In 2007, we opened our recycling plant to lessen the impact of plastic in landfills. Over a decade later, millions of pounds of plastic driplines have been salvaged from farms and incorporated into the production of our landscape driplines through a process perfected by Netafim.
Today, Netafim is still the only industry manufacturer to commit to an end to end cycle of sustainability.

A Letter from the President
W
hat a start to the season! Talk about hitting the ground running! First of all, I would like to start by thanking all of you for your time and support of the Nevada Landscape Association! Our tradeshow and conference was a huge success. I am happy to report that we had 318 attendees! Well exceeding the 125 that were pre-registered. Again thank you all for your support and thank you to all the volunteer speakers. As many of you know, with the help and support of the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension we were able to bring QWEL to Northern Nevada. A big thanks goes out to Dr. Heidi Kratch and Jenn Fisher for all their hard work and dedication on this project. Rick Clark’s vision of bringing QWEL to Northern Nevada has come to fruition. So far this year we have also achieved our 501c3 status. We are working on revising the Nevada landscape association Standards for Northern Nevada along with working towards a more demographic industry testing specific to Nevada. We also are planning a charitable event for our local community, and we’ll announce the details once they’re available. Finally, to wrap up our season, join us for our Nevada Landscape Association golf tournament on Friday August 30th at Lake Ridge Golf Course. Shotgun start will be at 8:30am, hope to see you on the course! Gregg Gehlert PRESIDENT, NEVADA LANDSCAPE ASSOCIATION

When it Comes to Pruning, Timing is Everything. By Holly Bromley, ISA Certified Arborist #WE-5339a Stewardship Horticultural
T
There is a shopping center in Sparks that used to frustrate the heck out of me every year! Come late July … every year … without fail … the landscape crew would take hedge sheers to the Russian Sage just as it was starting to bloom, and whack off all the beautiful blooms. I never could figure out why. The plant doesn’t get that tall, and they were only shaving off 6-8 inches; just enough to get rid of the purple tips. Why on earth would anyone even plant Russian Sage, if not for the blooms?
6
Landscape Nevada
PLANT PRUNING GUIDE Honestly, it’s not the most attractive plant until the purple blossoms appear. This kind of busy-work was not only unnecessary, but the property owner was paying for work that didn’t need to be done and reduced the appeal of the landscaping. When pruning shrubs, timing really is everything. Your landscape crew should be educated enough to know which plants bloom in the spring and which bloom in the fall. Springflowering shrubs need to be pruned after they bloom, not before. Winter pruning of spring bloomers such as lilac, quince, flowering almond, bridal veil spiraea and forsythia removes the flower buds that formed the previous summer, thus destroying their ability to bloom in the spring. Flowering shrubs that bloom in the summer can be pruned in the late fall or winter as the new flush of spring growth will also aid in the development of their blooms. These include plants such as rose of Sharon, butterfly bush, Anthony Waters spiraea, Russian sage and Caryopteris (blue mist spiraea.) But take note of what other features the shrub offers to determine the time of pruning: Caryopteris, for example, has beautiful papery “flowers” that provide winter interest, so leaving them alone until early spring adds beauty to the landscape when all else is dormant. Ornamental grasses also add wonderful winter interest to winter landscapes with their dried seed heads. Again, delaying the pruning till late winter is an asset to the landscape when all else is dormant and lacks interest. Evergreen shrubs such as junipers, mugo pine, photinia and laurel are the most versatile when it comes to pruning. Since they don’t lose their leaves and go dormant, nor do they have a bloom cycle, they can be pruned any time of year. Have your crews delay pruning these until the rush of spring and summer maintenance is over. Doing off-season pruning on these shrubs is a great way to effectively use your limited man power in the busyness of high-season and keep good employees working when much of the other maintenance is done. By understanding the physiology and bloom cycle of the plants within landscapes your company manages, your landscape crews can effectively divide the work load throughout the year, making for more efficient use of their time and resources. Additionally, you’ll be maximizing the beauty of the landscape by respecting the unique qualities of the plants. It’s a win-win situation for the property owner, the landscape and for your business because of the quality of work you’ll be known for.
LATE WINTER Ornamental Grasses: Give beauty to bleak winter landscapes – prune in late winter or early spring.
Summer Bloomers: Butterfly bush Anthony Waters Spiraea Rose of Sharon Russian Sage
Caryopteris (Blue Mist Spiraea) Potentilla Smoke bush
Non-flowering deciduous shrubs: (Technically these do flower, but blooms are insignificant.) Barberry Dogwood Shrub sumac
SPRING Prune spring-bloomers right after flowers fade in the spring. New buds for next year’s bloom will form in the summer. Forsythia Snow Ball bush/viburnum Lilac Rhododendron Quince Scotch Broom Bridal wreath spiraea Mock Orange Flowering Almond Ninebark Bridal Veil Spiraea
ANY TIME OF YEAR Holly Oregon grape Euonymous sp. Yew Burning bush Cotoneaster
Juniper Laurel Photinia Boxwood Pyracantha Nandina (Heavenly bamboo)
Note: You may make copies of this chart to use as a training aid for your landscape crews and to help with scheduling pruning to maximize your crew’s efficiency throughout the year.

WHAT’S THAT HOLE IN THE GROUND?
By Kurt Dyer, Northern Nevada Pest Control Burrowing rodents can cause many problems in landscape areas and next to buildings. For the landscape industry, ongoing damage to irrigation systems can be costly and difficult to resolve. These rodents will also damage new and established vegetation. Some of the most common burrowing rodents that are a major concern are ground squirrels, moles, voles, gophers, chipmunks and marmots.
Identifying the burrow holes of dirt mounds can help to figure out what rodent you are dealing with. Recognizing these damaged areas in the landscape will help to plan a strategy for successful control.

T
his is one of the most important times of the year for irrigators to really show why they are such an important part of the green industry. This is the time where we can really gain a grasp on what is needed on all of our properties before the weather starts getting hot; the value to your client of having an experienced irrigation tech evaluate the condition of the system and offer solutions to remedy issues in uniformity and coverage is now. Spring is the best time to determine these problems and get information back to your clients. This way you are on top of the problems from the beginning of the season, which will show your client how important they are to you! Be sure to communicate with your client and offer the most educated solution to resolve the problems that you are finding. The more educated you or your employees are, the more confidence your client will have in your company. The NLA offers continued education for irrigation and other fields within the green industry, so be sure to reach out and see how you can be in the top of your field! hat a year for our tradeshow and conference! The day was a huge success thanks to our members, vendors, and attendees! Despite “Februburied” closing the pass and preventing some of our highly anticipated Trade Show vendors and guest speaker from attending, this year’s conference went off without a hitch and was attended by more than 350 of our industry peers, leaving standing room only in most tracks (Note to self- get more chairs next year). Looking around and seeing so many “competitors” trading ideas, catching up, learning new things and shaking hands made it clear our quest to make the Nevada Landscape trade show great again was attained. The NLA is helping bring us together, uniting all contractors to make a better Green industry; this year’s trade show and conference was a shining example. Whether you’re new to the business or you’re an experienced vet this year’s conference had lots to offer. The speakers really captivated audiences. We reached a wide range of people. Advanced Irrigation Troubleshooting and Plan Reading with Speaker Gregg Gehlert was a noteworthy course this year. Attendees of Gregg’s course relayed they felt like they can apply the skills every day, with special attention to troubleshooting. “Great refresher course” was some of the feedback. Another noteworthy course was “How to Kill a Tree” with Speaker Holly Bromley. Holly gave attendees a fresh perspective in proper pruning and 10

picking the correct tree from the beginning, also stressing the importance of appropriate water supply. Bret Allen, with Nevada Department of Agriculture, spoke on the importance of new laws and record keeping. Did you know pesticide application records need to be kept for two years? We designed the tracks to be informative for all experience levels- the Manager, the laborer, the person just stopping by to check out the equipment at the convention. The ever popular tradeshow boasted big name vendors such as Cashman, Hunter, Ewing, Western Nevada Supply, and TSW Nursery. NLA tradeshow newcomer Dan Omler of Arbor Pros, LLC reported back he really enjoyed the opportunity to not only check out what the vendors had to offer, but to network and get some face to face time with business associates, old and new. Last but not least- we came together in support of our friend and board of director member Pam Bedard, who is the total definition of strength and courage. Pam is beating cancer as we speak and we were able to not only raise money, but her spirits, as well. A huge thank you to all who donated. What a raffle we had! Let’s keep it going for the Golf Tournament and the Trophy Awards. We are all much better together then we are apart. Remember, even though we work for different companies, we all share the same common goal.
