bout one year ago the CATT board of directors decided to explore options for a new fundraiser in an effort to further increase member benefits. Four CATT members, Julie Sanservino (Boulder Ridge Sash & Door), Ryan Swenson (Simpson StrongTie), Gary Crosswhite (Meridian Concrete) and Ted Reviglio (Western Nevada Supply) stepped up to the plate and took charge. They spent countless hours researching, planning, and organizing a premium raffle. Unfortunately the timing didn’t work out this year but stay tuned because this raffle is going to be awesome once it happens. A big thank you to the raffle committee for their hard work. Another thank you to our golf committee for organizing another stellar golf tournament. were 80 “Best of” categories. HGTV (Home & Garden Television) is coming to our area! For the past 17 years, HGTV has created and given away a “Dream Home” through a sweepstakes. The Dream Home location has changed every year. While scouting locations in the Truckee North Tahoe region, HGTV Dream Home Planner Jack Thomasson saw the Ward-Young Architecture & Planning design for the Highlands Fire Station at Northstar and was intrigued. After Schaffer’s Mill Golf & Lake Club was selected as the location for the 2014 “Dream Home,” the talent at Ward-Young was engaged to design that home. David Bourke, lead architect, and Larry Young, Principal, worked closely with the HGTV team to achieve the Tahoe vision. Approximate size of the Dream Home is 3,200 SF. Construction is underway with completion expected by mid-October.

Evolution and Change of the Rain/Snow Gutter by Kevin O’Connor, Gutterglove of Nevada County

ou’ve heard the complaints about gutters in snow country—“They just get torn off,” or else they provide the perfect setting for ice dams and icicles to form with damage soon to follow. As if the dams and icicles weren’t enough trouble by themselves, there is often “creep out” or “glaciating” of snow and ice which can curl back under the roof eaves and damage the structure or break off and cause other damage or injuries. But what’s good about gutters? Plenty! They will contain rain and snow melt and divert it to prevent damage to the home, building or landscaping. Controlling the water runoff can assist in erosion control and help with water quality BMPs and TRPA regulations. Gutters are the little extras that no one thinks about, but they can add to one’s enjoyment of a home—even in the worst of weather. Gutters, like most products, are constantly evolving. CATT members are familiar with the age old “zig-zag” heat tape solutions “artistically” placed on the lower reaches of a roof slope. Sometimes heat tape is also placed in the bottom of an open gutter. The cables sit in the open air which allows the heat to simply dissipate upwards, at best creating small tunnels in the ice and snow. This setup is horribly ineffective and costly to operate! It is also a serious fire hazard and requires constant maintenance to pull the pine

needles and leaves out of the cables. Worst of all, the sliding ice and snow tears the cables and/or gutter loose or rips it completely off. The “solution” has just created another problem for the homeowner! So what’s the latest in gutter technology and design? Plenty! Features include a mesh cover over a rigid frame that prevents any debris from getting in the gutter, and is angled the same as the roof pitch to prevent pine needle buildup or ice/snow clogging. New systems take into account the need to be extremely energy efficient, with heat delivered by self regulating heat cable or controlled by thermostat if desired. The new systems use significantly less heat cable, saving electricity and $$. The whole gutter/cover combination becomes the contained heat source melting the snow or ice—no more little tunnels or ice dams! Even matching the gutter color to the home color is available for the discriminating homeowner trying to comply with HOA rules. Gutters in snow country are often forgotten or ignored because of past failures. It’s time to give gutters a new look… for a change! e give a “hand” to a contractor interested in getting a license in another state where fingerprints aren’t first on the list for “background” checks. However, I must “point out” that it involves a definite window of opportunity. Another inquiry helps put the “contract” into contracting... Q: Your Company helped me obtain my General contractor’s license in CA and NV. I am now interested in obtaining an Arizona license. Will I qualify for reciprocity? Secondly, when I applied for my CA and NV licenses I was required to get fingerprinted. Does Arizona also require that I get fingerprinted? A: It’s nice to hear from you again. If your qualifying individual has been licensed for the previous five years in CA or NV and they took the equivalent trade exam in CA or NV then yes, that individual would qualify for reciprocity and be granted a waiver of the trade exam in Arizona. In most cases, you are not required to get fingerprinted for the State of Arizona however they just started a new program where they require individuals listed on the license application to complete a Background Check. The Background Check can be completed online, and a copy of the receipt you receive after completing the background check must be submitted along with your license application. The license application and its receipt will not be accepted until four calendar days after the date of receipt and no more than 60 days thereafter. Q: Can an individual have two sole owner licenses? A: Yes. There is nothing in the CA Contractor law that prevents an individual from holding two sole proprietor licenses. Q: I came across your website and I wanted to say you have a lot of useful information for people in the construction industry and as a contractor in CA, AZ, and NV I thank you for the insight you provide. I have a question I was hoping you could answer for me directly. I’m about to get contracts made for my California license and I haven’t had any made in quite a while. With changes in law all the time I’m not exactly sure what I am supposed to have on my contract to be completely legal. Is there anything you know about this? In regards to mechanic’s lien stuff am I supposed to add something on my contracts regarding a situation like that? A: If you intend on handling home improvement projects, the law is very specific regarding what must be included in a contract. You can go to the CSLB website (www.cslb.ca.gov) and check out the publication entitled “Contracting For Success, A Contractor’s Guide to Home Improvement Contracts”. This should give you all the information you may require. However, last July, the CSLB website also posted all the new Mechanic’s lien notices. These all took effect 7/1/ 2012 and I would suggest going to their website for a list of these forms. Finally, I would further suggest contacting a construction attorney who specializes in Construction/Contract law to review your contract (whether home improvement or not) to determine if you have dotted all your ‘i’s’ and crossed all your ‘t’s’.
