A Letter from the President

W

e had a very good awards banquet this year, everyone who attended had a good time. Hats off to Dan George at Century Landscapes for a job well done and what looks like a year well done.

I was looking at a property last summer that I was considering to put in for an award but it just did not look good enough as we no longer have the budget to make the property look any better than “good enough.� I started to wonder why things are what they are, sure some of it is the economy but how much of it is us?

In construction some companies (and you know who you are), bid project below cost and then make up for it with a blizzard of change orders. Once this happens, an honest contractor cannot get one to save his life.

In maintenance again (you know who you are) the new norm is the low-ball bid. So, to make money you take advantage of your customers with overpriced irrigation repairs, extra work, and snow removal. Now we have a level of distrust between us and the property managers and/or property owners that we never had before. Sometimes I feel like Diogenes looking for another honest landscaper.

You may think that I am right on or way off base. If so, I would like to hear from you.

2. BOOTHS All booths will be provided draping, small name sign (7” X 44”), 6’ draped table, chair and wastebasket. Standard booth is 10’ wide and 8’ deep.

Carpet is required unless the facility is carpeted.

The Grand Sierra is carpeted. Carpet, additional booth furnishings, freight, shipping and decorating requirements may be obtained through the service contractor at an additional charge. Exhibitor packages with additional information regarding the contractor will be sent to the exhibitors prior to set-up.

Exhibits may not exceed 8’ in height in back and 3’ on sides, except with written permission by NLA. Management reserves the right to have any part of an exhibit removed should it be considered illegal, objectionable or unsuitable.

The booth shall be occupied by the exhibitor named on the agreement only. Any assigning or subleasing booth space to another party is not allowed.

3. LEASE AGREEMENT Should exhibitor not occupy leased space prior to show opening management will retain any deposits paid and exhibitor remains liable for any balance due. Any display in booth space not paid for in full by close of show will be placed in storage until contract balance and storage fees are paid in full.

Cancellation must be made in writing to the Nevada Landscape Association, P.O. Box 7431, Reno, NV 89510-7431.

If such cancellation is received 30 days prior to show, the NLA shall be entitled to retain or collect 50% of the exhibitor’s total contract obligation as liquidated damages. No refunds will be made if cancellation notice is received later than 30 days prior to show and the NLA shall be entitled to collect 100% of the exhibitor’s total contract obligation. Any refunds will be paid after the conclusion of the Nevada Landscape Trade Show.

Management shall not be liable for any damages or expenses incurred by exhibitors in the event the show is delayed, interrupted or not held as scheduled.

If the show is not held due to reasons beyond the control of the Management, Management may retain an amount paid by the exhibitors to defray expenses already incurred.

4. SECURITY Management will provide security during non-exhibit hours to avoid loss or damage.

Management accepts no responsibility for lost, stolen or damaged items.

5. LIABILITY The Nevada Landscape Association accepts no liability at any time for loss, damage or injury occurring in or to the exhibit or its occupants.

The exhibitor is responsible entirely for the exhibit space leased to him and shall not damage or mar any part of the building. The exhibitor agrees to reimburse the management for any loss or damage due to the exhibitor’s activities. If the exhibitor desires insurance, he must obtain it.

6. COMPLIANCE All exhibitors must comply with city ordinances and regulations including but not limited to the Fire Marshal and any facility codes.

7. DECISIONS Exhibitor agrees to abide by any decision made by the Management for the good of the show.

Volunteers Plant Trees in Area Parks for Make a Difference Day

O

ver 130 volunteers planted trees at North Valleys Regional Park, Golden Eagle Park and Comstock Park on Saturday October 22nd in honor of Make A Difference Day and Nevada Shade Tree Week. Volunteer groups including the Lions Club, Coral Academy of Science, AT&T Pioneers, Northern Nevada International Center and Damonte Ranch High School cheerleaders came together to help beautify the parks by planting over 100 trees.

AT&T Real Yellow Pages generously donated trees for planting through the annual “Project ReDirectory” Phone Books for Trees, recycling campaign. Each year Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful coordinates the Phone Book recycling program in the Truckee Meadows. Area residents can drop off their phone books at designated area park locations and in return, AT&T donates trees back to the parks. Since 2005 over 1,000 trees have been planted in the Truckee Meadows thanks to this program. Last year the parks collected over 12 tons of phone books to be recycled.

The Phone Book Recycling program will run this year from December 28th 2011 to January 22nd 2012.

“AT&T recognizes the importance of responsible environmental citizenship and we are thrilled to be able to participate in this annual tree planting event” said James Troup, of AT&T Environmental Issues. This Make A Difference Day event is coordinated by Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful with the support of Washoe County Regional Parks and Open Space, City of Reno Parks and Urban Forestry, City of Sparks Parks and Recreation, AT&T Real Yellow Pages and the Nevada Shade Tree Council.

The Clean Up Effort

O

n November 16, 2011, NLA member companies Reno Green Landscaping (Jeremy Johnson, Armando Peciado and Pancho Peciado), Sierra Nevada Landscapes (Efrain Garcia, Manuel Morillo and Martin Perez) and Signature Landscapes (Javier Reyes and Jim Stanhouse) donated their time to the ongoing collaborative effort with Truckee Meadows Community College to maintain Countess Angela Dandini Gardens. Crews pruned, weeded, removed leaves and debris, and applied pre-emergents to specific areas to help control the cheatgrass so prevalent to the region. Materials were donated by Crop Production Services.

The gardens are located between Desert Research Institute and TMCC’s Dandini Campus and are dedicated to the heritage of the Dandini family, combining sustainable planting on a difficult site with incredible views of the Truckee Meadows. According to John Vaccaro, TMCC Grounds Supervisor, “The crews did an awesome job. With the budget and personnel cuts we have encountered over the last few years, it has become very difficult for our staff to maintain the Gardens to the level it deserves. The NLA’s contribution is very much appreciated and has made a huge difference.”

I

n a curious case of reversal, for years the Southern Nevada Water Authority encouraged Las Vegans to rip out their grass, and put in desert landscaping. The desert landscape conversion was started back in 2004. Approximately 5,500

people in the valley have since signed-up for it. It’s saved billions of gallons of water.

But during its last meeting, the Water Authority agreed to set parameters for

property owners to convert back to turf. It requires paying back the entire rebate, plus interest and an administration fee. Some county leaders argue that contradicts conversion efforts, but the agency disagrees.
