2010 Manager’s Recap 8
Canyon Nine
B
ringing our very own golf director on board proved to be a successful move. Ryan Bopp took the Canyon Nine to the next level by providing clinics, lessons and an overall golf presence to the Club. The course saw over 5,000 rounds of play in 2010 with 1,400 from non-residents, which adds up to more than $14,000 in green fees! Our events and tournaments continued to grow with our highest programming turnout in Canyon Nine’s history. Glowball proved to be a hit once more, while Conquer the Canyon picked up quite a few participants eager to enjoy a delicious lunch after their round. Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete the 2010 Canyon Nine Survey. The results reinforced the decision to offer a golf director on property and provided us with the feedback needed to continue to grow the programming into 2011. Ryan is busy planning more events, clinics and tournaments for residents and their guests, as well as outside play. Additionally, we will continue our winter play option through April 1, as well as broaden our marketing of the weekday public play option to make the Canyon Nine a truly successful course. 8
The Club at Town Center
C
lub usage continued to grow throughout 2010. The clubhouse facility enjoyed a 10% increase, while the pools saw a 13% increase from 2009, which translates to more new faces among all the regulars. Event participation in all areas of the Club continued to grow throughout the year, including an increase in private events as more non-residents became aware of our facilities. There are already six weddings on the calendar for 2011, plus several annual fundraisers we are proud to host. Based on rental feedback, we will be offering several incentives throughout the year for various party bookings so make sure to check the website and newsletter for further details. Our fitness and sports program continues to grow and mold to the needs of those using the facility and programs. Christina met the demand for a diverse fitness schedule by incorporating new and unique classes to the schedule, and she’ll continue to do so in the New Year. Residents can look forward to new group trainings options, as well as programs geared to the individual that build upon the workouts available through our regular fitness classes. The Youth Basketball League busted at the seams in 2010, forcing us to come up with our 2011 plan of two age groups to better accommodate the demand for the program. Finally, as more residents utilize the tennis courts throughout the year, we are actively looking to create a more diverse and year-round program for those at all levels. The activities department saw tremendous growth throughout the year with successful camp, after school and adult programming. With feedback during events as well as from the survey, we are looking forward to implementing several new and improved programs. Camp will extend its hours to 6 pm, children ages 11 to 15 will have a new program called Tween Scene to enjoy, and adults can look forward to a wider range of social gatherings hosted on a quarterly basis. Our community events continued to be a popular destination for those throughout Reno—even in the cold, windy weather—as evidenced by the turnout to Touch-a-Truck & Fall Festival. And, we’re pleased to report that our 2011 community event schedule is already planned and available at mysomersett.com. The pool was the place to be all summer long! With increased shade, warmer water temperatures and expanded October hours, it was a fun and busy aquatic season. We received lots of compliments throughout the season on the professionalism of the staff and we hope to improve even further in 2011. The balancing of adult and child time in the lap pool continues to be a struggle, but we found that our new signage reduced some of the confusion. We are looking into our hours for 2011 based on feedback received throughout the summer. Plus, our poolside cabana received great feedback on the menu, hours and customer service. We are excited to offer more unique specials in 2011 to keep everyone’s taste buds satisfied. Remember to visit www.mysomersett.com for further information on all areas of the Club. Our goal in 2011 is to expand available features and improve communication about what is happening here at the Club and Canyon Nine. Save the site into your web favorites for quick access to all of your favorite happenings right here in Somersett. Thank you all for making 2010 another great year for the Canyon Nine and The Club at Town Center. We’re looking forward to making next year just as exciting.

Another Incredible Year at Sierra Canyon!
W
ith the start of a new year, it’s always good to reflect on the past year’s accomplishments as incentive to continue improving upon all there is to offer at Sierra Canyon. I’m proud to report that several projects were completed in 2010, including enhancements of the Aspen Lodge and its beautiful common areas. Moving into 2011, let me assure you that your Association-paid staff will continue to keep Sierra Canyon headed in the right direction. It’s our goal to successfully complete even more projects to enhance the community that brings added value to the Del Webb lifestyle into which you bought. To see just a few of the 2010 projects completed, you need only climb the stairs to the second floor of the Aspen Lodge. There you’ll find the Sierra Canyon library as well as several new storage cabinets lining the second floor walking track. The library was completed thanks to homeowners Robert Redstone and Bob Jacobson, who volunteered their time for weeks. The community living room area has no more clutter and looks great now due to their efforts! And the bookshelves are also full of both books and magazines thanks to all of the residents who donated as well. Besides the library improvements in 2010, the Association added three new flat screen televisions in the fitness center that make viewing much easier, and established a check and credit/debit card-only purchase system with a computerized point of sale system to help us keep clean records of all Association-related transactions and deposits. Finally, we were able to negotiate down a number of ongoing outside community vendor contracts including our phone, Internet and cable bill and other vendors. Keeping these vendor costs down means
the money adds up, and it’s just another example of our ongoing commitment to tracking and reducing the Association’s budget. You can feel confident that the Sierra Canyon Board of Directors and Association employees are working tirelessly to keep your assessments maintained at a lower level. Many landscaping projects were completed within Sierra Canyon during the past year as well, and these projects will keep the long-term landscape expenses reduced in the future. An example is the rock wall behind Village Two. We shored up and stabilized the top of the wall that had been eroding, thus avoiding major erosion repairs being required down the road. Many straw waddles and rock barriers were added to other erosion-prone areas as well. We thinned out heavy mustard and tumbleweeds in sections of the community and added a seed mix of sagebrush, rabbit brush, grasses and wildflowers in the hopes that these “good” plants will take over these areas in the coming years, leaving them maintenance-free in the future and again saving the Association money. We want you to enjoy peace of mind in 2011 knowing that your Association staff will continue to look after your beautiful community with the utmost attention to detail. We understand that keeping costs low without jeopardizing the great way of life you have grown to expect at Sierra Canyon is important. I hope this New Year brings the very best for you and your family and from everyone at Sierra Canyon, enjoy the holidays!
