Congratulations to our 2011 Reno Tahoe Odyssey Teams!
his year we had an all men’s and women’s team. Overall, the men placed 61st finishing in 25 hours and the women followed right behind the men finishing in 27 hours. There was quite the competitive spirit in both teams, with the women coming in before the men on Donner Downfall, which is an uphill 8 mile screamer. This journey brought 24 people, of all levels of running, together. What made the teams so great was the attitude and team spirit. Together, we all worked to accomplish a huge goal, as well as achieve personal goals. All the laughs, sweat and aches are now memories to last a lifetime. Thank you all for coming out and experiencing the true odyssey.

Just running in the store for a minute….should you TETHER Fido? 1. It’s an open invitation to thieves. In some places, it’s illegal. Many cities have ordinances against tying dogs up in public places. Many thieves may take this opportunity to take Fido home with them. 2. Fido may feel defensive. According to the American Humane Society, dogs tethered for long periods can become highly aggressive. At the very least, being tied up can make Fido feel vulnerable. A defensive dog is more likely to bite someone that comes within reach, even a child. 3. It’s a great opportunity for the Great Escape. It’s not uncommon for pets to slip out of their collars or harnesses while tied up. He may chew through his leather or nylon leash. 4. Other dogs may not be so friendly. When your dog is left alone on a leash, he is defenseless. If a stray dog or a dog that’s off-leash gets aggressive, there’s little Fido can do. If he is attacked while tethered, he can’t get away, and he could be injured. 5. What you don’t see could hurt Fido. Anyone who walks past your dog can interact with him while he’s tied up and alone. Children might think that it’s funny to feed your dog bubble gum or something else he shouldn’t have. 6. Extreme temperature can be dangerous. Extreme heat or cold— neither is good for a tethered dog. Heat stroke or hyperthermia is a serious health issue that can cause permanent damage leading to death. The Dark Side of the Sun By Dr. Jennifer Janiga
R
A Northern Nevada Dermatologist’s Insight on What To Do After The Sun Has Left Its Mark On You emember that Coppertone ad, the one with the little pig-tailed girl whose bikini bottom was being tugged down by the pup, revealing a remarkably vivid tan line? Parents and kids alike desired that deep, dark cappuccino color. But it doesn’t take the towering stacks of scientific research for many people to realize their skin has been wounded by overexposure. Signs include brown spots, enlarged blood vessels, lines and wrinkles, sagging skin and even skin cancer. As a practicing dermatologist, I’ve seen the sun’s impact in all its unpleasantness. In addition to getting an annual skin exam, here are a few thoughts on what to do if you’re showing symptoms of sun damage.
Find A Sunscreen You Will Wear This sounds obvious, but many people buy sun block with good intentions only to discover that they don’t like their purchase. So, it’s never applied. When comparing sunscreens, make sure it’s SPF 30 or greater and is broad spectrum, protecting against both UVA and UVB rays. Brown Spots They’re from solar exposure, not aging. Which is why they appear in areas that get sun, like the face, hands and chest. Laser treatments and bleaching creams along with sunscreen can greatly improve the appearance.
Enlarged Blood Vessels Enlarged blood vessels occur all over the body, but most commonly on the face. Telangiectases appear as red and/or blue vessels that look like small lines. Depending on the size they can be easily treated with a pulsed dye laser or by injecting a special medication. Skin Lines Lines are another manifestation of the sun’s wrath. For early fine lines, Botox™ or Dysport™ may be all you need. For deeper lines, filler products like Juvederm™ and/or Restylane™ may help. Elastosis Sun exposure can actually break down the skin’s elastin and cause sagging. The best option may be a combination of one or more of the above with a laser tightening procedure or a facelift. At 4,000 feet, Northern Nevadans are literally closer to the sun which can exacerbate solar exposure to the skin. So, don’t mess around. Find a sun block you like and use it. And be sure to schedule a yearly skin exam for early detection. If you have questions or would like more feedback, please contact me at drjennifer@janigamds.com and I’ll get back to you personally. Author’s Bio: Dr. Jennifer Janiga is a Board Certified Dermatologist at Janiga MDs, the Northern Nevada dermatology and plastic surgery practice she runs with her husband, Dr. Timothy Janiga, a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. Summer Nuisances
s I begin to put my thoughts together to write this article, I’m looking outside at yet another stormy day at Sierra Canyon! Will summer never come? When it finally does arrive, we will see birdfeeders, off-leash dog walkers and weeds popping up everywhere. These items are synonymous with summer but they can also become problematic, resulting in hurt feelings and violation letters from the management company. Pigeons are beginning to take roost within Sierra Canyon neighborhoods more and more due to birdfeed being left out without the use of pigeon deterrent birdfeeders. With more pigeons come a variety of nuisances including increased bird droppings in neighboring home patio areas and the increased possibility of disease spreading from pigeon feces to humans. Pigeon feces can carry a variety of diseases including ornithosis, encephalitis, Newcastle disease, cryptococcosis, toxoplasmosis, salmonella food poisoning and more. Additionally, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, pigeon feces may, under the right conditions, harbor air-borne spores of the causal agent of histoplasmosis, a systemic fungus disease that can affect humans. Eliminating food supplies to pigeons is the most important step to reducing pigeon populations and the possibility of both neighborly tensions and health threats. Off-leash dogs are another problematic concern. As summer finally arrives and as we grow in population, this will continue to become a larger and larger issue. Dog owners must be aware that the areas
Sierra Canyon
behind the Lodge, the grass area across from the Del Webb Sales Center and other grassy areas within Sierra Canyon are not areas to run dogs off leash. City of Reno ordinance requires that all dogs be leashed within the city limits and all of Sierra Canyon, including walking trails, grass areas, etc., fall under that category. Unfortunately, we have had a few dog attacks resulting from off-leash dogs, and we can avoid more if dogs remain leashed during walks. We have also encountered more and more dog feces along the walking trails. If this becomes a major nuisance, we will have to hire a company for waste disposal – a necessity that will be very costly to our Association budget. Lastly, weeds are a constant issue all summer long. Our Sierra Canyon Management Company, Associated Management, Inc., tours the community twice a month for violations, and weeds are one of the most common violations they enforce. Please be sure to either pull weeds yourselves or hire a company or individual to pull and spray weeds for you. A pre-emergent is always very helpful for long-term reduction/elimination of weeds. If we all do our part in addressing issues such as those mentioned in this article, we will have less long-term costs to the Association and a much friendlier atmosphere within the community from neighbor to neighbor! Please take the time this year to be cognizant of these important topics. Let’s continue to make Sierra Canyon the incredible community you moved here to enjoy!
