Fire Prevention Research on Peavine Mountain

M

any of the fires in Nevada are fueled by Cheatgrass, a non-native grass from Eurasia. Cheatgrass greens up early in the spring and dries out for the hottest parts of the summer turning many of the hills around Reno yellow. Cheatgrass also grows in a continuous patch like a lawn, unlike native vegetation which grows in clumps. This combination of dry and continuous fuels, along with frequent high winds makes for a very high risk of fire. In addition to the danger posed by fire, there is also the added risk of erosion if intense rainfall occurs on steep, burned slopes. Once a site has burned Cheatgrass re-establishes itself quite successfully, usually in higher numbers than before. One of the most powerful tools we have to break this Cheatgrass-fire cycle is our native vegetation. In addition to naturally growing in clumps, they are also mostly perennial, which means that they stay green all summer long and are much less flammable during peak fire season. Washoe County Regional Parks and Open Space has teamed up with the Nevada Department of Agriculture, the USDA Forest Service and the USDA-Agricultural Research Service to develop solutions to the Cheatgrass-fire problem on Peavine Mountain and in other areas around Reno. These solutions include the establishment of fire breaks along existing roads, testing new native seeding technology and developing methods to remove Cheatgrass from existing native perennial grasses and shrubs. If you have questions about this research, please contact Cheryl Surface (csurface@ washoecounty.us) or Chris Morris (christo.morris@ars. usda.gov).

Above: The area on the right side of the photo is still infested with Cheatgrass which forms a continuous dry fuel, while the left side of the photo is free from Cheatgrass and much less likely to burn. Right: A native Lupine blooms in an area where Cheatgrass has been removed. Below: Native vegetation is much less likely to burn, since it stays green during peak fire season.

Who Are These People Who Help My Veterinarian? Veterinary Technicians and Assistants...we wouldn’t be able to do our job if it wasn’t for their, knowledge and love of animals. Licensed Veterinary Technicians are individuals who have graduated from a two-year vet tech program accredited by the AVMA. In Nevada, graduates must take and passed a state board examination in order to obtain official licensure. Vet assistants, on the other hand, have not obtained their Associates degree. Some have gone through academic and clinical training through a high school or college certificate program, but a majority are trained on the job by the veterinarian they work for. Some have obtained degrees or certificates from online vet assistant programs. Job Duties & Responsibilities The duties and responsibilities of vet assistants are less involved compared to those of a fully credentialed vet tech. A vet assistant helps with basic tasks like patient history, restraint, assisting with vaccinations, and exams. Most vet assistants are not involved with more complex procedures like lab sample analysis, radiography, or anesthesia. Although in a progressive hospital there is continual on site training for advancement. These duties are typically reserved for vet techs who have undergone more extensive clinical and academic training. Other tasks commonly performed by veterinary techs instead of assistants are surgical assistance, collecting and preparing lab samples, diagnostic imagery, administering medication, and more. —SUBMITTED BY COMMUNITY ANIMAL HOSPITAL 14

sierra canyon Sierra Canyon Projects

H

ome projects are never ending as you residents know. But consider taking on something like the Aspen Lodge here at Sierra Canyon and making it not only look good but maintaining its excellent condition on a daily basis. As you can imagine, this takes forethought and a lot of hard work! Landscape and Lodge maintenance projects are in full swing and our community is looking great thanks to the extra effort. The Aspen Lodge multi-purpose room was painted in August and repairs of the pool deck will be finished soon along with a number of other housekeeping projects. Our new landscape company, The Groundskeeper, has been working double time to complete a long laundry list of landscape items by the end of summer. As you walk around the community, we hope you will notice the improvements! Weeds are an ongoing maintenance issue this time of year for not only Sierra Canyon common areas but for individual homeowners. Remember to plan ahead and hire a landscape company if you are leaving for the long term.

What about that former employer 401k? IRA? Are they being neglected? See me for an efficient analysis.

Besides weeds, mow strip trees this time of year will show signs of stress due to summer heat. Sierra Canyon Association sends notices from time to time to owners whose mow strip trees may have health issues, offering words of advice from our landscape company’s tree arborist. Please remember this letter is intended to help, not to criticize. The most common issues with the mow strip trees include no tree well established to protect the tree from a mower or weed whacker and having water drip lines as well as lawn irrigation, which leads to overwatering. Working on these important projects will help maintain and enhance everybody’s property values to the high level you expected moving into Somersett and Sierra Canyon by Del Webb in particular.
