19 January/February Calendar
14 a note from the SOA... From a Year of Change to a Year of Communication
T
he last twelve months marked a year of change for Somersett Owners Association. From management companies and office location, to parking policies and the violation process, it was a busy year for all involved. The Board of Directors worked closely with the staff and transition committee to develop a strong grasp on the financial state of the Association. With a new collection company on board as well, the Association began collecting large payments on delinquent accounts. All in all, it was a year that put the Association on solid ground and ready to enter 2012 with positive opportunities and improvements. With the start of the New Year, one of the main goals of staff, transition members and the Board has been to improve communication and understanding with homeowners. This not only includes communication from Board of Directors’ meetings about operations of the Association, but also an increase in the understanding of rules, policies and strategies. We encourage all homeowners to bookmark www.mysomersett.com on their computers as a resource for information about the Association, the Club and the Canyon Nine as well. Additionally, homeowners are encouraged to use www.rmiconnect.com/somersett for information on their account balances and to access Association documents, including minutes, rules and regulations, and aesthetic guidelines. To encourage communication, the Association will host various programs each quarter for all homeowners, including a new resident orientation, a social and a seminar. The social and seminar will have different topics and themes each time. The programs will be a great way to meet other members of the community and find out about more about the Association. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments or concerns.

Canyon Nine Recap
The Canyon Nine remained consistent in 2011 as we reached our target of 5,000 rounds of golf. Our events and tournaments continued to grow as well. Glowball proved to be a hit once again, while Conquer the Canyon picked up quite a few participants eager to be added to the championship plaque. The winter play option was also popular and will continue in 2012. Our goal in the New Year is to broaden our marketing of the public play option to make the Canyon Nine a truly successful course that gets better every year. With the new contract between the SOA and Somersett Golf & Country Club, Cris Novich, PGA, will be busy planning more events, clinics and tournaments for all residents with the expertise of a full golf department behind him. Somersett Golf & Country Club will manage all 2012 Canyon Nine programs, events and instruction. Please contact the pro shop with any questions at 787-1800 x704.
The Club at Town Center Recap
Our fitness and sports program continued to grow and mold to the needs of those using the facility and programs. The sports department met the demand for a diverse fitness schedule by incorporating new fitness challenges and adding unique classes to the schedule. The fitness and sports department will continue its growth with tennis, TRX and Fit Express programming in the New Year. Residents can look forward to new group training options, as well as programs geared to the individual that build upon the workouts available through our regular fitness classes. The wildly popular Youth Basketball League busted at the seams, forcing us to stay with our 2011 plan of two age groups to better accommodate the demand for the program. Finally, as more residents utilized the tennis courts throughout the year, we were able to
create a more diverse and year-round program for players at all levels. The activities department saw tremendous growth throughout the year as well, with successful camp, after school and adult programming. Fourteen weeks of summer camp were planned, with almost every week meeting the maximum number of participants. Our after school program has doubled in size and is now managed by two activity leaders. Our community events continued to be a popular destination for people across Reno. Farmers’ Market was a hit once again, and we added Music on the Greeneven in the cold, windy weather. If turnout is any indication, this was very much enjoyed and fun for the whole family. We’re pleased to report that our 2012 community event schedule is already planned and available online. With feedback during events, as well as from the survey, we are looking forward to implementing several new and improved programs. The pool was the place to be all summer long! With increased shade, warmer water temperatures and expanded October hours, it was a fun and busy aquatic season. We received lots of compliments throughout the season on the professionalism of the staff and we hope to improve even further in 2012. The balancing of adult and child time in the lap pool continues to be a struggle, but we found that our new signage reduced some of the confusion. Our poolside cabana received great feedback on its menu, hours and customer service. We are excited to offer more unique specials in 2012 to keep everyone’s taste buds satisfied. I look forward to another great year at the Club!

Winter Pet Safety
I
n areas that get cold and snowy, temperatures can get downright dangerous for pets, especially for those who aren’t built for the cold. Here are a few tips to help keep the colder months safe for everyone:
John A. Koehm, D.V.M., F.A.V.D. • Cathy A. Connelly, M.S. D.V.M. Dawn Hess, D.V.M. • Brian McLaughlin, D.V.M. Kelly MacLellan, D.V.M., M.Sc., M.Vet.Sc., D.A.C.V.S.
• Keep an eye out for automotive fluid: Both antifreeze and windshield washer fluids are hazardous to animals. Keep pets out of garages and other automotive areas. • Wipe de-icing products off paws: If you walk your dog on de-iced roads or sidewalks, wipe off paws, legs and stomach when they come in out of the cold. • Be wary of rodent poison: You may see mice move in when the temperature drops. If you exterminate rodents, use humane and safe traps rather than poisons. • Watch the temperature: Indoor pets should sleep off the floor and away from drafts. Outside pets should have shelter with raised bedding. Though frostbite and hypothermia is more rare in dogs than in humans, it can happen. • Keep cats away from your car: Cats love warmth, so after you park the car, the heat from the engine can entice even the wariest of felines. Once under the hood, your cat could be seriously hurt the next time you start your engine. Bang on the hood and honk your horn before starting your engine. With a few simple precautions, the wintertime can be a favorite time of year for both you and your pet. —SUBMITTED BY COMMUNITY ANIMAL HOSPITAL

Life at Sierra Canyon • • •
R
etirement life at Sierra Canyon by Del Webb doesn’t get any better in the state of Nevada. Just ask the residents! The standard refrain is, “There’s so much to do, it’s like living in a vacation resort day in and day out!” Others have compared Sierra Canyon to life on a cruise ship, where there’s really no end to what you can do each and every day. Why are these comparisons made? Simply because the Del Webb brand of lifestyle allows residents to join a variety of organized resident groups that involve everything from card games and wine groups to knitting clubs and outdoor groups. Then, there are the many day and overnight trips filled with busy itineraries that are available to our residents. Other activities include a variety of fitness classes such as Tai Chi, Yoga, Pilates, body sculpting, Zumba and water aerobics, any of which may be of interest to those residents ready to get back in shape during their retirement. These activities are all available and centrally located within the community at the Aspen Lodge recreation center. If the trips, fitness classes and more than forty different resident groups of varying interests don’t keep you busy, there are always the special speakers, educational seminars and social events held at the lodge. The social events include holiday and theme parties plus individual community socials at the different parks in the villages. Odds are good you won’t find a better social life than the one found here at Sierra Canyon! For 2012, make it your New Year’s resolution to participate in the variety of social offerings listed in this article and on our community calendar at www.sierracanyonreno.com. I am confident that you will not be disappointed after taking advantage of the many opportunities afforded within our community. Hope to see you at one of our many events!
