Now, as the popularity of biking (and racing) on mixed-terrain that includes paved, gravel and dirt roads explodes, Truckee is shining bright as a destination with incredible, scenic routes for this active cycling community to explore. Building off the success of last year’s Sagan Fondo Truckee Dirt Edition headlined by pro cyclist Peter Sagan, on June 8, 2019 Truckee will host the inaugural Truckee Dirt Fondo. This new event offers an opportunity to showcase the area’s world-class trails to those who are passionate about high alpine off-road adventures. The race will feature three new routes that range from 42 to just over 107 km with elevation gains from 463 meters in the Rollout Course, to 1,745 meters in the Long Course, pushing riders to pedal as high as 8,006 feet above sea level over Sardine Peak in the Tahoe National Forest. The fully supported ride produced by Bike Monkey will include stocked aid stations, on-bike marshals, Moto support and SAG vehicles before finishing with a family festival.

No problem. Immediately following the start of the main race on Saturday, the event will feature a fun, family activity festival and live music. Whether you’re looking for easy, moderate or challenging trails to hike, snowshoe, cross-country or downhill ski, mountain bike, road or gravel ride, Truckee has it all. Need a few scenic routes to add to your bucket list? Hike or snowshoe Donner Summit Canyon. Trails in this historic area off Old Hwy 40 on Donner Summit follow clear creeks and look directly down on Donner Lake. Explore Johnson Canyon’s mellow backcountry trails with views of Donner Lake, or the Donner Lake Rim Trail’s multi-use single track on the mountains and ridges surrounding the lake.

If trail running is your thing, don’t miss the Martis Creek Wildlife Area Trail or Sagehen Summit. History buffs — whether on foot or bike, will appreciate the Commemorative Emigrant Trail that follows the historic path of pioneers in the 1800s, and the Donner Camp Trail at Alder Creek, commemorating where part of the Donner Party spent the winter of 1846–47. New trails — like the new Big Chief bike trail — continue to be built in our incredible community, with the goal of connecting people and places, and reduce our dependence on cars. Truckee Donner Land Trust

Working with the Squaw Valley Public Service District, the Land Trust is also working toward acquiring Olympic Meadow, a 30-acre property with woods, meadow and a stretch of Squaw Creek near the entrance of Olympic Valley. A new 4-mile stretch of Donner Lake Rim Trail will connect Trout Creek Trail at Northwoods Boulevard up to the Glacier Way trailhead, enabling residents and visitors alike to hike, run or ride from downtown to Donner Summit and beyond. With more than $780,000 in grant funding from the Sierra Nevada Conservancy this year, the Land Trust will tackle significant forest health and wildfire risk mitigation work on two properties – Royal Gorge and Webber Lake. THE TRUCKEE DONNER LAND TRUST, formed in 1990, has preserved and protected more than 36,000 acres in the Truckee Donner area. Purchasing private properties and conservation easements, the Land Trust has protected popular places in the region like Waddle Ranch, Royal Gorge, Donner Summit Canyon, Lower Carpenter Valley and Webber Lake. And once the land is preserved, the Land Trust works to ensure the public can enjoy it for generations to come, building more than 40 miles of trails to date and taking care of the forests, streams and meadows. In 2019, the Land Trust and its partners are working to purchase Frog Lake, Red Mountain and Carpenter Ridge totaling nearly 3,000 acres between Castle Peak and Tahoe Donner — a tremendous opportunity for public recreation when it opens in 2020.

TRUCKEE COMMUNITY RECREATION CENTER Located at 8924 Donner Pass Rd. at the Pioneer Center Roundabout. Youth and adult programs, camps, classes, indoor track, fitness center, climbing wall, and meeting rooms. The gym has the ability to support up to two full court basketball games, two volleyball courts, two futsal games and four pickleball courts. Drop in basketball and pickleball games are ongoing throughout the year. TRUCKEE RIVER REGIONAL PARK Just 1/2 mile south of downtown, 10050 Brockway Rd., this park offers 62-acres of facilities including tennis and basketball courts, picnic sites, ballfields, batting cage, and children’s play area. Most areas may be reserved by application at the Rec & Park office.

“SALTY” GEBHARDT AMPHITHEATER This landscaped bowl in the Regional Park offers sloped lawn seating for up to 2,000 people. The Amphitheater is the site of the Music in the Park concerts on Wednesday nights, beginning in June. Available to rent. TRUCKEE ICE SKATING RINK Located in the Truckee River Regional Park, features public skating, skate rentals, snack bar, group and private lessons for all age groups, broomball leagues, and more. Open December through mid-March.

LEGACY TRAIL Starting at the Regional Park to Riverview Sports Park, the paved trail allows for biking, walking, and dogs on leashes along the Truckee River. The scenic trail exhibits 12 different native and naturalized plant communities of the Truckee area, with picnic sites and benches along the way.

RIVERVIEW SPORTS PARK A 30-acre park, 12200 Joerger Dr. Featuring multi-purpose fields for soccer and football, Ultimate Frisbee, softball field, BMX track, pump track, bocce courts, nontraditional playground, and covered picnic area. Truckee River Legacy Trail access.

SKATE PARK Located at Truckee River Regional Park on the corner of Brockway Rd. and Estates Dr., the 10,000 square foot concrete facility is equipped with skateboarding elements for all age levels and abilities.

MEADOW PARK On Donner Trail Rd., located directly behind the Truckee Donner Public Utility building, the park features ball fields, playground, picnic area, and an open turf for play.

TRUCKEE DISC GOLF COURSE Located the backside of Truckee River Regional Park; the Truckee Disc Golf Course has 18 holes with scenic views of the Truckee River and surrounding mountains. The first hole is just off the main parking lot.

GLENSHIRE FIELD A six-acre park on Dorchester Dr. located adjacent to Glenshire Elementary School with open turf for soccer fields and one youth softball/baseball field.

Besch stands at the entrance of a mini-plaza in Brickelltown. Besch, originally from New York, is a brilliant and creative artist fascinated by all things mechanical from an early age. A landscape contractor by trade, Besch owns Earthworks, a Truckee-based landscape construction company. “DeRailed” bike rack made from Donner Summit railroad tracks, made by Bernie LaForest of Striker Forge, can be seen in the center island in front of the Train Depot.

The 3,400 sf community makerspace, Truckee Roundhouse, is a community-operated shop or workshop where people with common interests — often in computers, machining, technology, science, digital art or electronic art — can meet, socialize and collaborate. PUBLIC ART

There’s a lot of local art popping up around Truckee. Some of the latest cool exhibits of local artists include: “The Band,” a set of four recycled steel sculptures can be seen along Donner Pass Road in Brickelltown. Created by Mountain Forge, a local family owned blacksmith shop, “The Band” was designed and fabricated as prototypes for a commissioned display in San Francisco. “The Band brings a little color, a little movement, and a little sound if you will, to match the modern vibe of downtown Truckee,” explains Toni Standteiner, lead blacksmith on the project. “Locomotion” giant bike sculpture by Fred

I-80 TO DONNER SUMMIT

Mileage: 6.5 miles round trip Difficulty: Moderate Use level: Light Topographic Map: Soda Springs Access: Take the Soda Springs exit off I-80. On the north side of the freeway follow the paved road east past the fire station for 0.3 mile to the parking area.

The long distance hiking trail is 2,650 miles long that runs from Canada to Mexico primarily through protected wilderness. There are several access points in the Truckee area.

GLACIER MEADOW LOOP TRAIL Mileage: 0.5 mile loop Difficulty: Very easy Use level: Very heavy Access: Unattended parking is not permitted at the I-80 rest areas on Donner Summit. There is a Forest Service trailhead with restrooms and water. Take the Castle Peak/ Boreal Ridge Road exit. On the south side there is a sign reading: Tahoe National Forest Trailhead, Donner Summit, Pacific Crest Trail. Follow the directions and turn east 0.4 mile to the trailhead. This trailhead provides access to: Pacific Crest Trail, Glacier Meadow Loop, Summit Lake (2.0 miles one way), Warren Lake (7.0 miles one way), and Sand Ridge Lake (6.0 miles one way).

Mileage: 6.0 miles one way Difficulty: Difficult Use Level: Heavy Access: See Glacier Meadows Loop Trail.

MT. JUDAH LOOP Mileage: 4.5 miles round trip Difficulty: Moderate Use Level: Heavy Access: Pacific Crest Trail— From Hwy 40, east of Donner Ski Ranch, turn into the unpaved parking lot before the snow gate and begin the hike on the PCT heading south.

PACIFIC CREST TRAIL (PCT) DONNER SUMMIT TO SQUAW VALLEY

Mileage: 15 miles one way Difficulty: Very difficult Use level: Moderate Access: You will need two cars to hike this trail. Leave one at Squaw Valley and drive the other to the Pacific Crest Trail. Pacific Crest Trail—From Hwy 40, east of Donner Ski Ranch, turn into the unpaved parking lot before the snow gate and begin the hike on the PCT heading south.

CASTLE PEAK Mileage: 5.3 miles round trip Difficulty: Moderate Use level: Heavy Topographic Map: Norden Access: Take the Boreal/Castle Peak exit of I-80. Park where the road turns to dirt.

HOLE IN THE GROUND Mileage: 7.8 miles one way Difficulty: Technical Challenge (for bicycles): Difficult to very difficult. Physical Challenge: Strenuous for bikes, very strenuous for hikers, due to length, altitude, and lack of bailout options. Use Level: Moderate Topographic Map: Norden, Independence Lake, Soda Springs Access: Take the Castle Peak exit off I-80. Head north on the Castle Peak Road approximately 1.5 miles.

COLDSTREAM CANYON

Mileage: Varies out and back Difficulty: Very easy Use Level: Heavy Access: From I-80 take the Truckee Donner Memorial State Park exit, west of Truckee. Follow the paved road past the Truckee Donner Lodge for about 0.5 mile and park. Start walking on the road.

SAWTOOTH TRAIL Mileage: 9 mile loop Difficulty: Moderate Use Level: Heavy Access: From downtown Truckee, head east on Brockway Road. Turn right on Palisades Drive, go up the hill. Turn right onto Silver Fir, then left onto Thelin. Look for Forest Service Road #6 on your right. Start there or drive further up the road and pick another starting point. Fabulous vistas.

COMMEMORATIVE EMIGRANT TRAIL Mileage: 15 miles one way Difficulty: Moderate Use Level: Moderate Access: Take Hwy 89 North 2.3 miles to Country Rd. 780 (Alder Creek Trail Rd.). Turn left (west) on CR 780 and proceed 3 miles on the road. The trail starts on the south side of road CR 780 across from road CR 780-12. The trail ends at the Stampede Reservoir. To shorten this hike by 3 miles, start at Hwy 89 and the Donner Camp picnic site then head to Stampede. To shorten this hike by 6 miles begin on Hwy 89 at Prosser Creek bridge.

DONNER LAKE RIM TRAIL Mileage: Currently 15 miles are complete, with 9 of them open to bicycle use. Once completed there will be a 23 mile loop. Difficulty: Technical Challenge (for bicycles): Some parts are moderate, others are very difficult. Physical challenge: Strenuous Use Level: Moderate Access: There are currently three trailheads: 1. Tahoe Donner Trailhead parking lot off of Glacier Way. 2. Donner Summit: Hikers and equestrians can use the Pacific Crest Trail, and mountain bikers can access the trail via Castle Valley Road. 3. Negro Canyon: I-80 at the Donner Lake Interchange. Proceed down the off ramp, and turn north onto a dirt road.

TRUCKEE RIVER LEGACY TRAIL

THE BIG CHIEF TRAIL

Mileage: 5.0 miles one way Difficulty: Easy Use Level: Moderate Access: From downtown, head east on Brockway Road. Just past the Palisades Drive stoplight, turn left into Truckee River Regional Park. The trail begins here or from East River Street downtown. Truckee’s signature trail, the Truckee River Legacy Trail follows the river’s south side for five miles, crossing Martis Creek via a bridge, and ends with a climb to the Glenshire neighborhood. Providing scenic views and access to Truckee River Regional Park and Riverview Sports Park. Look for interpretive signage along the trail. This paved trail is a great ride for bike riders, dog walkers and people out for a stroll.

The Truckee Trails Foundation worked with the USFS and Northstar California on a 7-mile non-motorized trail connecting the southern tip of the Sawtooth Trail down to Watson Lake and the Tahoe Rim Trail. Construction was completed in fall of 2018.

TAHOE RIM TRAIL Mileage: 165 miles of singletrack, multi-use trail winding around Lake Tahoe. Difficulty: Physical Challenge: Easy to strenuous Use Level: Heavy Access: Two popular trips closest to Truckee are: 1. Ride or hike north on the TRT to the Mt. Rose Wilderness Boundary. Spectacular views of Lake Tahoe, and wildflowers galore. A side trip to the Martis Peak lookout can offer views of Mt. Lassen, which is over 100 miles away. Distance: Out and back 14 miles. 2. Hike or ride south on the TRT to Watson Lake. The trail is rolling here, and travels through a mature forest. Distance: Out and back 16 miles. Tahoe Rim Trail Association — tahoerimtrail.org

Mileage: 4 mile loop Difficulty: Easy Use Level: Heavy Access: Starts in Martis Valley on the way to Northstar California. Hike around the meadow, which is on the south side of the highway.

MARTIS PEAK HIKE

JOHNSON CANYON Access: Take the Donner Lake Exit on I-80. At the bottom of the off ramp, head north (uphill) about 300 yards to the trailhead where there is a large parking area and kiosks with a map of the area and background information. Trails provide access to Summit Lake, Warren Lake and Pacific Crest Trails.

LOCH LEVEN LAKES

Mileage: 8.0 Difficulty: Moderate Use Level: Heavy Access: Starts just south of Brockway Summit, on Hwy 267. From Truckee, it is on the north side of the highway. Follow the main road, which is marked with orange diamond signs. To the fire look out, it will be an 8 mile hike.

Mileage: 2 miles one way Difficulty: Moderate Use Level: Moderate Access: Four lakes at the end of this Donner Summit Trail. Mileage to the first lake is two miles and one and a half miles further is High Loch Leven Lake. Plenty of swimming and a great place to picnic.

TROUT CREEK TRAIL

Mileage: 1.5 (7,900 feet long) Difficulty: Moderate Use Level: Moderate Access: From downtown Bridge Street head up a beautiful canyon filled with pine forests and Aspen trees. Listen to Trout Creek babble, birds sing and enjoy this trail’s secluded feel. This paved trail continues up to Tahoe Donner / Northwoods Blvd.

Access: Heading towards the west end of Donner Lake, go past South Shore Drive and up Old Hwy 40. Make a left 400 feet past the winter closure gate into the parking area. This historic area boasts nonmotorized trails that travel to adjacent USFS and State Park lands along old trade routes, through stands of Aspen, and

In Truckee, our day-today routine probably doesn’t differ too dramatically from anyone else’s: drop the kids off at school, get an oil change, stop by the post office, hop on a conference call, take the dog out for a jog on the Legacy Trail, pick up dinner. Conversations of how to cultivate a healthier work-life-balance abound over cappuccinos at Coffeebar. Perhaps it’s just my current life stage — business owner in her early 30’s who says yes too often and feels bored when not stressed — but I don’t think I’m alone in continually yearning for a stronger sense of wellness in my daily routine. Thankfully, Truckee is the ultimate inspiration. Even on busy days when I’m unable to get outside, simply gazing out my office windows at the alpenglow painted on the neighboring mountains is enough to remind me in an instant why this is my sanctuary. John Muir once said that going to the mountains is going home, and it’s true… I believe our bodies and souls were designed to be at peace in nature: nothing makes me feel quite as alive than swimming in a cold alpine lake after hiking six miles to get there. I have met countless individuals who call Truckee their base camp — not just for a big life, but a new life. There’s no denying it: this place is healing.

Stretch It Out Truckee’s yoga community is alive and well, with several different studios and styles rooted here. Alpenflow | Yoga Studio Tahoe, located in the Pioneer Center, has a devout following and offers workshops, yoga teacher training, and an incredibly dynamic teaching staff. Another local favorite is Tahoe Yoga & Wellness, conveniently located on Donner Pass Road, which additionally offers massage therapy, chiropractic care, acupuncture and more. My personal go-to is Namaste, located in Brickeltown: a smaller studio with inexpensive community drop-in classes. You might also try Truckee Yoga Collective, which is also a teacher training studio. Make sure to ask about the new student special! If you’re looking for a truly unique wellness experience at altitude, look up Gyöngyi Ridenour of GyöHarmony — a sound healer and yoga instructor (among many other things) who makes regular appearances around town.

Life at 6,000 Feet Living at altitude means we’re continuously exposed to the elements on a harsher level; copious amounts of sun exposure and dry air is not exactly beneficial to our skin or hair. Thankfully, there are professionals in the region who understand firsthand how to treat altitude’s side effects. If you need to give your hair or lashes some love, I cannot recommend my friend Alana Ciera at Lumiére Hair Studio enough. A charming light-filled space with tall vaulted ceilings, Lumiére’s upstairs Brickeltown location is intimate and stocked with photogenic hair products in cotton candy colors that will woo dry hair back to life. My other favorite downtown haunt is the newly opened day spa AlpineGold Spa & Boutique. Owner and seasoned beauty vet Merritt King offers treatments ranging from facials to sugaring to spray tanning, alongside her beautiful boutique: Truckee’s best-kept secret for scoring unique gifts. Detoxing (then retoxing), making room in the budget for regular massages, and organic smoothies from New Moon are all a part of the routine as well — a routine that’s become as treasured to me as the vigorous outdoor activities I enjoy every other day of the week. Visiting town? Stay hydrated, keep up with your electrolytes, and take it slow if you’re especially susceptible to the elevation. And treat yourself — after all, that’s why we’re all here! Self care has become such a buzz word in today’s society, it’s almost evolved into cliché status — but I’d like to think clichés are clichés for a reason. Of course, not only has Truckee become a place of rejuvenation, it has also attracted a rad community of local businesses who create soft spaces to unwind in. “Wellness” means different things to different people, but for me, the wellness culture of Truckee can be summed up in the nourishment of the mind, body, and soul. As our bodies are so active here — often taking hard falls and gnarly injuries — it’s especially important to carve out time to slow down. Here are a few of my favorite ways to do just that:

Right in our backyard only 12 miles away, is a MUST SEE on your visit to Truckee — Lake Tahoe with its extraordinarily blue water is set like a jewel in the mountains and virtually without peer. America’s largest alpine lake is the second deepest lake in the U.S. with a depth of 1,645 feet. Its clarity has long been a subject of discussion and awe among tourists and scientists alike. A dip into this crystal clear lake will invigorate and rejuvenate you. The water temperature is 70+ degrees in the mid-summer and 40 degrees in the winter. The drive around the lake is 72 miles and will take you through many different communities, each with its own distinct personality. Experience a peacefulness as you gaze out over the lake, which is 22 miles long and 13 miles wide. Lake Tahoe has a rich maritime history from steamboats that were used for transportation in the early years, to those amazingly beautiful sleek wooden boats. BLACK WALL

Black Wall on Donner Summit is an iconic, world-class climbing area. With approximately 50 climbing routes, it is a prime destination for climbers. Whether you climb, hike or just like to look at nature’s wild beauty, these black granite towers at the west end of Donner Lake are some of the most dramatic terrain in the entire north Tahoe/Truckee region. Recently acquired by the Truckee Donner Land Trust, the craggy 400-foot Black Wall, the largest rock formation at Donner Summit and bracing stands of pine and alder, will now be preserved for climbers and nature lovers.

ROYAL GORGE

The Truckee Donner Land Trust acquired 3,000 acres on Donner Summit known as Royal Gorge, along with the 351 acres in Johnson Canyon above Donner Lake. This acquisition ensures all of Royal Gorge’s remarkable meadows, peaks, natural resources and the Nordic ski area have been protected forever and are open to the public for world-class recreation. • LYLE’S LOOKOUT – a short 3-mile hike provides spectacular view of the iconic Devil’s Peak. • ROWTON PEAK – a moderately strenuous 4-mile hike leads through several wildflower and bird areas, passes through some impressive volcanic geology, and offers expansion views of the Pacific Crest and the Granite Chief Wilderness. • POINT MARIAH – a moderate 5-mile route with dramatic viewpoint down 4,000 feet into the Royal Gorge of the North Fork of the American River.

PACIFIC CREST TRAIL

The Pacific Crest Trail (commonly abbreviated as the PCT) is a long-distance hiking and equestrian trail. It is a 2,663 mile long trail running from Mexico to Canada along the crest of the mountains in California, Oregon, and Washington. You’ll find yourself on sections of the Pacific Crest Trail on many hikes on Donner Summit. One popular local PCT hike is from Donner Summit to Squaw Valley, 6.0 miles one way. Hikers attempting the PCT in its entirety are commonly seen in July passing through.

A railroad

linking America’s east and west coasts had been a dream since the steam locomotive made its first appearance in the early 1830s. The need for such a link was dramatized by the discovery of gold in California in 1848 that brought thousands of people west. At that time, only two routes to the west were available: by wagon across the plains or by ship around South America. Traveling either of these could take seven months or more. The transcontinental railroad made the transporting of passengers and goods coast-to-coast considerably quicker and less expensive. Instead of taking seven months or more to go from New York to San Francisco, the railroad made the trip across the country in less than seven days. The Sesquicentennial Anniversary of the transcontinental railroad marks the spanning of the continent with rails, and a revolution to this area and the country. The railroad was critical to President Abraham Lincoln, realizing that he had to unite our Country. This was the period of the Civil War and in 1862 he passed the Pacific Railroad Act enabling the construction of the transcontinental railroad. The completion of the transcontinental railroad 150 years ago on May 10, 1869 forever changed the landscape of the Truckee-Donner Summit area, and was instrumental in the development of Truckee’s commerce and economy. The lumber industry was a major force in the area’s economy, supplying lumber to the silver mines of Virginia City. Before modern refrigeration, ice was the only way to keep food cold. Selling ice was a big business and enabled California fruit to be transportated to the East Coast in rail cars cooled with local ice. Once the tracks were built, the Truckee region became an accessible winter wonderland for anyone looking to enjoy its charms. The “Snowball Express” train ride excursions brought people from Sacramento into the Sierra to frolic in the snow. As the site of the nation’s first mechanized ski lift at Hilltop, visitors enjoyed winter sports and the ice carnival which was a big boost for the economy. Truckee became one of Hollywood’s favorite sites in the early part of the 20th century. The town’s location along the railroad line and ample accommodates made it an ideal area for filming. The Truckee-Donner Historical and Railroad Society are proudly celebrating the 150th anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad from May through September 2019. Over 25 events, historical talks, interpretive walks and more are scheduled.

Historical Walk: Jibboom Street – the “infamous” Red Light District, highlighting where the housing was and a history of the dance halls and other industries that thrived along Jibboom Street.

Docent led tours of the Old Jail Museum, built in 1875 and used until 1964, filled with interesting artifacts and colorful stories.

Truckee Railroad Caboose Museum, open weekends through Labor Day. This Southern Pacific Railroad caboose, in the original SP paint scheme, is packed with pictures, re-creations, and railroad artifacts depicting the impact of railroads in the formation and development of Truckee.

1 SASSARINI HOME — Built circa 1895 by the Sassarini family, this home was purchased by the McGwinn family in 1918 for ten dollars in gold coin. Doyle McGwinn grew up to be the town butcher for many years. 2 TITUS HOME — This home was constructed circa 1912 on a spot previously occupied by a Chinese boarding house. Designed by Will Bliss, it was the only architecturally designed home in Brickelltown. Frank Titus, Sr. built the home while working as an engineer on the narrow gauge railroad, which hauled lumber from Lake Tahoe to Truckee. 3 EATON HOMES — Originally built by Edward Brickell circa 1880 and then served as the Truckee Lumber Company store. Harry Eaton, Brickell’s son-in-law was a longtime railroad engineer. His son, Harry, grew up in this home and in the 1930s would ski to Tahoe City to deliver the mail when trains were snowbound in Truckee. 4 KRUGER C.B. WHITE HOUSE — W.H. Kruger, an original owner of the Truckee Lumber Company, built this home in 1873. In 1904, C.B. White, a banker and prominent citizen, bought the house. The house is on the National Register of Historic Places. 5 VETERANS MEMORIAL BUILDING — Sitting on the site of the palace-like McGlashan mansion which burned down in 1935. In 1939, members of the Truckee American Legion Post 439 constructed the present building which became a meeting place for most of the town’s community activities. Today you can take a short memorial pathway from the Old Jail Museum up to this historic site. 6 ROCKING STONE — Although the 17-ton stone no longer rocks, it is one of 25 known rocking stones in the world. The local Native Americans used this rock for drying their food and holding ceremonies as far back as 15,000 years ago. One of the early tribes painstakingly chipped away the rock to flatten the top and curve the bottom so animals couldn’t climb up to eat their food. 7 LOADING DOCK — Once a loading dock and freight station for the Southern Pacific Railroad, this building served as a warehouse for years. Much of Truckee’s lumber and ice were shipped from here. 8 RICHARDSON HOUSE — Warren Richardson built this Victorian home in 1887. The home stayed in the family until 1940. The house was used for many years as a boarding house, once known as “The Flop House.” 9 FIRST AND LAST CHANCE SALOON — It was the first saloon heading east and the last saloon heading west. It also housed Truckee’s original telephone office. 10 OLD JAIL MUSEUM — Built in 1875 out of native stone, the brick was added around 1904. The jail ran continuously until 1964, housing many infamous criminals. Showcasing early Truckee industries, the museum is open on summer weekends.

11 FLYING “A” — Built in 1936, this gas station was revitalized in 2007 to appear as a 1949 gas station. 12 SIERRA TAVERN — Originally built as a three-story building in 1928; a fourth floor was added in 1938. This was once the location of the law offices of Truckee’s famous citizen, Charles McGlashan, who wrote the History of the Donner Party. 13 RAILROAD MUSEUM — The first transcontinental railroad, logging railroads and tourism by rail all played an important part in Truckee’s history. The museum, located next to the depot, is housed in a Southern Pacific Railroad caboose. 14 ALTA HOTEL — Built as the Tahoe Saloon in the 1920s, a period of recreational excitement when Truckee’s winter months were alive with winter carnival activities. Previously, the Sassarini family operated the Flor D’Italia on this site, which burned in a fire in 1921. 15 CABONA’S — Founded in 1918, Cabona’s is the oldest retail establishment on Commercial Row. Its founder, Dave Cabona, originally sold fishing tackle, appliances and general merchandise. The eastern part of the store was a coffee shop. An embedded coffee cup is still in the sidewalk. 16 DEPOT AND THE FIRST TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROAD — While construction on the Sierra tunnels was delayed, advance teams began building 40 miles of track east and west of Truckee, moving supplies by wagon and sled. The line reached Truckee on April 3, 1868. Construction advanced eastward toward the meeting with Union Pacific at the rate of one mile daily. On May 10, 1869, the rails met at Promontory (Utah) to complete the first transcontinental railroad. The current depot was built in 1900. 17 CHINESE LAUNDRY — When the Transcontinental Railroad was completed in 1869, about 1,400 out-ofwork Chinese laborers traveled to Truckee, seeking new jobs building railroads through the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Within a few months, one-third of Truckee’s population was Chinese. 18 IL TROVATORE CLUB — Built in 1931, it was also known as the Sassarini Pool Hall. This was one hopping place in its hay-day when the Winter Carnivals were a big deal in this Hilltop area. 19 THE CAPITOL — Built in 1871 by William Hurd, this building was the first brick structure in Truckee. Originally “Hurd’s Saloon and Hall” and later the “Capitol Saloon”, it was used by the Piper Opera Company and then for the County Court.

20 I.O.O.F. HALL — Built in 1871, it is the second oldest building on the block. Rebekah officials from New York had been in San Francisco to organize a lodge there. On their way back to New York, they became snowbound in Truckee. Local women decided they would like to have a lodge in town and the second Rebekah Lodge in California was born. 21 REX HOTEL — Built over 100 years ago, it was converted to a hotel with steamheated rooms in 1913. During prohibition, the lower floor was a speakeasy called the “Silver Mirror.” 22 SQUEEZE IN — Frank Burckhalter operated the town’s first bank at this location. In 1869, a daring bank robbery was thwarted by the heroic action of bank employees and town citizens. 23 SCHAFFER HOUSE — Built in 1895 by George Schaffer, who, together with Joseph Gray, built the first lumber mill in 1867. The partnership was dissolved in 1871, when Schaffer moved his mill site out towards Martis Valley. By this time, Schaffer had made Truckee his home and had built at least three buildings that can still be found in town. 24 STAR HOTEL — Built by George Schaffer in 1885 after the first building on this site burned in May of 1885. There’s still debate in town as to whether George Schaffer built the Star Hotel for his large family’s residence or for workers in his mill. The house located directly west is believed to have been Schaffer’s private residence. 25 STONE GARAGE — This building is on the location of Truckee’s first building: Gray’s Station. The current stone building was constructed around 1911 and served as a carriage house and blacksmith shop. 26 TRUCKEE HOTEL — Built as the American Hotel in 1873, it has been through several name changes since. A major fire destroyed most of the building in 1909. The building was renamed to the Alpine Riverside for the 1960 Winter Olympics and was renamed the Truckee Hotel in 1977 after a major renovation. 27 CHINESE HERB SHOP — Built in 1878, this was the cornerstone of Truckee’s Chinatown—the second largest Chinese community on the west coast. The building later housed the Truckee Soda Works. 28 GRAY’S CABIN — Built in 1863 by Joseph Gray, this is Truckee’s oldest building. In 1909, the house was given to the Native Sons of the Golden West, Donner Parlor No. 162, and moved to its present location. 29 COMMUNITY ARTS CENTER — Truckee’s original elementary school building was on this site. The aging building was replaced by a new schoolhouse in 1936 and operated as the elementary school until a new school was built in town.
