welcome #truckeemoments experience. share. repeat.

W

hat do you love about Truckee? Is it a fresh powder day on the slopes under blue skies and abundant sunshine? An action-packed day of water sports and fun at Donner Lake beneath the grandeur of Donner Summit? Hiking up one of your favorite trails and the spectacular vistas you see along the way to your secret little lake? Or is it enjoying a great meal and special drink at your favorite restaurant with friends? Whatever it is, we want people to experience all that Truckee has to offer, share it through social media, and repeat—enjoy more and more of all the activities, events, and lifestyle that Truckee offers. A few months ago we started a movement … a social media movement … we asked people to share their favorite Truckee moments by taking a photo, tagging it with #truckeemoments, and sharing it on social media. Throughout this guide you will see some of the cool photos and experiences people have shared to reflect what they love about Truckee. What makes Truckee such a great mountain town? In addition to the dramatic scenery and outstanding recreation, it is the people. Truckee attracts adventurous, like-minded people that may have come here for a variety of reasons, but stay because they love the lifestyle, and share a sense of community pride. Be sure to read the profiles within these pages of just a few of our locals that call Truckee home. Learn why they chose the Truckee area, where they came from, and what motivates them to get up every day and live the Truckee lifestyle to the fullest. Enjoy your time in Truckee creating your own #truckeemoments—and be sure to share them!

There are so many aspects of Truckee that I am totally in love with, but one of my favorites is the strong sense of community—there are a lot of amazing people in this town and so much natural beauty—living so high in the Sierras is a dream come true! Truckee’s Official Visitors Guide

truckee TOP TRAIL RUNNING TOWN

P

ounding the pavement is overrated — the trail is the real path to

fitness. Truckee receives many accolades, one of which was being named one of the top Trail Running Towns by TrailRunner Magazine where they said “Truckee is a laid-back town with a hyper focus on outdoor sports.” We agree!

Check out a few of our favorite trail runs: Pacific Crest Trail – Donner Summit to Squaw Valley This quintessential Truckee trail run is 15 miles one way with spectacular scenic vistas along the way. Arrange to leave a car at each end.

Pacific Crest Trail – Donner Summit to Interstate 80 For an

eight-mile, rolling out-and-back, run from where the trail crosses Highway 40 north to Interstate 80 at Donner Summit and back. Summit Lake – Donner Summit Start at the Negro Canyon trailhead at I-80 and Donner Lake Road. An access trail meets up with the Donner Lake Rim Trail and crosses several impressive bridges on your way to Summit Lake, 7400 ft. Also accessible from the Pacific Crest Trail. Emigrant Trail There are many accessible points, one of the favorites is north on S89 after the Donner Pass Rd roundabout proceed 7 miles north and park at the pullout for the Prossor Creek bridge. The trail is rolling and fairly level. It is an out and back or one way to Stampede (approximately 9 miles)

There are several area running clubs including the Donner Party Mountain Runners donnerpartymountainrunners.com and the Tahoe Mountain Milers tahoemountainmilers.org.

There isn’t really one “thing” that stands out, but the sum of everything that has come together since moving to Truckee that has made it a great life. Just moving to a beautiful mountain town, with nothing but my wife and a lot of ambition and then being able to find a deeply satisfying way to live and survive with a successful computer business and a satisfying music career. All the many great friends and lifetime bonds that are gathered through this Truckee lifestyle is priceless.

Occupation:Veterinarian and Owner of Sierra Pet Clinic Greatest Accomplishment:

Professionally, I would have to say getting into and finishing veterinary school. It is a very rigorous and time consuming program and only when it was all said and done did it hit me: wow! I did that. I owe a lot of that credit to my son’s father, however. Without the support he provided to me and our young son it would have been a much harder row to hoe. Personally, it would be hard to argue that any accomplishment is greater than having and raising kids. Everything you thought you knew about life goes right out the window when that new little sheriff arrives in town.

Originally From: I am originally from Madison, Wisconsin. I moved to Truckee in March of 2013 when the opportunity to buy Sierra Pet Clinic arose. Who could ask for a more wonderful place to live? Amazing people, amazing pets, one of the most beautiful and refreshing places. For active people it really could not get better than this spectacular mountain town. I have been visiting the Tahoe region since my mother moved to the area in 1987. On those trips came the revelation that I am a mountain girl at heart.

It’s reminiscent of a BMX track, only the features are packed closer together. Rounded, tightly spaced terrain features allow you to “pump” the down transitions and keep up your speed as you fly around the bermed corners, wheelie through the whoops, and boost the jumps.

donner summit Donner Summit is one of the most significant and historic mountain passes and transportation routes in the U.S.

Donner Pass

• The pass was the last challenge in a 2,000 mile journey for early emigrants heading west seeking a better life (the California Trail). • It was the most challenging segment in the building of the Transcontinental Railroad, trying to blast through the mighty granite of the Sierra Nevada. • It opened up the Overland Route train line that allowed train travel from California to Chicago. • It was a key pass along the Lincoln Highway, one of the first transcontinental highways for automobiles across the United States of America. The highway turns 100 years old in 2013. • It is known as U.S. Route 40, which once traversed the entire United States. It is one of the original 1920’s U.S. Highways and was built on top of several older highways, most notably the Victory Highway, designed as a memorial to World War I veterans. • Interstate 80, the second-longest interstate highway in the United States, was built in the 1960’s. • The pass is a prominent feature along the California Zephyr passenger train route.

Royal Gorge

Pacific Crest Trail

The Pacific Crest Trail (commonly abbreviated as the PCT) is a long-distance hiking and equestrian trail. It is a 2,663 miles long trail running from Mexico to Canada along the crest of the mountains in California, Oregon, and Washington. You’ll find yourself on sections of the Pacific Crest Trail on many hikes on Donner Summit. One popular local PCT hike is from Donner Summit to Squaw Valley, 6.0 miles one way. Hikers attempting the PCT in its entirety are commonly seen in July passing through.

This two day annual event takes place October 4–5, 2014 and features great hikes, speakers, and an opportunity to learn about emigrant history. donnerpartyhike.com

truckee’s colorful history discover + explore Truckee-Donner Historical Society Tour the Old Jail Museum in downtown Truckee on Jibboom Street from June to September to check out artifacts of Truckee’s colorful history. Docents on site. Visit the Historical Society Library every Thursday and Sunday from 10am to 2pm. The Library (10115 Donner Trail Road) has historians at hand to help with research and answer questions. Vast collection of historic photos, custom printing available. truckeehistorysociety.org; 530-582-0893

Historic “Old Hwy. 40” Signs/ Rainbow Bridge

Head up Old Highway 40 from the west end of Donner Lake for the MUST SEE vista from Rainbow Bridge. While U.S. 40 no longer exists as an official route, sections of the original remain intact. All along Donner Pass Road from the Summit through downtown you will see the “Old Hwy. 40” signs. aa.roads.com

20 Mile Museum Interpretive Signs

Look for 29 interpretive signs placed along Old Highway 40 from Eagle Lakes (exit #164 off I-80) to over the Summit below Rainbow Bridge. Signs highlight history, photographs and quotes that tell a good story and list activities for the location.

Emigrant Trail Museum at Donner Memorial State Park

Take a self-guided tour of the museum to get a feel of how life in Truckee really was in the early days. The Pioneer Monument statue at the entry to the park honors all who made the difficult trek across the western plains and mountains to reach California during the 1840s. The height of the statue represents the depth of the snow (22 feet) that the ill-fated Donner Party in 1846 encountered. Nearby, you will find a trail leading to several plaques that talk about the Donner Party. Tours available in the summer months. parks.ca.gov; 530-582-7892

Truckee Railroad Museum

Located next to the historic train depot in downtown Truckee, look for the caboose that houses the small museum where you will find displays depicting the first transcontinental railroad, logging, railroads, tourism by rail and how all played an important part of Truckee’s history. truckeedonnerrailroadsociety.com 46

1 Sassarini Home – Built circa 1895 by the Sassarini family, this home was purchased by the McGwinn family in 1918 for ten dollars in gold coin. Doyle McGwinn grew up to be the town butcher for many years. 2 Titus Home – This home was constructed circa 1912 on a spot previously occupied by a Chinese boarding house. Designed by Will Bliss, it was the only architecturally designed home in Brickelltown. Frank Titus, Sr. built the home while working as an engineer on the narrow gauge railroad, which hauled lumber from Lake Tahoe to Truckee. 3 Eaton Homes – Originally built by Edward Brickell circa 1880 and then served as the Truckee Lumber Company store. Harry Eaton, Brickell’s son-in-law was a longtime railroad engineer. His son, Harry, grew up in this home and in the 1930s would ski to Tahoe City to deliver the mail when trains were snowbound in Truckee. 4 Kruger C.B. White House – W.H. Kruger, an original owner of the Truckee Lumber Company, built this home in 1873. In 1904, C.B. White, a banker and prominent citizen, bought the house. The house is on the National Register of Historic Places. 5 Veterans Memorial Building – Sitting on the site of the palace like McGlashan mansion which burned down in 1935. In 1939, members of the Truckee American Legion Post 439 constructed the present building which became a meeting place for most of the town’s community activities. Today you can take a short memorial pathway from the Old Jail Museum up to this historic site. 6 Rocking Stone – Although the 17-ton stone no longer rocks, it is one of 25 known rocking stones in the world. The local Native Americans used this rock for drying their food and holding ceremonies as far back as 15,000 years ago. One of the early tribes painstakingly chipped away the rock to flatten the top and curve the bottom so animals couldn’t climb up to eat their food. 7 Loading Dock – Once a loading dock and freight station

23 Schaffer House – Built in 1895 by George Schaffer, who, together with Joseph Gray, built the first lumber mill in 1867. The partnership was dissolved in 1871, when Schaffer moved his mill site out towards Martis Valley. By this time, Schaffer had made Truckee his home and had built at least three buildings that can still be found in town. 24 Star Hotel – Built by George Schaffer in 1885 after the first building on this site burned in May of 1885. There’s still debate in town as to whether George Schaffer built the Star Hotel for his large family’s residence or for workers in his mill. The house located directly west is believed to have been Schaffer’s private residence. 25 Stone Garage – This building is on the location of Truckee’s first building: Gray’s Station. The current stone building was constructed around 1911 and served as a carriage house and blacksmith shop. 26 Truckee Hotel – Built as the American Hotel in 1873, it has been through several name changes since. A major fire destroyed most of the building in 1909. The building was renamed to the Alpine Riverside for the 1960 Winter Olympics and was renamed the Truckee Hotel in 1977 after a major renovation. 27 Chinese Herb Shop – Built in 1878, this was the cornerstone of Truckee’s Chinatown—the second largest Chinese community on the west coast. The building later houses the Truckee Soda Works. 28 Gray’s Cabin – Built in 1863 by Joseph Gray, this is Truckee’s oldest building. In 1909, the house was given to the Native Sons of the Golden West, Donner Parlor No. 162, and moved to its present location. 29 Community Art Center – Truckee’s original elementary school building was on this site. The aging building was replaced by a new schoolhouse in 1936 and operated as the elementary school until a new school was built in town.

16 Depot and the First Transcontinental Railroad – While construction on the Sierra tunnels was delayed, advance teams began building 40 miles of track east and west of Truckee, moving supplies by wagon and sled. The line reached Truckee on April 3, 1868. Construction advanced eastward toward the meeting with Union Pacific at the rate of one mile daily. On May 10, 1869, the rails met at Promontory (Utah) to complete the first transcontinental railroad. The current depot was built in 1900. 17 Chinese Laundry – When the Transcontinental Railroad was completed in 1869, about 1,400 out-of-work Chinese laborers traveled to Truckee, seeking new jobs building railroads through the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Within a few months, one-third of Truckee’s population was Chinese. 18 Il Trovatore Club – Built in 1931, it was also known as the Sassarini Pool Hall. This was one hopping place in its hay-day when the Winter Carnivals were a big deal in this Hilltop area. 19 The Capitol – Built in 1871 by William Hurd, this building was the first brick structure in Truckee. Originally “Hurd’s Saloon and Hall” and later the “Capitol Saloon”, it was used by the Piper Opera Company and then for the County Court. 20 I.O.O.F. Hall – Built in 1871, it is the second oldest building on the block. Rebekah officials from New York had been in San Francisco to organize a lodge there. On their way back to New York, they became snowbound in Truckee. Local women decided they would like to have a lodge in town and the second Rebekah Lodge in California was born. 21 Rex Hotel – Built over 100 years ago, it was converted to a hotel with steam-heated rooms in 1913. During prohibition, the lower floor was a speakeasy called the “Silver Mirror”. 22 Squeeze In – Frank Burckhalter operated the town’s first bank at this location. In 1869, a daring bank robbery was thwarted by the heroic action of bank employees and town citizens.

for the Southern Pacific Railroad, this building served as a warehouse for years. Much of Truckee’s lumber and ice were shipped from here. 8 Richardson House – Warren Richardson built this Victorian home in 1887. The home stayed in the family until 1940. The house was used for many years as a boarding house, once known as “The Flop House”. 9 First And Last Chance Saloon – It was the first saloon heading east and the last saloon heading west. It also housed Truckee’s original telephone office. 10 Old Jail Museum – Built in 1875 out of native stone, the brick was added around 1904. The jail ran continuously until 1964, housing many infamous criminals. Showcasing early Truckee industries, the museum is open on summer weekends. 11 Flying “A” – Built in 1936, this gas station was revitalized in 2007 to appear as a 1949 gas station. 12 Sierra Tavern – Originally built as a three-story building in 1928; a fourth floor was added in 1938. This was once the location of the law offices of Truckee’s famous citizen, Charles McGlashan, who wrote the History of the Donner Party. 13 Railroad Museum – The first transcontinental railroad, logging railroads and tourism by rail all played an important part in Truckee’s history. The museum, located next to the depot, is housed in a Southern Pacific Railroad caboose. 14 Alta Hotel – Built as the Tahoe Saloon in the 1920s, a period of recreational excitement when Truckee’s winter months were alive with winter carnival activities. Previously, the Sassarini family operated the Flor D’Italia on this site, which burned in a fire in 1921. 15 Cabona’s – Founded in 1918, Cabona’s is the oldest retail establishment on Commercial Row. Its founder, Dave Cabona, originally sold fishing tackle, appliances and general merchandise. The eastern part of the store was a coffee shop. An embedded coffee cup is still in the sidewalk.
