From the SOA Board A New Snack Bar is Coming

Photo Contest

The Board approved re-opening plans for the Snack Bar at the Club at Town Center’s pool this summer, including a modest renovation budget. We’re excited to introduce a new beverage and food menu hosted by the Peavine Taphouse and featuring some of the more popular items on their grill, right at the pool. The goal is to open by Memorial Day. You asked for it, and it is happening, so make plans to discover deliciousness at the pool this summer.

Photos of the sights around Somersett were submitted by residents to be featured in The Club at Town Center. The next time you are at the Club, make it a point to view these because many are stunning. We live in a beautiful place and the proof is hanging on the walls at the Club.

The Canyon Nine Golf Course The Somersett Canyon Nine Golf Course will be converted to an exclusive amenity of Somersett and Somersett and Sierra Canyon residents can play for free starting May 1. Guests of homeowners can play for $10. Golfers will still check in at the Golf Hut or the front desk for a bag tag. Now there is no excuse not to work on your game in a friendly, relaxed, no-pressure environment.

New Events this Summer The newly formed Community Events Committee is off to a big start, planning another 5-6 community events this summer. Over 100 people said they would be willing to help with the events! Wow, Somersett wants to get involved! The final selection is happening now followed by the organization of the details, budgets, and the selection of a team to manage each event. Watch your Somersett calendar and get ready to re-engage this summer.

Some Fiscal Good News For the first time ever, and without raising assessments, we managed to pay down our debt by $1 million which saves us $50,000 in annual interest alone. And with improved cost controls, this is just a start. Our fiscal health is improving dramatically. Congratulations Somersett, we’re moving in the right direction.

West Park – Dog Park & Community Garden We had a great turnout at the resident volunteer event to help complete the Community Garden and the Large Dog Park. Volunteers moved 1,000 cubic feet of soil and picked up 5 tons of rocks using tractors, wheelbarrows, shovels, rakes, and lots of muscle. The Large Dog Park has been seeded with grass and will reopen in early June. The Community Garden will open on schedule in May. Thanks to all those who help get this park ready. It was great to see community participation. 4

Your SOA Board will continue to work diligently, thoughtfully, and respectfully for the benefit of all who live in Somersett or own property here. We look after your assessment dollars and protect your property value. We also wish to enhance your community, the infrastructure, the amenities, and the great sense of community. It’s a privilege to serve you.

Cheers!

SOA Board of Directors

GOLF TIP The Turn

By Stuart Smith – PGA Director of Golf

T

he word “turn” is used often in golf instruction. Most people think of turn as solely an around-the-body motion, such as when you turn around to say hi to someone or turn around to go back and lock the door. But we are upright beings with our spine near vertical so our rotation is, in fact, around. Let’s shift from walking to the posture of the golf swing. As we move our hips back and keep our shoulders relatively tall, our spine becomes tilted. Therefore, our golf swing should not only turn us around but also turn up on an inclined plane. I often tell my students that the backswing goes around and up if you rotate around your posture and around and down through the ball on the downswing. Allow your arms to be transported by this motion. I often see players using their arms to pull the club around them on the backswing, making it impossible to develop an efficient golf swing and achieve consistent ball flight. Allow your arms to elevate. Need help? Our professional staff is anxious to get you on your way to better golf. You won’t find a more experienced teaching crew in all of Reno. Give us a call at 787-1800, ext. 2.

Driving Range Expansion and Renovation We are excited to announce the expansion of the Country Club Driving Range.

...our golf swing should not only turn us around but also turn up on an inclined plane.

1. We will level the current hitting area and expand into the body of the driving range approximately +/-20 yards. 2. We will add drainage and irrigation where needed. 3. We will replace all turf with new sod rolls. All play (even drivers) MUST be from the mats. We are installing new golf tee receptacles in each mat for both left-handed and right-handed golfers. When on the North side of the driving range, we request that you utilize irons only. We will have the Indoor Arena open for warm-up as well as one temporary hitting cage in the chipping area. We know you will be pleased with the re-opening of the driving range on Tuesday, May 25. May schedule (subject to change): • May 1–2 & 3–9: North side open – irons only • May 10–16 & 17–23: South side and North side open – mats only • May 25: South side new turf range open – North Side open to Somersett residents

THE CLUB AT TOWN CENTER REMINDERS THE CLUB AT TOWN CENTER is open with Board-set guidelines in place to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. These measures conform with county and state mandated restrictions. We are counting on your cooperation to keep everyone safe and healthy. These restrictions are subject to change. Here are highlights of what to expect if you visit the Club:

City and county inspectors will be checking, and besides the obvious safety reasons for these measures, we risk violation notices and even getting shut down if we are not in compliance.

MASKS: Everyone at the Club at Town Center is required to wear a face covering, except for children 9 years old and under and people who cannot wear a face covering due to a medical condition or disability (in this case, face shields are strongly recommended). This requirement extends to all areas in the Club, including the Sports Court, Fitness Center and Aerobics Studio. SOCIAL DISTANCING: Please maintain six-foot social distancing at all times, even in the pools and on the pool decks. City and county inspectors will be checking, and besides the obvious safety reasons for these measures, we risk violation notices and even getting shut down if we are not in compliance. RESERVE YOUR SPOT: Members need to reserve a time slot to use the fitness area, fitness classes, the Lap Pool and the Tennis Courts. Space is limited. Reservations may be made through the MySomersett app (recommended) or over the phone (787-4500) up to 48 hours in advance. Please be considerate of other residents and only reserve time slots you will actually use! NO GUESTS, PLEASE: Due to restricted capacity, Club members may not bring guests to Club facilities or amenities, except for Canyon Nine Golf Course.

RSVP Policy Please remember to RSVP for programs by the deadline listed so we can ensure that enough supplies and staff are available. All event fees are due at time of reservation. Cancellations must be made 48 hours before an event to receive a refund. No refunds will be given for no-shows. Unless noted, all events are for residents only. If residents choose to bring a guest, event and guest fees apply.

Late Pick-Up Fee The Club will charge a late pick-up fee for any child not picked up within 15 minutes of a program’s end time, including Kids’ Corner. Following the 15-minute grace period, a $5 fee will be charged for every 10 minutes your child remains with us.

One little known but heartbreaking statistic

is that three times more pets are euthanized each year at veterinary clinics because their people cannot afford necessary treatment than are put down at animal shelters. It’s called “economic euthanasia,” and it’s a growing problem as the cost of veterinary care has increased in recent years. This was the inspiration for a new nonprofit clinic called Options Veterinary Care in Reno – the first of its kind in Northern Nevada. “If you view your pet as a member of the family, as more than two-thirds of Americans do, you can imagine how heartbreaking it would be to know that your pet needs veterinary care that you can’t afford.” said Denise Stevens, clinic director of Options, “For many senior citizens, whose pets may be their primary companion, this is a real problem. We see people in this very situation every day.” Options opened in December and it quickly became apparent that seniors, especially those on fixed incomes, were some of those most in need of an affordable, high-quality veterinary clinic like Options. Washoe County Human Services reports that 1 in 4 seniors in the county are moderately or highly isolated, making the companionship of a pet even more important to quality of life. One example involves a little Shih Tzu named Gypsy who started having trouble eating because of problems with her teeth. Gypsy’s person Della didn’t know where to turn. Della is retired and her husband passed away a few years ago. Her son

would love to help, but he’s dealing with medical bills resulting from his partner’s cancer treatment. He delivers meals to the home-bound and homeless in Sun Valley, and Della fills in when he’s unable to go. This little dog is the love of their lives. Gypsy got the treatment she so desperately needed at Options nonprofit clinic, thanks to the generosity of donors. Cleo is another case. She’s a sevenyear-old cat who’s not a fan of most people, except for Carol. It took her a while but Carol finally won over this shy cat by employing lots of love and patience. They’ve gotten very close. Carol is 73 years old and she is living on a very limited income, so when the cat began having trouble keeping her food down, Carol got really worried. That is, until she got connected with Options. The clinic did blood work and radiographs and provided needed treatment including dental care. A recent follow-up appointment showed Cleo had made a big improvement, which decreased Carol’s stress. Casey Renegade Thomson is a Bichon Frise who came to Options with cataracts and eye ulcers so severe that double enucleation – removal of both eyes – was required. His person Debbie had been able to take him regularly to her own private veterinarian to treat his diabetes. But her son was killed overseas in the line of duty a few years ago, and her health took a steep decline. Because of her own mounting medical costs, she couldn’t afford to get treatment for Casey Renegade Thomson’s eyes – until she learned about Options. “The community makes what we do possible,” Stevens said. “When people donate to Options, we put it to use immediately helping pets who would not otherwise get veterinary care.”

OCCUPATION: Pizzeria owners/operators. We couple world-class pizza with a social cause. Our mission is to create hope and meaning in the lives of people with disabilities and currently, 30 percent of our staff have developmental disabilities. Walter makes every pizza, every dough, and does all the prep. The recipes he has created have garnished acclaim from around the world. Judy runs the register, answers the phones, makes her famous salads, and does the bookkeeping. We are both onsite all hours to ensure that our consistency, quality, and customer service are world-class. We begin taking orders at 3 pm for pickup starting at 5 pm and usually sell out of dough by 5 or soon after, so it is best to call early. We are highly rated on YELP, called the “greatest little pizzeria in the country” by pizza legend Paulie Gee, owner of Paulie Gee’s pizzerias, and cited as the best New York pizza in the world by Norma Knepp, one of the most famous female pizza makers in the country. ORIGINALLY FROM: Walter is from New Jersey, just outside New York City, and Judy is from Alameda, California.

Walter & Judy GLOSHINSKI

FAMILY: Walter and Judy have no children but both spent much of their lives working with young people. Walter was a special education teacher for 25 years and created award-winning bakeries/pizzerias inside public schools training his students in skills that would maximize their chances at a meaningful life of work. Walter has five siblings and his mother is Italian. She and her family were world-class cooks, bringing all they knew from Italy to the United States. Walter learned much from them as well, as being in what many regard as the most intense food culture in the U.S. Judy was raised by a single mother with one sister. Her mother spoke five languages and was raised in Switzerland. Judy and Walter have been married for 40 years. WHY SOMERSETT? We learned of Del Webb (Sierra Canyon) from a friend. We liked the idea of a quiet community, and after seeing how ripe Reno was for New York-style pizza we moved here blindly five years ago. Moving (this time!) from a home in rural Ohio built in 1915, to a home in Nevada built in 2015 was not a difficult transition – lots of electrical outlets and the ability to shower and flush simultaneously has been a real treat! GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT: Walter’s greatest accomplishment has been to create Smiling With Hope Pizza. It is a 30-year dream-in-the-making. Seeing people with special needs have meaning and hope in their lives makes all the hard work worthwhile. For Judy, completing a Master’s Degree at 50 and working with students using her counseling credentials was a dream come true.

FAVORITE ACTIVITIES: Traveling, cooking, and eating at great restaurants. Walter enjoys listening to old radio shows, working out, watching off-the-beaten-path, pre-1960 movies, and recording his music in a studio he built inside the house. He no longer has a real band and now continues his music as a one-man-band with drums on his feet, guitar, harmonica on a rack, and singing all at once, which he learned from Wilbert Harrison, who had a #1 hit in the 1950s with the song Kansas City. Judy loves her hot tub, connecting with friends over the landline, and reading. She is also crazy about rescue cats and dogs and houseplants! SOMETHING PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU: Walter and Judy have traveled throughout the U.S. and the world with Walter’s music, which he calls Spontobeat (he spontaneously creates all his words and music as he goes along). He has no idea what he is going to sing or play. He has visions of stories that he walks into and they become as real as life itself. Many famous musicians played with his band over the years, including members from the bands of Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton and Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention. He also performed with many famous blues musicians, including Louisiana Red, Albert Collins, Lightnin’ Hopkins, and Champion Jack Dupree.

OCCUPATION: Retired in 2018 from a career in corporate human resources, where I worked for over 20 years in various industries, including manufacturing, medical and high-tech companies. ORIGINALLY FROM: Various cities in Northern California. Before moving to Reno, our last 10 years were spent in Gilroy, the Garlic Capital. TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY: Husband Mark and I recently celebrated our 36th wedding anniversary. Three grown daughters and one granddaughter, all living in the Bay Area.

Bev STENEHJEM

WHY SOMERSETT? We have a group of Bay Area friends who for years, had conspired to retire and move as a group to Reno where we could enjoy a better quality of life. The first time my husband Mark and I went house-hunting here, we drove around without any knowledge of the area – only exploring south Reno and decided that the dense housing and flat, barren landscape wasn’t our cup of tea. Determined to try again, the next visit we teamed up with realtor Simon Bradbury of Keller-Williams, who showed us homes for sale in Somersett. We were wowed by the natural beauty of the mountains, the layout of the neighborhoods, and the gorgeous homes. More importantly, since we did not know a soul here, we wanted a community where we could join in and meet new friends. The Town Center, The Grille, and the golf course offered ample opportunities to connect with others. After finding our dream home and, as we were unpacking, no less than four friendly neighbors rang our doorbell to welcome us. Soon after, we had the good fortune to meet a group of six amazing couples here in Somersett – self-described as the Beauties and the Beasts – with similar interests. We get together for frequent potlucks, volunteer work, and other fun outings. Moving to Somersett also afforded us great neighbors who look out for one another. I’ve met some terrific friends in Sierra Canyon, too, while volunteering for the homeless. Somersett is a world-class, friendly community! GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT: My wonderful family will always be my greatest accomplishment. Besides that, I might say promoting local businesses and community programs is something that I really enjoy. For many years, I belonged to the Chamber of Commerce in Morgan Hill and Gilroy (California), first acting as a liaison for the company I worked for and later, as a volunteer “ambassador” for the small mom and pop stores. I was the author of a weekly wine column, Bev’s Wine Buzz, for three local newspapers, writing about and promoting the region’s wineries. Arcadia Publishing contacted me and asked if I would write a historical photo book of the wineries. I spent a year researching and interviewing the winery owners, digging deep

into their family histories, and pouring over old photographs. The Wineries of Santa Clara Valley was published in 2015, helping to bring some fresh attention to the outstanding wineries of the area. Through this experience, I learned that it was the people that I enjoyed writing about and promoting most of all. After moving to Somersett in August of 2019, I jumped in, feet first, and joined everything that came my way. I joined Nevada Wines and Vines, a local wine association, and began writing for a local publication about Reno’s wine and spirits scene until COVID hit and businesses were shuttered. At the same time, I joined the Republican Women of Reno and am now on the board as their recording secretary. I also joined the Washoe County Republican Party’s communication team. I have coordinated several meet-and-greets for local candidates and enjoy getting the word out about local issues. This past summer, I had the honor of helping coordinate two car parades for Reno/Sparks law enforcement. Like other residents here, I discovered the fantastic array of backyard birds in Somersett – and have become an avid bird watcher. Up to 10 different species visit my yard daily. So, of course, I joined the Lahontan Audubon Society here in Reno. In honor of the wonderful raptors here, I invited a wildlife expert and her two birds of prey (a red-tailed hawk and a falcon) to my home where she made a lively presentation to our friends and neighbors.

FAVORITE ACTIVITIES: Walking the beautiful trails of Somersett and surrounding parks, exploring all the fantastic dining options that Reno has to offer, taking beginner golf lessons at the country club. I also enjoy applying hair tinsel for folks who want to add a little sparkle to their hair. Most of all, I enjoy get-togethers with the Beauties! SOMETHING PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU: I play the ukulele and am in a girl band, called the Wicked Wahinis, with three other Beauties. 25

Parents may assist their child out of the water in the catch pool if necessary, but they cannot stand in front of the slide to catch their child. Parents may wait at the steps if needed.

No glass containers on the pool deck, please! Glass bottles and glass containers of any kind are not permitted on the pool deck, for very good reason. If the glass should break, barefooted pool-goers and those broken shards are a dangerous combination. If pieces of broken glass should fall into the pool itself, it’s a HUGE problem: • First, when glass falls into water it often becomes very hard to spot. If a swimmer accidentally ingests a sliver, brushes against glass debris or steps on it, a severe injury could occur. • If broken glass is pulled into the pool’s filtration system, it could cause severe damage. • Finally, if glass shards should fall into the pool, for safety’s sake we would have shut the pool down, drain the water and carefully vacuum the bottom and sides, then re-fill it with water and balance the chemicals. During this process, the pool would be closed for up to a week. On top of that, there is the extra expense involved in the cleanup, including $1,000 cost to refill the pool with water. So, let’s have a wonderful summer enjoying our beautiful pools – and please leave those glass containers at home!

From the time staff hears thunder or sees lightning, the pool will be cleared for 30 minutes. In the case of lightning, the pool deck must be cleared due to the danger of lightning strikes.

If the weather improves, then the pool will reopen. Pool closing and/or opening times will be placed on the Golf Hut window, concierge desk and Facebook. Rain passes will be issued in the case of inclement weather if the guest signed in less than one hour prior to closing time.
