Bet You Didn’t Know… Truckee has often been recognized as the coldest spot in the nation, but not during the winter ski season as one might expect. These nippy temperatures are noteworthy because they occur from June through early October. While it may be true, it really doesn’t give a true picture of Truckee’s pristine California weather pattern. Official temperatures are taken at the Truckee-Tahoe Airport, located in Martis Valley. On clear nights, cool air from the high mountains sink downslope into the valley, a high-elevation basin. The dense air mass settles into the basin, creating a chilled microclimate contributing to the chilly readings. As the sun begins to rise, so does the temperature, creating enviable summer and fall temperatures.

The grilled Cajun baby back pork ribs with honey chipotle BBQ sauce are a local favorite, but the Brussels sprouts braised in white truffle oil, herbed truffle butter and parmesan will make a believer out of you. Chef David Smith’s starter menu is not expansive, but well appointed. Or perhaps he is encouraging you to save room for his wife’s creations. Resident pastry chef Michele McCarthy Smith’s offerings are the stuff you wished your grandma would make. Seasonal fresh berry crisps, the signature chocolate chip brownie and a variety of bread puddings are served fresh from the oven with Tahoe Creamery ice cream. Sam Okamoto, owner and world celebrated chef. The menu, offering a couple dozen small plates to share à duex, can be overwhelming, so be sure to talk to your server and check out the daily specials for recommends. The Curry Mochiko Chicken and flash fried calamari are “must haves” and great paired with an equally sharable Dragon Roll a sushi concoction of shrimp tempura, unagi, mango and avocado. For dessert, the tapioca pudding topped with Goji berries is a nice way to wind down until round two. The staff here won’t be surprised to see you again the next night. With more than 110 sauces to work through, they are used to repeat attempts.

Bet You Didn’t Know... The ice harvesting industry thrived in Truckee in the 1800’s. Ice from the Truckee River and surrounding lakes was cut and harvested, then used to create refrigerated railroad cars carrying California fruits and vegetables across the country. At one time, there were six monstrous icehouses near the Boca Reservoir, each capable of storing thousands of tons of ice. Boca was also home to Boca Brewery which produced 30,000 barrels of beer each year. Boca Beer was sold worldwide and gained fame due to brewing with natural spring water and ice. It became a popular drink at the 1883 World’s Fair in Paris, France.

Mileage: 3.0 miles round trip Difficulty: Easy Use level: Light Topographic Map: Soda Springs Access: Take the Soda Springs exit off I-80. On the north side of the freeway follow the paved road east past the fire station for 0.3 mile to the parking area.
The long distance hiking trail is 2,650 miles long that runs from Canada to Mexico primarily through protected wilderness. There are several access points in the Truckee area.
Glacier Meadow Loop Trail Mileage: 0.5 mile loop Difficulty: Very easy Use level: Very heavy Access: Unattended parking is not permitted at the I-80 rest areas on Donner Summit. There is a Forest Service trailhead with restrooms and water. Take the Castle Peak/Boreal Ridge Rd. exit. On the south side there is a sign reading: Tahoe National Forest Trailhead, Donner Summit, Pacific Crest Trail. Follow the directions and turn east 0.4 mile to the trailhead. This trailhead provides access to: Pacific Crest Trail, Glacier Meadow Loop, Summit Lake (2.0 miles one way), Warren Lake (7.0 miles one way) and Sand Ridge Lake (6.0 miles one way).

Sawtooth Trail Mileage: 9 mile loop Difficulty: Moderate Use Level: Heavy Access: From downtown Truckee, head east on Brockway Rd. Turn right on Palisades Dr., go up the hill. Turn right onto Silver Fir, then left onto Thelin. Look for Forest Service Rd. #6 on your right. Start there or drive further up the road and pick another starting point. Fabulous vistas.
Commemorative Emigrant Trail
Mileage: 15 miles one way Difficulty: Moderate Use Level: Moderate Access: Take Hwy 89 North 2.3 miles to Country Rd. 780 (Alder Creek Trail Rd.). Turn left (west) on CR 780 and proceed 3 miles on the road. The trail starts on the south side of road CR 780 across from road CR 780-12. The trail ends at the Stampede Reservoir. To shorten this hike by 3 miles, start at Hwy 89 and the Donner Camp picnic site then head to Stampede.
Donner Lake Rim Trail Mileage: Currently 15 miles are complete, with 9 of them open to bicycle use. Once completed there will be a 23 mile loop. Difficulty: Technical Challenge (for bicycles): Some parts are moderate, others are very difficult. Physical challenge: Strenuous Use Level: Moderate Access: There are currently three trailheads: 1. Tahoe Donner Trailhead parking lot off of Glacier Way. 2. Donner Summit: Hikers and equestrians can use the Pacific Crest Trail, and mountain bikers can access the trail via Castle Valley Rd.
3. Negro Canyon: I-80 at the Donner Lake Interchange. Proceed down the off ramp, and turn north onto a dirt road.
Sagehen Meadows Mileage: 2.5 miles one way Difficulty: Very easy Use Level: Heavy Access: From Truckee, head north 7.2 miles on Hwy 89 N and park on the east side near the Sage Creek Bridge. Follow the trail by the creek to Stampede Reservoir. In the spring the wildflowers are phenomenal and in the fall it is a great place to view the Kokanee salmon spawning.
Truckee River Legacy Trail Mileage: 3.5 miles one way, 1.5 miles paved, 2 miles dirt Difficulty: Easy Use Level: Moderate Access: From Downtown, head east on Brockway Rd. Just past the Palisades Dr. stoplight, turn left into Truckee River Regional Park. The trail begins here. Description: Popular with dog walkers and people out for a stroll. Cyclists: Please keep your speed down. Open to all non-motorized uses.
Tahoe Rim Trail Mileage: 165 miles of single-track, multi-use trail winding around Lake Tahoe. Difficulty: Physical Challenge: Easy to strenuous Use Level: Heavy Access: Two popular trips closest to Truckee are: 1. Ride or hike north on the TRT to the Mt. Rose Wilderness Boundary. Spectacular views of Lake Tahoe, and wildflowers galore. A side trip to the Martis Peak lookout can offer views of Mt. Lassen, which is over 100 miles away. Distance: Out and back 14 miles. 2. Five Lakes
Mileage: 3 miles one way Difficulty: Moderate Use Level: Heavy Access: The trailhead is on the right side of Alpine Meadows Rd. close to the ski area. One of the most popular swimming holes in the area. The steep hike up a canyon next to Alpine Meadows Ski Area to a refreshing lake.
Loch Leven Lakes
Mileage: 2 miles one way Difficulty: Moderate Use Level: Moderate Access: Four lakes at the end of this Donner Summit Trail. Mileage to the first lake is two miles and one and a half miles further is High Loch Leven Lake. Plenty of swimming and a great place to picnic.
SUMMIT CANYON Access: Heading towards the West end of Donner Lake, go past South Shore Drive and up Old Hwy 40. Make a left 400 feet past the winter closure gate into the parking area. Recently open for public use, this historic area boasts non-motorized trails that travel to adjacent USFS and State Park lands along old trade routes, through stands of Aspen, and along clear creeks, ponds and beaver habitat. For the summer of 2012, map kiosks and trail markers are planned at the future parking area along the bottom of old 40 Highway. A new parking area will be paved and maintained throughout the year, providing year-round legal parking for winter activities such as xc skiing and snowshoeing.
WADDLE RANCH PRESERVE Access: Take Martis Creek Lake/Waddle Ranch Access turnoff of CA-267 in Martis Valley. Some of the area’s newest trails have been constructed within Waddle Ranch, the nearly 1,500-acre Martis Valley property owned by the Truckee Donner Land Trust. A new loop of single-track overlooking Martis Creek Lake is now complete and can be enjoyed by parking at end of Martis Creek Road and following Matt, Erika and Megan’s Trail, see new kiosk and trail signs for access.

Old Hwy 40: A local’s favorite, head up Old Hwy. 40 from Donner Lake to Donner Summit. Cross over Rainbow Bridge with incredible views of Donner Lake. If you need a break, stop at the rest area with interpretive signage about history of Hwy. 40. Want More? Continue on past Kingvale to Cisco Grove for a 45 mile round trip. The Three Rights: Start at Hwy. 89 from Truckee heading to Tahoe City. Pedal south and turn RIGHT up the hill toward Eastern Regional Landfill, return to Hwy 89. The library (10115 Donner Trail Road) has prints of historical photographs and books for purchase and a wealth of knowledge on staff. Free treats sweeten the deal.
Historic “Old Hwy. 40” Signs
(see “Historic U.S. Highway 40 California@aaroads.com) Photo op! Have your phone and/or camera ready. Old U.S. 40 follows Donner Pass Road in downtown Truckee along the historic route toward the intersection between Donner Pass Road and Bridge Street (Brockway Road, which was formerly part of California 267). While U.S. 40 no longer exists as an official route, sections of the original remain intact and in some cases carry historic U.S. 40 signs.

The hour it takes to tour the museum gives a very good feel of how life in Truckee really got its start. The statue at the entry to the park represents the height of the snow fall during the ill-fated Donner Party winter (1846). There are also tours of the Donner Party’s Murphy family cabin site nearby and a self-guided nature trail in the summer months.
20 Mile Museum Interpretive Signs Donner Summit
Donner Summit is grand and unique. You can stand on the site where Native American crossed for thousands of years and left evidence in the form of petroglyphs, where the first wagon trains crossed, and the route of the first transcontinental railroad and first transcontinental highway (the Lincoln Highway). The 20 mile museum consists of 29 interpretive signs placed along Old Highway 40 from Eagle Lakes exit (#164 off I-80) to over the Summit below Rainbow Bridge. Each sign highlights history, displays historical photographs and quotes, tells a good story, and lists activities for the location.
Bet You Didn’t Know… The name of the town derives from a friendly Paiute Indian guide whom, in 1844, assisted thousands of emigrants migrating west across the Humboldt Sink. The Indian’s name sounded like “Tro-kay” to the white men, who dubbed him “Truckee.” He became a favorite of the white settlers who found him to be honest and helpful. Chief Truckee fought bravely alongside Col. John C. Fremont in the Mexican War and was the father of Chief Winnemucca.
