Tips from the Country Club Stuart Smith – PGA Director of Golf
Pre Swing Fundamentals
O
ne of the most daunting shots in the game is the sand shot. Practice these tips to become more proficient out of the sand. 1) The sand wedge is weighted and designed to lift the ball out of the bunker. The first thing to remember in the bunker is that you do not have to help the ball up and out. 2) My best advice when practicing out of the bunker is to draw a box around the ball – about the size of a normal divot – approximately 4” x 6.” The object is to take your swing and splash the sand out of the box. The visual of splashing is intended to encourage a relaxed motion that allows the club to do most of the work. It’s important to allow your wrists to hinge and unhinge. Splashing encourages this. 3) It is imperative that you finish facing the target with your weight on your left foot, rolled up on your right

See you there!
toe. A very common mistake is to finish on your back foot or flat footed. When you try to lift the ball out with just your arms, this is often the result. Remember, a soft splashing of the sand and weight on your lead foot at impact will get the majority of your shots out of the bunker. Practice: 1. 2. 3. 4.

What's the Difference Between Oil Paint and Latex Paint? If you’re unfamiliar with painting jargon, you’re probably wondering what these words really mean. When a painter is recommending latex paint but you’ve heard that oil-based paint is the way to go, here are the differences you should take into consideration.
LATEX PAINT
Latex paint is also known as acrylic paint. In latex paint, the carrier is typically water with glycols or glycol ethers as a solvent.
OIL PAINT
Oil-based paint (also known as alkyd) is less popular today. In oil-based paints, the carrier is a formulation of mineral spirits and petrochemical solvents. PROS OF OIL PAINT: • Hard, durable finish • High viscosity so fewer coats are needed to cover imperfections • Less shrinkage
PROS OF LATEX PAINT: • Doesn’t yellow over time • Better for the environment • Quick drying time • Easy to clean up, just soap and water • Durable • Flexible • Adheres extremely well to exterior surfaces • Resistant to common paint failures like flaking, blistering and peeling
CONS OF OIL PAINT: • Laborious clean up: you’ll need a paint thinner and have to dispose of that responsibly (you can’t just rinse it in the sink!) • It’s thicker, stickier and harder to work with (much less forgiving than latex) • It’s stinky! Oil-based paints have a strong odor • More likely to crack and fade over time
CONS OF LATEX PAINT: • Can sometimes swell the grains of wood, making sanding between coats necessary
WOW Fact: Around 50 years ago, the majority of paint used in residential projects was alkyd (oil) based. Advances in paint technology have shifted this pattern; today, around 80% of paint used for residential painting is latex-based. Elise Bunkowski is the co-owner of WOW 1 DAY PAINTING Reno.

WOW Fact: Latex paint does not contain latex from the rubber plant. The term ‘latex’ in the paint world refers to the resin (binder).

Is it an Itch, or an Allergy?
D
id you know that pets can get allergies, too? Primarily affecting dogs, allergies can develop at any time in their lives. Symptoms appear when everyday substances are identified by the body as allergens. While these allergens are commonly found in the environment, and are normally harmless, a dog with allergies can react quite differently, and even severely. Allergens can be inhaled, ingested or come into contact with skin. As the body tries to address them, skin, digestive and even respiratory issues can arise. Allergies in pets can be caused by an ingredient in pet food, a seemingly harmless element normally found in the environment, or seasonal blooming plants. Dog fur helps prevent a contact allergy from rubbing up against a plant, such as poison ivy or poison oak, but exposed underbellies can be affected. Insect bites can also cause allergic reactions.
USUALLY THE FIRST SIGN OF AN ALLERGY PROBLEM IS SCRATCHING. Dogs typically use their back paws to relieve itching, but may also nip at the trouble spot with their teeth. Other signs are licking, rubbing, and even rolling. Scratching at the ears and digging the muzzle into the ground can also indicate an allergy combined with a possible outer ear infection, resulting in an unwanted cycle of distress. Incessant scratching and licking from allergies can result in “hot spots”, also known as summer sores and moist eczema. These bacteria-infected areas can grow quickly and become quite painful,
requiring immediate attention. When pets show signs of excessive scratching and discomfort, check it out sooner rather than later. Untreated allergic reactions can lead to secondary bacterial and even fungal infection on the skin and in the ears. So when you see your pet scratching, ask yourself, “Is it an itch, or an allergy?”
GOING HIKING? PACK A PET FIRST AID KIT! A well-supplied pet first aid kit includes: bandages, scissors, tweezers, betadine solution, benadryl, antibiotic ointment, styptic powder, saline eye wash and a collapsible water dish. It’s also good to have on hand a thermal blanket, extra towels and latex gloves. Remember, a safe summer is the best summer! Article provided by: Dr. Matt Schmitt, South Reno Veterinary Hospital.

TheOfficeBOSS: Mail-Box Rental
H
ome Office? Security is a new issue for thousands running their own show from home. Not only is the small business owner faced with electronic threats, but the oldfashioned physical threats return when your home address is used as the business contact. The solution? Use a remote address and mail center. Not only do you achieve a level of security and separation, but all the added services offered by your local mail center make a huge improvement in business efficiency and expenses. Examples: 1) Shipping services: Use a mail center that offers all the shipping carriers; pricing between the shippers may be compared and tuned for your particular needs including selecting insurance, tracking, fast or cheap delivery…look for a mail center that can offer you choices. 2) Mail Forwarding: This is a real time saver. Going on vacation? Can’t let the business die? Have the Mail Center forward exactly what you need, and weed-out all the garbage. Saves you time and money! 3) Copy center and Office Supplies: A basic one-stop shop can save you multiple trips…Do your shipping, pick up your mail, get your office supplies, and package up the outbound parcels…all at one location. Finally, back on the topic of security: Rental mail boxes and services offer you a physical address separation from any bad guys attempting to gather information. Also, stop the pile-up of packages at your house or outside your office door, alerting everyone that you are not at home! Using a mail center allows for ALL your packages to be handled at one location, from any shipper. Some sound advice offered by The Office BOSS. RJ Newton
S
omersett welcomes RJ Newton back to the community, this time as the new Sports, Fitness, and Wellness Director. Having worked at The Club at Town Center for three years, he is excited about this new position and has high hopes for the future. A Bachelor student of Political Science and Ethics, Laws, and Politics at the University of Nevada, Reno, RJ was merely seeking part time employment when he first applied as a lifeguard. He quickly found himself wearing many hats however as he fell in love with the community. Serving as a lifeguard, events staff, and even lending a hand to golf hut and concierge desk there’s not much going on at the Club that RJ hasn’t done. He was eventually given an opportunity to get his first taste of management when he became the aquatics supervisor for the summer of 2015. Now, RJ is optimistic that his years of experience at the club will serve Somersett well. He plans to bring his unique insights to fruition in the form of exciting new fitness classes, golf tournaments, and pool activities! His experience has already proven useful as Somersett finds itself in the midst of many changes. His primary goals are to see the club’s fitness facilities expanded, along with expanding the aquatics facilities. He has seen the community grow and is actively working to make the amenities the best they can be! When he isn’t working, the 24-year-old Las Vegas native can be found spending time with his beautiful girlfriend of 4 years, Sami, and his many close friends. He enjoys cheering on the Aces and Wolfpack, and is a regular to the sunny beaches of Tahoe.

Best Response to Volatile Markets? Stay Calm.
O
il prices are down. Interest rates may soon be up. And China’s huge economy has slowed significantly. Together, these factors have contributed to volatile financial markets. As an investor, how should you respond? First, don’t panic. We’ve had volatility before, and the markets are more resilient than you may think. Next, look for opportunities. Now may be a good time to purchase quality stocks, when their price is down. Also, seek more diversification. It’s a good idea to own a mixture of domestic and international stocks, bonds, government securities and other investments. Diversification can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses, but it can blunt the effects of volatility. Finally, review your investment strategy. Unless your goals have changed, there’s no reason to revise your long-term investment plans. Still, it’s always a good idea to review your strategy at least once a year, possibly in consultation with a financial professional. Investing will never be either risk-free or predictable. But by making the right moves, you can relieve some of the stress associated with volatility and help yourself stay on track toward your financial objectives. Investors should understand the risks involved of owning investments, including interest rate risk, credit risk and market risk. The value of investments fluctuates and investors can lose some or all of their principal. Special risks are inherent to international investing, including those related to currency fluctuations and foreign political and economic events.
