirrored cubes comes from a red hot-lips sofa. The effect is as calming as it is subtly disarming.

Fashion Cares About

Cara's Charisma

Alexis Heim There are models who made a name for themselves and... names that made themselves models. I know the wording might sound slightly strange yet it perfectly describes the two paths connecting modeling and celebrity. The first had to wait a while before their career reached a level that ensured them enough popularity to appeal to a broader audience, the others were considered as "socialites" (for various reasons, actually) prior to their first steps on the catwalk or their debuts in actual fashion magazines.

Still Do It Better?

One of the latest phenomenons that illustrates the second category is Cara Delevingne, who has just achieved a wonderful Spring Summer 2013 season walking in each of the four cities for designers ranging from Marc Jacobs to Oscar de la Renta, Matthew Williamson to Giles Deacon and, last but not least, Louis Vuitton to Chanel (plus several opening gigs and other great slots in Milan). Definitely worth a closer look. 74 WWW.JURGITA.COM

We know it, we know them. We know it as a fact and can't ignore who they are. Bearing a famous name like Dree Hemingway or members of the british fashion fixtures like Eliza Cummings, Edie Campbell or (even) Agyness Deyn, these models didn't arrive on catwalks and covers via the "regular" way. I've personally never cared if a model was an anonymous teenager scouted at the mall next door or if she came to fashion for some other reasons, always thought talent is what matters first and the most important is how a model can embody a character in an editorial. But, it seems some people aren't happy to see models enjoying a successful career without having belonged to the army of new faces before. I had no clue this was supposed to be a relevant criteria in this business and still think it's just an outsider's fantasy. Still, we live in a society where virtual life plays an important part and masses actually contribute to online buzz, which counts in fashion. So, I tried to understand why so many modeling enthusiasts are reluctant to Cara's work... versus why professionals seem to be fond of it.

BACKSTAGE

I don't think anyone can dismiss Dree Hemingway's brilliant collaboration with photographer Alasdair McLellan (just as an example among many others) and, despite you may think her rise went faster because she bears the name of her famous ancestor, her talent and abilities to model are just glossy paper proven. Same goes for Eliza Cummings who did well with Steven Meisel and a few more great lensmen. Same goes for Kate Upton and, before her, Agyness Deyn who both managed great careers for other reasons than walking sixty shows a season or landing an exclusive runway booking. Cara's sister, Poppy Delevingne, also falls into this category and, naturally, her own case is no different. What seems to differ is the response she gets, the amount of work piling up in her portfolio and the overall quality of it. Think of some Chanel advertising, an editorial in the edgy publication Centerfold Magazine, countless catwalk achievements and the cover of Style. Com's latest printed issue.

76 WWW.JURGITA.COM

The amount of work and, even, the prestige of it, can't be taken for the ultimate guarantee a model has actual talent for what she does. But when quality tops the two others, there is certainly no mystery about the potential that has been unveiled. The personality, the character, the little something that sets one girl apart from her runway-mates. May you like it or not, Cara has this small extra that can't get overlooked. The way she poses, smiles, grins, smirks or makes faces on backstage candids says a lot on what it can be. A supplement of spark for some, annoying gimmicks for the others... But in the end, difficult not to remember her and have an opinion on her looks and work.
