GOLF TIP:
Brush Up on Pre-Swing Fundamentals
By Stuart Smith—PGA Director of Golf
A
s we get excited about the new golf season, the best thing we can do as players is to refresh our memory of pre-swing fundamentals, which include hold of the club, stance, posture, hand position and ball position. You will increase your chances of improving this season if these fundamentals are up to speed. Improving leads to enjoying. Simply said, the hold of the club for a right-hander is as follows: 1) Hold the club in last three fingers of your left hand. 2) Place the heel pad of your left hand on the top of the club. 3) Lightly apply your thumb and forefinger with the “V” that they form pointing to your right cheek to your right shoulder. 4) Place your right middle two fingers underneath your left index finger.
6) Lightly apply your thumb and forefinger with the “V” that they form pointing to your right cheek and right shoulder. 7) Clubface should be aimed at your target. It is common that when getting into a golf posture we simply droop our shoulders and bow down to the ball. It is important to understand that good posture starts with bending at the hips while keeping the chest fairly tall. The simplest of golf swings is performed around a flat back/straight spine. Make sure you keep ball position for your higher lofted clubs in the center while progressively moving the ball forward as the clubs get longer. A good rule of thumb is that your 5 iron will be approximately at the ¼ mark while the driver will be just inside your left heel. NEED HELP? Our professional staff is anxious to get you on your way to better golf. You won’t find a more experienced teaching crew in all of Reno. Give us a call at 787-1800.
5) House your left thumb in between the two pads of your right hand.

COMMUNITY PROFILE
Wildlife in Somersett
comes with many advantages and challenges. Seeing wildlife is a wonderful experience, but sometimes nature can get a bit too personal. In Somersett, many critters, including, coyotes, bobcats, raptors and deer, are a regular occurrence. Even an occasional mountain lion or bear has been known to make an appearance. How is one supposed to handle all of these interactions?
Coyotes
By Jessica Heitt, Urban Wildlife Educator Nevada Department of Wildlife
18
The ubiquitous coyote, found throughout North America exists both solitarily or as a part of a family group. Within the family group, there is an alpha male and female, who mate for life and are the only ones to reproduce. The rest of the group is extended family or older siblings. Coyotes tend to hunt alone, or in pairs, but defend territories as a group. With many different types of vocalizations, coyotes communicate for territorial reasons and for conversing among family members. A common myth is that coyotes howl to celebrate a kill, but in the competitive world of surviving in the wild, animals do not advertise their food sources. Coyotes are omnivorous, preferring small mammals like rabbits, mice and voles, but will also eat seeds, or fruits and vegetables, seasonally.
Despite being the iconic desert mammal, coyotes can live just about anywhere inhabiting every type of landscape from mountains to deserts, and even islands due to their excellent swimming abilities. So it shouldn’t be a surprise to find them in our neighborhoods too. In fact, with the ability to jump a 6-foot fence, a coyote in a yard is not an uncommon occurrence. To prevent this, residents should remove all sources of food and water that may attract coyotes. Whenever you see a coyote in a neighborhood, attempt to scare it off. This prevents coyotes from becoming too comfortable around humans. Be sure to teach kids how to interact with coyotes, and take proper precautions to keep pets safe. Always walk dogs on a leash, and do not leave small pets unattended outside.
Bobcats Despite being similar in size and diet to coyotes, bobcats tend to be more elusive. However, these creatures are becoming more and more common in urban areas, and are a common sight in Somersett. Bobcats still do not prefer to interact with humans, so activity is mostly restricted to nighttime. They are easily identified by their short “bobbed tail and black tufts at the tips of their ears and they are about twice the size of a typical domestic cat.
In general, bobcats are not much of a threat to humans. They can, however, prey on small domestic pets on occasion.
PAUL W. ROGERS
Living close to nature
They tend to be solitary, unless a female is with kittens. Like a coyote, bobcats prefer small mammals like rabbits, and will even eat reptiles and birds. Unlike a coyote, bobcats are strictly carnivorous and do not eat plant foods at all. Bobcats and coyotes keep from competing with each other by dividing territories; coyotes do better in the open desert, and bobcats prefer hillsides covered with trees or shrubs. In general, bobcats are not much of a threat to humans. They can, however, prey on small domestic pets on occasion. Supervising your pets, and keeping them leashed while hiking or walking is the best way to prevent this. Trimming back dense vegetation in your yard will also eliminate hiding places for bobcats and the prey species that attract them. If you should see a bobcat, appear as large as possible, and slowly back away. Never run from a bobcat or any other predator, this triggers their instinct to chase.
Red-tailed hawks Another iconic desert feature is the cry of the red-tailed hawk. Hawks belong to the group of birds known as raptors or birds of prey. Raptors are predatory birds that include everything from a kestrel, which stands 13 inches tall, to a golden eagle, which stands 3 feet tall. All raptors have exceptional eyesight; up to eight times better than a human. Excellent eyesight comes with enormous eyes; if our eyes were the same size as raptors in proportion to our skull they would be as big as oranges! In Nevada we have several species of raptors including hawks, eagles, owls and falcons, many of which have adapted quite well to living in urban areas. In fact, Cooper’s hawks, which hunt other smaller birds, tend to hang out at backyard bird feeders—a reminder that you can’t pick and choose what animals you’re feeding. In rare situations, a raptor may look to small domestic pets as a source of food. Keeping small pets inside or in fully-enclosed dog runs is the best way to keep your pets safe.
Wildlife in Somersett
All raptors have exceptional eyesight; up to eight times better than a human.
Deer Mule deer, named for their large mule-like ears, are the only species of deer found throughout Nevada. Most populations are migratory, coming to lower elevations in search of food during winter, where sagebrush and bitterbrush still have green leaves. Somersett is a great winter habitat for mule deer. After the fall migration, male mule deer go through the “rut” or their mating period. The rut peaks in November through December; males have heightened levels of testosterone and increased aggression at this time. Using their antlers, they spar with one another, all in an effort to gain the affection of the females. In the spring, males lose their antlers entirely, and spend the summer growing new ones.
19
Wildlife in Somersett
During the early summer you may encounter fawns while out hiking. A fawn by itself does not mean it’s in distress. Female deer will leave their young for hours while they forage. Fawns are born with spots for camouflage, and are practically scentless. This coupled with their instinct to lie still in the bushes makes them practically invisible to predators. Human interference can put them at risk. Be especially sure to keep dogs away from fawns, as its mother is likely close by and can be particularly defensive of her fawn. Deer can also present a driving hazard. It is important to be aware deer are in the area, especially during the winter, and make sure to slow down at dawn and dusk when deer are the most active. Deer will most likely wander through your streets and yards. Be aware that the plants you choose to put in your yard may attract deer. Some plants, like daffodils, zinnias and peonies, are more deer resistant than others.
Mountain lions Mountain lion, puma, cougar or catamount; this cat of many names is found anywhere you find deer in Nevada, including on occasion, Somersett. Mountain lions are obligate carnivores, eating mostly mule deer but they take advantage of whatever food source they happen to find. Weighing anywhere from 65 to 220 pounds, and up to eight feet long, they are the largest species of cat in Nevada. Solitary and secretive, these felines are very rarely spotted. Roughly 90 percent of mountain lion sightings reported to the Nevada Department of Wildlife turn out to be another animal altogether. Mountain lions have massive hunting ranges, typically up to 100 square miles, so if they are seen one day, they are likely long gone by the next. Living with mountain lions is similar to living with other predators: keep your dogs leashed, make lots of noise when hiking, and do not bike or jog alone. If you see a mountain lion, appear as large as possible and back away slowly, do not run. If you are attacked, fight back. However, you are statistically more likely to be struck by lightning than attacked by a mountain lion.
Black bears Black bears have wandered into Somersett – including a spate of sightings last fall – usually on the hunt for food. Black bears are omnivorous, with roughly 85 percent of their diet being plants. They have an incredible sense of smell, with the ability to smell food from up to 10 miles away. To prepare for hibernation in the fall, bears go through hyperphagia, a state in which their full-time job is to eat and get as fat as possible. During this time a bear can eat up to 20,000 calories a day, which is the equivalent of 66 cheeseburgers! After bears have obtained an adequate fat layer, they will find a den for winter. Many factors trigger hibernation including: daylight, food availability, and weather. On the other hand, if food is available, or the winter is mild, they may not hibernate at all. Concerns we see with black bears in urban areas come from them accessing human sources of food such as garbage, fruit trees or bird feeders. To prevent these issues, pick ripened fruit as soon as possible, bring bird feeders inside at night, and make sure pets and hobby animals such as chickens or rabbits are secured with electric fencing. If you should find a bear in your yard, scare it off by banging pots and pans, or shouting. Report sightings to our bear hotline at 775-688-2327. While hiking, make lots of noise so as to not surprise a bear. If you see one, appear as large as possible, attempt to scare it away, and back away slowly, do not run. Bears can reach running speeds of up to 30 miles per hour. With its open spaces, mountain views and proximity to wilderness, Somersett provides a beautiful place to live, for humans and wildlife alike. Enjoy the experience you have with these animals, and remember that a little preparation can go a long way in preventing conflicts.

Village Vignettes:
The Village at Somersett Town Center Proposed Parking Rules The ongoing issue with improperly parked vehicles has spurred the Board to explore adopting a new system of enforcement. Under this arrangement, all residents would be required to register their vehicles (make/model and license plate) with management. Residents would then receive a sticker to place in the rear window of their autos, and parcel owners would get two “guest passes” which would go on the front window or dashboard. Any vehicle without a proper pass would then be subject to immediate towing. A 60-day adoption period has been proposed during which owners/ residents must register their vehicles, gate codes would be reset and new ones provided. This proposed new rule will be presented for action at the 6 pm April 17 Board meeting in the Village Clubhouse. Comments regarding this proposed measure may be sent via email to Associa or to the board via the Townsq website.
Garage Use On a related parking issue, Village CC&Rs state that garages may not be used entirely as storage space, and must be clear enough to park at least one vehicle inside. Your compliance with this issue will help relieve parking congestion in our community.
Standing Committee Meetings SAFETY Wednesday, March 20, at 6 pm WELCOME/COMMUNICATIONS Wednesday, March 20 at 7:30 pm In the Village Clubhouse We will follow up the initial meetings in February of both the Safety and Welcome/Communications committees with sessions on March 20. All residents are welcome to attend, participate, and serve on these vital committees. The Board plans to give these standing committees the power to promulgate rules, activities, and salutary actions benefiting the community. Whether you have a brilliant suggestion, a minor nuisance, or a major grievance, regular committee meetings give owners a full and proper airing of all matters related to living in the Village. The Aesthetic/ Landscape Committee has met several times already and has devised a revitalization regimen which was fully approved and funded by the Board.

MEET YOUR NEW SOA BOARD TREASURER
Joe Strout OCCUPATION: Retired chief financial officer, Board member and trustee. YEARS IN RENO: My wife and I have owned our home in Somersett for over five years. We spent long weekends here almost every other month or so while living in St. Louis for the first few years. We became Nevada residents in 2017 and moved to Somersett permanently with my wife’s retirement shortly thereafter. ORIGINALLY FROM: I am from New England. I was born in Maine, grew up in New Hampshire and attended the University of Miami for undergrad and grad school. WHY SOMERSETT? Somersett and the Reno/Tahoe surrounding area are a blend of where I grew up in New England—mountains, the most beautiful lake in the world, snow, skiing, golf and a community that welcomes families, neighbors and visitors alike. Somersett could not be a better place for my wife and me to retire. It also gives our children a great place to come and enjoy with us. WHY DID YOU RUN FOR THE BOARD? Since the Treasurer was not running for re-election, I was asked to consider running for the Board. With my professional background in finance/business and my contributions to the SOA Finance Committee, I felt that if I was elected, I could be a valuable member of the Board as the Treasurer.
22
WHAT STRENGTHS/SKILLS DO YOU BRING TO THE BOARD? Having served on both the boards of corporations and service organizations that were of special interest to me and with my many years in finance and business, I believe I can blend these skills to help guide and serve the SOA and the community. FAMILY: My wife and I have a son and a daughter who are both married to fabulous spouses. We are the proud grandparents of a grandson to our son and a granddaughter to our daughter who is also expecting a second little girl in April. HOBBIES: Having always been athletic and living in one of the most beautiful places in the world, I enjoy almost anything outdoors, from playing golf at Somersett Golf and Country Club to skiing, which is a love from my childhood in New England, to almost anything that lets us take in the breathtaking surroundings in the High Sierras or around Lake Tahoe. SOMETHING PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU: Having a daughter that captained the Field Hockey team for Dartmouth College and played in the U.S. Olympic program, I actually understand the rules and game of Field Hockey and spent time on the U.S. Olympic Committees’ Field Hockey Board of Directors. I would not want to be a referee, however, but having attended hundreds of matches and practices I at least understand the game my daughter played almost daily for over eight years.

MEET YOUR NEW SOA BOARD SECRETARY
Terry Retter
OCCUPATION: Mostly retired, however, I am still working with one start-up company that is using artificial intelligence tools to support content-marketing activities. This evolved out of my consulting business which was closed a few years ago because my customers decided they did not need to pay me for work done. YEARS IN RENO: We bought in Somersett in 2003 and relocated in 2005 while I was still working at PriceWaterhouseCoopers. ORIGINALLY FROM: I’m not sure I have an “originally” as we moved a lot when I was young. We settled in Portland, Oregon, for high school. Following graduation, I moved to California to attend Stanford. Following Stanford, I lived at the beach in southern California for about 20 years and then to the peninsula in the Bay Area for a bit over 20 years moving here from Redwood Shores. WHY SOMERSETT? We had been looking for a golf and outdoor community for nearly five years before we happened by accident on Somersett in 2003. Out best previous option that we found was near San Louis Obispo. But I was still working at the time and traveling a lot. A 3- to 4-hour drive home following a 12- to 16-hour flight did not sound appealing. Having an airport only 15 minutes away was much better and our first five years here I commuted to San Jose most weeks. The other benefits were that this was 30
a new community, and everyone moving in was from somewhere else. This has generated some really good friendships. WHY DID YOU RUN FOR THE BOARD? Over the last several years we seem to be losing the close community feeling that was so prevalent in the first decade we have been here. This is most likely due to some of the original residents moving on and some of the newer residents have not been included quickly enough into the spirit of community that was originally here. Somersett has changed from predominantly growth orientation to a more mature community. This should not mean that the sense of community is lost and I wanted to see if I could help in getting a sense of cohesiveness, communication and camaraderie back. WHAT STRENGTHS/SKILLS DO YOU BRING TO THE BOARD? I have several decades of working with diverse groups trying to achieve common objectives. Whether this was getting very diverse companies working together on complex systems, getting people from over 150 countries to deliver services consistently or getting executives and technologists to work to deploy products. The key was to build a common understanding of the problems to be addressed, to work through the differences and to achieve the common goal (even when that common goal was not totally agreed upon).
In all of these endeavors, the one skill that was practiced the least was listening. I often became the designated listener while all others talked. From the insight obtained from listening, I could develop alternatives for solutions and could resolve most the conflicts that had arisen. FAMILY: My wife and I were the first of our family to come here. My sister-in-law followed shortly and then my daughter and husband shortly after that. So, our entire family lives in Somersett. HOBBIES: I enjoy playing golf and bridge and am not very good at either one. Since I did not start playing these in earnest until after we arrived here, I do not expect to become very skilled at either but still can have fun at both (most of the time). We enjoy the terrific restaurants around Reno and Tahoe when we can. The entertainment in Reno is amazingly good compared to places such as San Francisco and Los Angeles considering the size of the audience we can gather. And the Reno Jazz Orchestra, the Art Town music programs are never missed. SOMETHING PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU: I am a really good cook and try to grow my own vegetable and herbs to make things even better.
