Winter Golf Homework

A

s we move into the colder months, what can avid golfers do to keep that golf flame burning? I use the winter months to better my physical condition with a personal and golf-specific program from the Titleist Performance Institute. Reno has a couple of TPI-certified instructors who can perform an evaluation and prescribe a golf-specific program for golfers of all ages and abilities. Visit www.mytpi.com for an interesting and beneficial scope of the golf fitness world. I am also excited to work on my putting this winter with the new Blast Motion 360 Golf Swing and Stroke Analyzer that made its way into the market in 2016. It has received high marks and I am thrilled with the eleven pertinent putting metrics it measures, including developing a 2:1 tempo for all of putts regardless of length. If you’re an avid golfer, try to do something daily that holds your level and gives you a better opportunity to progress when you pick up the game in the spring.

ids Kottage is a Washoe County temporary shelter for children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. “Most, if not all, really, come from honestly horrific circumstances,” said Administrative Director Tim Grafton. “Kids Kottage provides a stable home environment, structure and love.” A group of Somersett, Sierra Canyon and Reno residents, The Wild Whimsical Women, volunteer weekly at Kids Kottage, helping the children in grades first through sixth with tutoring, mentoring and homework. “It’s a blessing on so many levels, doing homework,” said Grafton, who three months ago took over for the retiring Bert Wells. “Few kids like to do homework — it’s nice to have a friendly face to encourage them and keep them on track.” The Kids Kottage has 82 beds for newborns through age 18. It’s a cross between home and a fully operational daycare. There is a nursery, play room, classrooms, activity center, side rooms for art projects, and a gym. Some of the older children help prepare meals in the fully operational kitchen. According to Grafton, the Kids Kottage mission is to normalize a chaotic situation for the youths. The Kids Kottage maintains structure: the children return to their same schools, receive transportation to and from after school activities, such as sports. A Boy Scout Troop meets at the Kids Kottage. Help spread the love with the inaugural Somersett Homeowners Association Kids Kottage book drive. Donations sought by the Kids Kottage children are the Wonder Books, Harry Potter, Tuck Everlasting, and Who Would Win series. Books suitable for ages pre-kindergarten up to age 15 are also welcomed. A volunteer, who choses to remain anonymous, said, “Many of these children have a good background in reading or math — any extra attention will benefit them greatly. The kids were very excited to be able to tell people what books they wanted to read. This makes the books more important to them. They are already asking when they will get them. It’s very exciting.” Keep your eyes open for the book donation barrel at the Somersett Town Center beginning Jan. 1, 2017. If you are interested in volunteering with the Wild Whimsical Women, who support many Reno charities such as the Kids Kottage, veterans outreach and low income senior centers, email Sharon Slattery at xsharonslattery@yahoo.com.

Assessment Reminder

SNOW REMOVAL & STREET SWEEPING

Assessments are due on the first of each month and are overdue if not paid by the 30th of the month. A late fee of $25 will be posted to accounts not paid by the 30th of the month. Accounts 60 days past due will lose clubhouse and/or Canyon Nine privileges. Accounts 75 days past due will be sent to collections.

Snow removal and street sweeping within the sub-associations of the Village and the Vue are the responsibility of the sub-associations. Other private streets within the Association will be snow plowed when there is an accumulation of three inches on the street. Streets will be swept within a reasonable timeframe following the last snowfall to clear the streets of sand and debris. For snow removal and sweeping issues on city-owned streets, contact the city at 334-2099. Homeowners are responsible for maintaining the sidewalks adjacent to their property. The Association will plow the common area pathways/sidewalks along the three major parkways (Somersett, Del Webb and Somersett Ridge) if there is still snow on the walkways within 48 hours after the end of snowfall.

Assessment Payments Submitted Online (via Paylease) Did you know you can pay your monthly assessments online from the FirstService Residential website? Please be aware that payments submitted online go through a third-party payment processing company called Paylease. Payments submitted through Paylease will, and typically do, take up to three business days to be credited to your assessment account. Please keep this information in mind for last-minute assessment payments as payments received after the 30th are subject to a $25 late fee. Paylease does charge a fee for its service, and you can pay a larger fee to have the payment posted within one business day. If you would like information on automatic payments that are processed free of charge, please contact the association and request a ‘surepay’ application. You may also submit payments to the SOA office, via check or money order only.

Rules & Regulations Spotlight HOLIDAY DECORATIONS Holiday decorations may be installed up to ten days before a holiday, and must be taken down within ten days after the holiday, with the exception of the December holidays. December decorations may be installed at Thanksgiving and must be removed by January 31. The Association, Association common areas and commercial buildings are excluded from this provision.

Compliance Information

To report a non-compliance, please email Andrea Bryant at abryant@mysomersett.com or call 787-4500 x310. Please note that while we do investigate and document each complaint received, we cannot disclose the status of anyone’s account. Should a homeowner not respond to or correct a violation, he or she will be summoned to a hearing and could be suspended from the Club and assessed fines. Tom Fitzgerald

I

n 1989, Tom Fitzgerald and his wife JeanAnn, moved from Denver to Reno, relocated their printing company to Sparks and hired 25 new employees. In August of 1991, they moved into a Caughlin Ranch house that would be their home for the next 24 years. For a variety of reasons, in early 2015 Tom and JeanAnn decided it was time to move into a new house. After researching all available options that met their needs, they decided there was only one new place they could call home – Somersett. They moved into their Somersett home in August 2015. After observing the development and growth of Somersett from the perspective of an active homeowner (including four years on the Caughlin Ranch HOA board), Tom decided to learn more about his new neighborhood. In August 2015, he began attending all scheduled Board meetings as well as most Finance Committee meetings. After learning so much about where Somersett has been and what some of its future challenges might be, Tom decided to call on his past experiences on over 40 various Boards and filed to run for the SOA Board. As one of three 2016 elected Board members, Tom is excited to work with other Board members and the SOA professional staff in representing all Somersett homeowners in the best possible manner. When not participating on the various SOA committee and Board assignments, Tom is a mentor with SCORE and Entrepreneur’s Assembly helping new and recent start up businesses overcome the challenges small businesses face. Both Tom and his wife enjoy their decision to make Somersett their new community and look forward to the positive future this area provides.

Ryan Burns

yan is a 5th generation Native Nevadan and has been living with his family in the Somersett community for over ten years. Ryan recently decided to run for the SOA Board position in order to help address community amenities during the continued growth and to also assist in budgeting and community communications. Ryan met his wife Melissa while attending UNR. They have two children, two dogs and a hamster. The family really enjoys living in the community and is active users of the trail systems, gym, tennis courts, golf, and pool facilities. Ryan is a licensed CPA in the State of Nevada and a partner with BlueBird CPAs where he has worked since graduating from UNR in 1998. Ryan’s work with the firm has been focused on providing audit and consulting services to federally recognized tribal governments and their gaming facilities located throughout the United States. Ryan has also volunteered with Junior Achievement to promote financial literacy for grade school children and is also a current member of the Reno-Tahoe Entrepreneurs Organization serving as the Finance Chair for the past two years. In their spare time Ryan and his family enjoy eating pizza, playing Clue, skiing, jeeping, and attending UNR athletic events.
