From the SOA Board

After 14 months of COVID-19 restrictions, it was exciting and reinvigorating to get together with Somersett friends and family at the Spring Social. This was our inaugural event and the first of many scheduled for this summer. Hat’s off to our new Community Events Committee (more about the committee on page 14) and our Club management who volunteer their time and energy to make this and the upcoming events a success. Keep a sharp eye on your calendar this summer because these events are likely to sell out quickly. The SOA Board has made significant progress in shoring up our landscaping, even as there are some issues remaining. Years of wear has placed our irrigation systems in a poor state of repair and getting all this fixed and upgraded will be a major expenditure over a period of many months. The issues mostly pertain to water on the roadway and are being tackled zone by zone. Residents are encouraged to use the new problem reporting system on the website if you notice a leak or issue. The new system has recently been streamlined for better tracking and reporting directly to our landscape contractor BrightView. Another major effort continues for the Board as we complete our study on the future management of the SOA. There is a comprehensive report on the website that outlines the details and recommendations of this effort and we will be following those recommendations in fully understanding our options before a decision on future management of the SOA. We are confident that whatever path is chosen this effort will result in better management of the association and better services for our homeowners. Visit the website under the section titled “Future Management of the SOA” to stay up to date on this important initiative. The comment we hear most frequently from Somersett homeowners is “I love my neighbors!” That’s a great recommendation for our community and we are proud to have so many friendly and helpful neighbors working together in Somersett. It’s part of what makes this a unique and desirable community. Keep up the good work. The Board is investigating options for connecting neighbors who can assist other neighbors in Somersett that have needs. A part of this effort will also be to improve the assistance that homeowners can receive from their association, to make it easier and more convenient to request services, obtain resolution of any issues, and help us all work together cooperatively. Onward!

Little Tykes Golf Clinic Wednesdays July 14 & August 11 from 5:30–6:30 pm This golf program is designed for small children and it is one of the best opportunities to get your child involved in a game that will last a lifetime. Somersett Golf and Country Club’s PGA professionals are proud to devote their time to your little ones! This class is best suited for ages 3 to 6. Meet at the Golf Shop at 5:30 pm and take the shuttle ride with the pros to the Driving Range. We will exercise, hit some golf balls, enjoy a drink and snack break and finish off with a short-game contest. We will do our best to provide clubs, however, providing your own equipment is best. See you there.

Play the Tom Kite designed Championship Country Club Course Somersett residents have access to playing the Championship Country Club Course six times per year per SOA/Country Club agreement – four times you may schedule a tee time and two times you may play as a guest of a member. Each resident may book up to a foursome of players at our accompanied guest rate of $80 per player. This includes green fee, driving range usage and golf cart. We take tee times for Somersett residents four days in advance at 787-1800, ext. 2.

Driving Range – PLEASE READ Somersett residents have both complimentary and fee-based access to the Country Club’s Driving Range, which is available Tuesday through Sunday. It is closed to all activity on Mondays. In-season (mid-April through October) there is no charge for residents to hit off the matted surfaces. The majority of the time this will be on the north side of the driving range. On rare occasions we will be on mats on the south side and when this happens, you are welcome to utilize that side. Our service attendants will provide shuttle service or you are permitted to walk to what is the back of the driving range. Golf balls will be staged there for you. Let our attendants know your approximate hitting time and they will check on you to shuttle you back.

6

Off-season (November thru mid-April) the north side of the driving range is closed and all play is from the mats on the south side. Our renovation and expansion project of the turf tee on the south side of the driving range is complete. As a Somersett resident, you do have access to the turf tee by paying a $10/person fee in the golf shop prior to your usage. The golf shop will give you a receipt which you MUST give to the range attendant. Access to the putting and chipping area is allowed only by paying the $10/person fee – no exceptions. Juniors MUST be accompanied by an adult. Men, please remember our simple dress code of no denim, no jogging suits, collared golf shirts and caps worn forward at all times. For the ladies, no denim, no jogging suits, no spaghetti-strapped tops, bare midriffs, or short shorts. Proper footwear such as golf shoes or tennis shoes is required.

Learn to Golf – Adult Saturdays July 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 & August 7, 14, 21, 28 11 am–12:30 pm | $15/clinic; RSVP at least 4 days prior to clinic 3 min; 16 max Engage in the game of a lifetime and let our PGA professionals get you ready to play. Building on the success of last year’s Learn to Golf Program, which was very well received, Rob Dugan and the staff will instruct this beginner/intermediate class. Whether you are a former golfer looking to dust off your clubs and brush up on your fundamentals OR someone eager to learn, this is a great program. A typical session includes clinic-style instruction as well as individual assistance. Over the course of each month, we will cover all aspects of the game, including full swing, putting, short game and on-course playing instruction. This program will run through the season with a projected end date of September 18. If participation dictates, we will add an additional 1 pm class on Saturdays. Please sign up with the golf shop staff at least four days prior to clinic time at 787-1800, ext. 2.

GOLF TIP Improving Your Backswing By Stuart Smith – PGA Director of Golf

A

lthough the moment of truth in a golf shot is the impact of the clubface on the ball, a good backswing is critical in setting you up to deliver the clubface efficiently with speed and precision to the ball. Mind you there are a few players who have done well with less-thanperfect backswings – Ray Floyd, Jim Furyk and Matthew Wolf, to name a few. However, these players are hardly in the same category as Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, who have virtually perfect backswings.

What are some elements of a good backswing that you can utilize in your game?

1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6)

The hands, arms and shoulders work together to rotate the club around the body and up in the air. Pressure is light to start and continually increases only as the swing progresses. Allow the wrists to work – they work up and down but never back and forth in the backswing. The backswing should increase/build pressure in the trail leg/foot/glute as well as the lead lat. Jack and Tiger get the club pointed parallel to the target at the top of their swing, allowing for no needed compensations to get the club head back squarely to the ball. The tempo of the swing ideally should be three counts back and one count through. Often this means speeding up the backswing but remember, hands, arms and shoulders ALL must speed up.

Community Events COMMITTEE SPOTLIGHT

Somersett’s Community Events Committee, formed at the end of

February, scored a hit right out of the gate. The first committeeplanned event, the Spring Social in May, attracted over 150 residents who mingled on the patio next to the Club’s pool, enjoying live music from the Bit of Alright trio and food and drink from Peavine Taphouse. The Board’s intent in forming the committee was to supplement activities already planned by Club staff, bringing new events to the community and enhance existing ones. The committee charter states the committee’s goal is to “enhance the concept and feeling of community for Somersett and promote Somersett as an attractive living environment.” A survey about events taken by over 800 residents in March helped the committee focus its efforts on things the community said it wanted most – events with food and live music. Committee members, led by Chair Jenny Williamson and Vice Chair Sandy Capalongan, met weekly for months to plan and launch the events. “Everyone has been working so hard but it’s been fun and worth the effort,’’ said Jenny. “We are really excited about the events are bringing to the community.” The result of the hard work put in by these homeowner volunteers is a lineup of eight new or “enhanced’’ events through the end of 2021, starting with the Spring Social. And the committee is just getting started. Next year the plan is to have a whole year of events for the community to enjoy. All of the committee’s events are open to ALL Somersett residents, including those who live in Sierra Canyon. Up next is the Car Show & Festivities on July 10 (read more on page 5), which is shaping up to be the event of the summer with 80 classic and cool cars, live music, free breakfast, food and drink specials, booths, games and more. Many thanks to Board member Bill O’Donnell who is doing the bulk of the organizing for this event, with help from homeowner Rob Jordan. Save the dates for these upcoming committee-planned events. Look for more details on Somersett.org, in the Somersett Happenings enewsletters, and on the Somersett Facebook page. Monday, July 26: Golf Cart Evening Cruise at the championship course. Food and drinks included. Adults only. Wednesday, August 18: A Wine Tasting at the Club at Town Center featuring Nevada Sunset Winery located right here in Reno. Adults only. Beyond a tree lined parking lot, within Rancho San Rafael Regional Park, an iron gated fence welcomes you to a wondrous nature filled space. The 23 acre Wilbur D. May Arboretum and Botanical Garden is home to over 4,500 plants! While parks are created to be aesthetically pleasing and provide recreational space, arboretums are so much more. They are tree museums filled with living plants that are each catalogued and the focus of arboretums, such as our hidden gem in Reno, is education, research, and conservation (along with a little fun).

Many opportunities are available to enjoy the beauty found within the gates, all while raising awareness of our natural world. Starting with Little Sprouts to Good Nature Walks, there is something for all ages. The newest program, sponsored by local businesses and organizations, is the Gnome Scavenger Hunt! The mischievous ceramic garden gnomes will be hiding around the gardens through August with different gnomes added each month. A map, with clues as to where the gnomes might be hidden within the gardens and instructions on what to do once you have found all the gnomes, is available by going to washoecounty.us/parks/maycenterhome/ arboretum. The rewards for finding all the gnomes are big smiles and a small prize when you turn in the map. As with many beautiful public places, the resources are not available to sustain, maintain, or grow so volunteers and donations are critical to success. The May Arboretum Society is a fundraising arm of the Arboretum and their mission is to promote community support by hosting entertaining events such as the Dragonlights Festival in 2018 and educational programs that foster greater awareness, understanding and appreciation of the role of plants in the high desert and mountain bioregions. Please consider becoming a member of the Society to support this beautiful green space in Reno and in addition, you will receive many perks including discounts at local nurseries.

Activity Programs • Little Sprouts – Ages 2 to 5 • Weekend Nature Walks & Jr. Naturalist Guide – Ages 10 & under • Naturalist Guide – Ages 11 & over; complete with Wilbur’s Naturalist Patch! • Teen Citizen Scientists – Ages 13 & older using the iNaturalist App • Good Nature Walks – Ages 50+

Stuart Smith, second from left, with his sons Parker, on left, Jordan, and wife Cecile at Kiawah.

Stuart Smith PGA Director of Golf at Somersett Golf & Country Club

Somersett resident Stuart Smith, Director of Golf at Somersett Golf and Country Club, played in both the PGA Championship OPEN division and the CLUB PRO/SENIOR division in the same year – a nearly unheard-of feat! And overall, it was Stuart’s 10th PGA event. This is an amazing achievement for our local country club pro. We asked him to tell us about his experience at the two championships, what motivates him, and which is his favorite golf course of all time.

20

PLEASE GIVE US SOME HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE TWO CHAMPIONSHIPS YOU JUST PLAYED: Week 1: PGA Championship – Kiawah Island, South Carolina First, I was just so thrilled to have qualified for my third PGA Championship. I last qualified in 2013 and before that in 2011. To qualify, a golfer must finish in the top 20 at the National Championship where 312 players from across the country meet and play a 72hole event. It was an honor to have the opportunity to play in the National Championship as only five players from Northern California and Reno made it there this year. The ages vary from 22–65, and as you get older it gets tougher and tougher. The PGA Championship is as big as it gets, being one of the four major championships for the best players in the world. The biggest names you watch every week on the PGA Tour are there as well as their entourage of coaches, managers, trainers, etc. The golf course was a monster – the longest course in PGA Championship history at 7,860 yards. (Somersett from the longest tees is 7,252 yards). I had practice rounds with Sam Horsfield, Sergio Garcia (one hole), Victor Perez, Matt Fitzpatrick, and a few of the club pros. The first two days of the event I played with Emiliano Grillo and Jason Scrivener, fantastic guys and wonderful players. They went to finish 23rd and 42nd in the event. My biggest highlight on the course was an impossible up-

and-down par on the difficult 17th hole in the second round. A poor 3 wood to the green on the 238-yard par three left me with a 52-yard bunker shot to a green surrounded by water. I hit a great recovery shot to 19 feet and made the putt for par, much to the gallery’s approval – high fives and applause. Although my week of golf ended early, I was still able to practice a little at the course and we spectated on Saturday. It was great to be inside the ropes and have the luxuries of a Cadillac Escalade courtesy car, contestant and family dining, and all access. Another highlight was traveling with my family and friends. On Sunday, we watched Phil win on our flight to Tulsa for Week 2. Week 2: Senior PGA Championship – Southern Hills Country Club, Oklahoma This was my sixth Senior PGA Championship, however, I have qualified for 7 – last year’s in Michigan was canceled due to COVID-19. This is a fun week and I have been competitive in prior years. I have some old college teammates that play as well as some friends from days gone by when I pursued the tour. Again, having my family with me for this one was a highlight. Southern Hills was played at 7,000 yards – so much more doable for me. Southern Hills has hosted many great championships over the years so the course itself was a highlight. I was able to play a few holes with Retief Goosen who won the 2001 U.S. Open there. I also played with longtime friend Scott Dunlap the day before the event in what we call our annual practice round together. The first round of the event was interrupted halfway through with rain and tornado warnings. That made for a long second day of the event as we played 27 holes. If there was a highlight golf-wise, it was my start in the second round where I birdied three of the first four holes getting myself back into contention, unfortunately, only to have it slip away and then some through the middle of the round. Although a great week in Tulsa the golf outcome was disappointing. That’s the game we both love and hate. Two weeks in a row can take the energy out of you. BOTH OF YOUR SONS SERVED AS YOUR CADDY FOR THESE CHAMPIONSHIPS. ARE THEY ALSO GREAT PLAYERS? DO THEY GIVE YOU GOOD ADVICE ON THE COURSE? It was fantastic to have my sons caddy the past two weeks. Before qualifying for the PGA Championship, Parker, 20, was going to caddy in the Senior. Plans changed when I made it to the “big one.” Jordan, 24, caddied for me in my last PGA Championship. It is really cool to now say that each of them caddied in a PGA Championship. Jordan then took the bag in the Senior. Jordan was on the bag in 2018 when I led the Senior PGA after the first round. They are both great young men and I love having them with me out on the course. I

don’t lean on them for advice. Although they both can play golf, their passions lie in other areas which is fine with me. WHEN DID YOU START PLAYING GOLF? I started playing golf at 3 years old, hitting balls for fun over the backyard fence in Los Angeles. My mom and dad were avid golfers. WHAT “HOOKED YOU” ON THE GAME? Like most players, just the thrill of that perfect shot or perfect putt. Growing up as an only child and living on a golf course I could just go out and play by myself. DID YOU PLAY IN COLLEGE? I played golf at UCLA from 1979– 1984. WHEN YOU WERE YOUNGER, DID YOU PLAY ON THE PRO TOUR? I pursued the PGA Tour from 1985–1993. I played a variety of “minor league” tours with moderate success but never attained my PGA tour card. HOW MANY EVENTS DO YOU COMPETE IN ANNUALLY NOW? I am always hopeful to have two big national events per year. Occasionally I have qualified for the Barracuda. I play approximately 12 local events per year with the majority of those being single-day events. WAS QUALIFYING FOR YOUR 10TH PGA EVENT SPECIAL TO YOU? Yes, as I would have never dreamed of 10 but just kept ticking them off almost yearly for the past 10 years. Ten is a milestone but I think I have a couple more in me. :-) Hopefully, Senior PGAs as the youngsters hit it too far these days! WE HEAR YOU’RE A FIERCE COMPETITOR. WHERE DID DRIVE THAT COME FROM? I love to compete and I love to play well in competition. Golf is a game where you are playing against the golf course and it is gratifying to beat par. Preparation leads to performance so enjoy the process – being ready physically, mentally and fundamentally. WHAT’S THE MOST FAMOUS PLAYER YOU’VE EVER BEEN PAIRED WITH IN A TOURNAMENT? Ernie Els and Nick Price, John Daly, Colin Montgomerie to name a few. WHAT WAS YOUR GREATEST SHOT EVER? At my age, it would have to be the next one that makes me smile. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE COURSE OF ALL TIME? It never gets better than Pebble Beach – the site where I played my first PGA Tour Event in 2005. 21

Gallery Alynn DELISLE OCCUPATION: I took early retirement and moved to Reno from the Bay Area about five years ago. Upon arriving, I joined a group that was working at the UNR vineyard and making wine. It was there that I met Mike Steedman and we decided it would be a good idea to open a winery in Reno. In 2015, the Nevada law changed to allow wineries in counties with over 100,000 population, so Mike and I opened Nevada Sunset Winery located at 415 E. 4th St. in 2016. We are the co-owners and co-winemakers and also manage a couple of vineyards in Nevada as well as buy grapes in El Dorado, Amador and Lodi in California. ORIGINALLY FROM: Born in Los Angeles, raised in Alabama, college in Arizona, moved to the Bay Area – now Reno. WHY SOMERSETT? I was originally looking to move to Tahoe, then fell in love with Reno and Somersett. I love the people, the activities, the neighborhoods, the views and that it’s close to Truckee as well as downtown Reno. GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT: Other than my two great kids and career in the Bay Area, I would have to say learning how to work in vineyards, make wine and open a fun winery. FAVORITE ACTIVITIES: Gardening, hiking, traveling, making and enjoying wine … and I love going to all the breweries in town, too. SOMETHING PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU: I was raised in the South, so I’m a big Alabama Crimson Tide fan.

Somersett Owners Association 2021 Meeting Schedule Any changes to the meeting dates will be updated online on the SOA Board & Committees Meeting Calendar on somersett.org. Executive sessions and Aesthetic Guidelines Committee meetings are not open to residents other than those who are on the agenda. Communications, Facilities, Events, West Park Garden and Finance committee meetings are open to all owners and are held at The Club at Town Center. Meetings of the Board of Directors are also open to all owners.

Meeting Agendas & Minutes Agendas for Board of Directors’ meetings will be posted online at somersett.org at least 10 days prior to the scheduled meeting. Final minutes will be posted once they have been approved at the next scheduled meeting. For a draft copy of minutes, please submit your request to soa@somerett.org.
