Building on the success of last year’s Learn to Golf Program, Stuart Smith and the staff will instruct this beginner/ intermediate class. Whether you are a former golfer looking to dust off your clubs and brush up on your fundamentals OR someone eager to learn for the first time, this is an ideal program. A typical session includes clinic-style instruction as well as individual assistance. Over the course of each month we will cover all aspects of the game, including full swing, putting, short game and on-course playing instruction. This program will run through the season with a projected end date of September 26. If participation dictates, we will add an additional 1 pm class on Saturdays during the height of the season. Please sign up four days prior to clinic time with golf shop staff at 787-1800, ext. 103. We are all excited for the 2020 golf season!

Proper footwear, such as golf or tennis shoes, is required. Please be advised we are cart-path-only from November through March.

Driving Range Somersett residents are welcome to utilize the driving range at the country club. The SOA/Country Club agreement allows for complimentary use from the north side of the range year-round and from the mats on the south side during the off season (Novemberthrough March). Access to the south side turf range, putting green and chipping green is available for a cost of a $10 per person per day fee payable at the golf shop prior to usage. This event is open to all members, guests, community members, professionals and members of the Northern Nevada Golf Association— in other words, everyone! Masters Par Three Tournament Saturday, April 11, 9 am shotgun start $30/adult, $20/junior (under 18) & $9/person cart fee, if applicable Our traditional commemorative Masters Golf Tournament is back! The Masters Golf Tournament is traditionally the start of the golf season, including here in Reno, and our event mimics the one played at Augusta’s Par Three Course on the Wednesday prior to the actual tournament. Everyone in the Somersett community is welcome to participate—Country Club members AND residents who are not members. The tournament has divisions for men, women and juniors and is played at the country club course. • We will award the top gross (actual score) and net (with established handicap through the GHIN system) scores. Adults with no established handicap will participate in the Callaway Scoring Division. Junior scoring will be gross only. If participation warrants, we will have age divisions. • We will offer a “Deuce Pool’’ for all players who make a gross two on a hole. In case of a hole-in-one, all “Deuce Pool” money will go to those making holes-in-one. • We will award closest to the hole on all par threes for men and women, with juniors falling into the men’s and women’s category for closest-to-the-hole awards. • While playing your round, we will also test your knowledge with a Master’s Trivia Contest.

Entry fees cover green fee, prize fund and a $5 food credit in the Grille to be used either prior to or after your round. Regular cart fees will apply. After your round, please join us in the Grille for live coverage of the third round of the 2020 Masters Tournament. Members, please sign up on Clubster. Community members, please sign up with golf shop staff at 787-1800, ext. 2. We hope you can join us for this fabulous start-of-the-season event!

Junior Golf Opportunity The Somersett Golf & Country Club is offering one boy and one girl aged 8-12 complimentary 2020 Junior Golf Program entry. Both the men’s and women’s golf associations are sponsoring the enrollment fee of $335 for the season, May through October. If you have a child in this age group who is not a member of the country club and would be excited to participate in this amazing program, please pick up an application at the country club. The application requires a copy of your child’s most recent report card and a short, handwritten paragraph by the junior telling why he or she would like to participate in the Somersett Junior Golf Program. Thank you to both of our golf associations here in Somersett and to the country club golf staff for your generosity. What a fantastic opportunity! Applications are due by Friday, April 10. For more information, contact Stuart Smith at ssmith@somersett.com or 787-1800, ext. 105. Please note: Prior winners are not eligible for the 2020 program.

GOLF TIP:

Brush Up on Pre-Swing Fundamentals By Stuart Smith—PGA Director of Golf

A

s we get excited about the new golf season, the best thing we can do as players is to refresh our memory of pre-swing fundamentals, which include hold of the club, stance, posture, hand position and ball position. You will increase your chances of improving this season if these fundamentals are up to speed. Improving leads to enjoying. Simply said, the hold of the club for a right-hander is as follows: 1) Hold the club in last three fingers of your left hand. 2) Place the heel pad of your left hand on the top of the club. 3) Lightly apply your thumb and forefinger with the “V” that they form pointing to your right cheek to your right shoulder. 4) Place your right middle two fingers underneath your left index finger. 5) House your left thumb in between the two pads of your right hand. 6) Lightly apply your thumb and forefinger with the “V” that they form pointing to your right cheek and right shoulder. 7) Clubface should be aimed at your target.

R U BY VON SCH WER IN REALTOR® CRS

It is common that when getting into a golf posture we simply droop our shoulders and bow down to the ball. It is important to understand that good posture starts with bending at the hips while keeping the chest fairly tall. The simplest of golf swings is performed around a flat back/straight spine. Make sure you keep ball position for your higher lofted clubs in the center while progressively moving the ball forward as the clubs get longer. A good rule of thumb is that your 5 iron will be approximately at the ¼ mark while the driver will be just inside your left heel.

Need help? Our professional staff is anxious to get you on your way to better golf. You won’t find a more experienced teaching crew in all of Reno. Give us a call at 787-1800.

OCCUPATION: Musician / Producer / Restauranteur My official title is Chief Executive Officer of Fun for the Peavine Taphouse “eats & beats” ORIGINALLY FROM: Louisiana HOW LONG AT SOMERSETT: We relocated from Truckee around Thanksgiving 2017 and immediately fell in love with everything about this community. WHY SOMERSETT? My wife Amy and I were interested in finding a real neighborhood community as Truckee and Tahoe in general has turned into predominantly second homeowners. Our former neighborhood was filled with VRBO rentals. We wanted to know our neighbors and have a safe place to raise our children. We love living in a gated community where all of the kids play outside together in the streets and parents look out for one another. They say it takes a village and we definitely found our home right here in the Village at Town Center. We are recruiting all our fun friends from Truckee to join the renaissance happening here in NW Reno. GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT: I’ve enjoyed some pretty nice accolades and rewards from my professional skiing and music career. At the end of the day, my role of becoming a father is hands down the greatest accomplishment I have ever experienced. I can’t really say it is an accomplishment but more a gift and a blessing every day to watch them learn and grow. Children are the future! FAVORITE ACTIVITIES: Music, skiing, yoga, mountain biking, surfing and building community. SOMETHING PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU: I sing and play guitar in a fairly successful rock band called Black Sunshine but all I listen to is National Public Radio and country music. I’m also addicted to watching episodes of Jeopardy learning odd factoids! WHY OPEN THE PEAVINE TAPHOUSE? After walking by the location and studying the demographics of the area for 18 months, I knew we needed something like this in our neighborhood. A gathering place where we can build community and meet with neighbors. Dine with the family without breaking the bank. We are very appreciative of the support Somersett has shown for the Peavine Taphouse.

TIM AND TINA HALE

BATTLING LEUKEMIA:

One man’s journey

28

The first indication

that anything was wrong was a series of “weird total exhaustion events.’’ Somersett resident Tom Hale, who was 60 at the time, was no slouch when it came to exercise. “I could climb Mt. Rose and run 10 miles,’’ he says. “This was worse.’’ Once he was working out at the Fitness Center at the Club and after a mile on the elliptical, he was “completely exhausted.’’ But after a good night’s sleep, he felt fine, so he went on with his life. Later, in June 2018, severe abdominal pains sent him to the Renown emergency room and a subsequent hospitalization found that the pain was the result of a blood clot in his kidneys. But bloodwork doctors ordered during the hospital stay uncovered an unexpected and terrifying diagnosis— acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). “It was an accident that they found it,’’ Tom says, “But it saved my life.’’ Leukemia is a fast-growing blood cancer, so within a few hours, Tom underwent chemotherapy. He drew encouragement from his doctor who told him “we can cure this.’’ Tom asked if he would ever be able to ride his motorcycle or play golf again. His doctor said “yes.’’ But Tom’s only chance of survival was to get a bone marrow transplant. DNA testing miraculously found an incredibly good potential donor, a female in her 20s with 10 out of 10 HLA (human leukocyte antigen) markers that matched Tom’s. Tom and his wife Tina chose to travel to the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix for the transplant because it was highly rated—and their daughter lives nearby. “It was a huge help having her there,’’ says Tom, “especially for Tina.’’ At the clinic, doctors first used chemo to “scorch,’’ or essentially remove, Tom’s bone marrow, a process that took a week. After a day of rest, the stem cells were infused. Then, the waiting began. It would take 10–14 days to see if his counts would start to rise. To make matters worse, Tom’s immunity was almost non-existent and “I was susceptible to anything,’’ he recalls. Plus, there was the knowledge that the marrow transplants don’t always go well. Tom had a sign his daughter made hanging near his bed at Renown and later at the Mayo Clinic with the inscription, “I can. I will. I must.’’ He looked at it every day. “The whole process was hell on earth,’’ he says. “There were several times that I wanted to give up.’’ After two weeks his numbers started to rise. “The emotional ride was incredible,’’ he says. Tom was in the hospital for five weeks, and he had to stay in Phoenix for 100 days while doctors at the clinic watched for complications, like organ rejection. None of that happened, in fact, the only side effect he had was a skin reaction.

Bone marrow donors are always needed. Tom says the process is not painful, but it is involved and requires time and scheduling. For more information, go to

Tom credits his textbook recovery to a good bone-marrow match, his physical fitness prior to his diagnosis, and divine intervention. “The number of people praying for me was incredible,’’ he says. He doesn’t take anything for granted anymore and has a fresh appreciation for health, family and friends—and nurses. “They have a thankless job,’’ he says, and he made it a point to go back to his ward at Renown and thank them. “There were a few tears,’’ he says. Lessons learned from a battle with leukemia: 1. Don’t take your health for granted. 2. Don’t sweat the small stuff, it’s not important. Don’t waste a minute on it. 3. Family and friends are everything. I love my wife, Tina. 4. Live in the moment and appreciate the beauty around you. “Just driving into Somersett on a sunny day, I look around me and notice the beauty. I never did that before.’’ 5. Give back wherever and whenever you can.

Why Somersett? Tom’s business partner lived in Somersett and told Tom and Tina to take a look at the community. They loved the Town Center and all the activities available and Tina found a house she loved. They bought that house and have lived here for five years.
