GOLF TIP:
The Low Running Shot
By Stuart Smith—PGA Director of Golf
I
t is common for players to overuse their sand wedge and lob wedge around the greens. A good rule of thumb is this: If the distance your ball lies from the green is less than the distance from the front of the green to the hole, the ideal shot is a low running shot. 1) Select a 7, 8, 9 iron for this shot and hold it the length of your putter 2) Eyes over ball 3) Keep your weight on your lead foot (left for right-handers) 4) Keep your hands ahead positioned over the lead leg 5) Shoulders are level
The stroke is similar to your putt. Equal back and equal through in length, however short game tempo is 2:1. Therefore, your follow-through stroke is twice the speed of your back stroke. The stroke is, in fact, a downward stroke through the ball. It is not a level stroke like your putt, due the difference of hand position and weight distribution at the start. Distance is controlled by length of backstroke. Finally, practice, practice, practice. If you need assistance, we have an excellent team of instructors here at the Country Club ready to help you with your game. Call us at 787-1800, ext. 2.
Do you have a golf question you would like Stuart to answer in a future column? Email him at ssmith@somersett.com.

COMMUNITY PROFILE
Big Brothers
Big Sisters OF NORTHERN NEVADA
18
Little Brother
Riley has never been known as the outgoing one in his class. The seven-year-old is more likely to be found drawing on his own or reading at recess than playing class clown. But one day he had some important news for his Big Brother Anthony: “I made a friend!” Riley had found a classmate, Dante, also hanging out alone on the playground, and struck up a conversation about their shared obsession, Pokemon. “We just talked about things we like, like you and me do,” he told Anthony. “Like friends.” Riley is going over to Dante’s house to hang out this weekend. This little moment is big for Riley, but it’s just one of thousands like it that happen within Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Nevada (BBBSNN) each year. The mentoring program matches professionally screened and trained volunteer adult mentors (Bigs) with economically disadvantaged children living in the northern Nevada area (Littles) for weekly meet-ups. These sessions involve anything from working on homework together in the school lunchroom, to playing catch in the park, to getting manicures at a local salon. And the effects on the children involved are clear. Through simple friendship and support, mentors can defend the potential of these great kids and help Littles reach big goals. Studies show that at-risk children involved with a mentor are more likely to maintain strong relationships throughout adolescence and into adulthood, more likely to avoid risky behaviors such as drugs, alcohol, tobacco and truancy, and more likely to graduate high school and go on to college. They even report higher income and more involvement in their communities later in life. These wins for Nevada’s children are wins for our whole community.
CONTACT:
You too can make a difference in a child’s life. The BBBSNN program has flexible scheduling options and even offers couple’s matches for you and your partner. Enrollment specialists carefully match volunteers with children based on shared interests, goals, and even geographic proximity. You only need to dedicate one hour per week for at least a year—and in return, you receive a new friend whose life you can change. Can you think of any better way to spend an hour? If you’re interested in learning more about becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister, call BBBSNN at 775-3523202, or visit their website at www.bbbsnn.org. If you’re unable to become a Big, there are still many ways to support their life-changing mission. Hosting a clothing drive, inviting the volunteer recruiter to speak to your workplace or social network, setting up a monthly donation, or supporting the upcoming Biggest Little Golf Tournament at Somersett Golf & Country Club on September 23rd are a few. Do you have an idea of how to help? Please give a call or email CEO Derek Beauvais: dbeauvais@bbbsnn.org. Riley and Anthony’s journey together has only just begun, and Anthony can’t wait to see his Little Brother’s potential unfold. “He has big dreams,” he said. “It’s exciting to help him make them come true.”
