Tips from the Country Club Stuart Smith – PGA Director of Golf

A

Putting

s we head into Winter and temperatures prevent many of us from heading out to the golf course it is a great time to work on some easy putting fundamentals in the comfort of our homes. I recommend a few simple putting fundamentals—ball placed slightly left of center (right handers), eyes over ball and equal back equal through with the putter head. Remember the motion of the putter includes shoulders, arms, hands, putter grip and putter head all working at the same tempo. Putting is not just a hands activity if you are striving for consistency. PGA and LPGA Tour players have tempos of 62–72 beats per minute regardless of the length of putt they face.

Community Driving Range Hours

Tuesday through Sunday; Closed Mondays November from 8:30 am–5 pm December from 10 am–4 pm Somersett Residents are encouraged to utilize the driving range at the Country Club. With the new SOA/Country Club agreement range usage is complimentary. Please check-in with the range attendant located at the driving range, provide identification as a resident and sign the usage sheet. Juniors MUST be accompanied by an adult. Complimentary range usage will be offered on the cushioned mat located at the North side of the driving range only. We will provide shuttle service every 20 minutes during operating hours (provided above) May through October. Access to the turf range, putting green and chipping green is available for a cost of a $10 per person per day fee payable at the golf shop prior to usage. Juniors again must be accompanied by an adult. Men, please remember our simple dress code of no denim, no jogging suits, collared golf shirts and caps worn forward at all times. For the ladies no denim, no jogging suits, no spaghetti strapped tops, bare midriffs, short shorts. Proper footwear such as golf shoes or tennis shoes is required.

Each resident may book a foursome of players at a rate of $65 per player (in season) and $40 per player (off season November–March). This includes green fee, driving range usage and golf cart. We take tee times for residents three days in advance at 787-1800, ext 2. Men, please remember our simple dress code of no denim, collared golf shirts and caps worn forward at all times. Bocce Ball Court Hours

Tuesday through Sunday; Closed Mondays November from 8 am to 5 pm* December from 10 am to 4 pm* *May play until dusk if in possession of own bocce balls For those interested in playing bocce please note there is a grooming rake/brush located on the outside wall of the golf shop. Bocce balls and scoreboards may be checked out from the golf shop staff during operating hours.

Winter/Snow Season We kindly ask that you refrain from winter activities on both golf courses during the winter season. We do not allow tubing, tobogganing, sledding, saucering, skiing, snowboarding, etc. on either golf course in the winter. Damage caused by this activity becomes apparent in the Spring and playing conditions are greatly sacrificed. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Watercolor Class

Wednesdays, November 4 through December 2, 10 am–1 pm in the Canyon View Room (Please Note that Wednesday, November 25 there will be no class due to Thanksgiving) $59/resident per month session plus $20 material fee payable directly to Eva or bring your own RSVP by Friday, October 30 8 participants min; 20 max In this workshop, instructor Eva Nichols will go over the basics of watercolor painting using both traditional and nontraditional methodology. No previous painting experience or drawing skills are necessary. The emphasis is to create an environment in which students feel free to play and experiment with colors and methods to create luminous watercolors. Already have experience? This class will help you discover your own painting style while learning about the exciting and versatile possibilities of watercolor painting. Explore wetinto-wet, dry brushing, color changes, values, glazing, lost and found edges and negative painting techniques while moving closer to achieving your personal artistic goals. Cancellations must be made 48 hours before an event to receive a refund. No refunds will be given for no-shows. Unless noted, all events are for residents only. If residents choose to bring a guest, event and guest fees apply.

Late Pick-Up Fee The Club will charge a late pick-up fee for any child not picked up within 15 minutes of a program’s end time, including Kids’ Corner. Following the 15-minute grace period, a $5 fee will be charged for every 10 minutes your child remains with us.

Guest Fees: $10 adult; $8 junior Members are allowed to bring up to six guests at one time for a maximum of ten visits per guest. Members must accompany guests at all times. 7

Holiday Etiquette

T

he holidays can be memorable in a good kind of way, or not so much. To keep things enjoyable, here are a few tips. Your calendar will no doubt be filled with parties and other obligations, so make an effort to arrive at your destination at a respectful time. Don’t show up more than 15 minutes after the start time, stay until the music is over, or be super early. It’s imperative to RSVP, don’t bring uninvited guests, and do come bearing a host/ hostess gift (this gesture speaks volumes about your appreciation). Pace yourself. Have a little something nutritious about a half hour before, and think about limiting alcohol. I like the two-drink rule, sip water or club soda between cocktails. Offer to help with clean up or with refreshing the ice bucket so the host can enjoy the party too. Put your phone on silent and mingle! Re-gifting can be perplexing. If it’s a bottle of wine, picture frame, candle, or something you absolutely won’t use, that’s okay. Remember, though, the risk you run of hurting a family member and embarrassing yourself may be too great compared to offering gifts you don’t want. A final note on that, accept a gift with grace and appreciation. The gifter spent the time, money and thought to get something special for you. Always follow up with a handwritten thank you card, it’s like giving a gift in return. Etiquette and manners are essential for every occasion; practice politeness!

Cure-all, Spiced-up Red Lentil & Vegetable Soup Provided by Rick Rucker

Ingredients

The beauty of this soup, besides the blending of the flavors and the aroma of the spices, is you can add more of your favorite vegetables and less of others. For instance kale, which has a very good “tooth” (chef talk for texture), can be used instead of the chard.

In large stew pot, over medium heat, sauté onions in olive oil until soft. Add garlic and ginger and stir until all is blended and aromatic. Add celery and carrots and all spices, stirring and cooking, again, until you can smell the spices releasing, about two minutes. Add canned tomatoes, vegetable broth and potatoes and cook over medium-high heat for 30 minutes. Reduce heat to medium low and add lentils, chard and green beans. Continue cooking for another 20 minutes. Add tofu, stir gently and cook for another 10 minutes. Serve as is, nothing else is needed, and be happy and well.

Somersett Year End Review

S

omersett is again showing its true beauty as our trees and bushes turn into fall colors. I always marvel at the color our landscaping produces after living in California and Texas (neither of which have four seasons). We are so fortunate that our plants love to give us the reds, oranges and yellows of fall! It is almost a year since the current board took office. Over that time we have added 133 families to our rolls. Somersett now has 2,718 assessment paying units, or approximately 8,000 people, and there are over 100 homes under construction. At this rate, we anticipate Somersett will be close to build out around 2020. It is amazing the number of projects and issues which grab our attention and require considerable thought and effort. In this issue, we would like to bring to your attention all the projects closed this year:

We received a reimbursement for $64,779 from insurance which helped cover legal fees after the $100,000 deductible. s 4HE PIPELINE FROM THE 3OMERSETT 'OLF #OURSE TO THE #ANYON POND IS COMPLETE WHICH will ensure that the Association has access to well water for Canyon 9 when the Truckee River is dry. s )N ADDITION WATER CONSERVATION TRIALS AND PROJECTS HAVE SAVED WELL IN EXCESS OF THE voluntary reduction requested by TMWA. s 7EST 0ARK #OMMITTEE WAS FORMED TO PROVIDE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE PARK SCHEDULED to begin construction in 2017. This committee has divided into three sub-committees focused on Community Garden, Children’s Play Area, and Dog Park. We again remind all residents that speeding is a significant issue in Somersett and Sierra Canyon. The Association is asking the City of Reno to patrol the area more often. s #OMMUNICATIONS WITH HOMEOWNERS HAVE INCREASED WITH THE LAUNCHING OF THE "OARD Spotlight, Letters from the Secretary, and Homeowner Spotlights. In the near future, the Communications Committee will launch a new front-end website which will not require a log-in and provide timely news and information to homeowners. s &IVE NEW MANAGEMENT STAFF MEMBERS HAVE JOINED 3OMERSETT OVER THE PAST YEAR —Callie Burgard, Community Relations Director —Eric Maass, Youth Program Director —Cassie Wilson, Sports, Fitness & Wellness Director —Ryan Dominguez, Assistant Community Manager —Diane Pollock, Club at Town Center Manager The Board continues to review staffing to insure exceptional service to the Somersett community. Currently, the Board is finalizing goals and objectives for 2016 which is chock-full of projects which address many of the concerns expressed by homeowners at Board and committee meetings. We will publish those in the next Secretary’s Letter. A couple reminders to dog owners—dogs must be leashed when outside of a homeowner’s property. If dogs are not leashed, Animal Control will be called. And please pick up after your dogs. It is disgusting and disheartening to take a walk along our streets and see waste over and over again. FAVORITE ACTIVITIES: Enjoying Sandy’s gourmet dinners with family and friends. Running, biking, skiing, hiking and working out at the Club at Town Center. Getting our four sons, daughters-in-law/ girlfriends and three grandchildren together for holidays and special occasions. WHY SOMERSETT: I grew up in the small railroad town of Carlin, Nevada, population of less than 2000. By the time I was 12, I knew everyone in town and they knew me. Sandra and I attended my school reunion this summer, where every living graduate of Carlin High, since 1925, was invited. Over the past 46 years I have lived in various homes and neighborhoods throughout the Truckee Meadows. Somersett and my neighborhood on Castlehawk Court seem the closest to having the small town atmosphere where I find myself most comfortable.

Esther Walters

OCCUPATION: Legal secretary for 12 years. I left the law firm to help my mother with her cocktail lounge and apartments when they discovered she had cancer. After losing my mom and that experience, I headed for the hills (Truckee). There, I worked for Tahoe Forest Hospital and later at the Truckee Donner Chamber of Commerce Welcome Center. YEARS IN RENO: I just celebrated my first year in Reno. Sold and left my house in Truckee at the end of 2014. ORIGINALLY FROM: My mom’s parents came from Greece. They migrated to this country, not through Ellis Island, but Boston! The family name of Pantelekas was changed to Pappas. I’m also Croatian. My family on my dad’s side came to America from the Croatian coast. I’m a Californiaborn girl from the East Bay. GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENTS: My greatest accomplishment is having and raising my two daughters and my son. I love being a mother and now a grandmother. My second greatest accomplishment was going to school to become a legal secretary and working for a civil law firm. My third accomplishment was quitting smoking at 30 and running my first mile. LAST BOOK READ: Right now I’m reading “Churchill’s Secret Agent”. I seem to migrate to World War II books and movies.

FAVORITE ACTIVITIES: Starting every day dancing. The day just seems to go better. Kidnapping my son’s black lab while he and his wife are at work and taking her to the dog park. Learning to play pool at Sierra Canyon (thank you Ron) and actually winning a tournament! Acting in small plays. I started that right after my husband died. I also have a part in Sierra Canyon’s Murder Mystery. I just finished doing Donner Party Hikes. Hiking is one of my favorite things to do, and I always finish the season being a herder for one of their hikes. This year it was Roller Pass and Mt. Judah combined. Donner Summit is my favorite place to hike. WHY SOMERSETT: I had my home in Truckee since 1992. My biggest fear was selling my house and moving into a neighborhood where no one knew each other. I had visions of me sitting in my house all alone with no life. Those who know me, know how ridiculous that is. I knew I had to live in a community that was close knit. I had my eye on Sierra Canyon for a very long time. They had an activity/club calendar that offered many things for me to do to keep busy plus meet new people. It was the right choice and it has been wonderful. I love everyone that lives there. They welcomed me from the start, and I feel as if I have known them for a very long time. Even though I miss living in the tree line and my animals on my property, I know I made the right move to Sierra Canyon.

Gail Yackovich

OCCUPATION: Retired (my past years were spent in the procurement field of various companies: engineering firms (C.E. Lummus, Richardson Scale, Flightmatic Inc.) and Wella U.S.A. (hair care products). YEARS IN RENO: 10 years. I’m originally from Clifton, NJ (20 minutes west of NYC, near Giant’s stadium). GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENTS: My daughters, Suzanne and Patricia, both college graduates. Suzanne works in realty at Pacific Union, Squaw Valley in Olympic Valley, CA. Patty held two degrees, one in Mechanical Engineering, worked for Bechtel Engineering in Maryland and one in Equine Science. And lastly, getting through the recession here and hanging onto the house. FAVORITE ACTIVITIES: Skiing, swimming, biking, traveling, entertaining, reading, sewing and crocheting. LAST BOOK READ: “Seal of God” by Chad Williams, a retired U.S. Navy Seal. I have also enjoyed the entire Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon and many of the Navy Seal autobiographies (one my favorites was “Fearless” by Eric Blehm).

WHY SOMERSETT: My husband Ed and I moved here in 2015 to be close to our daughter Suzanne who lives in Truckee, CA. We had always planned to move to a place halfway between her and her sister. In 1999, our daughter Patty, who was living in Colorado, had passed in her sleep. I had just spoken to her the previous Friday night. We spent the summers of 2002 and 2004 with Suzanne in Truckee and in 2004 were ready to move out here. Suzanne was very influential in our decision to live in Somersett. She knew the area and the amenities would be beneficial to us both, not to mention the proximity to her, ski resorts and medical care. We both came to love our clean and quiet location, and good neighbors. Since my husband’s passing my neighbors have continued to look after me, checking in and inviting me to their family events. My daughter Suzanne has been particularly supportive, even with her busy schedule she is always there for me. I have also returned to skiing after a 14 year hiatus and have enjoyed the last four seasons at Squaw with a weekday pass. In New Jersey, we were members of the High Life Ski Club and traveled to many ski resorts, both in Europe and out here in the West. After 30 years of skiing, it’s hard to give it up so I’m alive again and enjoying it immensely.

S

omersett offers its challenges to bicyclists. The terrain, the roundabouts, and sometimes the drivers who fantasize they are in Monte Carlo. Riding a bicycle can be both a joyful and stressful experience framed by the safety of your equipment, the terrain and environment, and those with whom you share the road. If you are a responsible biker with a bike in good repair, and are vigilant in your biking surroundings, your joy will outweigh the stress of sharing the road with pedestrians, cars, trucks and buses. When you mount your bicycle and ride on Reno streets, you are bound to obey both Nevada state law and the Reno Municipal Code. Your bike is considered a vehicle, and you, as rider, must comply with the same traffic laws as if driving a car. Ride on the far right side of the road, or in the bike lanes where painted; use hand signals to turn right or left, or to re-enter the road after a stop; do not allow anyone to ride with you on your bicycle made for one; ride no more than two abreast on highways, unless you are on a bike path; do not ride on sidewalks; always yield to pedestrians, and exercise due care when passing a standing vehicle, or one traveling in the same direction. Tickets for moving violations start at $115.00. It is not unusual to see a biker speeding on the steep Somersett hills. Fun for the rider, no doubt, but, when the speed limit is 25 miles an hour, that biker is breaking the law, and could be fined. When riding at night, your bike must be equipped with a lamp on the front, which emits a white light visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the front, and a red reflector on the back, visible from 50–300 feet to the rear. Reflective material is also required on both sides of the bike that is visible for 600 feet. Balancing your bicycle for an exhilarating ride, and balancing your duty to comply with the rules of the road will ensure your safe travels, and the safety of those around you. Autumn weather and scenery make for good bike rides. Get on your bike, have fun, and enjoy the neighborhood roads while riding responsibly.

WINTER Adult Spa The winter spa will open for use within the hours of 8 am to 8 pm, and 8 am to 7 pm on Sundays. Usage is strictly for adults only; no one under the age of 18 will be allowed on the pool deck. Please check in at the concierge desk to use the spa. WINTER SPA RULES 1. The winter spa adjacent to the play pool is for adults (18+) only. 2. Assessment Reminder Assessments are due on the first of each month and are overdue if not paid by the 30th of the month. A late fee of $25 will be posted to accounts not paid by the 30th of the month. Accounts 60 days past due will lose clubhouse and/or Canyon Nine privileges. Assessment Payments Submitted Online (via Paylease) Did you know you can pay your monthly assessments online from the FirstService Residential website? Please be aware that payments submitted online go through a third party payment processing company called Paylease. Payments submitted through Paylease will, and typically do, take up to three business days to be credited to your assessment account. Please keep this information in mind for last minute assessment payments as payments received after the 30th are subject to a $25 late fee. Paylease does charge a fee for its service, and you can pay a larger fee to have the payment posted within one business day. Rules & Regulations Spotlights HOLIDAY DECORATIONS Holiday decorations may be installed up to 10 days before a holiday, and must be taken down within 10 days after the holiday, with the exception of the December Holidays. December decorations may be installed at Thanksgiving and must be removed by January 31. The Association and Commercial buildings and Association common areas are excluded from this provision.

SNOW REMOVAL & STREET SWEEPING Snow removal and street sweeping within the sub-associations of the Village and the Vue are the responsibility of the sub-associations. Other private streets within the Association will be snow plowed when there is an accumulation of 3 inches on the street. Streets will be swept within a reasonable time frame following the last snow fall to clear the streets of sand and debris. For snow removal and sweeping issues on City owned streets, call Reno Direct at 334-2099. Homeowners are responsible for maintaining the sidewalks adjacent to their property. The Association will plow the common area pathways/sidewalks along the three major parkways (Somersett, Del Webb and Somersett Ridge) if there is still snow on the walkways within 48 hours after the end of snow fall.

Winterization for Landscapes & Gardens By John P. Pruyn, High West Landscape Architects

C

old weather is coming. Believe it! It is predicted that a warmer/ wetter than normal winter is possibly coming to our high desert area and as landscape professionals we must be prepared for heavy snow (sierra cement) that can strip branches from trees and shrubs, cause frost heave, and freeze irrigation systems, generally causing havoc in the garden. The first step to preparing plants for winter is the process of cutting back on irrigation in the fall to encourage ‘hardening off’ of ornamental plant material. 4HIS SHOULD START IN 3EPTEMBER REDUCE WATERING TO ABOUT OF YOUR NORMAL application. In October and November, water deeply a couple of times a week (if we are not getting rain or snow) and never let the garden completely dry out. One needs to get prepared for winter by first doing a proper cleanup of the garden—dead heading plants, removing annuals, cutting back perennials, adding humus or compost and mulching heavily. Mulch at least 3 inches, and 5 inches is even better with shredded bark, shredded leaves, clean straw or pine needles. Be sure to keep mulch about 6 inches from the trunk or stem of plants. Depending on your area, very windblown areas may not hold some types of mulch, and you may need to use inorganic mulches such as rock mulch. The point is to cover and insulate the root structure, soil and microbes from drying out and being exposed. It is fine for soil to freeze, quite another for it to dry out and be exposed to drought. Rapid change in temperatures, from day to night and a lack of cloud cover, can cause temperatures to drop below minimal survival point for ornamentals that may be close to their hardiness points. This is especially important for younger trees that may develop sun scab, cracking along the unprotected trunk. Using watered down white latex paint is good protection from the low angle sun, but even better is to use tree wrap to protect the bark from the sun and hungry porcupines, rabbits and voles that will eat the bark of trees during the winter months. Desiccating winds are a major problem in our area and should be watched carefully for damage to plants, especially during extended periods of time without precipitation. Check trees and shrubs at the base of the plant every two weeks during dry periods. If watering is required, water when the temperature is above 40 degrees to ensure that it penetrates the soil before the temperature drops in the late afternoon and can freeze. Fall is an excellent time to maintain your lawn. Cut it no closer than 2â€? and fertilize with bio-sol fertilizer, in November and top dress with a light layer of humus, about 1/8â€?. Voles, which are a problem in our area, are said to have an aversion to Bio-sol fertilizer, so it may be helpful to keep them from our lawn during the winter. Fall is also a great time to aerate lawns as the golf courses do, prior to topping with humus. Wrap trees and shrubs with tree wrap tape, I prefer the ½â€? width or wider so that there are no blow outs during the winter and make sure to use a 3â€? stake to secure trees in high snow areas. In warmer areas, prepare your vegetable garden with row cover and row cover hoops to extend your growing into the fall and in some areas well into the winter. Finally, it is a good idea to run drip systems through a couple extra cycles shortly before shutting down systems for the winter. When temperatures start to drop below freezing at night, turn off and drain irrigation systems, but that is another article.
