Christmas Holiday Party Was a Night to Remember!
O
ver 400 CATT members and friends crowded the Regency Ballroom at the Hyatt Lake Tahoe in Incline Village on December 11. The 2015 party saw 435 people enjoy great socializing, delectable food, great music, and fabulous prizes. The party committee’s blue and white “Let It Snow” theme was carried out in all the decorations and the tables were set with a variety of sponsored gifts. Appetizers were served, raffle ticket sellers were out in force, the photo booth was so popular there was a line, and a PowerPoint of all award nominees and sponsors was shown in the time before everyone sat down to dinner. Master of Ceremonies Rich Molsby (Molsby & Bordner, LLP) presided over the evening program, introducing board members, party sponsors, CATT staff, and thanking the Party committee volunteers. The annual award winners were announced by Awards Committee Chairman Greg Haupert (Sierra Integrated Systems) and plaques were presented by outgoing CATT President Joshua Root (Root of Design Electric). Following the awards ceremony, Rich the MC became Rich the Auctioneer and along with his bid takers commanded some high prices for the ten live auction items. “Mr.D” DJ Services rounded out the evening with great dance music. The event serves a dual purpose: have fun celebrating the end of a very successful 2015 and raise funds for CATT. appy New Year! As we head into another great season I want to say thanks to all you contractors and other members professional enough to voluntarily join an association that helps promote our industry in a positive light to both the public and the myriad of agencies that supposedly oversee us. Your support of time and money is greatly appreciated and needed as CATT has its fingers in many pies, including a successful jobs to bid program, mixers, holiday party, huge golf tournament, clay shooting contest, and most importantly keeping an eye on fees and regulations throughout the state and the region that directly affect how we run our businesses. Anyone wanting to volunteer their time or money can please contact either myself (Mitch@mitchclarin.com or 530.308.9124) or the CATT office. We will also be asking for volunteers to help put together a compilation of Construction Industry Standards from Asphalt to Zypex as a technical manual for use by residential contractors to explain expectations to both clients and sub-contractors. A written guideline of industry standards should be helpful with those picky clients who hold a magnifying glass to every aspect of the project or with the sloppy contractor who thinks they are performing to acceptable standards when they are not. Special thanks goes out to outgoing President Joshua Root who has done an excellent job running the association, along with our exceptional staff of Pat, Amanda, Peg, and Kim who collectively keep the association moving forward in a seamless manner, please stop by and say hi!

The next LGAC meeting is Monday, January 11, 4:00 p.m., here at the CATT office. First speaker is Placer County Building Manager Jeff Thomas. Jeff will talk about water quality requirements for construction permits and how Placer County will be implementing those requirements. The second speaker is Dale Cox, Chairman of the Squaw Valley Public Service District (SVPSD) Board of Directors. The SVPSD serves residents, businesses, and visitors in Squaw Valley. SVPSD services include water supply, sewage service, solid waste service, fire protection, and emergency medical services. This is a casual, get acquainted session with Dale so he can meet CATT members and they can meet him.

Lincoln Construction is excited to announce that Chris Tennant has become a minority owner of the company, and has been promoted to Vice President. “Chris has the educational background and passion to take Mt. Lincoln Construction into the future,” said Paul Zarubin, President of Mt. Lincoln Construction. Chris joined the company in 2010 as a Project and Office Manager, and has effectively managed numerous projects and client relationships. Born and raised in Truckee with a degree in Construction Management from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, Chris brings a unique combination of local knowledge and technical expertise to the company and its clients. Truckee Building & Safety Division News Top Ten Ways to Avoid an Accessibility Lawsuit at One’s Business 1. Understand that ADA compliance has been required by federal law since 1990. It is not optional, nor are existing businesses exempt or grandfathered. 2. Have a CASp certificate identifying that the premises are in compliance “or” obtain a CASp report which will identify what needs to be upgraded and assist with creating a plan (which provides a layer of protections against lawsuits). 3. Provide an accessible parking space with a level loading and unloading area, blue outlined striping, a sign designating the space as parking for the disabled, and a $250 fine sign. 4. Provide a clear and unobstructed accessible path of travel from the parking space to the place of business. The minimum walkway width is 48 inches and the minimum corridor width is 36 inches clear. 5. Provide handrails for ramps (defined as greater than 5% slope). 6. Provide compliant surface heights and knee clearances for reception/sales counters, bar counters, and work/dining tables.
8. Provide a minimum 32 inch clear entry door measured with the door in the fully opened, 90 degree position. 9. Provide accessible toilet rooms to include wall and door signage, door hardware, clear maneuvering space, compliant dispenser heights, compliant vanities, etc… 10. One of the most important steps a contractor takes is competent person training. A compliant competent person is an employee capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards and conditions, and is authorized to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate these hazards. In construction, competent person training is required for ladders, scaffolding, fall protection, confined spaces, hazardous materials, trenching and excavation, material handling and storage, and powered platforms and man lifts. Nevada requires OSHA 10 hour training for all construction workers and 30 hour training for supervisors and owners. The renewal requirement was eliminated this year, yet many conduct frequent training to continually improve employee safety awareness. Numerous California contractors provide 10 and 30 hour training even though no law compels them to do this. The objective is to reduce accidents and injuries to lower their workers’ compensation cost. Best practices in safety training focuses on pertinent and relevant material. Using hands-on learning techniques, your people will retain and use the information. By promoting the value of job and workplace safety, a contractor enhances and improves their employees’ attitudes, efficiency, performance and quality. The objective of a good safety program is to improve your three P’s: People, Productivity and Profit! he primary goal of a good company safety program is eliminating or reducing expensive accidents and injuries. Employers are responsible to provide a safe and healthful workplace. Depending on a contractor’s number of employees, there are specific safety requirements. Regardless of company size, employers must train employees on the hazards in their job and workplace. The employer is also responsible to enforce their safety rules. This includes disciplinary action for safety violations. Intentional acts, like removing a guard device, are grounds for immediate termination. Bad attitudes, poor training and unsafe work behaviors can be a business owner’s greatest nightmare and eventual downfall. OSHA violations and penalties are only the start of the expenses from work accidents and injuries. There are substantial direct medical costs and deceptive indirect costs involved. Workers’ compensation is pricey for employers that have a good safety record and expensively prohibitive with a poorly managed program. Insurance underwriters analyze many risk factors. They rate a company based on industry data and past performance compared to others. When managed effectively, safety is a profit center for successful businesses. Most companies recognize the value of human capital and realize trained employees are their greatest asset. Like most areas in business, this requires a financial commitment and investment to achieve. The winter season is a good time for employee training in preparation for next year’s work.
