A Letter from the President

I

was thinking about life here in Reno in 2001. Construction was at an all-time high, there were shopping centers and subdivisions being constructed. Millions of dollars flowed like water and everyone was making money, margins were fat. We all knew that someday it would all end. And end it did. Some companies figured out the new way of doing business and others did not. It is now 2011, and I feel that we may have hit bottom, again, as I see that slowly things are changing. Will it be like 2001 again? Probably not for a long time, if ever, but we have gotten smarter, leaner and are just doing a better job with our customer’s money. However, the “I must get this job at any cost” bidding is still going on. Our margins are slim, and frankly, I think that the biggest enemy to recovery is ourselves. I urge everyone to think twice about that new bid before it is submitted. Please, just think about adding another 3% and if you get the job, next time make it 5%. Keep on moving that percentage up and you will be making it a better world for everyone in this tough industry. On November 11, we will be having out 21st Annual Trophy Award Dinner and annual meeting. I would love to have you there to have a meet and greet with each and every member and possible member and make the kick-off to 2012 a happy affair. Many profits to you all,

2. BOOTHS All booths will be provided draping, small name sign (7” X 44”), 6’ draped table, chair and wastebasket. Standard booth is 10’ wide and 8’ deep. Carpet is required unless the facility is carpeted. The Grand Sierra is carpeted. Carpet, additional booth furnishings, freight, shipping and decorating requirements may be obtained through the service contractor at an additional charge. Exhibitor packages with additional information regarding the contractor will be sent to the exhibitors prior to set-up. Exhibits may not exceed 8’ in height in back and 3’ on sides, except with written permission by NLA. Management reserves the right to have any part of an exhibit removed should it be considered illegal, objectionable or unsuitable. The booth shall be occupied by the exhibitor named on the agreement only. Any assigning or subleasing booth space to another party is not allowed. 3. LEASE AGREEMENT Should exhibitor not occupy leased space prior to show opening management will retain any deposits paid and exhibitor remains liable for any balance due. Any display in booth space not paid for in full by close of show will be placed in storage until contract balance and storage fees are paid in full. Cancellation must be made in writing to the Nevada Landscape Association, P.O. Box 7431, Reno, NV 89510-7431. If such cancellation is received 30 days prior to show, the NLA shall be entitled to retain or collect 50% of the exhibitor’s total contract obligation as liquidated damages. No refunds will be made if cancellation notice is received later than 30 days prior to show and the NLA shall be entitled to collect 100% of the exhibitor’s total contract obligation. Any refunds will be paid after the conclusion of the Nevada Landscape Trade Show. Management shall not be liable for any damages or expenses incurred by exhibitors in the event the show is delayed, interrupted or not held as scheduled. If the show is not held due to reasons beyond the control of the Management, Management may retain an amount paid by the exhibitors to defray expenses already incurred. 4. SECURITY Management will provide security during non-exhibit hours to avoid loss or damage. Management accepts no responsibility for lost, stolen or damaged items. 5. LIABILITY The Nevada Landscape Association accepts no liability at any time for loss, damage or injury occurring in or to the exhibit or its occupants. The exhibitor is responsible entirely for the exhibit space leased to him and shall not damage or mar any part of the building. The exhibitor agrees to reimburse the management for any loss or damage due to the exhibitor’s activities. If the exhibitor desires insurance, he must obtain it. 6. COMPLIANCE All exhibitors must comply with city ordinances and regulations including but not limited to the Fire Marshal and any facility codes. 7. DECISIONS Exhibitor agrees to abide by any decision made by the Management for the good of the show.

Dissecting the Relationship Between the NLA and Its Members Where’s the Value? By Matt Melarkey

I

get asked with regular frequency “What are the benefits of the NLA to me and/or my company?” I get this question from members, non-members and vendors alike, not to mention having asked it myself. I have struggled with the answer to this question, but I think that I am grasping it more and more every day. There is an actual list of things that the NLA does that was written in another time when the landscape industry was a different animal. It was given to me to try to help mitigate my queries about the value of a landscape organization. Some of this list seemed to make sense; some seemed like trumped-up filler. How was this to be interpreted by a newbie (me) and my entrance into the inner workings of the board of directors? How would this play in the field; in the hands of hard working landscape operators? Here is the biggest question, why is the NLA having to field this question at all? Let’s look at the things that the NLA does that everybody is aware of, events that are planned with the landscaper in mind. There are the old Therein lies the Catch-22; standbys that have been going on for years; the trade show and education the membership doesn’t support tracks, the golf tournament and the trophy awards. We provide insurance services, networking opportunities, marketing, education and public relations. None of this should be news to anyone. But how the NLA does this may not the NLA because the NLA be as well known. I have just recently gained a clearer view of the true NLA world and doesn’t provide apparent value how it functions. I have sat on the golf committee for the last two years and have watched a disturbing trend, the lack of support. This is when my and the NLA cannot provide epiphany struck. The NLA as an organization and the membership, both apparent value because it lacks current, past and future are locked in a horrible Catch-22. The NLA puts these events on to provide the landscape community with outlets for education, camaraderie and exposure with the NLA’s ultimate goal being fundraising. member support. Fundraising income coupled with dues can then be used to support a great deal of industry wide issues and provide a voice at the legislature in Carson City. Therein lies the Catch-22; the membership doesn’t support the NLA because the NLA doesn’t provide apparent value and the NLA cannot provide apparent value because it lacks member support. This is the razors edge.

The NLA needs to catch-up to the industry we are supporting, and in doing so, become more attractive to the members. I believe that as a board we are focused on this.

So what is the solution? The NLA needs to catch-up to the industry we are supporting, and in doing so, become more attractive to the members. I believe that as a board we are focused on this. Members need to stop hiding behind the same old excuses, like “I can’t afford it” or “It’s the same old people running it”. Getting involved or sweat equity cost nothing and new faces provide diversity to the board and membership. There are very few of us that are running the same business we were five years ago, thus the NLA cannot support the industry the same way it did five years ago. This kind of external pressure should provide the impetus to band together and form a united front within the industry and the NLA needs to be at the head; both fighting for and protecting its membership. Currently there is more attention being paid to the relationship between the NLA and its members that to the true issues affecting us in the field. Now how to bring it all home without some cheesy saying that probably exists on a motivational poster underneath a bald eagle perched on top of Mt. Everest. The faster we can all move past the emotional strife and focus on the task at hand, making a better organization, board, membership and industry; the faster we can start making larger positive gains. I believe in the NLA and the core values that it represents. I also believe in the membership. I deal with countless landscapers, and haven’t met a single one that wasn’t concerned about the industry as a whole. I could continue to ponder this paradigm for pages but I think the best course of action for all is to simply get to work to make it better. and a Sustainable Interiorscape Future at Plantscape Industry Expo

H

elping interiorscape companies grow their businesses, Plantscape Industry Expo—Where the interiorscape industry grows, brought plantscapers and interiorscape suppliers from across the US, Canada, and New Zealand, together for three days of networking, educational sessions, and an Exhibitor Showcase featuring the latest products. The convention held by PIA, the Plantscape Industry Alliance, was held Aug. 30–Sept. 1, 2011, in Las Vegas, NV. A highlight of the conference was “The Organic Architect—Building with Plants: A Glimpse at the Future” with Eric Corey Freed, organicARCHITECT. Freed’s message that the time when plants were considered mere accessories to design is over and today’s architects and designers have an incredible opportunity to integrate plants into the design of our living and working spaces, was hailed by attendees as an idea whose time had come. Freed’s exciting presentation focused on what a sustainable and truly green future looks like, one that transforms the plant “accessory” into living architecture and how interiorscape, patioscape, living walls, and green roofs fit in with this vision. Attendees learned how to grow their businesses and develop their team to the next professional level in “The Leader Within You” with Captain Mark Hoog, United Airlines. Hoog’s motivational keynote encouraged attendees to develop their unique set of talents and voice by rediscovering and acting upon their lifelong passions in order to unlock their unique leadership role and style. Hoog touched upon timeless leadership tenets, the role fear plays in success, and making critical conscious decisions. Additional convention topics included, Tablet and IPAD based Sales Presentations, Sales Training, Creating Our Industry’s Future with Conscious Leadership, Urban Rooftop Gardens from Bihar and Back, and Hear It From the Source—Our Clients Speak. Other events offered at the show were the Botanical Design Challenge, the ARIA & CityCenter Horticultural Lecture & Tour, and a PIA Cares: Installation at Salvation Army-Henderson Facility. The winners of the Botanical Design Challenge “Sustainable Design of the Future” were Miko Morita, Personal Plant Service, first place; Sandra Ortiz, Mr. Plant–Las Vegas, second place; and Candice Goldman, Sunborne Nursery third place. The mission of the Plantscape Industry Alliance is to advance the professionalism of interior plantscapers and industry affiliates through quality programs, educational

materials, and networking opportunities.
