Golf Tip Stuart Smith PGA Director of Golf

A

s we get excited for the new golf season the best thing we can do as players is to refresh our memory with pre-swing fundamentals. Pre-swing fundamentals include hold of the club, stance, posture, hand position and ball position. You will increase your chances of improving this coming season more if these are up to speed. Improving leads to enjoying. Simply said you hold of the club for right hander is as follows: 1) Hold club in last three fingers of your left hand. 2) Next place the heel pad of your left hand on the top of the club. 3) Lightly apply your thumb and forefinger with the “V” that they form pointing to your right cheek to right shoulder. 4) Place right middle two fingers underneath your left index finger. 5) House your left thumb in between the two pads of your right hand. 6) Clubface should be aimed at your target.

It is very common that when getting into a golf posture we simply droop our shoulders and bow down to the ball. It is important to understand that good posture starts from bending at the hips while keeping the chest fairly tall. The simplest of golf swings is performed around a flat back/straight spine. Make sure you keep ball position for your higher lofted clubs in the center while progressively moving the ball forward as the clubs get longer. A good rule of thumb is that your 5 iron will be approximately at the ¼ mark while the driver will be just inside your left heel. Need help? Our professional staff at the country club is anxious to get you on your way to better golf. You won’t find a more experienced teaching crew in all of Reno. Give us a call at 775-7871800.

Please Excuse our Mess We are excited to have broken ground on our new Clubhouse. It has been a long time coming and it will surely be a building that all Somersett Residents—not just Country Club members—will be proud of. Executive Chef Don Allen Bauer is looking forward to welcoming you to the new SunSett Grille at the projected completion date of July 2017. With limited seating in our current restaurant we kindly ask that prior to visiting us this season you please call 787-1800 ext 707 for availability during our busy golf and event season. Thank you.

Last Book Read: An Invisible Thread by Laura Schroff and The Chemist by Stephenie Meyer.

why somersett: We initially moved into Somersett, not really knowing the area, but loved all of the amenities, the spectacular views and of course living on the golf course was very appealing (this is very rare in the UK). All this in addition to being so close to the mountains and Lake Tahoe! However, in the subsequent years that we have lived in Somersett, our answer to “Why Somersett would change to the community. The friends we have made here, and how welcome they have made us feel, are the reasons why we were so desperate to make our way back, to what we now call home when we had to return to the UK in 2014.

Three-week-old Muffin Top drinks about 2 tablespoons of formula every 3.5 hours. Her mother was hit by a car: the other kittens did not survive. Foster Coordinator Tara Davis cares for Muffin Top and said the fatty tummy is good: kittens should be tear-drop shaped.

Community Profile

to have such a loving community,” says Davis.

T

he Nevada Humane Society is a “no-kill shelter, creating a no-kill community.” Incorporated in 1932, the non-profit continues to address the stray animal population’s needs with innovative programming and oodles of support—from folks like you. NHS Foster Care Coordinator Tara Davis says during last year’s “kitten season,” area residents helped foster more than 3,000 kittens and cats. Davis, whose background is in adult and child care, has worked at the NHS for two years. The foster program cares for animals too young to spay or neuter, older with medical issues, and even offers an Angel hospice program. “We couldn’t be a no-kill shelter without volunteers,” she Nevada Humane Society Foster Coordinator emphasizes. Foster families come from all walks of life: the college Tara Davis loves people and animals. She has student who misses a pet, the empty-nester who has some extra time, one boyfriend, two dogs and two cats. Her dogs a mother who is teaching children to care for animals. are Billah, a Pom/Yorkie, and 4-year-old Baily the Nevada Humane Society President Tierra Bonaldi (The Impetus Border Collie. They get along just fine with felines Agency), took in a mom and “10-pack” of kittens last year. NHS Penny and Binx. always needs foster homes—for a broad range of animals. “We have some bunnies out there right now,” said Davis. “People really step up. You should consider if you have the time and space. Kittens who bottle feed will need you every two hours.” A secluded area is desired in your home. During the busy months, from the end of May through July, 300–500 families are needed. Sign up online at http:// nevadahumanesociety.org/volunteer/about-fostering/ or call 856-2000. Not ready to be up all night? There are plenty of ways to pitch in. Be a doggie “Hiking Buddy,” volunteer at the shelter for socializing, or grab some much needed supplies and drop them off. What’s top on the wish list? Cats would like laser lights, bubbles, small toys in bulk; dry or canned food (no fish, please); beds, non-clumping cat litter; kitten milk replacer and small cat carriers. Our canine friends wish for six-inch or larger chew-resistant, XXL Kongs, Jolly Balls; chewy and non-rawhide treats, collars, leashes and harnesses of all sizes and puppy milk replacer. General wish list items are towels, blankets, Kuranda beds and towers; digital camera, iPads, laptop computers; office supplies (white copy paper and card stock, pens). NHS’s Trap, Neuter, Return program seeks Tru Catch 30LTD humane cat traps. According to Davis, this program allows feral cats to “live life happy and healthy,” while reducing the almost 26,000 cat-strong feral population.
You are invited to drop off donations daily, 11 am to 6:30 pm in Reno 2825-B Longley Lane, or Carson City, 549 Airport Road. “We are super fortunate to have such a loving community,” says Davis. —Story and photos by Amy Edgett/ 360Pixie.com

Comparative Market Analysis (CMA)Summary Report

A) The VUE/ VIllage SOLD

A)

Residential Summary Statistics

There have been seven sales so far at an average of $14.00 per foot or a modest increase of 1% but they did go up by 14% in 2016.

B) SINGLE FAMILY HOMES Sold So far since January 1 there have been 23 homes sold at an average dollar per foot of $200.00 or up 4% since the average of $191.00 per foot in 2016. There was a double whammy of the election and the long winter and now buyers are out in full force.

B)

C) DEL WEBB SOLD Since January 1 there have been 17 Del Webb homes sold at an average of $225.00 per foot compared to $219.00 per foot in all of 2016 for an increase so far of 3%. The developer is selling the balance of the homes they had and once that happens values will tend to spike even more. The market in Somersett continues to be healthy, one thing that is being questioned is why are there so many foreclosures in Somersett. People are seeing this on Zillow and it is not true. What is happening is Zillow is showing notices of defaults being recorded on properties in Somersett which is a precursor to foreclosure. But in reality what is happening is they are recording “Requests for notice of defaults.” What this means is if there is a notice of default, Washoe County will make the lender aware of the notice of default. We are working with Zillow to correct this so it does not appear that a property is going into pre-foreclosure when in fact the owner of the property has never been late on a payment. Stay tuned as we learn more. —David Hughes

Tennis Instructor at Somersett

Occupation: Part-time FedEx Employee and Part-time Tennis Instructor YEARS IN Nevada: Native Greatest accomplishment: My greatest accomplishments have been driven by my perseverance and working hard to achieve short and long term goals. With my hard work and diligence, I was able to graduate from UNR with Education, become a certified Tennis Coach and Ski Instructor. None of my accomplishments have come easy. But my determination has helped me to be a better tennis coach, so I am very sympathetic and patient with all of my students as they learn skills and the game. Favorite Activities: Teaching and playing tennis. Last Book Read: I’ve actually read three or four books in the last couple of months. The last two tennis books I’ve read are: “Zen Tennis” by Dr. Joe Parent and “Playing Zen-Sational Tennis” by David Ranney. In addition to reading tennis books, I also spend a great deal of time watching pros on YouTube as they teach different techniques.

Scheduling Drip Irrigation Leslie Lyles, M.S. Stewardship Horticultural

I

n my job as a Horticultural Consultant I often need to check my clients’ irrigation time clocks. Generally, it appears as though irrigation scheduling for lawns (spray irrigation) is well understood, but the same can not be said for our trees and shrubs (Drip). Frequently I am unable to discern the lawn watering stations from the drip stations by simply looking at the schedule. If you stop to consider sprinkler application rates versus drip emitter application rates, you’ll understand why this is a problem. Spray is a high-volume application rate measured in Gallons Per Minute (GPM), while drip is low volume, measured in Gallons Per Hour (GPH). This means that in a ten-minute cycle a sprinkler can put out gallons of water, while the drip emitter might be putting out less than a quart of water. If one considers the rooting depth of the plants being watered, it is clear why identical schedules for turf and trees do not work: turf grass has a relatively shallow root system, generally less than a foot depth, while trees and shrubs have a much more extensive system, running farther and deeper than the typical turf grass. Generally speaking, it is advised to run spray irrigation cycles for short durations with several start times (example: two to three start times for 10 minutes per start), pulsing the water on to avoid runoff. Because of the slow delivery rate, drip irrigation does not need to be ‘pulsed’ on. Rather than numerous short start times, it is better to schedule drip irrigation for a much longer duration (remember, it is being applied in GPH), less often. For example: rather than watering with three start times for 10 minutes each, three days a week, it is much more efficient to water drip zones for one start time twice a week for 45 minutes, or even one start time for 90 minutes once a week. The same quantity of water is being applied, but more efficiently. This allows the water to infiltrate deeper, encouraging deeper rooting. Of course, there are a number of factors that go into determining the proper drip schedule, including the type and age of plants being watered (perennials vs. trees and shrubs), the number and placement of emitters per plant, the size of the emitters (1 GPH or 2 GPH), and the soil type. It is not uncommon for me to schedule zones with mature trees and shrubs for 2–3 hours per start time to ensure adequate watering. In order for drip irrigation systems to properly function they not only need to be installed correctly (proper components, not mixing micro-jets and emitters on the same line, correct number and placement of emitters around each plant…), but accurately scheduled as well. Providing longer irrigation times less often will encourage deeper rooting and healthier plants. Proper irrigation scheduling can help your plants not only survive, but thrive on drip irrigation.

To care for each individual with dignity and respect and join you in honoring them.

Earlier this year my mother became a resident of Stone Valley. Unfortunately, she passed away too soon; however, by the time she did, we had all become part of the Stone Valley “family.” While my mother was there, we were reassured and so thankful for the level of care and love she received every day from the entire team. —Leslee P.
