I first moved here for a winter to ski and figure out what I wanted to do next. I lived here in the winter for a couple years and in the summer I worked as a biologist for the Forest Service in Idaho. Next I went back to school to get a PhD in biology and lived here part time. When I was done, I decided not to follow a job because I really wanted to live in Truckee. I loved the community and the outdoor opportunities. I knew I wanted to have a family here. It was a hard decision, but I turned down jobs in my field to live here and try to make something work. I slowly began to piece things together working at Auburn Ski Club and doing research at Desert Research Institute. In 2014, I started Headwaters Science Institute so that I could share my love of science and the amazing natural space in the Truckee area with students in California. It has been an amazing decision. WHAT DOES BIG LIFE MEAN TO ME?

When I think of Big Life, I think of living each day to the fullest. For me this means, getting outside to exercise even if the weather isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t cooperating. I love the feeling of coming home and eating and warming up after getting wet, dirty, and cold exercising. It also means spending quality time with my family, especially outside. I love being able to show my kids new trails, teaching them to bike, swim in the lakes, and enjoy this amazing place. Lastly, I think of my work. I love to be busy and help people. I love working for two different non-profits in this community. I feel like my work is meaningful to me and to others. It helps me feel fulfilled each day.

TRUCKEE-DONNER RECREATION & PARK DISTRICT For additional information or small group reservations, call the Truckee-Donner Recreation & Park District at 530-582-7720 or visit tdrpd.com. “SALTY” GEBHARDT AMPHITHEATER This landscaped bowl in the regional park offers sloped lawn seating for up to 1,600 people. The Amphitheater is the site of the Music in the Park concerts on Wednesday nights, beginning in June. Rental available with reservations. TRUCKEE ICE SKATING RINK Located in the Truckee River Regional Park, features public skating, skate rentals, snack bar, group and private lessons for all age groups, broomball leagues, and more. Open: December through mid-March. 530-587-6172 RIVERVIEW SPORTS PARK A 30-acre park, 12200 Joerger Dr. Featuring multi-purpose fields for soccer and football, Ultimate Frisbee, softball field, BMX track, pump track, bocce courts, non-traditional playground, and covered picnic area. TRUCKEE COMMUNITY RECREATION CENTER Located at 8924 Donner Pass Rd. at the Pioneer Center Roundabout. Youth & adult programs, camps, classes, indoor track, fitness center, climbing wall, and meeting rooms. TRUCKEE RIVER REGIONAL PARK Just 1/2 mile south of downtown, 10050 Brockway Rd., this park offers 62-acres of facilities including tennis and basketball courts, and children’s play area. Most areas may be reserved by application at the Rec & Park office. NATURE TRAILS .8 mile nature trail winds through Regional Park, exhibiting 12 different native and naturalized plant communities of the Truckee area, with picnic sites and benches along the way. SKATE PARK Located at Truckee River Regional Park on the corner of Brockway Rd. and Estates Dr., the 10,000 square foot concrete facility is equipped with skateboarding elements for all age levels and abilities.

MEADOW PARK On Donner Trails Rd., located directly behind the Truckee-Donner Public Utility building, the park features ball fields, playground, picnic area, and an open turf for play. BILL ROSE PARK This small neighborhood play area is located in Gateway, at Tahoe Dr. and Spring Lake. It features tot lot and playground equipment.

Truckee’s Unique Mountain Craft The interest in craft and artisanal beverages is growing and Truckee Beverage Scene spans all segments with a winery and wine tasting locales, several taprooms, and even a spirits distillery.

TRUCKEE RIVER WINERY. The iconic Red Barn on the Truckee

River is where the winemaking takes place, and their tasting room, The Ranch, is where locals and visitors gather for drinking in the local spirit, surrounding scenery and award-winning wine. Making wine in the high elevation and cold temperatures is not without its challenges, but “the highest and coldest” winery can also take advantage of the high elevation and cold temperatures to naturally cool the fermentation and slow down the barrel aging process. Their award winning Pinot Noir is the winemaker’s pride and joy, and daughter Katy is now the General Manager and White Winemaker of the family. Stop by this fun, family-owned winery to take in some of the local flavor at 11467 Brockway Road.

FIFTYFIFTY BREWING COMPANY.

Co-owners Andy and Alicia Barr founded FiftyFifty Brewing Company in 2007. As former engineers for Hewlett-Packard, they were looking for “something that inspires us more.” Today, they employ 86 people and have racked up 20+ National and International Awards. They are embarking on a major expansion facility that will significantly increase their production allowing them to produce draft, cans and bottles. Their Brewers’ Intent Bottle Club party, set in an idyllic mountain setting along the shores of the Truckee River, brought together members of this high-end beer club to enjoy an afternoon of beta-testing barrelaged beer styles, BBQ, games and the sounds of local musicians. Members came from all over California, and as far away as Ohio, Texas and New York. Drop by this craft brewery with a great local vibe located at 11197 Brockway Road.

econd and third grade students at Serra Expeditionary Learning School (SELS) collaborated on a project to give visiting families with young kids ideas of fun family activities in Truckee. As their community project, these local students brainstormed then voted on top places to go with kids in Truckee. They then got together in groups to write the copy and produced rack cards available at the Truckee California Welcome Center and other locations around town. Truckee is a great place to visit with kids under the age of 10. There are many activities and places to explore. Hiking is fun, challenging, and has many amazing views. Tubing down the Truckee River is a wonderful way to cool off on a hot summer day. Winter is perfect for snow sports. Donner Memorial State Park

Donner Memorial State Park is a great place to go in Truckee. You will have a great view of Donner Lake and in the summer you can watch the boats pass by. The trails have some great scenery and some wildlife. The Pioneer Monument is a statue of the Donner Party. When you are done at the lake, head over to the Visitor’s Center and Museum to learn a lot of Truckee history.

KidZone Museum

Looking for an award winning place for your children to play? The KidZone has you covered. This place offers tons of creative themes and toys to spark your imagination. The KidZone provides art and science supplies for your children to explore and create. The wonderful indoor and outdoor playground can bring lots of joy to kids under ten. The KidZone is full of endless fun.

Truckee Variety Co. is the locals’ favorite toy store. The front of the store has lots of yummy candy to choose from. There is a wide range of toys for all ages, including a variety of Legos and puzzles. Don’t forget to check out the back of the store for art supplies and stuffed animals!

Truckee River Regional Park

Come to the Regional Park and your family will have a blast. There are two different playgrounds, for toddlers and big kids that your children will love. There are also some bouncy dinosaurs, a frog sprinkler, and lots of swings. The newest addition is the rideable train that surrounds the park! Be sure to check the schedule to see if it’s running on weekends.

Northstar is a fun place to go skating in the winter or summer. The ice skating rink is perfect for learning the basics. During the summer, rollerblading or rollerskating is a fun activity. If you get hungry, Rubicon has your favorite pizza. Finish your day at the candy shop. They have all types of yummy treats, including frozen yogurt.

Check out the new indoor community swimming pool at the Truckee Recreation Center and get ready to splash into some fun! Sit back and enjoy the lazy river or take your pick from two different water slides. A lap pool and diving board is also available for those interested. Do you like riding bikes and getting dirty? Then the Truckee Bike Park pump track is the place for you and it’s free. Bring your bike and ride the hills. You can go on small jumps or big jumps. If you don’t know how to go off jumps, you can just ride your bike around the track. Also, you can race your friends on a simple little track. You will get all dusty and dirty at the Pump Track. See how much dust you can make as you race down the hill.

Burger Me!

Burger Me! has a lot of different types of burgers that everyone loves! You can get beef, turkey, veggie, even bison with a variety of toppings and sides. The milkshakes are delicious with many flavors to choose from. Next, the outdoor seating has comfy chairs and fantastic mountain views. The Truckee area has a variety of dog-friendly, town-maintained trails for winter recreation opportunities like hiking, running, and biking. Getting out on these trails is also a great way to cure Fido of his cabin fever and meet other dog owners. On all trails, please follow any leash laws and always clean up after your 4-legged friends (most trails have poop bag dispensers and trash cans). Trails are plowed once after each storm, but some remain snow-covered and icy in places, so use caution. Your dogs will thank you for bringing them to one of these great trails!

Truckee River Legacy Trail

The longest stretch of plowed trail is the popular Truckee River Legacy Trail, which connects Truckee Regional Park with Glenshire, five miles one-way. Free parking is available at the following locations: • Near the Ice Skating Rink (10100 Brockway Road Truckee), in Truckee Regional Park. • Near the pedestrian bridge at the end of East River Street, downtown Truckee. • In Glenshire, the parking lot is on the south side of Glenshire Drive, approximately 4 miles east of Donner Pass Road.

The bike path in Squaw Valley, with 2.3 miles of plowed trails, can be accessed from a couple locations during the winter: Free parking is available at the east end of the parking lot at Squaw Valley Ski Resort. Note- the first ¼ mile from the resort to the start of the bike path is along high-traffic Squaw Valley Road, so exercise caution here. From the parking lot at the Resort at Squaw Creek, 400 Squaw Creek Road, Olympic Valley.

Trout Creek Trail

The Trout Creek Trail connects Northwoods Boulevard near Coyote Moon Golf Course to Downtown Truckee at Bridge Street just north of Highway 80. This beautiful stretch of trail is approximately 1.5 miles one way. Free parking is available at the trailhead on the east side of Northwoods Boulevard, just north of Coyote Moon Golf Course. There is limited paid-parking at the Trout Creek Pocket Park on the north end of Bridge Street in downtown Truckee.

Brockway Road Trail

This shorter section (approx 1 mile) of plowed trail links Truckee Regional Park with The Rock (11253 Brockway Road). For a 2.5 mile loop, start in the Truckee Regional Park, head south on the Brockway Road Trail, turn left on Reynold Way (a residential street, so use caution here), turn left on Martis Drive, then turn right on Ranch Way to access the Legacy Trail under the 267 bypass. Turn left on the Legacy Trail to make your way back to Truckee Regional Park and complete the loop.

Martis Dam Road

Martis Dam Road (located in Martis Valley, less than 1 mile south of Schaffer Mill Road on Hwy 267) is closed to cars in the winter, and is currently plowed 1.5 miles one-way. This road receives unobstructed sunshine and has sweeping views of the Martis Valley, with Northstar to the south and the Sierra Crest to the west. Free parking is available on Martis Dam Road off Hwy 267 before the gate.

I am only planning to live once, so I go as big as I can in both my work life and outside of work, which is spent almost entirely outdoors. I am wired to work hard and that would be the case wherever I lived. But, the outdoors recharges me and without the ability to go big, which is a recharge more than a “rest”, my life would be so out of balance that I would be unhealthy. So, I find myself doing everything from fat biking in the snow to swimming in remote lakes as my therapy sessions.

The long distance hiking trail is 2,650 miles long that runs from Canada to Mexico primarily through protected wilderness. There are several access points in the Truckee area. GLACIER MEADOW LOOP TRAIL

There is a Forest Service trailhead with restrooms and water. Take the Castle Peak/Boreal Ridge Road exit. On the south side there is a sign reading: Tahoe National Forest Trailhead, Donner Summit, Pacific Crest Trail. Follow the directions and turn east 0.4 mile to the trailhead. This trailhead provides access to: Pacific Crest Trail, Glacier Meadow Loop, Summit Lake (2.0 miles one way), Warren Lake (7.0 miles one way), and Sand Ridge Lake (6.0 miles one way).

MILEAGE: 5.0 miles one way DIFFICULTY: Easy USE LEVEL: Moderate ACCESS: From downtown, head east on Brockway Road. Just past the Palisades Drive stoplight, turn left into Truckee River Regional Park. The trail begins here or from East River Street downtown. Truckee’s signature trail, the Truckee River Legacy Trail follows the river’s south side for 5 miles, crossing Martis Creek via a bridge, and ends with a climb to the Glenshire neighborhood. Providing scenic views and access to Truckee River Regional Park and Riverview Sports Park. Look for interpretive signage along the trail. This paved trail is a great ride for bike riders, dog walkers and people out for a stroll.

TRUCKEE AREA DONNER MEMORIAL STATE PARK LAKESHORE INTERPRETIVE TRAIL

MILEAGE: 2.5 round trip DIFFICULTY: Easy USE LEVEL: Heavy ACCESS: Donner Memorial State Park Trailside exhibits. The path leads to and along Donner Lake. COLDSTREAM CANYON

MILEAGE: Varies out and back DIFFICULTY: Very easy USE LEVEL: Heavy ACCESS: From I-80 take the Truckee Donner Memorial State Park exit, west of Truckee. Follow the paved road past the Truckee Donner Lodge for about 0.5 mile and park. Start walking on the road. SAWTOOTH TRAIL

MILEAGE: 9 mile loop DIFFICULTY: Moderate USE LEVEL: Heavy ACCESS: From downtown Truckee, head east on Brockway Road. Turn right on Palisades Drive, go up the hill. Turn right onto Silver Fir, then left onto Thelin. Look for Forest Service Road #6 on your right. Start there or drive further up the road and pick another starting point. Fabulous vistas.

COMMEMORATIVE EMIGRANT TRAIL

MILEAGE: 15 miles one way DIFFICULTY: Moderate USE LEVEL: Moderate ACCESS: Take Hwy 89 North 2.3 miles to Country Rd. 780 (Alder Creek Trail Rd.). Turn left (west) on CR 780 and proceed 3 miles on the road. The trail starts on the south side of road CR 780 across from road CR 780-12. The trail ends at the Stampede Reservoir. To shorten this hike by 3 miles, start at Hwy 89 and the Donner Camp picnic site then head to Stampede. To shorten this hike by 6 miles begin on Hwy 89 at Prosser Creek bridge. DONNER LAKE RIM TRAIL

MILEAGE: Currently 15 miles are complete, with 9 of them open to bicycle use. Once completed there will be a 23 mile loop. MILEAGE: 2.5 miles one way DIFFICULTY: Very easy USE LEVEL: Heavy ACCESS: From Truckee, head north 7.2 miles on Hwy 89 N and park on the east side near the Sage Creek Bridge. Follow the trail by the creek to Stampede Reservoir. In the spring the wildflowers are phenomenal and in the fall it is a great place to view the Kokanee salmon spawning. TAHOE RIM TRAIL

MILEAGE: 165 miles of single-track, multi-use trail winding around Lake Tahoe. DIFFICULTY: Physical Challenge: Easy to strenuous USE LEVEL: Heavy ACCESS: Two popular trips closest to Truckee are: 1. Ride or hike north on the TRT to the Mt. Rose Wilderness Boundary. Spectacular views of Lake Tahoe, and wildflowers galore. A side trip to the Martis Peak lookout can offer views of Mt. Lassen, which is over 100 miles away. DISTANCE: Out and back 14 miles. 2. Hike or ride south on the TRT to Watson Lake. The trail is rolling here, and travels through a mature forest. MILEAGE: 8.0 DIFFICULTY: Moderate USE LEVEL: Heavy ACCESS: Starts just south of Brockway Summit, on Hwy 267. From Truckee, it is on the north side of the highway. Follow the main road, which is marked with orange diamond signs. To the fire look out, it will be an 8 mile hike. TROUT CREEK TRAIL

MILEAGE: 1.5 (7,900 feet long) DIFFICULTY: Moderate USE LEVEL: Moderate ACCESS: From downtown Bridge Street head up a beautiful canyon filled with pine forests and Aspen trees. Listen to Trout Creek babble, birds sing and enjoy this trail’s secluded feel. This paved trail continues up to Tahoe Donner / Northwoods Blvd.

JOHNSON CANYON

ACCESS: Take the Donner Lake Exit on I-80. At the bottom of the off ramp, head north (uphill) about 300 yards to the trailhead where there is a large parking area and kiosks with a map of the area and background information. Trails provide access to Summit Lake, Warren Lake and Pacific Crest Trails.

ACCESS: Heading towards the west end of Donner Lake, go past South Shore Drive and up Old Hwy 40. Make a left 400 feet past the winter closure gate into the parking area. This historic area boasts non-motorized trails that travel to adjacent USFS and State Park lands along old trade routes, through stands of Aspen, and along clear creeks, ponds and beaver habitat. Map kiosks and trail markers are at the parking area along the bottom of Hwy 40. WADDLE RANCH PRESERVE

LOCH LEVEN LAKES

MILEAGE: 2 miles one way DIFFICULTY: Moderate USE LEVEL: Moderate ACCESS: Four lakes at the end of this Donner Summit Trail. Mileage to the first lake is two miles and one and a half miles further is High Loch Leven Lake. Plenty of swimming and a great place to picnic.

ACCESS: Take Martis Creek Lake/Waddle Ranch Access turnoff of Hwy 267 in Martis Valley. A single-track overlooking Martis Creek Lake can be enjoyed by parking at end of Martis Creek Road and following Matt, Erika and Megan’s Trail, see kiosk and trail signs for access.

ruckee Tahoe Airport District is spearheading a Truckee Bikeshare program called “Zagster” this coming summer. The initial launch of the program will include 10 bikes and two pickup and return parking stations. One station will be located at the Truckee Airport and the other in downtown Truckee. The program involves downloading an app and setting up a quick and easy account on your phone. The app then gives you an access code to unlock the bike. Donner Summit is one of the most significant and historic mountain passes and transportation routes in the U.S.

Black Wall

Black Wall on Donner Summit is an iconic, world-class climbing area. With approximately 50 climbing routes, it is a prime destination for climbers. Whether you climb, hike or just like to look at nature’s wild beauty, these black granite towers at the west end of Donner Lake are some of the most dramatic terrain in the entire north Tahoe/Truckee region. Recently acquired by the Truckee Donner Land Trust, the craggy 400-foot Black Wall, the largest rock formation at Donner Summit and bracing stands of pine and alder, will now be preserved for climbers and nature lovers.

Royal Gorge

The Truckee Donner Land Trust acquired 3,000 acres on Donner Summit known as Royal Gorge, along with the 351 acres in Johnson Canyon above Donner Lake. This acquisition ensures all of Royal Gorge’s remarkable meadows, peaks, natural resources and the Nordic ski area have been protected forever and are open to the public for world-class recreation. Trails in the area offering variety and spectacular scenery include: • SUMMIT VALLEY HISTORY TRAIL – easy 4-mile loop around Summit Valley with history going back 4,000 years to the Martis Culture of Native Americans. Its modern history includes being a brief stopover for emigrants who had just successfully scaled Donner Summit. • LYLE’S LOOKOUT – a short 3-mile hike provides spectacular view of the iconic Devil’s Peak. • ROWTON PEAK – a moderately strenuous 4-mile hike leads through several wildflower and bird areas, passes through some impressive volcanic geology, and offers expansion views of the Pacific Crest and the Granite Chief Wilderness. • POINT MARIAH – a moderate 5-mile route with dramatic viewpoint down 4,000 feet into the Royal Gorge of the North Fork of the American River. PACIFIC CREST TRAIL The Pacific Crest Trail (commonly abbreviated as the PCT) is a long-distance hiking and equestrian trail. It is a 2,663 mile long trail running from Mexico to Canada along the crest of the mountains in California, Oregon, and Washington. You’ll find yourself on sections of the Pacific Crest Trail on many hikes on Donner Summit. One popular local PCT hike is from Donner Summit to Squaw Valley, 6.0 miles one way. Hikers attempting the PCT in its entirety are commonly seen in July passing through Truckee.

Donner Lake is a freshwater lake 2.7 miles long; .6 miles wide; a circumference of 8 miles; with a depth of 328 ft. There are 35 public piers available for fishing, boating, and sunbathing. Group picnic reservations and Pavilion on the Point are made with the Truckee-Donner Recreation and Park District. If that sounds like you, but you want to enjoy the snow, there are still plenty of winter activities in Truckee that will have everyone jealous of your wintry escape. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Shop Local in Historic Downtown Truckee

Perusing up and down Truckee’s Historic Downtown and rediscovering favorites such as Atelier, Dressed and Riverside Studios is probably already a part of your Truckee mainstay. What you may not frequent, however, are the gems tucked away in other parts of the town – and they’re worth checking out. So you need to make a trip to Safeway, but what you really want and need is a home décor lover’s tour of Mountain Hardware and Sports (not your grandpa’s hardware store) for a beautiful curated collection of mountain gifts, kitchen and home items. Stroll over from the Safeway parking lot. Across the street, New Moon Natural Foods is where you’ll find the freshest, crispiest veggies locally grown, in addition to all of the herbs, vitamins and supplements you left at home. You can also grab beer, wine and whiskey at Zander’s Spirits, a locally owned store right next to the StartHaus.

Snowshoe Hikes For the First-Timer

If you enjoy hiking in the summertime, think of snowshoeing as the winter version of that. It’s an approachable activity while also a fantastic cardio workout. Some easy trails for first-timers are located near Donner Memorial State Park (cut over to the path closest to Donner Lake for stunning views). Nearby, checkout out the NEW state-of-the-art Donner Memorial State Park Museum & Visitor Center for captivating history on the Donner Party. I also really love the Truckee River Legacy Trail (well maintained by Town and adjacent to the Truckee River). If you’re up for a scenic workout with “summit” accomplishment in mind, Hawk’s Peak (accessible via Alder Creek Adventure Center) is a 3-mile roundtrip adventure. Afterwards, feast on fresh organic kale salad in this NEW gorgeous lodge with fire pits outside. Don’t have snowshoes? Rent them at Tahoe Dave’s or consider buying your own pair at Tahoe Sports Hub. Wear the same thing you’d wear skiing along with waterproof snow boots, and don’t forget ski poles.

Try Snow Biking

Snow biking—or fat biking—is a must if you haven’t tried it before. Yes, riding a bike on the snow is as fun as it sounds. Rent a fat bike from CyclePaths (newly relocated next to Full Belly Deli in the Pioneer Center) or Paco’s. Ask about guided tours. There are many popular single-track trails perfect for snow biking in the Truckee region. To start, check out the Legacy Trail or Tahoe Donner’s Cross Country Center or just (carefully) cruise around town and avoid traffic! Wear warm, lightweight and breathable clothing, and always rock a helmet.

What To Pack

When planning a winter vacation to the Sierra Nevada, there are two important elements to keep in mind: elevation and weather. Sitting at 5,817 feet, Truckee isn’t as high as some other mountainous resort towns in the nation, but you will definitely feel it if you’re coming from sea level. Bring packs of Emergen-C for extra vitamins plus a water bottle to fill up regularly—in fact, some ski resorts like Squaw Valley no longer sell single use plastic water bottles. For clothing, check the weather ahead of time (skip your smartphone’s weather app and check noaa.gov for the most accurate conditions). Regardless of the forecast, you’ll want to pack layers and at least one sturdy winter coat—but if you do hit sunshine during your visit you may be surprisingly warm. The key: moisture-wicking layers. Snow boots like Sorels (find at Mountain Hardware & Sports) are essential for slick sidewalks. Don’t forget gloves and beanies!

Take a Scenic Drive & Instagram Your Winter Vacation

Looking for a way to show off your wintry escape without committing to the slopes just yet? Icicles are plentiful this time of year, and there are impressive specimens all over town right now. Take a drive up Old Highway 40 to Donner Summit (bonus points if you wake up for sunrise!) and down to Soda Springs— aside from the gorgeous views, you’ll find Instagrammable cabins aplenty. On your way back, stop at one of the many public piers on Donner Lake for numerous awe-inducing vantage points. 1 SASSARINI HOME – Built circa 1895 by the Sassarini family, this home was purchased by the McGwinn family in 1918 for ten dollars in gold coin. Doyle McGwinn grew up to be the town butcher for many years. 2 TITUS HOME – This home was constructed circa 1912 on a spot previously occupied by a Chinese boarding house. Designed by Will Bliss, it was the only architecturally designed home in Brickelltown. Frank Titus, Sr. built the home while working as an engineer on the narrow gauge railroad, which hauled lumber from Lake Tahoe to Truckee. 3 EATON HOMES – Originally built by Edward Brickell circa 1880 and then served as the Truckee Lumber Company store. Harry Eaton, Brickell’s son-in-law was a longtime railroad engineer. His son, Harry, grew up in this home and in the 1930s would ski to Tahoe City to deliver the mail when trains were snowbound in Truckee. 4 KRUGER C.B. WHITE HOUSE – W.H. Kruger, an original owner of the Truckee Lumber Company, built this home in 1873. In 1904, C.B. White, a banker and prominent citizen, bought the house. The house is on the National Register of Historic Places. 5 VETERANS MEMORIAL BUILDING – Sitting on the site of the palace-like McGlashan mansion which burned down in 1935. In 1939, members of the Truckee American Legion Post 439 constructed the present building which became a meeting place for most of the town’s community activities. Today you can take a short memorial pathway from the Old Jail Museum up to this historic site. 6 ROCKING STONE – Although the 17-ton stone no longer rocks, it is one of 25 known rocking stones in the world. The local Native Americans used this rock for drying their food and holding ceremonies as far back as 15,000 years ago. One of the early tribes painstakingly chipped away the rock to flatten the top and curve the bottom so animals couldn’t climb up to eat their food.

7 LOADING DOCK – Once a loading dock and freight station for the Southern Pacific Railroad, this building served as a warehouse for years. Much of Truckee’s lumber and ice were shipped from here. 8 RICHARDSON HOUSE – Warren Richardson built this Victorian home in 1887. The home stayed in the family until 1940. The house was used for many years as a boarding house, once known as “The Flop House.” 9 FIRST AND LAST CHANCE SALOON – It was the first saloon heading east and the last saloon heading west. It also housed Truckee’s original telephone office. 10 OLD JAIL MUSEUM – Built in 1875 out of native stone, the brick was added around 1904. The jail ran continuously until 1964, housing many infamous criminals. Showcasing early Truckee industries, the museum is open on summer weekends. 11 FLYING “A” – Built in 1936, this gas station was revitalized in 2007 to appear as a 1949 gas station. 12 SIERRA TAVERN – Originally built as a three-story building in 1928; a fourth floor was added in 1938. This was once the location of the law offices of Truckee’s famous citizen, Charles McGlashan, who wrote the History of the Donner Party. 13 RAILROAD MUSEUM – The first transcontinental railroad, logging railroads and tourism by rail all played an important part in Truckee’s history. The museum, located next to the depot, is housed in a Southern Pacific Railroad caboose. 14 ALTA HOTEL – Built as the Tahoe Saloon in the 1920s, a period of recreational excitement when Truckee’s winter months were alive with winter carnival activities. Previously, the Sassarini family operated the Flor D’Italia on this site, which burned in a fire in 1921. 15 CABONA’S – Founded in 1918, Cabona’s is the oldest retail establishment on Commercial Row. Its founder, Dave Cabona, originally sold fishing tackle, appliances and general merchandise. The eastern part of the store was a coffee shop. An embedded coffee cup is still in the sidewalk.

16 DEPOT AND THE FIRST TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROAD – While construction on the Sierra tunnels was delayed, advance teams began building 40 miles of track east and west of Truckee, moving supplies by wagon and sled. The line reached Truckee on April 3, 1868. Construction advanced eastward toward the meeting with Union Pacific at the rate of one mile daily. On May 10, 1869, the rails met at Promontory (Utah) to complete the first transcontinental railroad. The current depot was built in 1900. 17 CHINESE LAUNDRY – When the Transcontinental Railroad was completed in 1869, about 1,400 out-ofwork Chinese laborers traveled to Truckee, seeking new jobs building railroads through the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Within a few months, one-third of Truckee’s population was Chinese. 18 IL TROVATORE CLUB – Built in 1931, it was also known as the Sassarini Pool Hall. This was one hopping place in its hay-day when the Winter Carnivals were a big deal in this Hilltop area. 19 THE CAPITOL – Built in 1871 by William Hurd, this building was the first brick structure in Truckee. Originally “Hurd’s Saloon and Hall” and later the “Capitol Saloon”, it was used by the Piper Opera Company and then for the County Court.

20 I.O.O.F. HALL – Built in 1871, it is the second oldest building on the block. Rebekah officials from New York had been in San Francisco to organize a lodge there. On their way back to New York, they became snowbound in Truckee. Local women decided they would like to have a lodge in town and the second Rebekah Lodge in California was born. 21 REX HOTEL – Built over 100 years ago, it was converted to a hotel with steam-heated rooms in 1913. During prohibition, the lower floor was a speakeasy called the “Silver Mirror.” 22 SQUEEZE IN – Frank Burckhalter operated the town’s first bank at this location. In 1869, a daring bank robbery was thwarted by the heroic action of bank employees and town citizens. 23 SCHAFFER HOUSE – Built in 1895 by George Schaffer, who, together with Joseph Gray, built the first lumber mill in 1867. The partnership was dissolved in 1871, when Schaffer moved his mill site out towards Martis Valley. By this time, Schaffer had made Truckee his home and had built at least three buildings that can still be found in town. 24 STAR HOTEL – Built by George Schaffer in 1885 after the first building on this site burned in May of 1885. There’s still debate in town as to whether George Schaffer built the Star Hotel for his large family’s residence or for workers in his mill. The house located directly west is believed to have been Schaffer’s private residence.

25 STONE GARAGE – This building is on the location of Truckee’s first building: Gray’s Station. The current stone building was constructed around 1911 and served as a carriage house and blacksmith shop. 26 TRUCKEE HOTEL – Built as the American Hotel in 1873, it has been through several name changes since. A major fire destroyed most of the building in 1909. The building was renamed to the Alpine Riverside for the 1960 Winter Olympics and was renamed the Truckee Hotel in 1977 after a major renovation. 27 CHINESE HERB SHOP – Built in 1878, this was the cornerstone of Truckee’s Chinatown—the second largest Chinese community on the west coast. The building later housed the Truckee Soda Works. 28 GRAY’S CABIN – Built in 1863 by Joseph Gray, this is Truckee’s oldest building. In 1909, the house was given to the Native Sons of the Golden West, Donner Parlor No. 162, and moved to its present location. 29 COMMUNITY ARTS CENTER – Truckee’s original elementary school building was on this site. The aging building was replaced by a new schoolhouse in 1936 and operated as the elementary school until a new school was built in town.

Public Art There’s lot of local art popping up around Truckee. Some of the latest cool exhibits of local artists include: “THE BAND,” a set of four recycled steel sculptures can be seen along Donner Pass Road in Brickelltown. Created by Mountain Forge, a local family owned blacksmith shop, “The Band” was designed and fabricated as prototypes for a commissioned display in San Francisco. “The Band brings a little color, a little movement, and a little sound if you will, to match the modern vibe of downtown Truckee,” explains Toni Standteiner, lead blacksmith on the project. “LOCOMOTION” giant bike sculpture by Fred Besch stands at the entrance of a mini-plaza in Brickelltown. Besch, originally from New York, is a brilliant and creative artist fascinated by all things mechanical from an early age. A landscape contractor by trade, Besch owns Earthworks, a Truckeebased landscape construction company. The nearby oversized chess game was made by local maker and laser cutter enthusiast Tom O’Neill at the Truckee Roundhouse, community makerspace.
