From the Board By Mark Capalongan, President

With the advent of a new board of directors, we’re excited to start on a new slate of initiatives and improvements for Somersett. So let’s get started! I’m pleased to have so many qualified volunteers to help us improve our oversight and management of major contractors hired by the SOA. A big part of this is to get control over our landscaping and irrigation issues and this winter is the perfect time to get ahead of those challenges. Last summer ended with three lawsuits on the books. Since then your new board has committed best efforts to solving these differences and getting our court cases behind us. Resolution involves compromise so even if we can’t get everything we want going in, we must keep our eye on the big picture of what will best benefit Somersett in terms of economics and practicalities, and therein lies that elusive but achievable win-win solution. That’s a negotiation because a win-win takes two parties. The lawsuit with Preston homes was settled in mediation in October before the new board took office thanks to the former board, including Tom Fitzgerald and Terry Retter. We are looking forward to working with Preston Homes to further the cooperative effort to secure the gates and make the Back Nine a safer place. The other two lawsuits, namely the Rockery Wall Appeal and the SGCC Lawsuit are currently in negotiation and we will be diligent in resolving these as soon as possible and with the best overall result for SOA homeowners. Thank you for your patience as we work to finally get these issues behind us. When that day arrives, good things will happen including better insurance rates, an enhanced image for Somersett, and improved property values. What else are we working on? Among other things, initial efforts will include the following:

• •

A friendlier and more cooperative approach to enforcement. A special-purpose committee to study the assessments and expenditures in the sub-association areas. • The establishment of a homeowner community events committee to plan and implement events as soon as COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. • Simplified procedures at the Aesthetic Guidelines Committee that would allow for streamlined Fast Track approvals of homeowner applications. • Clearer audiovisual equipment for board and committee meetings via teleconference (Zoom). A temporary blanket variance for basketball hoops until COVID-19 is over. Cheers Somersett! Here’s to a brand-new year filled with opportunity for our beautiful community!

Meet Our New Club Manager...

CAMILLE PORTER The Club at Town Center has a new manager, someone who is no stranger to many of you. Camille Porter has been the Club’s Sports Coordinator for the past three years, managing fitness classes, the fitness center, the pools, and everything fitness, sports and wellness-related. She is excited to step into her new role and is confident she will hit the ground running. “This year has been challenging for everyone, but I am hopeful that in 2021 we will be able to bring back more events and programs at the Club at Town Center,’’ she said. “I am looking forward to meeting and building relationships with even more Club members beyond the ones I’ve already gotten to know over the past three years.’’ Camille grew up in Walnut Creek, Calif., and graduated from California State University, Chico, with a degree in Recreation Administration. She was the athletic coordinator at the Boys and Girls Club in North Lake Tahoe before she came to Somersett. In her free time, Camille enjoys photography, camping, hiking, swimming, back-packing, traveling and visiting hot springs all over the area – the more remote, the better! Please stop by Camille’s office on the lower floor to say hello next time you are in the Club! How to contact Camille: Camille.porter@fsresidential.com; 787-4500, ext. 320.

Each resident may book a foursome of players at a rate of $80 per player (in-season) and $50 per player (off-season, November 15-March 1). We also have a $30 nine-hole rate in the offseason. We offer Equity, Mid-Week and Social memberships as well as our new Single Membership, which has been extremely popular. Dues include all cart and range fees. GOLF TIP Rotation in the Golf Swing By Stuart Smith – PGA Director of Golf

We often speak of rotation in the golf swing. Understanding how one’s arms work with the body is imperative to good golf. In the pictures below, notice how the yellow half of the ball rotates to face forward in the backswing (photo #1) and in the next picture, the blue side of the ball is forward through the downswing. During this exercise, I did my best to rotate around a constant posture or a stable axis.

1

2

3

4

5) On the way through the opposite happens and the left arm folds around the torso (photo below). The golf swing is very symmetrical. While doing this drill I tried my best to rotate around my spine with just a little shift of weight side to side.

5

3 + 4) Try this drill standing straight up in a non-golf posture and notice how when you rotate the ball turning the yellow side up that your right arm folds around in your torso.

THE CLUB AT TOWN CENTER REMINDERS The Club at Town Center is open with Board-set guidelines in place to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. These measures conform with county and state mandated restrictions. We are counting on your cooperation to keep everyone safe and healthy.

Due to restricted capacity, Club members may not bring guests to Club facilities or amenities, except for Canyon Nine Golf Course.

Here are highlights of what to expect if you visit the Club: MASKS: Everyone at the Club at Town Center is required to wear a face covering, except for children 9 years old and under and people who cannot wear a face covering due to a medical condition or disability (in this case, face shields are strongly recommended). This requirement extends to all areas in the Club, including the Sports Court, Fitness Center and Aerobics Studio. SOCIAL DISTANCING: Please maintain six-foot social distancing at all times, even in the pools and on the pool decks. City inspectors will be checking, and besides the obvious safety reasons for these measures, we risk violation notices and even getting shut down if we are not in compliance. RESERVE YOUR SPOT: Members need to reserve a time slot to use the fitness area, fitness classes, the Lap Pool and the Tennis Courts. Space is limited. Reservations may be made through the MySomersett app (recommended) or over the phone (787-4500) up to 48 hours in advance. Please be considerate of other residents and only reserve time slots you will actually use! NO GUESTS, PLEASE: Due to restricted capacity, Club members may not bring guests to Club facilities or amenities, except for Canyon Nine Golf Course.

RSVP Policy Please remember to RSVP for programs by the deadline listed so we can ensure that enough supplies and staff are available. All event fees are due at time of reservation. Cancellations must be made 48 hours before an event to receive a refund. No refunds will be given for no-shows. Unless noted, all events are for residents only. If residents choose to bring a guest, event and guest fees apply.

Late Pick-Up Fee The Club will charge a late pick-up fee for any child not picked up within 15 minutes of a program’s end time, including Kids’ Corner. Following the 15-minute grace period, a $5 fee will be charged for every 10 minutes your child remains with us.

Inclement Weather The Club may operate on limited hours in the event of inclement weather. We will do everything we can to open on time and remain open until close. Please call prior to arriving when it is snowing or icy.

It will be up to the parents of those siblings if you would like them to be socially distant from one another while in the care of The Club at Town Center. Children will be required to wash their hands when coming in from the bus, outside and after eating. There will be no sharing of food. Snacks will be provided that are individually packaged or will be served by staff after they have washed their hands and are wearing food-service gloves. There is much to do, so let’s get started. I want to acknowledge the gracious assistance from so many qualified homeowners who will be serving on our committees. This is where the real work gets done and I am thrilled to have so much talent on our team supporting our community. If you’ve stepped forward, please accept my appreciation and thanks. I’m very much looking forward to working with the other members of the board, all of whom are not only gracious volunteers but also very smart people. Let’s all make Somersett the best place to live in Nevada. With that, I’ve been asked to answer a few questions. TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY: I have been married to my wife Sandy since 1982 and am a lucky guy to have her as my partner in our many adventures! We have one son, Maxwell, who is currently serving in Korea with the U.S. Air Force as an instructor for jet fighters. We also have the friendliest dog in the world, a black and white Great Dane named Daisy, who served as the winery greeter and mascot. These days, watch for us on the trails around Somersett (where we always carry a large bag to pick up after her).

Right now, my primary occupation is President and Board Member of the SOA! That is my priority, and I’m fortunate to have the time right now to treat this as a full-time job. This important position deserves that effort. My education and training lie in engineering and I’ve owned and operated high-tech engineering firms for the past 38 years specializing in hardware solutions. The current flagship company was founded in 1969 and is now located in Reno. Although our industry segment has currently been slowed by COVID-19, the firm is strong and self-sufficient. That allows me to focus my efforts here in Somersett. Along the way, we also planted a vineyard and built and operated a commercial winery for 23 years in California which produced estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. We also produced Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Malbec, Zinfandel, Sparkling, and Port wines. I was the winemaker and Sandy handled the tasting room staff, wine club, and events. The wines consistently won Gold Medals at the SF Chronicle Wine Competition and sometimes even garnered “Best of Class” in what is the largest competition in the world for American wines. At first, we owned a winery but as it grew the winery eventually owned us! So, in 2019 we “graduated” from this adventure and sold to a new group who will take it to the next level. Cheers (clink).

WHAT IS YOUR OCCUPATION?

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE HOBBIES? For years I have had a passion for skiing. Not so much snow skiing as waterskiing and the slalom course! I also hold a private pilot’s license with extensive experience in sailplanes. I have marine sailing certifications for catamaran sailing vessels up to 50 tons and still charter offshore when I can. I mentor managers of small businesses and enjoy writing projects in my spare time. Oh, and I still enjoy the complexity and deliciousness of fine wine. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT RENO? I love the desert and our corner of the world is the most beautiful and splendid around. It has four seasons, each offering something stunning and surprising. But what I enjoy the most is the people of Reno and especially Somersett who make an honest effort to be friendly, welcoming, and helpful. Nevada is a “can-do” place, and it’s truly refreshing to both witness and be a part of this.

When they tell you that you never forget something, they say “it’s just like riding a bike.” I’m here to say the same is also true of a unicycle!

Bill O’Donnell NEW SOA BOARD SECRETARY OCCUPATION:

Real Estate Broker

Three years but I have had a home in Incline Village for the last 30 years.

YEARS IN RENO:

ORIGINALLY FROM: I was born in Quincy, Mass., and lived in Las Vegas for 65 years. WHY DID YOU RUN FOR THE BOARD? Somersett is an amazing place to live, and I realized that the community needed to be brought together after protracted lawsuits had become the norm. Also, it seemed that there were instances where kindness and a positive reaction to violations could be a better solution to making our community look even better. WHAT STRENGTHS/SKILLS DO I BRING TO THE BOARD?

I have a long history of service. In 1969 I joined the Navy and flew aircrew in a P2V Neptune Submarine patrol plane. In 1973 I became a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officer. And in 1984 I ran for the Nevada State Assembly. In 1986 I ran for the Senate and served 16 years. I returned to college and received my undergraduate degree in Economics and went on to finish my MBA. Somewhere in there I owned a computer company and wrote accounting software for small businesses. I have a varied background and a well-rounded education, which has allowed me to tackle the toughest and most complicated tasks. When we found Somersett, we decided to build our own home and now we absolutely love our neighbors. So, it was time to give back, again. FAMILY: Wife, Mary; oldest daughter, Dr. Megean Struby; oldest son, Dr. Patrick O’Donnell; youngest daughter, Colleen O’Donnell Schulze; and youngest son, Dr. Kyle O’Donnell. And nine grandchildren.

Making electronic projects, playing guitar, RVing, fishing and working on classic Mustangs.

HOBBIES:

SOMETHING PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU: We flew our airplane to Baton Rouge, La., to rescue a mother and two children after Hurricane Katrina and flew them back to Las Vegas.
