The Impact Snap

A

s I continue to teach and play golf for a living, I strive to simplify things. I find that working to have the club travel on a consistent path away from and back to the ball with the clubface meeting the ball squarely are the two most important things for consistency and solid contact. The goal is eliminating as many variables as possible. Meeting the ball with a square clubface in relation to the path that the club is traveling on through the ball allows a player to maximize the distance the ball travels. The Impact Snap is a great new training aid that has been endorsed by noteworthy teachers. It helps a player understand the relationship between on-plane delivery of the club and the speed needed to square the club to maximize consistency and distance. Check it out at www.impactsnap.com. For the avid golfer, I also recommend visiting Peak Performance Mind Coaching at www.myspiritofgolf.com and subscribing to their free daily coaching e-mail. Make it a point this year to play the Canyon Nine and the country club course – some of the best golf in northern Nevada is right here in your backyard! If you need help with your game, contact our four professionals at the golf shop by calling 787-1800, ext. 2.

Play the Tom Kite-Designed Championship Country Club Course All Somersett residents may play the championship country club course four times every year. Each resident may book a foursome of players at a rate of $65 per player (in season April through October) and $40 per player (off season November through March). This includes green fee, driving range usage and golf cart. We take tee times for residents three days in advance at 787-1800 x2. Ladies are asked not to wear denim, spaghetti-strapped tops, short shorts or clothing that reveals the midriff. Proper footwear such as golf shoes or tennis shoes is also required. Please be advised that we are cart path only from November through March.

Master’s Par Three Tournament

Saturday, April 8 | 9 am shotgun start $30 adult, $20 junior (under 18) Our traditional commemorative Masters event is back! The Masters Golf Tournament is traditionally the start of the golf season, including here in Reno, and our event mimics the one played at Augusta’s Par Three Course on the Wednesday prior to the actual tournament. Everyone in the Somersett community is invited to participate, and the tournament has divisions for men, women and juniors. This year’s event will be held on the country club course. • We will award the top gross (actual score) and net (with established handicap through the GHIN system) scores. Adults with no established handicap will participate in the Callaway Scoring Division. Junior scoring will be gross only, and if participation warrants, age divisions will be added. • We will offer a deuce pool for all players who make a gross two on a hole. In the event of a hole in one, all deuce pool money will go to those making holes in one. • We’ll award closest to the hole on all par threes for men and women, with juniors falling into the men’s and women’s category for closest-to-the-hole awards. • Juniors will fall into the men and women category for closest to the hole awards. • While playing your round, we will also test your knowledge with a Master’s Trivia Contest.

Marley!

Linda Morgan and her dog Marley guide area hikes for Somersett residents. Here are some of the great comments made about Marley:

Come join rley a M d n a Linda g! this sprin

Marley is one of the cutest furry friends anyone could ask for. Besides being loving and always aiming to please, she’s an obsessive retriever of all things playful and a herder of all things lost! I have personally hiked and snowshoed with her dozens of times and she is relentless. Whether its a pinecone, a snowball, or a stick the size of your pinky, she treats them all the same in her quest to retrieve. She is also an avid water dog. Whether its finding the only little stream on a hike to lay in, or a full fledged, all-out leap into a mountain lake, you can count on Marley to find the water. She gives all she has and once the hike is done, she’ll be sound asleep in the back of the car in minutes. She is very loving and likes to cuddle. What am AMAZING dog she is! —Ron Anderson When I think of Marley the following comes to mind: Boundless energy, pine cones, snowballs and that goofy tongue! A hike or snowshoe isn’t the same without her. Such a wonderful companion for us all. —Lynn Heislein Sweet, energetic, lovable and so much fun! —Jeanne Davies “Super Dog”! She keeps us entertained on the “slogging” part of snowshoe hikes (and lets us know when not enough sticks and pinecones are being thrown for her to chase). But still quite the lady...she seems to fondly remember anyone she has ever met. —Alvin Chesson

Catholic Charities Preparing to Help Children in Need By Matt Vaughan

o one does more to ease the pain of poverty. That is the slogan for Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada. As a non-profit organization, our goal is to help people climb out of the depths of poverty by providing them with the tools they need to create a life of self-sufficiency. There are many ways we try to accomplish this goal through our various poverty assistance programs, such as, feeding the hungry, clothing the less fortunate, caring for the elderly, bringing families together via adoption, and guiding the lost who struggle with substance abuse. Yet, that only scratches the surface of what we do at Catholic Charities. The success of our organization is dependent on support from the community and other service agencies. In order to accomplish our goals we often look to other non-profits for assistance. By partnering with agencies like Washoe County Social Services or the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office we’re able to extend our reach and help a larger portion of the population. This kind of collaboration is how we’re able to work toward solutions to many of the problems plaguing our community, such as poverty and homelessness. This kind of mindset has helped build the foundation for events like Operation Easter Basket. In an effort to give our youngest and most vulnerable clients a happy Easter, Catholic Charities & the St. Vincent’s Programs is holding the 5th annual “Operation Easter Basket” pancake breakfast on Sunday, April 9th in the St. Vincent’s Dining Room at 325 Valley Road. Staff and volunteers with Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada will be distributing hundreds of Easter baskets to local children up to age 12. Aside from Easter basket distribution, the event will include a pancake breakfast, a visit from the Easter Bunny, carnival games, egg decorating, arts and crafts, face-painting, free books, and much more. Many of the children served at our annual events are either living in the Family Shelter, temporary housing, or local motels in the downtown corridor. We are currently seeking donations of pre-filled Easter baskets for the event. The baskets are typically filled with toys, games and candy. We ask that each basket be labeled with the intended gender and age of the child. This event is made possible year after year thanks to the generosity of the northern Nevada community. If you’d like to make a donation, please visit ccsnn.org to see a full list of our donation drop-off centers. For more information about Operation Easter Basket, check out our event page at ccsnn.org/pages/operation-easter-basket.

Introducing

College Nannies + Sitters + Tutors to Reno and Northern Nevada!

C

ollege Nannies + Sitters + Tutors is the nation’s most respected, complete and professional resource helping families raise smart, confident, well-adjusted children. Since 2001 we’ve built local professional teams across the country that have helped hundreds of parents create more time and flexibility in their schedules by hiring a sitter, nanny or tutor for their children. Our convenient new app, My Sitters™, allows clients to access our highly trained sitters that are specifically aligned with their family’s needs. “These are NOT independent contractors who are randomly linked to families. Every employee goes through a rigorous national background screening and interview process. They also go through an orientation and ongoing training where they learn creative play, crafts, games, meal ideas and more. We hire kind, competent role models that love children and believe in building stronger families. You can sign up for our sitter service today!” CNST was brought to Reno by a local mom of three boys, Somersett resident Julie LeBlanc-Warneke.

Grand Opening Celebration March 11, 2017 | 3:00 to 7:00 pm Stop by for refreshments, raffles and fun. Raffles will include gift cards, free date nights, and free tutoring hours for families that sign up for our sitter service. Also meet some of our sitters, nannies and tutors when you visit.

Julie LeBlancWarneke

Occupation: Franchise Owner, College Nannies + Sitters + Tutors | Reno; Business Owner, Nanny Services of Nevada, Inc. YEARS IN Nevada: 30 years Originally from: I was born in Maine, and moved to California in 6th grade. After graduating high school, relocated to Reno in 1986. Greatest accomplishment: It’s no one thing…it’s lots of daily little things. Maintaining peace, joy and balance in the midst of this crazy world. Probably just like everyone else it’s balancing family life, children, work, our aging parents and all of life’s regular ups and downs all while still making time for what is also truly important. For me it’s including others outside of just “me and mine.” Being a good friend, citizen. Putting people and relationships first.

Favorite Activities: Spending time with and cooking for family and friends, working, hiking, biking, organizing everything in sight, and reading as many books as possible. Last Book Read: Hehehe. I have four or five starting and finishing simultaneously. I just finished the “Game of Thrones” series and two business books, “The Ideal Team Player” by Patrick Lencioni and “Emotional Intelligence 2.0” by Travis Bradberry. why somersett: We love the community of friends and families living here, the views, the access to hiking paths, convenience and proximity to everything in Reno and the great schools!
