ASTHEN Ashten Majors born in San Antonio, TX and raised in Houston, TX. She began singing and performing live at the tender age of eight and soon realized her calling. She then began writing at the age of 13 and developed a love for penning her feelings and emotions. She broke out on the scene at The Juneteenth Festival at the young age of 16 and continued to work on her craft. She took a break from the music scene to be a mother. After her musical hiatus she decided to come back to the music scene stronger than ever with a better sense of self! Her goal is to be able to work alongside some of her favorite artists in the entertainment industry and to build a career doing what she loves most...singing and writing. Ashten’s new project, Sweet Nothings EP was released on Valentine’s Day 2016. This project was put together to give fans a taste of what’s to come as she works on her next album. Cherie Johnson

Cherie Johnson Cherie is known for her successful longevity acting career on Punky Brewster, that aired in the mid-eighties with very high ratings. She went on with her career in acting following another hit TV series Family Matters that aired almost a decade, she played the role as Laura Winslow best friend Maxine (Max). As an actress was it hard transforming into adulthood, did it make a difference to get movie roles? Its still very difficult. I realized if I wanted to continue my career I was going to have to create my own opportunities. Cherie tell me what keeps you going because you are such a busy woman? Ambition I have goals and they won’t get completed unless I complete them. You’ve written several books, as a writer is there a personal best? Peaches and Cream is my favorite. Why that one? Peaches isn’t what people expect from me. I despise being put in a box. The world tries to expect things from people they do not know instead of accepting what’s given. Peaches and Cream is my rebellion. She is a character I’d love to play in a film but Hollywood would never hire the little girl from Punky Brewster to do so.... As an actress, movie producer and writer, which do you enjoy doing the most? They all bring me balance. Acting is like my husband, producing is my “Mistor” the cheating on my husband has brought the passion back to my marriage and writing is my therapy that keeps my stable. So they all satisfy me in different ways I need them all at this point in my life to be fulfilled. You have a daughter, how old is she? She is very wise beyond her 2 years on the earth. She is reading she knows all the states in the USA all her planets and is bilingual. I know you didn’t ask all that but I am a proud mom. Is she your only child? No my daughter isn’t my only child she is the only I have carried. Do you want her to act as well? NO absolutely NOT! I picked my own career path and I want her to chose her own. I pray its not entertainment. Social media and the internet age has really taken the fun and joy out of a industry I love. Its no longer about the work. They have turned it into something else. I want her to go into a business that SHE is passionate about. Your career is Not your life.... Does she ever watch Mom at the peak of your acting career on the two sitcom’s Family Matters and Punky Brewster? She is too young to care about my past and too busy singing the theme song of my current talk show “Girlfriends and Champagne” her favorite line is lets sit down and talk about it! She will only watch things that sing on TV and I am not busting out in song or dance so shes not impressed. In 2K13 you experience racial profiling, can you tell me what happened? In short it was a date from hell with a man I have nothing to do with. Site seeing gone wrong and thanks to a cute blonde police officer with a Napolean complex I thought I was about to get killed next to a cotton field because I wanted to take a picture of cotton on the side of the highway. This cop has had multiple investigations and several paid leave vacations but because of his ties with local officers is always allowed back to work. South Carolina is still very racist and its something they accept. I will never spend a dime in that state.

Superstar Actress Role Model Writer You’ve been an advocate for the “Just Say No” drug prevention program, what made you become an advocate at such a young age? The campaign was started by a black lady in Oakland California named Linda Wilks who never gets her just do! They always say it was Nancy Regan but that’s untrue. After the show Punky Brewster talked about Just Say No Linda worked with the PR at NBC and invited Soleil and I to join the campaign and tour the USA. I’m from a small town in Pittsburgh PA where drugs destroyed my whole neighborhood after our steel mill closed. It was important for me to reach my generation at home the best way I knew how. As an actress airing on TV with such longevity you may hear rumors of an actress or actor dying, broke or on drugs how does that make you feel? I’ve heard all those rumors about myself! Rumors are just that rumors. Meaning untruth. I get very protective when people come to me about people they know nothing about. Its a very upsetting energy for me that I try to stay away from. Oprah Winfrey has a TV show, “Where Are They Now” have you or any of the cast from Punky Brewster or Family Matters ever appeared on the show? Honestly I don’t watch TV so I have never seen the show. I have no idea what half my old co-workers have appeared on but I have not been on it. You’re related to Marla Gibbs of The Jeffersons who played as Florence, the housekeeper. Does she have a role to play in your successful acting career? I am NOT related to Marla this is a rumor! The lady Susie Garret who played my grandmother on Punk Brewster was her step sister. So Miss Marla has never played a role in my career.

“ Social media and the internet age has really taken the fun and joy out of a industry I love “ I have to say before doing this interview, I scrolled through your Facebook page. I seen something that I need 10-day 10 pounds tell me about it. Aww the natural detox! No supplements, no products just natural God given foods. Many people don’t realize when it comes to food everything man touches he ruins. What we also forget is our bodies are made like a home. We have to take care of our foundation and it will take care of us. Our intestines is the root to so many health problems we need to keep it clean. Like a pipe in your house the sides need to be scraped or gunk will settle. Meat rots and develops pockets. We have all heard a apple a day keeps the Dr away. That’s because the apple peel scrapes the sides of your intestines and removes that gunk. All I am really offering is an education that I guarantee will have you off your fad diet yo-yos! What can we expect from Cherie Johnson in 2K17? Expect is such a strong word lol I will be doing much of the same a new book a couple more films and promoting my natural hair care line Wild Cherry www.WildCherryProducts.com

8 WAYS MEDITATION CAN IMPROVE YOUR LIFE By Kristine Crane for US News Shrimati Bhanu Narasimhan, a petite Indian woman wrapped in a bright fuchsia sari, has a soft voice but a big presence. She holds the rapt attention of some 100 people who have come to learn how to meditate at the Art of Living Center in the District of Columbia. The type of meditation she teaches is called Sahaj, Sanskrit for effortless. It’s a mantra-based meditation she advises doing twice a day for 20 minutes — before eating. “Mental hygiene,” Narasimhan calls it. Sahaj is just one type of meditation. Others are based on compassion, mindfulness, yoga and transcendentalism, among others. While their aims are different, they share common benefits. Here are eight of those. Meditation reduces stress. “Meditation is mind without agitation,” Narasimhan says. Stress creates agitation and is something most of us deal with on some level. And it’s increasing, given the rising use of anti-anxiety medications, notes Stanford University researcher Emma Seppälä. Meditation allows people to take charge of their own nervous system and emotions. “Studies have shown improved ability to [permanently] regulate emotions in the brain,” adds Seppälä, who is also the associate director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at Stanford. “It’s very empowering.” It improves concentration. “I’m more centered and focused in everything I do. I don’t find myself getting as distracted anymore,” says Sara Robinson of Indianapolis, who did the Sahaj course last February. The ER nurse and sky-diving instructor adds that multitasking is easier. At least one study has shown an improved ability to multitask, Seppälä says. “Meditation has been linked to a number of things that lead to increased ability to focus, memory … We’ve seen this at the level of the brain.” Greater concentration is related to the increased energy meditation provides. “It connects you with your real source of energy,” Narasimhan says. It encourages a healthy lifestyle. “I tend to want more things that are better for me,” Robinson says, adding that she eats more fresh foods and has cut out nearly all alcohol. She also stopped smoking. Susan Braden, who lives in Takoma Park, Maryland, and also did the Sahaj course, says the practice has made her apply the Hippocratic oath — “First, do no harm” — to herself. “You just want to put good things in your body,” she says. That means “closest to what’s natural. So if it doesn’t look like a tomato, I wouldn’t eat it.” Braden also gave up coffee, replacing it with tea. The practice increases self-awareness. Before Zaccai Free, a District of Columbia resident, began meditating in college two decades ago, he had a very short fuse – to the point, he says, of wanting to commit acts of violence. Meditation taught him to recognize his own anger and become more detached from it. It cleared his mind and calmed him down, he says. Mostly, “it made me more comfortable in my own skin,” adds Free, who does many types of meditation, including Sahaj, Agnihotra, laughter and walking meditations. “When you take more time to dive inside yourself, you are more comfortable showing who you are.”

It increases happiness. “Meditation puts you on the fast track to being happy,” says Ronnie Newman, director of research and health promotion for the Art of Living Foundation, the umbrella organization for the Sahaj meditation course. Studies have shown that brain signaling increases in the left side of the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for positive emotions, while activity decreases in the right side, responsible for negative emotions, Newman says. The other benefits of meditation, including increased self-awareness and acceptance, also contribute to improved Meditation increases acceptance. Braden was a high-profile senior policy advisor in the State Department, constantly on the go to trips around the world, until seven years ago, when she was struck by multiple sclerosis. She turned to meditation, and her world view flipped. “I have a disease which really brings you back to yourself,” Braden says. “Meditation helps me accept that. You explore your inner self and realize that’s just as big as traveling to Burma.” For Braden, learning to meditate has been harder than learning Arabic. “It’s a lifetime job. But it changes how you feel life, and it’s made it more enjoyable for me,” she says. It slows aging. Studies show that meditation changes brain physiology to slow aging. “Cognition seems to be preserved in meditators,” says Sara Lazar, a researcher at Harvard University. Lazar adds that meditators also have more gray matter – literally, more brain cells. Lazar’s colleague, Elizabeth Hoge, did a study that showed that meditators also have longer telomeres, the caps on chromosomes indicative of biological age (rather than chronological). That meditation lengthens life “may be a bit of a stretch,” Hoge says. “But there is something about meditation that is associated with longer telomeres … [perhaps that] it reduces stress and its effects on the body.” The practice benefits cardiovascular and immune health. Meditation induces relaxation, which increases the compound nitric oxide that causes blood vessels to open up and subsequently, blood pressure to drop. One study, published in 2008 in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, showed that 40 of 60 high blood pressure patients who started meditating could stop taking their blood pressure medication. Meditation also improves immunity. “I hardly ever get sick anymore,” Robinson says. “I don’t think I’ve had a cold since I started this.”

Lydia Harris Producer, author, entrepreneur, chef—Lady Boss—are but a few of the monikers worn by Lydia Harris while she has evolved her journey. Best known as co-founder of Death Row Records with ex-husband, Michael “Harry O” Harris, and Suge Knight; Harris proves she is the master of reinvention with a slew of fresh endeavors. Born of a closeknit and hardworking set of parents, the Houston native is long-driven by a work ethic that has pushed her beyond even her own expectations. If art imitates life then Cookie Lyons, the tempestuous character on TV’s “Empire” certainly mirrors Harris, the original Lady Boss. There are enough similarities for even Vanity Fair to draw the lines of riveting comparison. Harris, the author of “Married To The Game, A Story of Love and Waiting,” chronicles meeting her former husband in 1985, a courtship flush with lux living unlike any she’d known before, on through their later marriage and birth of their only daughter—all while he served a 28-year sentence. Her life took a dramatic turn once her husband heard her sing, which led to a recorded demo and a subsequent rendezvous with Dr. Dre and eventually Suge Knight. Rather than the anticipated music career for Lydia, the Harris’ and Knight started Godfather Entertainment, parent company to Death Row Records. With nominal business experience, Harris made a powerful intercessor for her incarcerated husband; putting in enough time and sweat to be awarded a significant stake in the label years later. As a good listener, she absorbed details needed for smart business moves. Underestimated as an attractive female in a male-dominated industry, throughout the early 90’s she still held her own and became a force behind artists willing to live and die for their dreams. By 2001, she was co-executive producer of “Welcome to Death Row” S. Leigh Savidge’s critically acclaimed documentary telling of the triumphs and decline of the label and the era.ing the torch to her daughter, LyDasia, who while in college on a tennis scholarship, also studies business management to sharpen her savvy as next generation female mogul. Currently, Harris has found renewed praise for her work as a trailblazer within the often-misogynistic field of rap. She has a National Geographic feature airing September 13, 2016 and a larger version of her compelling life story in the works, in addition to a new book. In July of 2016, she received an honorary distinction for her legendary contributions at the Go DJ Awards, Houston’s largest Hip Hop award show.

When Harris left the fray of the music world, she returned to native soil and reinvented herself using gifts she already possessed. Her catering enterprise grew out of her legendary feasts, served while also acting as den mother to the label’s rowdy roster of artists. Back in Houston, she answered a request to cater for a mental health facility, and an impressed doctor suggested she consider culinary school for professional footing in the field. This grew into serving five mental health facilities and drawing crowds to her savory menu daily. Harris also wisely invested in food trucks—a popular area attraction, leading to a boutique restaurant called Lydia’s Grill and Catering. All along, she maintained a vision for it that would one day run in tandem with her return to the entertainment industry; by feeding artists on major tours and via celebrity chefing. Harris’ strongest mission to date underscores empowerment of women. Having herself cracked an impossible glass ceiling as a music mogul within a male-dominated genre; she is an advocate who believes in all women’s possibilities. Surviving a tough journey with God-given skills and hard-won gumption, she carves a new purpose with them—not just in media but in the community. In this she spearheads an Oklahoma based nonprofit organization in partnership with city authorities that provides sustainable after-school programs for the youth. In recognition of her community support, October 22nd is being declared Lydia Harris Day in the city of Houston. Accepting her new direction with grace, and just as she did behind the scenes at Death Row Records with artists like Snoop Dog, Dre, and Tupac; Lydia Harris sets her focus on building superstar acts with life changing messages. By going at the industry with what she has learned—and earned, she now plays beauty to the beast in a dog-eat-dog business for new artists. With her efforts, a new generation will get an empowering example of how truly to be a boss.

7 CHEAP & FUN FAMILY VACATION IDEAS Here are some of the best ways to score a memorable trip on the cheap:

1. Plan a Staycation

Whether you visit a historical site, national forest, or a few local city hangouts, by booking lodging where you live and sticking close to home, you can get the vacation experience without the expense of travel. Look for cheap attractions and tours, and ask your hotel whether they offer a discount for local residents. One of the best places to find staycation deals is through group deal websites such as LivingSocial, Travelzoo, and Groupon. Most of these sites offer deep discounts on everything from hotels to food and activities. Doing something out of the ordinary, even if it’s close to home, can help create a vacation-like atmosphere without requiring an extravagant trip. Whether you choose to go camping at a nearby campsite, or you stay overnight in the city to check out the opening of a new museum, you don’t need to drive or fly to find a vacation spot.

2. Get Active

If you think about it, most of the attractions and events you pay for on vacation are passive activities. It costs a lot of money to catch a baseball game, go to the movies, see a play, or wander around a theme park, and yet, these activities don’t always lend themselves to family bonding. That’s why I favor active itineraries instead. Not only does a hike through a national forest or a bike ride through town cost a lot less than show tickets, these types of activities give you a chance to talk and connect with your family. Some active vacation ideas include: Hiking - RaftinG - Ropes courses - Zipline courses - Cycling - Camping - Geocaching

3. Book Through Owners

Hotels can be expensive, and some don’t even offer that many amenities. The trick to getting the most bang for your buck is to look for lodging that offers more than just a bed and a bathroom. I love the site Airbnb. It provides owners of condominiums and vacation homes the ability to list their properties for a lot less than you would spend through a traditional hotel website. For instance, a full-service condo listed on Airbnb by its owner in Miami Beach, Florida costs $134 per night, while a comparable hotel room in the same area costs upwards of $267 per night. You can specify the size and amenities of the lodging you’re looking for, and in most cases, you can score extra perks, such as a working kitchen and on-site gym. I love being able to work with the property owner instead of a hotel. In fact, my friends and I take a yearly girl’s trip to Park City, Utah and use Airbnb to find lodgings large enough to accommodate 15 women. This type of flexibility makes it an excellent resource for bigger families or family reunions. Other sites, such as VRBO, HomeAway, and FlipKey, offer similar services, so compare options and prices before you book to make sure you’re getting the best deal. Finally, read renter reviews before you book with a property owner – you want to make sure the property lives up to its hype.

4. Package Up

While it may seem more cost-effective to search separately for the best deals on airfare, car rentals, and lodging, I’ve found that you can save big by booking a full package. Online travel sites, such as Travelocity, Expedia, and Orbitz, offer many options, but you might want to check with a travel agent for package deals too. Some travel agents can offer killer deals you can’t find online.

5. Book Through Club Stores

It’s an unusual way to book a vacation, but club stores such as Costco offer vacation-planning services with great deals on attraction tickets. For instance, a Disneyland vacation package booked for November that includes park passes and lodging at the Paradise Pier Hotel costs $2,603 whether you book through Disney or through Costco. However, Costco members get more for their money, receiving benefits like a character dining experience, a $20 Disney gift card, and other goodies. Even if you don’t have a Costco club membership, you can browse options on the Costco Travel website. If you find a great deal through Costco or another club store, it might be worth the cost of membership to score discounts on travel, even if it’s just for one trip.

6. Visit the Beach Less Traveled

Beach vacations are basically the Holy Grail of family vacations. Sand, sun, relaxation, and family time all add up to a stress-reducing, memory-making experience. However, staying on premium beach real estate is going to cost you, particularly if you set your sights on popular vacation destinations. That doesn’t mean you have to skip the beach altogether. The United States offers 88,633 miles of coastline to explore, so you should be able to find something more cost-effective. Instead of heading to pricey Miami or Southern California, consider the gulf shore of Alabama or the beaches in Galveston, Texas. Or, skip the pricey vacation in Orange County, California for the laid-back vibe of San Mateo County, California. Other beaches include the Oregon and Washington coastlines, or the East Coast between South Carolina and northern Florida. A beachfront hotel in San Diego in July costs about $234 per night, while a beachfront condo on the Oregon Coast at the same time is about $100 per night – that alone is significant savings. In addition to less expensive lodging, less-frequented beaches feature lower-cost food and activities. If you really want an insider’s opinion, ask friends, family, and acquaintances who live near the water about their favorite spots. Getting a local opinion helps you avoid some of the pricey tourist traps while providing you with an authentic local experience. If you’re far from any beach, lake vacations are another option. My family loves to vacation on Lake Powell in southern Utah. There’s an entrance fee of about $30, then camping on the shore is free. The other expenses include food and fuel – totaling about $400 for a week in the sun. Check out areas like Lake Winnebago in Wisconsin, Lake Tahoe in Nevada, the Finger Lakes region of New York, and Lake Havasu in Arizona.

7. Work (on a Ranch) for the Weekend

Believe it or not, you can find cheap vacations at working farms and dude ranches all over the country. While it’s definitely a seasonal activity, think about how much your kids would love learning about farm life, collecting eggs, taking care of animals, and even horseback riding. And, since you earn your keep while staying on a working farm, it’s usually pretty cost-effective. These hands-on experiences feature rustic lodgings – usually a cabin or a room with bunks – and also provide meals you share with other families visiting the farm, giving you the chance to enjoy camaraderie with other suburban families. The Flying L Guest Ranch located just outside of San Antonio, Texas charges about $90 per day for adults and $40 for kids and teens to experience an all-inclusive vacation featuring horseback riding, swimming, and even miniature golf. New York City-area families can find a quick escape at the Malibu Ranch in Milford, Pennsylvania. Located about 75 miles outside of New York, this ranch offers weekend packages for $500 per family. While this may sound pricey, food and accommodations are included, along with attractions like a guest rodeo, fishing, a shooting range, cattle drives, and campfires for four. It’s an excellent way to expose your kids to new experiences without breaking the bank. Keep in mind that not all dude ranches are cheap vacation options. Boutique-style ranches can be seriously expensive, so make sure you add up the costs of food, lodging, and activities before you commit.

GEORGE

PHELPS

Skytrues has grown to be a household name. From social media to ads to even making special TV appearances, George “Goldenboy” Phelps, has become known for his artistic abilities to design unique frames to fit anyone’s style. George was a child prodigy with an artistic mind of his own. Art was always his first love... his second: Music. His teacher believed in his talent so much that he hosted his very first art exhibit at the tender age of twelve. His teacher said his talent will take him far, but George became more interested in his passion for music. Years later, after touring with a few celebrity musicians, the humble George came up with the idea of Skytrues while sitting in Harris County jail. God spoke to George about bettering his life, the life God has blessed him with. He visualized painting masterpieces on glasses. Once released, George started painting his personal pair of frames to show his creativity. He went to church and got a lot of positive feedback from the frames. One guy even offered to buy them from him. That’s when George sold his first pair of frames. Since that day, three years ago, George has blessed a plethora of major celebrities with his brand including the City of Houston’s Mayor Sylvester Turner, Dennis Rodman, boxing legend Mike Tyson, Congressman Sheila Jackson Lee, Rock& Roll Hall Of Famer & Legend George Clinton, R&B Divas star Angie Stone and Chante Moore, Paul Wall, Lil Flip, and Waka Flocka to name a few. “LaGhe’s passion for what she does began with her mother eclectic love of music”

LAGHE

MUSIC

Omaha Nebraska’s brown eyed beauty, LaGhe, has been a positive self focused

force behind her own attention grippingly confident yet uniquely classic type of HipHop and R&B style. Cultivating and air of sheer interest and enthusiasm, LaGhe’s straight talk topics and sweet harmonic melodies have been helping to bust the padlock off many opportunities left and right. LaGhe’s focal point with her music and persona is to depict the overall “female strength” knowledgably, sensibly, and maturely. Taking her bold Midwest breezy style with her wherever she goes, this siren has been known to each and every professional that she has met to have something undeniably elongating with her career. LaGhe’s flowing melodies and slick approach to her tracks make her uniquely vivid amongst the sea of clones today. It is time and refinement that is aiding LaGhe in her journey towards reaching full potential in becoming a respected female entity amongst her peers. Knowing that being a respected humble figure whose talent and hustle initially speaks for itself can push open many envelops, so her main goal for 2017 is to prove that sponsorship, branding, and a distribution deal are things not unfathomable to obtain. This year has opened to LaGhe with the opportunity to open for the legendary Easy E’s youngest son, E3, in January in Houston, TX and then within a series of other shows in other states she had the privilege to open for his oldest son Lil Easy in Lincoln, NE in February. Since then LaGhe has been in and out of many shows in many states and topped a few online charts such as “Number One Music” site for areas such as Farrell, PA. As she is in earshot of more and more states across the US LaGhe has decided to take her time with the release of her new album “Facelift”, to be released late August. To help hype a healthy buzz about the up and coming album LaGhe will be producing men’s and women’s Tee’s and accessories along with releasing singles from the later album ”Facelift UNWRAPPED” which will host a plethoria of versatile lyricists, tantalizing vocals, and videos for the visual journey. The overall plan is to seduce the masses with a facelift that they can appreciate. LaGhe’s passion for what she does began with her mother eclectic love of music and her own love for expression through words. As time passed she became more fluid with with her writing and it seemed only natural that both loves be poured into a fusion that would be flooded with value over time. Although LaGhe lacked confidence in the past to center stage some great opportunities, LaGhe was always blessed with a gift that moved people to supply support and constructive critism just to see her climb and succeed. The pairing in 2007 with management group Lady Beast Management and in 2016 with Mindz Eye Entertainments star artist “Wizdum”, has strategically and professionally help LaGhe to boost her confidence, strengthen her vocals, and build a sturdy fan base. Over time LaGhe has been taken under the wing of a few different people and has been walked and sometimes pushed her to reach the precipice of her natural talent. LaGhe has always been the type of woman who positive people gravitate towards and that fact is what initially keeps the pitbulls at bay and great positions open to her. LaGhe has been allowing time for experience to mold her professional plans for the future. With the oncoming of modeling gigs (like being the face of the independently owned clothing store “Judge Not” ) and paid acting jobs (like a womans hotel safety video and an up and coming roll in an independent film with media company “Tuesday After Hours Media”), LaGhe never wants to be known for holding one skill alone so she is pushing her limits to be known for many forms of art right from the start. Even though she is very high on creativity and freedom, LaGhe believes that structure through humblness gives you building blocks that can have a profound effects on you, the people around you, and your career. For those reasons LaGhe has been known to give back to a few of her favorite charities such as “Love Strength Hope” and “Beat Makin Lab” giving 50% of her downloaded proceeds from songs such as “Watch Me” and “What To Do With It”. Always having a holistic and wholesome approach to life in general, it was never a surprise that one of her first professional philanthropic causes would come attached 50% of her profits from her first two most listener loved songs. With all of her trials and tribulations professionally and personally, LaGhe’s outlook towards the uncertain future has been and always will be on an optimistic yet still so realistic level. Right now in life is when LaGhe feels it is the right time to release the type of music that her new album “Facelift” has to offer and to push for what she knows is attainable. Coming in 2nd place at the Coast2Coast Live Event in Chicago last year has got LaGhe more than ready to prove her status, talent, and versatility with a new Coast2Coast event in her own hometown on March 20th 2017. LaGhe’s plan is to keep perfecting her craft, mesmerizing the masses, and spreading her unique sound from one coast to the other.

“INDEPENDENT HIP-HOP : FAR FROM DEAD, MERELY AWAITING IT’S TIME TO SHINE” BY : MARLON TAYLOR

voice , a branch of music relatable to himself, making large contributions not only to his own community but to society in general”

“ A COMPREHENSIVE DISCUSSION WITH 5 MEMBERS OF THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY CONCERNING : WHAT HIP-HOP MEANS TO THEM , THE STATE OF THE INDEPENDENT ( UNDERGROUND ) HIP-HOP MARKET , WHAT ROLES CAN BE PLAYED TO ADD MORE LIFE TO THE CULTURE AND WHY A SENSE OF UNITY IS IMPERATIVE “

Even deeper than the amount of those whose minds and pens have taken residence within its gates , are the numbers of those whose hearts have found happiness even security and understanding within hip-hop’s many messages. One does not have to be musically, lyrically or artistically gifted in order to feel and I , as do those who spent time engaging with me , truly can say we have seen the power of music including rap , in all of our lives and others we have known. “ More than music , it’s a reflection of life .” This was the sentiment of one such , Redd ( Jacqueline Matthews ) , Cincinnati , Ohio bred head of public relations for Integrated Music Solutions and CEO of Redd Ryott Entertainment a promotional company built to assist striving artist to achieve opportunities to perform and share their crafts. “ When all brought together the right way , it soothes me. It’s better than therapy.” Promotional CEO of Hard Knock Productions Harold Monday showed a similar reaction when I caught up with him concerning the impact of not only hip-hop but music itself. He began our chat by stating “Music means everything to me. You never know when that right song could hit you and affect you.” No matter our mood or mental placement , music indeed speaks , even when words have failed.

The phrase “ one hand washes the other “ could not have possibly found a more fitting application than within this article. Since its beginning roots in the late seventies , early eighties ; hip-hop music ( also referred to as rap ) has exploded from one coast of our nation to the other , proceeded by a now global following of loyal fanatics or fans. From the deep bass rhythms to the tales of life’s trials and victories to the trending styles , hip-hop has taken on an ever evolving form that has reached far beyond street corners of the inner city . Hundreds of thousands of people , regardless of race , age , beliefs or backgrounds flock to the artform with an almost unimaginable yet easily explainable magnetism. In itself , it has become a way of being , a daily form of expression and in many cases worldwide , a savior.” Hip-hop means the world to me and like so many has saved my life” thus spoke New York City native , entertainment business college graduate and former ‘Tyesha Talks ‘ morning radio host Tyesha Spells. California battle emcee Aggy Black , was kind enough to speak with me regarding what hip-hop meant to her and her words were truly touching as well. “ Hip-hop has had an extreme impact on my life “ began her testimony . “ It’s ( hip-hop music ) kept me out of trouble and being a person who has difficulty with emotions , it allows me to express them in a creative way… Hip-hop is a culture , a lifestyle , an inspiration “. As with most of my interviews done for this article , the recurring theme found in my research , is that hip-hop has provided yet another platform for individuals to “tell their story” so to speak and share with the world their experiences and perceptions. Orlando , Florida based entrepreneur and audio recording engineer Rashad Dupree describes the genre as “a

Knowing the long standing history that is attached to hip-hop and the universal appeal it has , I began to do some thinking. As a recording and touring artist myself , I have recently been blessed with opportunity to travel the United States and complete a series of 20 shows in 20 cities. Loving and enjoying each chance given to see new places , meet new faces and expand my brand and sound , I also began to notice a few of the “same” differences as I moved about the country. On a national level , support for our favorite hip-hop artists ,stars and legends , is more popular and profitable than in any other phase of its existence. Tens of thousands of people line up outside of clubs , arenas , theatres and festivals just to get a chance of a glimpse of their faves and to enjoy word for word the songs they know and love. What I’ve found however , is when it comes to the independent or underground world of hip-hop music , there seems to be a slightly

different story told in the area of support given or appreciation displayed. In fact , so staggeringly shocking were the kind of attendance numbers that I witnessed , that I immediately became prompted to dig into the situation beyond my own experiences and interview persons from all over the nation in various facets of the industry , to see if indeed I was seeing correctly. Another reason for my research was to learn if there truly is such a noticeable unevenness in the support factor between national and independent hip-hop , what would cause it and how could it be bridged , especially considering “all” artists at one time , began as independent. The following thoughts are questions for discussion that I came up with to help not only myself , but artists , promoters , Djs and fans and lovers of real hip-hop , build better relations , satisfying business dealings and enjoyable events for all. The responses given are those of the persons with whom I spoke and are being printed with their express permission. Ø What is your opinion in the area of support for independent artists ? Harold : There could definitely be more support shown , however , artists have to be willing to push. There is a popular fanbase and then there is each artist’s fanbase. If artists are not pushing themselves and their brand , how or why would the people support. Marlon : Definitely a good point. Fans do not just appear. You have to get out there and make yourself known. Aggy : There is a huge problem with support. Too many people want to be rappers and be heard but not enough people want to listen. It also seems like one can get more support from strangers than from their hometown. It’s really hard work. Most underground rappers fail due to lack of proper promotion and insufficient audio quality. I always support and respect the independent grind because it’s more difficult. There are some talented people out there not getting heard. Rashad : I wish we had more support in general because with it hip-hop could reach new levels. I wish that some of the support was more authentic. It’s like people sometimes show all this love , but aren’t in it for the artists success , more for what can be gained from the success.

Ø In the realm of fans, artists, Djs and promoters , what are some things that can be done on all sides to make opportunities to share love for hip-hop beneficial and enjoyable for all involved ? Redd : Honestly it all lies within individuals. There has to be more of a desire to produce results instead of just wanting them handed off the top. Marlon : For sure. It’s a very tough market and if any of us hope to make an impact or “get known”,we all have to work harder than ever. Harold : Promoters -- reasonable ticket prices , timely events , maintaining professionalism Artists -- preparedness, timeliness, put on a great show and be memorable, give people a reason to want to watch you, and come out for you / challenge your family and friends to come and support your passion; Fans -- be willing to try something new Aggy : Participation is key. Artist need to create ways to engage and interact with their fans. Promotersneed to give incentives to make people want to tune in. For artists and promoters, communicate with the people. You can’t have a show if no-one is going to show up. People have to be inspired by what you do. Rashad : I think the artists and promoters need to become more creative with their approaches. Too many people that are in successful positions are making it hard for smaller talents to “come up” because they areusing up too many resources that most don’t have access to. Upcoming artists and promoters have to make things interesting and competitive. Be willing to stand out, pray and be humble. Ø I recently finished a nationwide tour of 20 cities, and around the country in both small and major cities I witnessedfirsthand attendance numbers like 7 , 18 , 23 , 28 , 50 and so forth. What do you suppose could be the reason behind such stats ? Are fans giving up on independent hip-hop ? Harold : Not at all , in fact hip-hop is becoming stronger and evolving. It’s a genre that is changing constantly Aggy : Not at all , it just seems people have forgotten

what hip-hop is about.

I truly appreciated the time taken by my guests to Rashad : I don’t think people are giving up , it’s just speak candidly with me concerning their thoughts and evolving as music has always been doing. Keep the opinions on the independent hip-hop scene we all love mind and hearts that come up with the creativity, but and belong to. I think the biggest factor in our entire change the tools ( with the times ) and hip-hop will be talk has been that it takes work. And even though it just fine. may seem that artists are not being given the support they desire or even feel they may deserve , there are Ø It almost seems as if people would rather gladly pay a whole list of points and checks we can be making up to ten times the ticket price, to ONLY go and see to ensure that we ourselves give the most we can. It is national artists, opposed to lending an ear even for a most definitely a trying task , but the efforts given are moment to something new or someone trying to bethe blessings received. We all have to work daily not come. What are your thoughts ? only on our various skills and talents , but on effective ways to continue pushing are products and services to Rashad : Exposure is one of the biggest things. It takes the masses to reach the desired goals. In future artia lot to get people’s attention and keep it. Too many cles we will further discuss new ways artists can stay upcoming artists put in a little work and think it is sup- ahead of the game and expand their bases of listeners. posed to reward them. It’s not the supporters, but we as None of those seeking success can rightfully expect artists, who need to work smarter and harder until we any result without the dedication and determination reach the point of selling those tickets. Support should it takes to reach out , shake hands and introduce your be earned, not given. name and brand to a broad world of music lovers , who just happen to not yet know that they want to hear us . Aggy : It’s up to the individual artists to determine how Thank You All much of a movement they want to create. Marlon : 100 % correct , I feel like a person’s drive and willingness to push can bring them the audiences they seek , even on an independent level. It is harder and tougher alone or with a small team, but as Rashad stated “with the proper tools “ it can be accomplished. Ø Is the seemingly waning interest in supporting independent, underground or unsigned artists fixable? Harold : Yes. Artists just need to study the game, rub elbows with people and get out there and make sure people know who they are. Redd : Anything is possible. Aggy : It’s like , if you don’t have a gimmick , no-one is interested . So I believe it can be revived, but we need to go back to the basics and stop being sheep. Rashad : The artists have to take matters into their own hands. As artists, producers, promoters and musicians we need to start respecting each other and those who do this for real. America wants anything of value and we need to give music it’s value back.

Artist: Wizdum Name: Marlon Douglas Taylor D.O.B.:06/08/1079 Hometown: Cumberland, Md. Years in Music: 17 Years The son of a mother who’s heart was filled with song, Wizdum, Marlon Douglas Taylor was born with music in his veins. Ever eager to expand his eclectic appetite for sounds, since a youth he has always appreciated a vast spectrum of artists and the music that they make. Prior to becoming involved with the industry himself in 1999, this former poet was raised on a variety of musical influences from Sam Cooke to Madonna, from New Edition to Elton John, from Natalie Cole to Jay-Z, even going as far back as Frank Sinatra to current hip-hop artists such as Jadakiss and Eminem. Raised by his step-grandfather after the tragic loss of both his mother and grandmother, Wizdum always proved to be a seeker of knowledge and a lover of music. It wasn’t until about the age of 19, after moving to the Midwest (Council Bluffs, Ia.) that a desire was formed to create music himself. Prophacy (Joe Phoenix) a great friend and local hip-hop artist one day gave the suggestion of turning his poetry into raps by reciting his words over popular instrumentals. From that day forth who could’ve known what would result. From performing shows at the YMCA to gracing the stages of theatres and shaking hands with industry heavy weights, music has been his career, more than a hobby since day one. Whether it be his start with Prophacy and other members of the clique Young-N-Bumpin or the 10 years spent in Maryland as a part of the group 3 Man Weave (Smash Hit Records, Dirren Bell, Radeif Wigfall, Lawrence Hester) Wizdum has given 300% to the development of his style, his writing ability, stage presence, promotional skills and all around presentation of himself as an artist. With 12 videos, 2 Albums with 1 on the way, 1 mixtape with 1 on the way, and a slew of singles sold nationwide he has reached listeners that number in the tens of thousands. Blessed with opportunities to open for such famous acts as Twista, Stevie Stone, Jadakiss, and more as well as numerous chances to meet with and perform for industry execs (Bad Boy Records, BMI Publishing, AAMG/Universal, Def Jam Recordings), he is still striving to perfect his craft and share it with any and all who will listen.

“The son of a mother who’s heart was filled with song, Wizdum“

Currently working on a 2 disc, 28 track album entitled “Long Time Coming” Wizdum has been putting in overtime to show that even 16 years later he is as relevant as ever. As a member of Pain Management Inc. (A locally organized team of independent artists and management working together to further the goal of being heard worldwide) and Co-Owner of promotional company Myndz Eye Entertainment he stays busy booking venues for himself, as well as nationally known artists. At 37 his grind, hustle, determination, motivation and sense of being is just as strong now as at 19. Ever on the go, he keeps taking advantage of every blessing set before him. Upcoming events include, Omaha, Ne., Killeen, Tx., Chicago, Il. and even a seat in Hollywood, at The Hollywood Music and Media Awards, as a guest nominee for his worldwide single “State of Attraction” Ft. Brandi Lee. With a positive attitude and forever willingness to learn Wizdum most definitely has what it takes to be a powerful musical influence not only locally or even nationally, but around the globe. Ever on the move, he just recently finished a mini 7 state US tour spanning over 10,000 miles. Beginning in Cleveland, Ohio, then heading to McAllen, Tx followed up by Killeen, Tx. Blessed with the opportunity to perform with his friend LaGhe Music, The two of them ended their 4,000 mile trek by taking 2nd place in Chicago, Il. In a contest held by Coast to Coast Mixtapes. Next stop for him was Omaha, Ne. with follow up performances in Cheyenne, Wy and Detroit, MI. Last but far from least, the tour ended in a tuxedo on Hollywood Blvd. as Wizdum was an honored guest attendee to the Hollywood Music in Media Awards. 2017 holds even more promise after the May 1, 2016 release of 29 tracks entitled “Long Time Coming” Wizdum is once again back in the laboratory currently working on 5 projects covering 70 brand new songs to be released in the winter and spring of the New Year. 4 Mixtapes and a full length album, as well as a five city tour, Opening up for World famous Hip-Hop Artists T.I.P. and Gucci Mane, a trip to New York to Make a music video With world Famous Rapper Jadakiss for his song Featuring Jada called “Facts”, and a trip across the World to Africa for his first ever International collaboration are merely some of the things we can expect from this ever focused go getter.
