Happy Cats

C

at parents are becoming more aware of the dangers of allowing their cats to roam freely outdoors. Some people who find it hard to accept that cats can live happy and fulfilled lives never venturing out of doors compromise by taking their cats for walks. In theory, cat-walking sounds like a fun, effective way for cats to get exercise and safely experience the outdoors. In reality, cat-walking can lead to behavior problems, parasites and to cats becoming startled, slipping out of their harness and escaping. Cats startle easily, becoming frightened at sudden and unexpected sounds such as loud car horns or barking dogs. Frightened cats, when they can’t escape a stressful or threatening situation, sometimes bite or scratch the nearest animal to them. The reactions and responses of other animals, such as dogs who are cat-reactive, can’t be predicted or controlled. Cats can live happy and fulfilled lives indoors, never having the desire to venture outside. Instead of walking your cat, keep her inside and make her environment fun and exciting. Interactive toys, high objects to climb up on and regular play, attention and clicker training will help keep her stimulated and happy. —Submitted by Community Animal Hospital

T

he trees are changing colors and there is a chill in the air that reminds us winter is knocking on the door. With winter on our doorstep, it’s good to know that many homeowners, staff and board members worked hard to successfully increase our snow removal priority from a priority 4 to a priority 3. We are not sure what impact this will have on the 2010–2011 snow season for us from the City of Reno’s snow removal service. We hope at a minimum that this means more attention to the main arterial streets just off of Somersett and Del Webb Parkways within Sierra Canyon. Unfortunately this will not mean that every street within Sierra Canyon will receive snow removal assistance, but in this economy we are happy to take any bit of extra service we can get from the city! Speaking of progress within Sierra Canyon, have you taken notice of the painting projects we have completed around Sierra Canyon? These areas include the outriggers at the Aspen Lodge, the wrought iron fencing at the Aspen Lodge, the front entrance feature on Somersett Parkway, and a new and improved front entrance M-T200 sealant coming into the main entrance of the Aspen Lodge. We have added bird proofing nets onto our parks and north end entrance feature. Have you also noticed the landscaping improvements that include mustard removal in some of the re-vegetation areas, new trees and shrubs around the Aspen Lodge, and drainage improvements along our walking paths within the community? Another continuing plus for homeowners of Sierra Canyon is no assessment increase for 2011. Our Reserves continue to be over 100% funded and Sierra Canyon is very solvent in its financial status! Within next year’s budget we will continue to make sure our association’s assets are protected and we have the ability to continue to enhance our community from landscaping and general maintenance to resident programming and additional amenities. We all work hard from association staff and management company to our board of directors members and volunteers within the community and the results show! Please continue to support and volunteer in all aspects of our great community as we get closer to starting a new great year at Sierra Canyon!!

Somersett can’t afford leaders who gamble with our tax dollars. For eight years Sharon Zadra has been using your tax dollars to play “developer.” Instead of funding services that Brandi considers vital – like staffed fire stations, police, street clearing and sewers – Zadra has been using your money to bankroll loans for one of the richest men in America. Now we are all paying the price with longer public safety response times, icy, snow covered streets, fewer city services and a city burdened with the debt and uncertainty of high-risk financing. It’s time for city government to re-prioritize citizen needs. It’s time for Brandi Anderson.

Reminders for the Fall Season Speed limits. Always an important reminder. The parkway is not a speedway. Please drive the speed limit and watch for pedestrians in the crosswalks. Especially watch for children as they await their school buses. We continue to notice increased presence of the Reno Police Department. So…please—slow down and drive safely throughout the Somersett community. Political signs (Ref. NRS 116.325) Political signs are defined as signs that express support for or opposition to a candidate, political party or ballot questions. Only one political sign per candidate/party/question per property is permitted and is not to exceed 24 inches by 36 inches. Any political sign shall be removed within 10 days following the actual election date.

Winterization. Remember to prepare your irrigation system for the winter. If you are unable to do this yourself, there are many licensed/insured landscaping contractors in the Reno/Sparks area who can assist you.
