Tips from the Country Club Professionals Stuart Smith – PGA Director of Golf As we get excited for the new golf season, the best thing we can do as players is to refresh our memory with pre-swing fundamentals. Preswing fundamentals include hold on the club, stance, posture, hand position and ball position. You will increase your chances of improving this coming season if these fundamentals are up to speed. Simply stated, the hold on the club for the right-hander is as follows: 1) Hold club in last three fingers of your left hand. 2) Next, place the heel pad of your left hand on the top of the club. 3) Lightly apply your thumb and forefinger with the “V” that they form pointing to your right cheek to right shoulder. 4) Place right middle two fingers underneath your left index finger. 5) House your left thumb in between the two pads of your right hand. 6) Lightly apply your thumb and forefinger with the “V” that they form pointing to your right cheek and right shoulder. 7) Clubface should be aimed at your target. Need help? Our staff at the country club is anxious to get you on your way to better golf!

Rick Christensen – PGA Head Golf Professional

May tee times: Tuesday through Friday starting at 8 am Saturday through Sunday starting at 7:30 am June tee times: Tuesday through Friday starting at 7:30 am Saturday & Sunday starting at 7 am All Somersett residents can play the championship country club course twice per year. Each resident may book a foursome of players at a rate of $60 per player. This includes green fee, driving range usage and golf cart. We take tee times from residents three days in advance at 7871800 ext 2.

In putting, we want the ball to roll. In pitching, we want the ball to get airborne, and in chipping, we want a combination of the two. Here is a simple rule of thumb to help you accomplish your goal. If you want the ball to roll, keep the lower half of your body completely still – no weight shift or knee or hip movement. If you want the ball to get airborne, lower body action is necessary. Try having your trailing knee (right knee for right handed players) follow the clubhead through impact. Remember, the knee moves to get the ball airborne and stays still to get the ball rolling.

Bocce Courts

Club path on take away can and will affect the club path on the down swing. In the first stages of the take away, the club shaft should be parallel to the target line at approximately the same time the club shaft is parallel to the ground. The most common fault in most golf swings is bringing the club back too far inside, or having the club shaft pointing to the right off the target line when it should be parallel. Bringing the club back inside will cause the downswing to come over the top, one of the largest attributes to the slice. If one brings the club back parallel to the target line, the down swing can then come from the inside to help eliminate the slice.

May Hours: Tues–Sun, 8 am–6 pm* June Hours: Tues–Sun, 8 am–7 pm* For those interested in playing bocce, please note there is a grooming rake/brush located on the outside wall of the golf shop. Bocce balls and scoreboards may be checked out from the golf shop staff during operating hours. *Players may continue until dusk if in possession of personal bocce balls.

Association Information The SOA is professionally managed by FirstService Residential. Onsite office is located at The Club at Town Center. Customer Care: 775-624-9152 Assessment mailing address: PO Box 54089 Los Angeles, CA 90054-0089 Account information: nevada.fsrconnect.com/somersett OFFICE HOURS Monday through Friday: 8 am–5 pm Closed Monday, May 26

Assessment Reminder

Landscaping for Summer

Assessments are due on the first of each month and are past due if not paid by 5 pm on the 30th of the month. A late fee of $25 will be posted to accounts not paid by the last business day of the month. Accounts 60 days past due will lose clubhouse and/or Canyon Nine privileges. Accounts 75 days past due will be sent to collections.

By now you should have your irrigation system running and the landscaping on your property will be greening up nicely. If you have a fire pit in your landscaping, please take special care to trim any nearby shrubs or tree branches before putting the fire pit into use. If you have not turned on your irrigation system, please do so as soon as possible to prevent further damage to your landscaping. With the dry winter that we experienced, attention will be needed for weeds in the community earlier than in previous years. The Association will routinely inspect for landscaping compliance within the standards of the community but if you have any concerns regarding a property, please feel free to contact the Association. Be aware that if violation proceedings have already been started on a property, the Association cannot share any information regarding that violation. It is considered confidential under Nevada Law. For any new home purchases, the CC&R’s require that rear yard landscaping be installed within six months of your purchase date. Written approval must be granted by the Association for your rear yard landscaping plan prior to installation.

Assessment Payments Submitted Online Did you know you can pay your monthly assessments online from the FirstService Residential website? Please be aware that payments submitted online go through a third party payment processing company called Paylease. Payments submitted through Paylease will, and typically do, take up to three business days to be credited to your assessment account. Please keep this information in mind for last minute assessment payments as payments received after the 30th are subject to a $25 late fee. Paylease does charge a fee for its service, and you can pay a larger fee to have the payment posted within one business day. If you would like information on automatic payments that are processed free of charge, please contact the association and request a ‘surepay’ application. You may also submit payments to the SOA office, via check or money order only.

Gate Codes Homeowners living behind gates within the community, excluding the Village and Vue, are reminded to change their gate codes annually to limit unwanted traffic. Utility and mail companies have all been assigned vendor codes for gates throughout the community. These vendors include UPS, FedEx, Truckee Meadows, NV Energy and Waste Management. If you have another vendor doing specific work on your property, you may give them your gate code or you may contact the Association to set up a separate gate code.

Compliance Information To report a non-compliance, please email or call Sean Stapleton at sstapleton@mysomersett.com or 787-4500 ext 322. Please note that while we do investigate and document each complaint received, we cannot disclose the status of anyone’s account. Should a homeowner not respond to or correct a violation, he or she will be summoned to a hearing at which time they could be suspended from the Club and assessed fines. Once fines reach $500, a lien could be placed on the property. At this time the Association has a policy not to enter a property, unless it is bank owned, and then only to repair front yard landscaping. 20

If you have a fire pit in your landscaping, please take special care to trim any nearby shrubs or tree branches before putting the fire pit into use.

Sierra Canyon Giving Your Trees a Healthy Start Local arborist Leslie Lyles gave Sierra Canyon an excellent article that highlights important aspects of tree care. I have summarized them below: • Keep lawn mowers and weed trimmers away from the trunk! Young trees have thin, tender bark that can be easily torn and cut. The tree’s vascular system (the cambium) is right under the bark. When the bark is damaged, the vascular system can be severed. Weed trimmers cause irreparable damage and the more severe the damage, the less likely the tree is to grow and survive. • Keep all turf at least 12 inches away from trees planted in lawns. Grass competes with young roots for water and nutrients. Young trees simply grow faster with no turf at the base. An added benefit to keeping the grass away from the trunk is that you can avoid accidental damage from weed trimmers and lawn mowers. • Make sure your trees are not planted too deeply! When you look at your tree, you should see a widening of the trunk (root flare) above the soil as the trunk transitions into the root zone. Root systems need to be close to the soil surface. When the tree’s root system is too far below the soil surface, even a few inches too deep, the roots are deprived of oxygen and cannot function properly. When a tree is planted too deeply, it may decline slowly over several years before finally dying. • Water your trees in the winter. If there has been no significant precipitation within three weeks, you need to water young trees. Tree roots actively grow in the winter when the top of the tree is dormant. Winter is an important time for a tree to establish roots that will feed it during the summer. The water absorbing roots are the tiny hair-sized roots growing in the top foot or so of the soil. When these roots dry out, they die and the tree needs to expend valuable stored energy to regrow new roots before it can put on growth in the spring. A healthy root system makes for a healthy tree.

• Have a certified arborist prune your trees, as improper pruning can lead to long term problems, infection or structural problems. The best time to prune is when a tree is only a few years old. A certified arborist trained in structural pruning of young trees can identify and correct structural defects that could lead to branch failure as the tree matures. When a young tree is properly pruned, a good branch structure is established early and it often needs little or no pruning as it matures, making for cost savings down the road. • Remove stakes after one full year of growth. The best time to remove stakes is in the winter when there are no leaves on the tree. Many people mistakenly believe the stakes are necessary in windy areas. In reality, leaving stakes on too long can weaken the tree’s trunk and inhibit proper root growth. • Prior to removing stakes, grasp the trunk and shake. The tree should feel well anchored in the soil and you should not be able to see the soil heaving around the base. If the tree fails to root properly, it may be because it has a girdling root system from being in the pot too long. You may want to have a certified arborist inspect the tree if it is not rooting properly to make sure there are no problems that will cause it to eventually topple in our area’s heavy winds. • Make sure you purchase new trees from a quality nursery. Low cost trees purchased from mass-market retailers are often low quality, pot bound or structurally inferior. Healthy, strong trees get their start from healthy nursery stock. By following these recommendations from Leslie, your trees should grow and mature into beautiful assets to your home and neighborhood for years to come.
