hat does the perfect Truckee day look like? That depends

on who you ask. And while there’s nothing quite like living and working in Truckee, the definition of “working” and “living” vary from person to person. That’s why our Truckee digital media team came up with our “Live Like a Local” campaign. We asked our social media fans to send us their favorite Truckee activities, places to visit, shop, dine, relax, have a coffee, party and more. Throughout this Visitors Guide you will find just a sampling of what we received that might help you make the most of your time here. Truckee is an authentic mountain town, set against dramatic scenery with a full array of outstanding recreation, unique shops, top notch dining, and a cool hip vibe. But beyond that, we are a community that attracts adventurous, like-minded people that may have come here for a variety of reasons, but stay because they love the lifestyle, and share a sense of community pride. Be sure to read the lifestyle profiles within these pages of just a few of our locals that call Truckee home. Learn why they chose the Truckee area, where they came from, and what motivates them to get up every day and live the Truckee lifestyle to the fullest. We hope you enjoy your time in Truckee and be sure to share what YOUR perfect Truckee day looks like by becoming a fan of ours on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, pin with us on Pinterest and follow us on Instagram. If you want to see more of our Live Like a Local ideas, head to Truckee.com to view the online book. Beautiful pictures of real people enjoying all that Truckee has to offer—day in and day out. What more could you ask for?

Why the Truckee Area?

daphne hougard

I was born in Truckee and raised in Alpine Meadows/Tahoe City and the North Shore of Lake Tahoe. The mountains and the culture here shaped who I am and I was lucky enough to become one of the best skiers in the world, which has allowed me to continue to live in Tahoe and create my home base here. I currently spend most of my summer training on the trails, waters, and gyms on the North Shore and Truckee, and travel to compete from August through March. Tahoe/Truckee is the best place in the world to be an athlete pushing the limits of their sport. An inspirational outdoor playground!

I moved to Truckee to live the Tahoe lifestyle and found an incredible community. I can ski or bike in a world-class setting, while fitting in a full day of work, and still make it home in time for dinner. I enjoy being a member of a community with incredible people and quality schools, which makes Truckee a very special place. There is no other place we would rather be.

I came for the skiing, stayed for everything else. Now the combo of sun, sand, water, mountains and community might just keep me here forever. I’m not sure there are any other places quite like the region we get to call home. I think I’ll be staying for awhile!

Katy Jones Occupation

General Manager of Truckee River Winery

Greatest Accomplishment

For me, my greatest accomplishments are being able to own a home in Truckee, run and manage a successful business in this area, still kick butt at golf (played varsity golf during high school) and enjoy skiing and cross country. Overall being able to enjoy and live the life I have always wanted is my greatest accomplishment.

Years in Truckee Area A total of 23 years

Originally From Truckee, CA (I am a second generation native)

Why the Truckee Area?

daphne hougard

I was born and raised here, graduated from Truckee High, and attended Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington with one semester in Florence, Italy. I came back each summer to work and live in the area, and began to re-love the Truckee area. I worked at Garwoods over the summer, and it was there that I met my fiance. I love being able to live in a town that my fiance loves, and being near and working with my family. The Truckee area is such a fantastic place to live, work and play. I could never imagine living in a town without snow, or a large city. I just love the small, tight knit and funky community that Truckee is.

donner summit

ERSKINEPHOTOGRAPHY.COM

Donner Summit is one of the most significant and historic mountain passes and transportation routes in the U.S.

Donner Pass

ERSKINEPHOTOGRAPHY.COM

• The pass was the last challenge in a 2,000 mile journey for early emigrants heading west seeking a better life (the California Trail). • It was the most challenging segment in the building of the Transcontinental Railroad, trying to blast through the mighty granite of the Sierra Nevada. • It opened up the Overland Route train line that allowed train travel from California to Chicago. • It was a key pass along the Lincoln Highway, one of the first transcontinental highways for automobiles across the United States of America. The highway turns 102 years old in 2015. • It is known as U.S. Route 40, which once traversed the entire United States. It is one of the original 1920’s U.S. Highways and was built on top of several older highways, most notably the Victory Highway, designed as a memorial to World War I veterans. • Interstate 80, the second-longest interstate highway in the United States, was built in the 1960’s. • The pass is a prominent feature along the California Zephyr passenger train route.

Royal Gorge

The Truckee Donner Land Trust acquired 3,000 acres on Donner Summit known as Royal Gorge, and 351 acres in Negro Canyon above Donner Lake. This might be one of the most important conservation victories for the Sierra in a generation, ensuring all of Royal Gorge’s remarkable meadows, peaks, natural resources, and the Nordic ski area are protected forever and open to the public for world-class recreation.

Pacific Crest Trail

The Pacific Crest Trail (commonly abbreviated as the PCT) is a long-distance hiking and equestrian trail. It is a 2,663 miles long trail running from Mexico to Canada along the crest of the mountains in California, Oregon, and Washington. You’ll find yourself on sections of the Pacific Crest Trail on many hikes on Donner Summit. One popular local PCT hike is from Donner Summit to Squaw Valley, 6.0 miles one way. Hikers attempting the PCT in its entirety are commonly seen in July passing through. 32

R

ight in our backyard only 12 miles away, is a MUST SEE on your visit to Truckee—Lake Tahoe with its extraordinarily blue water is set like a jewel in the mountains and virtually without peer. America’s largest alpine lake is the second deepest lake in the U.S. with a depth of 1,645 feet. Its clarity has long been a subject of discussion and awe among tourists and scientists alike. A dip into this crystal clear lake will invigorate and rejuvenate you. The water temperature is 70+ degrees in the mid-summer and 40 degrees in the winter. The drive around the lake is 72 miles and will take you through many different communities, each with its own distinct personality. Experience a peacefulness as you gaze out over the lake, which is 22 miles long and 13 miles wide. Lake Tahoe has a rich maritime history from steamboats that were used for transportation in the early years, to those amazingly beautiful sleek wooden boats. truckee’s

Take a self-guided tour of the museum to get a feel of how life in Truckee really was in the early days. The Pioneer Monument statue at the entry to the park honors all who made the difficult trek across the western plains and mountains to reach California during the 1840s. The height of the statue represents the depth of the snow (22 feet) that the ill-fated Donner Party in 1846 encountered. Nearby, you will find a trail leading to several plaques that talk about the Donner Party. Tours available in the summer months. parks.ca.gov; 530-582-7892

colorful history

discover + explore Truckee-Donner Historical Society

Tour the Old Jail Museum in downtown Truckee on Jibboom Street from June to September to check out artifacts of Truckee’s colorful history. Docents on site. Visit the Historical Society Library every Thursday and Sunday from 10 am to 2 pm. The Library (10115 Donner Trail Road) has historians at hand to help with research and answer questions. Vast collection of historic photos, custom printing available. truckeehistorysociety.org; 530-582-0893

20 Mile Museum Interpretive Signs

Look for 29 interpretive signs placed along Old Highway 40 from Eagle Lakes (exit #164 off I-80) to over the Summit below Rainbow Bridge. Signs highlight history, photographs and quotes that tell a good story and list activities for the location.

Truckee Railroad Museum

Located next to the historic train depot in downtown Truckee, look for the caboose that houses the small museum where you will find displays depicting the first transcontinental railroad, logging, railroads, tourism by rail and how all played an important part of Truckee’s history. truckeedonnerrailroadsociety.com

Historic “Old Hwy. 40” Signs/ Rainbow Bridge

Head up Old Highway 40 from the west end of Donner Lake for the MUST SEE vista from Rainbow Bridge. While U.S. 40 no longer exists as an official route, sections of the original remain intact. All along Donner Pass Road from the Summit through downtown you will see the “Old Hwy. 40” signs. aa.roads.com

Truckee’s Haunted Historic Tour

This annual event, taking place October 15–16, 2015, features storytelling, costumed characters, and local lore that will take you back in time to Truckee’s Wild West roots. At each stop your imagination will be tapped with original performances and spooky tales. truckeehistorytour.org
