s we transition inside for our fall and winter exercise, we invite you to come to the Club and check out a fitness class you have yet to try. You never know what might grab your interest! Last Chance Workout is back every third Saturday of each month—it’s an intense two-hour workout with trainers Holly and Gabe. For the little ones, we will be offering Quick Start indoor tennis with our tennis pro John. In December, sign-ups will begin for the Somersett Basketball League. Spots fill up fast, so be sure to reserve yours. And, don’t forget about Adult Open Gym Basketball on Thursday nights from 7–8:30 pm. Come out and enjoy some competitive fun! Must be 18 or older to participate. We already have lots of great activities planned, so don’t forget to check out our events calendar on mysomersett.com to stay updated on everything the Club has to offer this season. Holiday Food Drive Through Saturday, November 19 Benefiting the Food Bank of Northern Nevada Make a difference this season by contributing to the Club’s annual Holiday Food Drive. Please bring non-perishable food items such as peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, canned fruits and vegetables, spaghetti sauce, dry cereal, rice or pasta. Cereal and canned items that serve as a meal, such as soups and stews, are always needed. Donations for the Food Bank will be accepted at the concierge desk.

Monday, November 28 through Monday, December 19 Somersett is inviting residents to show off their holiday spirit with our first Outdoor Light Decorating Contest. There is no cost to enter, and the entire Somersett community is welcome to participate. Prizes will be given for the best decorated home in Somersett and Sierra Canyon. Residences will be judged on originality/creativity, attractiveness and design/theme. To enter, submit a photo of your home to lstemmer@ mysomersett.com. Each photo will be posted on the Club’s website and Facebook page. If you have decorated and want to make sure your house is seen, please include your address in your email. The deadline to submit photos will be Monday, December 19 by 5 pm. Judging will take place on Tuesday, December 20. Have fun making Somersett glow!

It’s easy to participate and your generosity will make such a difference. resident holiday happenings Somersett Sleepover Friday, December 2 to Saturday, December 3 | 6 pm–8 am $25 resident child; $35 non-resident child | Ages 6–12 RSVP by Monday, November 28 6 children minimum; 16 maximum (per group) It’s time for the Somersett Country Club’s Christmas party and The Club at Town Center is offering childcare with a twist this year. We’re hosting two sleepovers here at the Club—two separate groups of boys and girls—and we have an exciting evening of movies, games, food and fun planned. Dinner and dessert will be served as well as breakfast the following morning. Don’t miss out on this overnight adventure! Children are to be picked up by 8 am.
Resident Holiday Open House Friday, December 9 | 5–8 pm $1 per sleigh ride ticket RSVP for crafts by Monday, December 5 It’s a holiday celebration at the Club with jolly old St. Nick! Join Gabriel for this day out with family and friends. We will be snowshoeing at the base of Crystal Peak near Boreal Ski Resort. This is a carpooling event. Lunch will be provided.

Policy Reminders Kids’ Corner will only accept bathroom-independent children 3 to 6 years of age. • For the morning time slots, parents may sign their child up for either 8:30–10:30 am or 10:30 am–12:30 pm Monday through Friday and either 8–10 am or 10 am–12 pm on Saturday. Evening slot is from 5:30–7:30 pm Monday through Thursday. • The room operates on a 6 to 1 ratio, with a maximum of 12 kids allowed at any given time. To accommodate this ratio, the Club requires reservations to be made at least 24 hours in advance to ensure staffing. Each Saturday at 12 pm, reservations will be opened for the upcoming week. • All children must be dropped off in Kids’ Corner within 15 minutes of their reservation time. If the parent has not checked their child in within the 15-minute window, the reservation becomes void and the spot will be opened to a child on the wait list. • No show reservations will result in a $10 fee per child due to the Club. Cancellations must be received by 8 am on the day of the reservation.

Santa’s Reindeer Wednesday, December 14 | 10–11 am $5 per child | RSVP by Monday before 4 child minimum; 12 maximum Join us for a morning dedicated to Santa’s favorite furry friends. We’re going to make reindeer antler hats and mix up some reindeer food to sprinkle on the driveway on Christmas Eve. When craft time is done, we’ll enjoy some reindeer food of our own—crunchy carrot sticks and celery!

Kids’ Club is a FREE club for children ages 7–10! All Kids’ Club members receive a membership card and a quarterly newsletter filled with interactive games, trivia and birthday wishes. The Board of Directors approved the 2012 budget at the October 11 board meeting and the ratification is scheduled for Tuesday, November 15 during the annual member meeting.
Budget Highlights: Assessments remained the same for The Club at Town Center and for the common area and Canyon Nine, which were merged into one budget. Adjustments were made to the private street/gate budget based on the new reserve study and a closer examination of expenses incurred whether behind an active or inactive gate. Surpluses from 2011 were carried over into the 2012 budget to allow for various projects and operational expenses that benefit each cost center. The Club at Town Center will have $225,000 carried forward, the common area $125,000, and private street/gates $10,000. To continue increasing the amenity options available for all residents, the SOA has been working with Somersett Golf and Country Club on a program for community access. Please keep your eyes out for further information and details on the program. The private events program has been restructured, falling under the general common area now as opposed to the Club. Within these changes, the Association is looking to expand its business plan to increase the revenue potential found in private events. The Club has a list of special projects for 2012 that the Board will be selecting from to accommodate the growing usage and demands of the facility. For a list of potential projects and to provide feedback, please visit the SOA page of mysomersett.com. All active gates will undergo camera installation in the first quarter of 2012, weather permitting. We hope this creates an added sense of protection. Holiday Decorations: As we head into the holiday season, please remember that holiday decorations may be installed up to 10 days before a holiday and must be taken down within 10 days after the holiday. For the December holidays, decorations may be installed at Thanksgiving and should be removed by January 31.
Public Street Snow Plowing: Public streets are maintained by the City of Reno. For more information on the street plowing priority listing, visit www.reno.gov or call Reno Direct at 334-4636. Somersett Parkway, Evening Rock Trail, Del Webb Parkway and Somersett Ridge Parkway are all classified as priority one streets. PRIVATE Street Snow Plowing: Private streets maintained by the Association are plowed according to the Board policy of three feet of snow accumulation. For more information on private street plowing, please call 624-9152. During inclement weather, the gates may be placed in a hold open status to allow easy access for snow plows. Street Parking: Please remember to be a good neighbor by not parking your car in the street for extended periods of time. If you see a car regularly and continuously parked on a public street, contact Reno Direct at 334-4636. For cars parked on private streets, contact the customer care center to report the non-compliance. No parking on private streets is permitted from 2 to 6 am unless a parking pass is granted for no more than 72 hours. Somersett Parkway Sidewalk CLOSED: Please remember that the front sidewalk along Somersett Parkway from the entry cottage to the first roundabout is closed. he days of warm summer weather are now behind us and we are redirecting our focus on winterizing our sprinkler systems, buttoning up our BBQs and putting away the gardening tools. Winter is upon us and this means the start of a new year, when we face new challenges and establish new goals and objectives as an association. Thanks to the Budget and Finance Committee, Sierra Canyon is ready for not only 2012 but the future direction of the community. The Budget and Finance Committee recently recommended to the Sierra Canyon Board of Directors the establishment of a Long Range Planning Committee. This committee would address where Sierra Canyon Association should be in three to five years and would create policies to help guide the community in a wellplanned direction. It was recommended that the sub-committee be comprised of two Recreation Committee members, two Budget and Finance Committee members, one member appointed by the Board of Directors, and myself as a non-voting staff advisor. The committee term is one year but may be extended if necessary. The Long Range Planning Committee will not address special purchase requests, which will continue to be reviewed by the Budget and Finance Committee. Instead, this committee will be focusing on researching policies and procedures for consideration of capital improvement proposals. The sub-committee will draft a Sierra Canyon capital improvement request format as follows: seek approval by the Budget and Finance Committee and solicit capital improvement project proposals from the Sierra Canyon Board of Directors and its various committees and homeowners via
community wide emails, survey monkey process and/or other Sierra Canyon means of communication. Included in this process would be public meetings for review and discussion of proposals (design cost, construction cost, funding sources, estimated maintenance costs, etc.) and referring any vetted capital improvement proposal to the Budget and Finance Committee for consideration. The capital improvement proposal reviewed by the Budget and Finance Committee may be sent back to the sub-committee for further concept development made at the Budget and Finance Committee’s discretion and incorporated into the long-range plan. The subcommittee can meet as frequently as necessary but no more than once per month. All capital improvement proposals would require approval by both the Budget and Finance Committee and the Sierra Canyon Board of Directors. What a great way for our community to plan for the future! This transparent process will be explained in more detail as the committee moves forward. Owners are encouraged to attend both Budget and Finance Committee and Long Range Planning Committee meetings. Let me extend a big thank you to the owner volunteers on these important committees who spend countless hours working to ensure that the future of Sierra Canyon is a bright one!

unique local vendors. The Club at Town Center will be hosting free appetizers, as well as a no host cash bar. Don’t miss this chance to shop for Holiday gifts while enjoying food and wine. Travel I-80 to the Robb Drive exit and turn left on Sharlands Avenue. Sharlands turns into Somersett Parkway. Turn into the Town Square at the 2nd roundabout.
