GOLF TIP:

Winter Workouts Yield Spring Rewards By Stuart Smith—PGA Director of Golf

A

nother winter is upon us, limiting our ability to get out and enjoy the great game of golf. There a few things you can do this season to get ready for spring play.

Improve your fitness Golf is a game of both stability (strength) and mobility (flexibility). Improving these aspects of your fitness will undoubtedly improve your golf game. During a golf swing, muscles resist, flex, stretch, fire, tense and release. For those serious about maintaining and improving, it is imperative to log some workout time over the winter months. Don’t be that golfer who does nothing all winter and then finds it takes the entire season to get back into form. I firmly believe that improving is key to gaining more enjoyment out of the game!

Learn to square the clubface to the golf ball Over the course of the season, the country club staff instructs golfers of all abilities. I think we all would agree that one of the main issues facing beginning and intermediate golfers is the inability to square the clubface to the golf ball with the hands, wrists and forearm rotation. Not being able to do this makes it challenging to keep the club traveling on the proper path to the golf ball, almost always resulting in an improper swing path. This leaves most players slicing (curving to the right for right-handed players) and hitting the ball a shorter distance than is desired. A golfer would be amazed at the increased distance and accuracy when the club squarely meets the ball on the correct path.

Here’s a little drill you can do without a golf club at home: 1) Take your golf stance shoulder width with a slight tilt from the hips. 2) Extend your left arm straight down with your left thumb pointed at a makebelieve golf ball. 3) Reach back with your left arm until it is slightly in front and level with your right hip pocket. 4) Point your left thumb to the sky 5) With moderate speed, transfer your weight, rotate your shoulders, pull your left arm down and point your thumb to the ground. 6) Stop at your anticipated impact spot. 7) Continue the follow-through to hip high by just rotating your chest.

If you need help with your game, country club staff is available to provide superb instruction. Our indoor Short Game Arena allows us to teach year-round. Corey, Rob and Stuart would love to help you enjoy the game more. To set up an appointment, call the golf shop at 787-1800, ext. 2.

Craig Hanson NEW SOA BOARD VICE-PRESIDENT

Retired. I worked for the State of California for 35 years in various capacities. I was a Budget Officer, Project Manager, Program Manager and a Career Executive. My final job was a Deputy Director at the Department of Motor Vehicles.

OCCUPATION:

YEARS IN RENO:

2.5 years

ORIGINALLY FROM:

Born in Minnesota but lived mainly in

California. WHY DID YOU RUN FOR THE BOARD? I ran for the Board because I became disenchanted with the decisions made, the Board’s culture regarding communications and the increased level of aesthetic requirements. The decision to file the lawsuit for the rockery wall and the concomitant large assessment was the tipping point for me. I wanted to become an agent of change for improvement in the decision-making process even though I would be just one vote.

I have extensive budget skills, particularly in the area of approving cost reductions or increases. I worked with very large budgets and was required to live within our needs and to reduce budgets during tough financial times. Budget increases were rare and requests to raise fees were even rarer. I have worked with contracts, lawsuits, personnel issues, regulations, information technology projects, revenue estimates, workload projections, capital outlay projects, legislation construction/analysis and policy discussions at the highest levels of state government. I was also an elected member of a national trucking board, representing the Western states.

WHAT STRENGTHS/SKILLS DO I BRING TO THE BOARD?

FAMILY: I am in a relationship with a steady girlfriend. I have four children and five grandchildren. One daughter and two grandchildren live in Reno. All my other children and grandchildren live in Sacramento. I also have a mini schnauzer named Freya who is extremely demanding.

I am an avid senior softball player and play many tournaments during the year. I am also an avid duck hunter. I hunt quail and doves too. I love going to the movies and am somewhat of a movie buff.

HOBBIES:

SOMETHING PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU:

My nickname is Kegger which I have had for many years. My children even use it on occasion. I got the nickname in college and it stuck. It has nothing to do with my affinity for beer ‌ or does it?

Children Who Love Vegetables... and the Nonprofit Teaching Them To A Somersett family enjoys the benefits of Urban Roots Garden Classrooms

Fresh veggies were one thing, but cooked veggies were quite another for little Cora Kalisvaart. It wasn’t

until she grew them herself at an Urban Roots summer camp that this energetic young lady turned the corner and began eating cooked veggies. For Cora’s mother, Melissa Kalisvaart, adding more veggies into Cora’s diet was a relief. “She has always loved vegetables, but has never cared for them cooked,” Melissa said. “After growing her own at camp, she tried them in a new way when they all cooked them together. She was so excited to bring seeds home and plant them.” The Kalisvaart family is happy to call Somersett home and have enthusiastically adopted Urban Roots, a nonprofit that works hard to change the way kids eat and learn. The organization does this by teaching any topic—math, science, English—through the lens of gardening. They’re well known for taking eager students like Cora and endearing them to the merits of tending to a garden, the fun of creating new projects and the thrill of being outside.

18

Through an in-kind donation of land from Renown Health, Urban Roots operates its Teaching Farm on 1700 E. Second Street in tandem with leased grounds at Rancho San Rafael. Students ages 5 through 15 can participate in spring, summer and fall camps at either the Second Street or Rancho San Rafael locations, or participate in home school sessions, called Farm Camp/School. They also install garden beds at schools in the Washoe County School District, and supplement the education with lesson plans that incorporate tenets of gardening in order to illustrate a variety of topics. The ten-year-old nonprofit is passionate about helping children become food explorers, something they’ve found to be a byproduct when students discover how much fun the growing process can be. “We have an incredible team of educators,” said executive director of Urban Roots, Fayth Ross. “They’re so skilled in engaging children and make learning fun. They can bring a science textbook to life, cement an entomology lesson into young minds through hands on play, or inspire kids to prepare and devour their own culinary creations.” And it seems word of the nonprofit has reached the Somersett neighborhood. The nonprofit hosts several children from the neighborhood. “We heard wonderful things about Urban Roots over the past several years from other families in the community,” said Melissa Kalisvaart. “So when we were looking for fun summer camp options, it was one of the first we enrolled in.” Melissa notes that the focus on fun and educational activities was a selling point for the family, and that the check in and check out procedures (along

with the flexible hours) helped to make life easier. But it was Cora’s eagerness to get into the curriculum that is a lasting takeaway. “Cora had a wonderful time at summer camp getting hands on with the animals and gardening activities,” said Melissa. “She had the chance to get down and dirty (very dirty) every day which thrilled her.” One of the motivators behind Urban Roots’ efforts to bring students back outside is the sharp increase in screen time among children ages five to 16. According to market research firm Childwise, screen time rose from three hours a day in 1995 to six and a half hours a day presently. “So much of what we teach reminds kids that the outdoors is fun,” said Fayth. “They get invested in the fruits of their labor and forget all about their XBox or iPhone. Last summer, one of our kiddo participants said, ‘This is so much better than video games’! We couldn’t agree more.” As the organization continues to make waves in the community, it’s working to finish funding an ambitious container kitchen project. The two story installation would incorporate a full teaching kitchen and offer classes, opening up curriculum so that Urban Roots can teach children how to grow, tend and harvest their food, then immediately teach tasty ways to prepare the food to eat. “It would help us truly teach a farm to table lesson,” said Fayth. And who knows, for Somersett parents like Melissa, it could mean that Cora is ready to eat cooked veggies, and even prepare them for dinner on occasion. Urban Roots is still on the hunt for donations from the general public. Those interested can learn more at www.urgc.org.

A Somersett family’s legacy

20

HeEding Brigham Young’s call, a disastrous journey west, mining for silver and finding a new Nevada home Much has been made of the Donner party’s tragic fate in the Sierra snows in the winter of 1847. About a decade later another group of pioneers also met up with disaster on their journey west, but it’s likely you’ve never heard of the Willie and Martin Handcart Companies. Three Somersett families know the story well, however, because members of the clan are descended from survivors of the trip. Norman Scoggin, who is married to Lee, is the great-great-grandson of Joe Moss, the patriarch of one of the few families from the Martin group lucky enough to survive the journey intact. The Mosses’ story begins in Lancaster County in England, where missionaries converted Joe and Mary and their children Edward, Peter John, Joseph Jr. James to Mormonism and persuaded the family to travel to the Mormons’ “promised land” in Utah. In 1856, the Mosses made their way by boat and train to Iowa, where they joined Willie and Martin brigades and embarked on a cross-country journey pulling handcarts across the plains and mountains to Salt Lake City. The group got a late start, setting out in August instead of the preferred early summer. The pioneers carried their belongings in handcarts because most of them were too poor to afford horses or oxen to pull a wagon. Many were unprepared for the rigors of pushing a loaded cart and when their progress stalled, the food supplies dwindled. James Moss’ daughter recalled her father saying that the starving family unwrapped rawhide binding the handcart wheels, roasted it, and ate it for sustenance. 21

Early snowfall in the mountains further hampered the pioneers’ progress. Eventually, Brigham Young heard of the starving survivors’ plight and sent rescuers and provisions, allowing the struggling pioneers to complete their journey at the end of November. But the aid came too late to avert disaster. About one-sixth of the approximately 1200 members of the companies died from starvation and the challenges of the journey. The Mosses were among the fortunate survivors. The family settled in Utah for a time, but in 1863 they left Utah for good, bound for Carson City. On the way, they heard about a silver strike near Austin, Nevada. They decided to give mining a try and never did make it to Carson City, settling permanently in Austin. The family thrived in Austin and lived there for generations. The Scoggins still have a home there and return often to fish and hunt. Sadly, Joe and Mary’s tale has a tragic footnote. In February 1878, Joe set out to visit his son James, who lived on a mountain about 2 miles away. The older man lost his way in the heavy snow and his body was later found in a ravine. After surviving such an epic journey across the country, it’s ironic that Joe Moss froze to death so close to his beloved new home. Norman and Lee have lived in Somersett for three years, following their sons who had already moved to the community – Bret and wife Sylvia and son Ian, and Coert and wife Kala and children Luke and Coertney. Members of the Scoggin family can be found often at the Club, working out in the Fitness Center or chatting with friends in the Great Room. Joe Moss Sr. was Norman’s great-great-grandfather, which makes Norman’s grandchildren seventh-generation Nevadans. The family treasures their pioneer history, keeping photos, newspaper clippings and a prized memento – a frying pan made of horseshoe nails that the Mosses took with them from England. The heavy cast-iron skillet served double-duty as a cooking utensil and a snow shovel on the trail. The pan is rugged, no-nonsense and tough, much like the family that brought it with them on their epic journey west. Letter from James Moss to Emma Moss King in 1894 This frying pan was made by one of my father’s relations two or three generations back. My father said it was made of horseshoe nails and other scraps of wrought iron all welded together and fashioned on the anvil. It seems to be about a third of an inch thick; being so thick it never burned the cakes or meat that were cooked in it. My father was presented with it in 1865. He and his family of eight started from Liverpool on the 25th of May, 1856, with one thousand other Mormons to come to Utah. I was between 12 and 13 then. We landed in Boston in six weeks. We took the railroad from Boston to Iowa. That was the furthest west of any railroad at that time. We camped there two weeks in Iowa City while they were making the hand carts which we were to pull across the plains to Utah. We started across the state of Iowa, 200 miles to Council Bluffs, and got there about the last of August and rested there for 12 or 15 days. We started from Council Bluffs near the last of September. There were 650 men, women and children in the train. There were six Chicago wagons loaded with flour which was supposed to be one pound a day for each person in the train. In traveling we made 15 to 20 miles a day. Our troubles commenced when the old folks, granddads and grandmas, began to get sore feet and dysentery, then their sons and daughters would take them on their carts and pull them with their loads of bedding and cooking utensils. The hot weather killed these old people. We had two handcarts for our family. My oldest brother and I pulled and my other two older pulled. The other carts I will have to describe. There were two other kinds. One was in the style of a light buggy with tires on, and easy to pull. The other was some wretched objects they put together while we were waiting for them in Iowa City. They were built like a boy’s toy wagon with iron tires, with two thin skeins under and above in the ends of the axle. After we had gone about one or two hundred miles these sheet iron tires broke so the only way we had to keep the tires on we had to wrap rawhide around the two ends of the tires together, which made it with a bump every time the wheel came around to it.
