Little Tykes Golf Clinic
Wednesday, July 22 & August 26, 5:30–6:30 pm New at the Country Club! Little Tykes golf is one of the best opportunities to get your child involved in a game that will last a lifetime. Somersett Golf & Country Club PGA professionals are proud to donate their time to your little ones! This class is best suited for ages 4 and up. Meet at the golf shop at the Somersett Golf & Country Club and take the shuttle ride with the pros to the driving range. We will exercise, hit some golf balls, enjoy a drink and snack break and finish off with a short game contest. We will do our best to provide clubs; however, providing your own equipment is best. See you there!
June 28: Fourball (Better Ball) July 26: 2 Person Scramble August 30: Chapman Scotch (Hit, Switch, Select and then Alternate) September 13: Conquer the Canyon – Individual Stroke Play 9 am tee times | $20/adults, $15/juniors (under 18) This season, the chase is on for the Somersett Cup! The four events listed above are point events with the champion earning the most cumulative points – just like the PGA Tour! The only difference? The Somersett Cup champion will win a Titleist Scotty Cameron putter instead of ten million dollars. Whether you’re in it to win it or just to have fun, we invite all residents in the community – men, women and juniors – to participate in any or all of our great events. All ability levels are welcome. Events will be scored with the Callaway scoring system, thereby eliminating the need for USGA handicaps so everyone to play. We hope that you will support and enjoy our returning format from 2014. Sign up at The Club at Town Center for all events. A barbecue and daily awards are included in your entry and will follow play.

Tips from the Country Club Stuart Smith – PGA Director of Golf
What is a chip shot?
A
chip shot is a low flying shot that carries less in the air than it rolls out to target. There are many instances on the Canyon Nine in which this shot is more beneficial than a pitch shot. A chip shot should be considered when the distance from the ball to the front edge of the green is less than the front edge of the green to the target. The club of choice for this shot should be a lesser-lofted club than a pitching wedge, such as a 6, 7 or 8 iron. The stroke mechanics are similar to that of a putt with just a couple of minor alterations in the set-up. 1) With your club of choice, hold the same length that you would normally hold your putter. 2) The hold of the club is more in your hands and less in the fingers. The grip of the club will run through the lifeline of both hands, making it much different than a full swing hold. 3) Eyes over the ball – the hold of the club makes this easy. 4) Weight forward and hands positioned ahead, creating a forward shaft lean. 5) Stroke is equal back/equal through, catching the ball on the downward part of the stroke. Maintain positive energy through the ball and toward the target. If you need more assistance, all country club professionals are eager to help you with your game. Schedule us for a private lesson or clinic. The golf shop is fully stocked, so visit us for all of your golf needs. We typically beat Golf Headquarters and online pricing.

The program compiles these results for a ranking that is compared to national averages, and it also provides a number for a body’s fitness age. This information is useful for determining a starting point and making it easy to set goals. It’s also a means of tracking your overall improvement, which boosts motivation and keeps you focused on your training. You See Your Dentist Every Year for a Checkup – Why Not Your Insurance Agent? Insurance – It’s a mandatory expense according to most. You get your bill and you pay it, year after year. Your agent makes a commission every time you pay, but are they earning their commission every year? When was the last time they called you just to say “Thanks for your business” and offer a checkup so you know what you’re paying for every year? Think about it compared to your local dentist. Every six months you make an appointment for a checkup. If they find a problem they fix it. Six months later another postcard comes and it’s time to do it again. You trust your dentist, you refer your friends to him or her. It’s a personal relationship from a local business owner who supports your community. That’s a win-win for everyone. Now think about your insurance company. Is it operated by a local business owner? When was the last time they called you to offer a checkup? Do you know what your current limits are, or even your deductible amounts? Are they involved with local events or does their company just spend millions of dollars every year on TV ads that are meant to entertain you? Personal service and yearly reviews are the things we pride ourselves on at my American Family Insurance Agency. If you’d like more information and a free checkup on your existing insurance please go to my website specifically for Somersett homeowners and residents at www.somersettinsurance.com

See how Danielle Kirby makes it all work on page 20! Board Applications will be available in the September/October Somersett Living Magazine.
Assessments are due on the first of each month and are overdue if not paid by the 30th of the month. A late fee of $25 will be posted to accounts not paid by the 30th of the month. Elections It is that time again. Time to think about elections to the Somersett Board. Two positions will be open this fall. What should you consider when running for the Board? The commitment of time is significant. The board is in essence running a corporation with a significant budget. There are currently over 2,600 homes in the community with a boom in building. When Somersett is completely built, it will include 3500 homes — a small city. Each member of the board is given a position which includes specific tasks and then is asked to sit on two committees (which meet at least once a month) to provide knowledge of board priorities. In addition, the board always has projects which need oversight from at least one board member. The knowledge that there is great reward in serving the beautiful community in which we all live. There is great satisfaction in understanding the operations of Somersett and the long-term plans 18

Danielle Kirby
L
ucille Ball once said, “If you want something done, give it to a busy person.” And busy is Danielle’s middle name. She even admits these days she’s not quite sure how she will make it through the day — there is so much to do — but since there is no alternative, she always does and she does it with grace, commitment and passion. Danielle was born in Southern California in Orange County. Very young, her family moved to South Africa where she attended grade school in Johannesburg. She loved living there and tells her parents even today that she was mad at them for moving back! While there, what she enjoyed most was the slow pace of life, centered on community and family values. After receiving her degree from University San Francisco in Industrial Organizational Psychology, she returned to South Africa to give back to the community she loved so much. She volunteered under her former grade school principal teaching English, Religion and Physical Education in a very poor school. After a year, she returned to the states, continued dating her future husband, Jason and started her career in Human Resources. “When Jason proposed, we married and moved to Incline,” she explains. He was selling real estate and she also went into sales. But Danielle found Incline “too cold and the town really, really small.” So the family moved to Reno in 1999. That was when Jason encouraged her to go into real estate. In 2001, Danielle started selling homes and in 2003, she and Jason started The Kirby Team, the same year they bought their home in Somersett. Over those 12 years, they have seen a housing boom, a recession and now another turn in the industry with low inventory and low interest rates leading to multiple offers and tough negotiations. Life got more and more active in other ways as well. Chance was born in 2007 and Trace in 2013. Her passion for motherhood became paramount, and with it her love for the Somersett community. Her eyes light up when she speaks about the opportunities Somersett presents for raising her sons in “a safe, fun and family-oriented community.” She goes on, “Hey, if we only have an hour, we can head to the pool or the park — and it is all in our backyard.” So why add the Board position to an already busy life? After being approached by a friend who encouraged her to run, she realized that Somersett needed knowledgeable professionals who understand the community. “It was very important to me that this community moved in the right direction — one which the developer envisioned, and is stated at the entrance to Somersett — ‘It’s good to be home,’” she says. The only solution was to get involved and represent the largest part of the community — families. At times it is hard to juggle all the demands, but she is committed to making it work. She is proud to have been a large part of the Somersett Country Club deal which, as most of us know, was a long and arduous process. “That has been one key milestone for this community — making sure the golf course never goes brown or reverts back to the developer.” On top of it all, Danielle is now training for her first triathlon. “I’d be lost without the Town Center,” she says with a smile — “for all it offers our family and community.” Danielle’s passions are similar to when she grew up in South Africa — strong family values, and a caring community in which to raise that family. The slow paced life has just been replaced with a busy and exciting one! 20

Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 9–10 am or 10:10–11:10 am One of our most popular drop-in classes is back for another fun, fit summer! Starting in June, join this invigorating and joint-friendly workout in the lap pool; the entire pool will be utilized during these classes.
