Bet You Didn’t Know… Truckee has often been recognized as the coldest spot in the nation, but not during the winter ski season as one might expect. These nippy temperatures are noteworthy because they occur from June through early October. While it may be true, it really doesn’t give a true picture of Truckee’s pristine California weather pattern. Official temperatures are taken at the Truckee-Tahoe Airport, located in Martis Valley. On clear nights, cool air from the high mountains sink downslope into the valley, a high-elevation basin. The dense air mass settles into the basin, creating a chilled microclimate contributing to the chilly readings. As the sun begins to rise, so does the temperature, creating enviable summer and fall temperatures.

S

o many menus so little time. With sweet and savory being all the rage (can you say salted caramel?) why not jump on the band (or feed) wagon and make a meal of the beautiful appetizer and desserts offered at our Truckee restaurants? Who says you can’t have it all? The best of both worlds…have your cake and eat it, too… the more the merrier. Well, you get the idea. Here’s just a sampling of the fare you can enjoy in Truckee.

Cottonwood

cottonwoodrestaurant.com It is their large deck overlooking Truckee town that first draws you in, but the Caesar salad will keep you coming back. Served whole leaf, and for garlic lovers only, it is ample for two people or four if you opt for other appetizers. The grilled Cajun baby back pork ribs with honey chipotle BBQ sauce are a local favorite, but the Brussels sprouts braised in white truffle oil, herbed truffle butter and parmesan will make a believer out of you. Chef David Smith’s starter menu is not expansive, but well appointed. Or perhaps he is encouraging you to save room for his wife’s creations. Resident pastry chef Michele McCarthy Smith’s offerings are the stuff you wished your grandma would make. Seasonal fresh berry crisps, the signature chocolate chip brownie and a variety of bread puddings are served fresh from the oven with Tahoe Creamery ice cream. The gingerbread pudding will make you sit up and say, “Why didn’t I think of that?” Don’t miss...

Dorinda’s Chocolate Café – Imagine handmade chocolate covered cherries (their signature product) or award winning sea salt caramels that melt in your mouth. Dorinda’s chocolates are made to give a little indulgence to one’s life. All of their chocolates are made in house by hand. Stop by this delectable little shop on 10009 West River Street (enter from Riverside Street), order online at dorindaschocolates.com, or call 530-582-6715.

Drunken Monkey

drunkenmonkeysushi.com These people do not fool around when it comes to appetizers. Their claim to fame? Asian Tapas. (Translation: Appetizers with an Asian flair.) Other claim to fame? Sam Okamoto, owner and world celebrated chef. The menu, offering a couple dozen small plates to share à duex, can be overwhelming, so be sure to talk to your server and check out the daily specials for recommends. The Curry Mochiko Chicken and flash fried calamari are “must haves” and great paired with an equally sharable Dragon Roll a sushi concoction of shrimp tempura, unagi, mango and avocado. For dessert, the tapioca pudding topped with Goji berries is a nice way to wind down until round two. The staff here won’t be surprised to see you again the next night. With more than 110 sauces to work through, they are used to repeat attempts.

Moody’s

moodysbistro.com When you see headers like “Sharable Snacks” and “Bar Bites” on your menu, you know your progressive dinner is in good hands. How does Duck paté, ahi poke, or spicy octopus crostini grab ya’? And that is, literally, not the half of it. Salads, such as the roasted beets with naval oranges, avocado, frisee, balsamic and parmesan, are also split-able when paired with the appetizer options. The new menu at Moody’s is designed to give patrons a taste of the good life without having to break into the kids’ piggy banks. In fact, bring the little tykes along. Moody’s new state-of-the-art pizza oven makes dinner a do-able family affair. The trick here is to keep your eye on the prize: The King’s Brownie, topped with peanut butter and caramelized bananas.

Grapes & Grains:

Truckee’s Wine & Beer Scene The Truckee River Winery. Established in 1989, winemaker Russ Jones sources quality grapes, bringing the fruit to Truckee in order to take advantage of the high elevation and cold temperatures to naturally cool the fermentation and slow down the barrel aging process. Thus, becoming the highest and coldest winery. Their award winning Pinot Noir is the winemaker’s pride and joy. The Pour House. Set in a tiny little building on Jibboom Street that was a brothel in 1907, this quaint wine tasting room offers flights, spontaneous wine-geography lessons (on pull-down maps behind the bar), friendly banter about skiing, cuisine and cycling—and hundreds of affordable, handpicked wines from around the globe. Uncorked Truckee. Enjoy a glass or tasting at the amazing handcrafted bar in Truckee’s newest wine tasting room, located in the heart of historic downtown Truckee. Large selection of limited production wines from around the world. Avec Wine + Food. Located at “The Rock” complex off Brockway Road, this gathering spot with its cozy tables, wine bar and outdoor patio is a perfect fit for warm weather fun. Featuring a retail selection of wines and artisan specialty foods from around the world, Avec is the area’s first wine market café and specialty grocer combo featuring local and international wines and Rustic Cal- Euro artisan fare. FiftyFifty Brewing Company. Also located at “The Rock” complex, Truckee’s award-winning craft brewery is dedicated to making world-class beer. The finest malts, hops, fresh mountain water and yeast all lend their unique character to this beer. In fact, their Donner Party Porter recently took Bronze in the Specialty Beer category at World Beer Cup held in San Diego. Lunch and dinner menu complements their variety of beers brewed on the premise. 18

Here’s to Your Health It’s hard not to embrace a healthy lifestyle when surrounded by the natural beauty that is Truckee. The clean air, the crisp blue sky, the sparkle of the sunlight on the lakes, the mountains just begging for exploration—this is not the landscape couch potatoing (is that a verb?) is made of. It is no accident, then, our cozy Sierra town has grown to be a mecca for those promoting health and wellness, be it vacation or vocation. Following is a small sampling of local businesses helping us to do the right thing physically, mentally and spiritually.

For Goodness Sake forgoodnesssake.org

You feel your blood pressure dropping just walking in the doors. The soothing colors, the light, the respectful quiet. Just what you would expect from an establishment dedicated to illuminating your spiritual nature. The shelves are lined with books—quite an extensive library—for sale or loan from every wellness guru past or present. The classes here are free to those with need or interest and include mediation, Tai Chi Chih, Chakra balancing, A Course in Miracles and several others, all facilitated by expert teachers in the given fields. Says FGS director Andy Hill, “We are a manifestation of the spiritual hunger that is a part of this vibrant, dynamic community.”

Bodywise Massage 530-412-0774

Long-time resident Polly McGehee Triplat has been a massage therapist for over 19 years. Polly specializes in sports massage, deep tissue massage, Swedish massage, neuromuscular therapy, and reflexology. Her vision is to facilitate consciousness and well-being within individuals, leading to a more conscious community and world.

Truckee Donner Recreation & Parks District Community Recreation Center tdrpd.com

This has got to be the most beautiful gym in California. Situated upstairs in a huge, cavernous room, the indoor track and fitness equipment is surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows with a breathtaking view of Mother Nature’s finest. Monthly or daily rates for visitors and locals gives you flexibility to create your personal fitness plan.

Wanderlust July 26–29, 2012 wanderlustfestival.com

This festival held in Squaw Valley brings together the world’s leading yoga teachers, headliner music acts, renowned speakers, top chefs and winemakers. Imagine a day nourishing your soul, educating your brain, challenging your body and then rewarding every sense imaginable and you have just about described Wanderlust in a nutshell. This will begin as a once-in-a-lifetime experience you will sure to make an annual event.

The Foothills Farmers Market foothillsfarmersmarket.com

Truckee Named One of America’s Best Mountain Towns by Men’s Journal Touted as “easy living by the lakes” within 10 miles of 10 lakes. Donner Lake is mentioned for fishing or swimming, and Prosser, “glass-smooth in the morning and motor-free, for standup paddling”. Truckee receives a nod for enjoying fewer crowds than the popular Lake Tahoe just 12 miles away. “When the lifts shut down in America’s mountain towns, out come the flip-flops, microbrews, and inner tubes. For a real recharge this summer, spend some time at our favorite high-altitude hotels, restaurants, and outfitters.”

Bet You Didn’t Know... The ice harvesting industry thrived in Truckee in the 1800’s. Ice from the Truckee River and surrounding lakes was cut and harvested, then used to create refrigerated railroad cars carrying California fruits and vegetables across the country. At one time, there were six monstrous icehouses near the Boca Reservoir, each capable of storing thousands of tons of ice. Boca was also home to Boca Brewery which produced 30,000 barrels of beer each year. Boca Beer was sold worldwide and gained fame due to brewing with natural spring water and ice. It became a popular drink at the 1883 World’s Fair in Paris, France.

Blasts from the Past Truckee is steeped in colorful history and you’ll find many different ways to discover and explore.

Truckee-Donner Historical Society truckeehistorysociety.org; 530-582-0893

Tour the Old Jail Museum in June, the Historical Haunted Truckee Tour in October or visit the Society Library every Thursday from 10 am to 2 pm. The library (10115 Donner Trail Road) has prints of historical photographs and books for purchase and a wealth of knowledge on staff. Free treats sweeten the deal.

Historic “Old Hwy. 40” Signs

(see “Historic U.S. Highway 40 California@aaroads.com) Photo op! Have your phone and/or camera ready. Old U.S. 40 follows Donner Pass Road in downtown Truckee along the historic route toward the intersection between Donner Pass Road and Bridge Street (Brockway Road, which was formerly part of California 267). While U.S. 40 no longer exists as an official route, sections of the original remain intact and in some cases carry historic U.S. 40 signs.

Emigrant Trail Museum at Donner Memorial State Park parks.ca.gov; 530-582-7892

The hour it takes to tour the museum gives a very good feel of how life in Truckee really got its start. The statue at the entry to the park represents the height of the snow fall during the ill-fated Donner Party winter (1846). There are also tours of the Donner Party’s Murphy family cabin site nearby and a self-guided nature trail in the summer months.

20 Mile Museum Interpretive Signs Donner Summit

Donner Summit is grand and unique. You can stand on the site where Native American crossed for thousands of years and left evidence in the form of petroglyphs, where the first wagon trains crossed, and the route of the first transcontinental railroad and first transcontinental highway (the Lincoln Highway). The 20 mile museum consists of 29 interpretive signs placed along Old Highway 40 from Eagle Lakes exit (#164 off I-80) to over the Summit below Rainbow Bridge. Each sign highlights history, displays historical photographs and quotes, tells a good story, and lists activities for the location.

Bet You Didn’t Know… The name of the town derives from a friendly Paiute Indian guide whom, in 1844, assisted thousands of emigrants migrating west across the Humboldt Sink. The Indian’s name sounded like “Tro-kay” to the white men, who dubbed him “Truckee.” He became a favorite of the white settlers who found him to be honest and helpful. Chief Truckee fought bravely alongside Col. John C. Fremont in the Mexican War and was the father of Chief Winnemucca.
