pring is here and the sun is out, the weather is warm and we hope you’ll join us for all of the great events we have planned right here in your neighborhood! In May, pick up a great bargain at the community’s spring garage sale and then head over to The Club at Town Center for our seventh annual Springfest!

We have so many memories to make this summer in Somersett, and signing up for events has never been easier. Now you can check the events calendar on mysomersett.com from your mobile and register for events from the comfort of your own home! The summer season will officially kick off in June with the Club’s Outdoor Adventures summer camp program, swim lessons, the second annual Music on the Green Series and the return of everyone’s favorite event—the farmer’s market!

Spring Garage Sale Saturday, May 5, 7 am–noon What’s warm weather without a garage sale or two? Get ready to bargain for great deals at the semi-annual Somersett Garage Sale, one of just two community-dictated garage sales per year! Maps will be available for pick up starting Friday, May 4 from noon to 9 pm and Saturday starting promptly at 7 am at The Club at Town Center.

Participants are welcome to put up signs during the sale only to direct people to their street and house. We have arranged for the Salvation Army to have trucks located in Somersett to pick up any items not sold at the sale. To make arrangements for same day pick-up, please contact Steve Miller at 688-4555 x226.

Seventh Annual Springfest Saturday, May 5, 11 am–3 pm $2 per person per ride for pony rides; $1 for cotton candy Spring is in the air, and it’s about to hit Somersett! The Club at Town Center will burst to life during our seventh annual Springfest thanks to music by DJ Kyle Dory and yummy food specials from the poolside cabana. Kids will enjoy pony rides, face painting, bounce houses and more. Springfest is an event all your friends and family will enjoy, and we hope to see you there!

Kids’ Corner Hours & Programming Monday to Thursday: 8:30 am–12:30 pm and 5:30–7:30 pm Friday: 8:30 am–12:30 pm; Saturday: 8 am–12 pm Closed Sunday Kids’ Corner Policy Reminders • Kids’ Corner will only accept children 2 to 6 years of age. All children must be registered by the parent for Kids’ Corner prior to their first use of the room. Registration forms are available at the concierge or online at mysomersett.com. • Parents with children who are not bathroom independent must remain on the Club premises at all times when their child is in Kids’ Corner. This includes such activities as playing tennis, aerobics, using the fitness room, swimming or during a special Club function. • For the morning time slots, parents may sign their child up for either 8:30–10:30 am or 10:30 am–12:30 pm Monday through Friday and either 8–10 am or 10 am–12 pm on Saturday. Evening slot is from 5:30–7:30 pm Monday through Thursday.

• The room operates on a 6 to 1 ratio, with a maximum of 12 kids allowed at any given time. To accommodate this ratio, the Club requires reservations to be made at least 24 hours in advance to ensure staffing. Each Saturday at 12 pm, reservations will be opened for the upcoming week. • All children must be dropped off in Kids’ Corner within 15 minutes of their reservation time. If the parent has not checked their child in within the 15-minute window, the reservation becomes void and the spot will be opened to a child on the wait list. • No show reservations will result in a $10 fee per child due to the Club. Cancellations must be received by 8 am on the day of the reservation.

Junior Explorers Camp August 13–17 Junior Explorers Camp will run from 8 am to 4 pm Monday through Wednesday. On Thursday, campers will arrive in the afternoon and have an overnight adventure through Friday at the Club, putting the entire weeks’ worth of camping and outdoor living skills to the test!

Throughout the week, campers will learn how to set up a tent, read a compass and other outdoor survival skills. Lunch will be provided each day. For more information, please contact Emily Eoff at 775787-4500 x317.

Kids’ Club is a FREE club for children ages 7–10! All Kids’ Club members receive a membership card and a quarterly newsletter filled with interactive games, trivia and birthday wishes. Tuesday, Thursdays & Saturdays 10 to 11 am 25 person max

This is an invigorating, joint-friendly workout in the lap pool. If there are more than 10 participants in the class, the entire pool will be used. This summer, the Club will accommodate the everpopular and growing size of water fitness classes by adding additional classes if necessary.

Pool Rules 1. Use of the pool is restricted to hours when a lifeguard is on duty. Swimmers are asked to use caution at all times when utilizing the pool area. Any incident should be reported to a lifeguard immediately.

2. Children using flotation devices must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Children under the age of 6 must be closely supervised by an accompanying adult.

3. Children wearing diapers must have vinyl pants over the diaper and under the bathing suit. The Club reserves the right to ask a child to be removed from the water if he or she is not wearing vinyl pants.

4. Proper bathing suits are required for swimming. No cut-off shorts or thongs allowed.

5. Please shower before entering pool.

6. No diving in any area of the pool.

7. No glass containers of any kind permitted on pool deck.

8. No food or drink allowed in the pool.

9. Persons with skin disorders may be denied use of the pool.

10. No pets allowed within pool deck area. Exceptions will be made for guide animals.

11. Adult swim is for persons 18 years or older.

12. No rafts permitted without approval from management.

13. No running, horse playing or water guns permitted within pool deck area.

14. Kickboards are for use as swimming aids and/or swimming instruction; no standing, sitting or horse playing allowed.

15. The pool furniture is not to be removed from its location on the pool deck.

16. Members are not permitted to bring in outside coolers larger than 12”x12”x12” without prior management approval.

17. Refrain from talking to lifeguards while they are on the stands.

18. Lifeguards’ instructions must be obeyed at all times by members and guests for maximum safety.

Slide Rules 1. Swimmers must stay clear of the catch pool and slide exit area. Do not reach into the slide from the deck area.

2. Riders must exit the catch pool immediately after use.

3. Children less than 48 inches tall who are unable to swim may only use the slide with a parent.

4. Parents may assist their child out of the water in the catch pool if necessary, but they cannot stand in front of the slide to catch their child. Parents may wait at the steps if needed.

5. Only one person at a time allowed down the slide, excluding a parent and small child as described above.

6. Please walk up the steps and make sure the catch pool is empty before beginning slide run.

7. Riders must go down on their back with feet first.

8. No flotation devices of any kind permitted on the slide, including those in bathing suits.

9. No goggles, sunglasses, hats or any object that may fall off into the water permitted on the slide.

10. No diving from the slide into the catch pool upon exiting the flume.

SPA RULES 1. Extended exposure to hot water or vapors may be detrimental to the health of elderly persons and persons with heart conditions, diabetes or high or low blood pressure.

2. People with skin, ear, genital or other body infections, open sores or wounds should not use the hot tub because of the possibility of spreading infection.

4. Horse playing, splashing and swimming are not permitted in the spas.

5. The adult spa adjacent to the lap pool is for adults (18+) only.

6. Children 12 years of age or younger who wish to use the family spa must be supervised by an adult.

7. Children under 12 years of age should not use the spa for more than 10 consecutive minutes.

8. Parents are to warn children not to allow water in their mouths as this can cause infection and illness.

• Aesthetic Guidelines: The Board approved updated guidelines to address various issues that have developed over the last year regarding playgrounds, awnings, shade structures and landscaping.

Guidelines were also reformatted for better flow and readability, including new submittal forms. The new guidelines are available online or may be requested through the SOA. • Rules & Regulations: The Board approved updated rules and regulations for the Club at Town Center. Changes included the age restrictions to Kids’ Corner, resident usage of facility for hobby clubs, pool party size limitations, and outside alcohol. The new rules are available online or may be requested through the SOA. • Reserve Projects: The Board approved the replacement of the carpet in the Club’s locker rooms with slip resistant rubber squares as well as the installation of new wall pads for the sports court walls to replace the carpeting. Look for further updates on the installation of the items online, through emails, and around the Club.

• Special Projects: The Board approved the purchase of a commercial washer and dryer to meet the growing demands of the Club for towel usage as well as new tables for the pool area.

The installation of the washer and dryers will not impact resident usage of the facility. The tables will be delivered prior to the pool opening on May 19. Additionally, new playground equipment will be installed in the area by the fire pit with artificial turf. Look for further updated on the installation of the playground equipment online, through emails, and around the Club.

Transition Committee Members

The Board of Directors appointed several new members to the Transition Committee at the April 12 meeting. The Board’s goal was to find representation of homeowners throughout the community to create a diverse mix of individuals to assist the Board. Existing members are Chuck Walker and Ed Williams. New members are Glenda Powell, Tony Fakonas, and Rob Morrison. The committee may be contacted at transition@mysomersett.com.

Friendly Reminder for Rental Properties If you rent your property and have assigned clubhouse access to your tenants, please make sure to contact the Association when leases are renewed. AGC Deposits Have you received your deposit? The Association has roughly $58,000 sitting on the books for landscape deposits. We are working on cleaning this up and need the help of homeowners—now is the time to find out if you are owed money from the SOA! If you have submitted plans and paid the applicable fees, please contact the office to schedule a final inspection, update us on the status of the work, or notify us that the project has been canceled.

Spring Compliance Reminders • With the unseasonably warm weather we have experienced

this winter, an earlier and more aggressive weed season may be expected. Stopping the spread of noxious weeds throughout the community will be a focus of the Association. Please take steps to ensure that your property is clear of potentially hazardous weeds as early as possible, and that the property is kept clear of weeds throughout the summer and fall.

• We have had many questions about the approved screening for split rail fences in the community, generally with regard to problems with rabbits. The requirements that are in place regarding fencing and fence screening come from the Planned Unit Development (commonly referred to as the PUD). The PUD supersedes the CC&Rs and is the source of many AGC guidelines and CC&R requirements. The PUD allows only for green vinyl-coated wires, sized at 2” x 2 ½”. The vinyl-coated wiring must be attached to

the inside of the split rail fence and reach from the bottom of the fence to the top of the split rail fence, and it cannot cover only the bottom half of the fence. Please ensure that you are abiding by the fencing requirements. Chicken wire is not an approved fence screening.

• It must also be noted that the flag guidelines of the Association only allow for the Nevada state flag and/or the United States flag to be displayed on the property. Unfortunately, this means that small decorative flags placed in front yard landscaping must be removed if they have not been approved by the AGC as a statuary object or are not part of allowed holiday decorations.

• Please ensure that all basketball hoops and play equipment are completely stored from view when not in use. Equipment is not to be kept in driveways overnight.

2012 Meeting Schedule We are notifying all homeowners as to when meetings of the Executive Board of Directors will be held per NRS 116.31083.2, “not less than 10 days before the date of a meeting of the Executive Board.” The following are the scheduled meetings for 2012, including the annual membership meeting and budget ratification. CC&R HIGHLIGHT LANDSCAPING/PARKWAYS/SIDEWALKS Article IV Section 40 Each lot owner is responsible to properly and attractively landscape his/ her lot pursuant to approved landscape plans and all landscaping shall be maintained to harmonize with and sustain the attractiveness of the community. Each lot owner must establish and maintain landscaping on his/her lot to the applicable fire protection district’s requirements for minimum defensible space, and all such landscaping shall be continually maintained. Sidewalks located on lots shall be maintained and repaired by lot owners, including snow and ice removal. For lots which have a parkway strip located on the lot between the sidewalk and the street curb, the parkway shall be landscaped and irrigated by the lot owner, and the Association may require all lot owners on the same street or area to plant and maintain the same type of landscaping in all parkways on lots.

Street Parking Please remember to be a good neighbor by not parking your car in the street for extended periods of time. If you see a car regularly and continuously parked on a public street, contact Reno Direct at 334-4636. For cars parked on private streets, contact the customer care center to report the non-compliance. No parking on private streets is permitted from 2 to 6 am unless a parking pass is granted for no more than 72 hours.

Please Check In Remember to present your membership card at the concierge desk each time you use the facility. Even though the staff may know you by sight, we need to scan your card into the system for tracking, accounting and planning purposes. If you have not had your membership card made, please bring your Nevada driver’s license for identification and we will print your card on the spot. If you’ve lost your card, we will gladly make a replacement card for $5.

RSVP Policy Please remember to RSVP for programs by the deadline listed so we can ensure that enough supplies and staff are available. All event fees are due at time of reservation. Cancellations must be made 48 hours before an event to receive a refund. No refunds will be given for no-shows.

Late Pick-Up Fee The Club will charge a late pick-up fee for any child not picked up within 15 minutes of a program’s end time. Following the 15-minute grace period, a $5 fee will be charged for every 10 minutes your child remains with us.

Guest Fees: $10 adult; $8 junior Members are allowed to bring up to six guests at one time for a maximum of ten visits per guest. Members must accompany guests at all times. Please note that holiday guest rates apply on May 30, July 4 and September 5 at $15 per adult and $12 per junior.

Alcohol Policy Alcoholic beverages may be purchased from the Club. Members and their guests are not allowed to bring their own alcoholic beverages onto the premises, including the pool area and Canyon Nine. No alcoholic beverages will be sold or served to any person not permitted to purchase the same under the laws of the state of Nevada or be sold for off-premises consumption. The Club reserves the right, in its sole and absolute discretion, to refuse service to any member or guest who appears to be intoxicated.

Keeping Your Trees Healthy

Here are some summarized tips from an article on tree care that Leslie Lyles, a Reno arborist, shared with Sierra Canyon.

Keep lawn mowers and weed trimmers away from the trunk: The tree’s vascular system (the cambium) is right under the bark. When bark is cut and/or torn, the cambium is easily damaged, which prevents the tree from getting the nourishment it must have to live.

Keep turf at least 12 inches away from the trunk: Trees simply grow better and faster with no turf at their base. Grass competes with young roots for water and nutrients. Keeping grass away from the trunk also helps avoid accidental damage from weed trimmers and lawn mowers that might get too close.

Don’t let dirt pile against the trunk: If dirt, gravel, mulch, dead leaves, etc., pile up against the trunk, the tree can suffocate. Wet dirt on a trunk rots the bark.

Water trees during winter: If there has been no significant precipitation within three weeks, water your trees. Tree roots actively grow in the winter when the top of the tree is dormant. The water absorbing roots are the tiny, hair-sized roots growing in the top foot or so of the soil. When these roots dry out, they die.

The tree must then expend valuable stored energy to re-grow new roots before it can put on growth in the spring. A healthy root system makes for a healthy tree.

Remove stakes: Most trees do not need to be staked after 12 to 18 months from planting. Be careful not to damage tree branches when removing stakes.

Many people mistakenly believe that stakes are necessary in windy areas.

Actually, trees swaying in the wind are building strength. Leaving stakes on too long can also weaken the tree’s trunk and inhibit proper root growth.

Hint: Prior to removing the stakes, grasp the trunk and shake. The tree should feel well anchored in the soil and you should not be able to see the soil heaving around the base. If the tree fails to root properly, it may be because it has

a girdling root system from being in a pot too long or it didn’t have its burlap or metal root ball-shipping container removed in a proper and/or timely manner. If this has happened, a certified arborist can inspect and offer suggestions.

Pruning: Improper pruning can lead to infection, structural problems and death.

Allow a tree to grow for a few years before its first pruning. A certified arborist trained in structural pruning can identify and correct defects that can lead to branch failure as the tree matures. When a young tree is properly pruned, good branch structure is established and it often needs little or no pruning as it matures.

Safety: Please cut back branches growing over sidewalks and curbs.

Purchase new trees from a quality nursery: Low cost trees purchased from mass-market retailers are often low quality, pot bound and/or structurally inferior.

Healthy, strong trees get their start from expertly nurtured nursery stock.

Avoid planting too deep: After a tree is planted, you should see a widening of the trunk (root flare) above the soil as the trunk transitions into the root zone. When the tree’s root system is too far below the soil surface, even a few inches too deep, the roots are deprived of oxygen and cannot function properly. A deeply planted tree will most likely decline slowly over several years before finally dying.
