GOLF TIP:

The Sand Shot

By Stuart Smith—PGA Director of Golf

O

ne of the most daunting shots in the game is the sand shot. I hope that the few tips I provide along with a little practice will give you a newfound hope in becoming more proficient out of the sand.

1) The sand wedge is weighted and designed to lift the ball out of the bunker. The first thing to remember is that you do not have to help the ball up and out.

2) When practicing out of the bunker, draw a box around the ball – about the size of a normal divot – approximately 4-by-6 inches. The object is to take your swing and splash the sand out of the box. The visual of splashing is to encourage a relaxed motion, allowing the club to do most of the work. It is OK to let the clubhead to surpass the hands through the ball on this particular shot. Your wrists should hinge and unhinge. Splashing encourages this.

3) Finish facing the target with your weight on your left foot. Your weight can stay on your lead foot at all times during the bunker shot, which leads to a more downward strike. The most

common mistake is to finish on your back foot or flat-footed. When you try to lift the ball with just your arms this is often the result. Remember, a splashing of the sand and weight on your lead foot at impact will get the majority of your shots out of the bunker.

PRIORITY: 1. Out of the bunker 2. On the green 3. Close to the hole 4. In the hole ☺

Practice, practice, practice: The county club’s PGA golf staff has over 35 years of combined experience and is available to take your game to the next level. Why venture out for golf lessons when you can improve your game right here in your back yard? Rates are between $60–$80 per hour. We CAN take your game to the next level! Call us at 787-1800, ext. 2.

training and more. The Healing Center attracts over 300 visits monthly from High Fives athletes and community members. B.A.S.I.C.S. The B.A.S.I.C.S. (Being Aware Safe In Critical Situations) program was created as a way to reach young athletes to promote smart decision-making in the mountains. Each year we develop a documentary highlighting one safety topic. The documentary is available free online and is toured around the country for live presentations at schools and for industry professionals. Since its establishment in 2010, the B.A.S.I.C.S. program has reached over 210,000 young athletes with these films: “Five Critical Mistakes (2011),’’ “Avalanche Awareness” “#HelmetsAreCool,” “#KnowYourPark,” “CHOICES,” and “5 Critical Mistakes (2016).” Military to the Mountains Military to the Mountains was created following the success achieved by veteran Marine Corporal Jacob Schick while skiing at Squaw Valley during the 20142015 winter season. The next year, the program grew to include 10 injured U.S. military veterans. Now, the program sees 22 veterans annually. Working directly with Dallas-based Adaptive Training Foundation and the City of Reno Adaptive Program, injured veterans undergo intensive training prior to visiting Squaw Valley. Once they arrive in the mountains, they receive adaptive ski lessons with Achieve Tahoe.

Trey Humphrey In late 2004,

I decided I was done going to college and felt a strong pull towards military service. I dropped out of the University of Nevada-Reno and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in April of 2005. My first day in boot camp, I immediately regretted my decision, but as the weeks went by, I realized I was where I belonged and put my whole effort into becoming a U.S. Marine. After graduation, I was sent to the School of Infantry aboard Camp Pendleton in Southern California, where I learned basic military tactics. From there I was assigned to Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion 5th Marines and two months later, in December of 2006, I was forward deployed to Zaidon, Iraq, a large farming community on the outskirts of Fallujah. It wasn’t long after that I got my first taste of combat and realized I enjoyed the adrenaline dump associated with it. I made it home safely and moved up the ranks to a position of leadership with a team of Marines behind me. I deployed again to Fallujah, Iraq, several months later and then headed to Okinawa, Japan, on my first non-combat deployment. There I was able to train with multiple foreign militaries while continuously honing my skills as a leader. After I returned to the States, I had an opportunity to fill a school slot as a combat instructor at the Mountain Warfare Training Center in Bridgeport, Calif., a tiny military base smack dab in the middle of the Sierra Nevada. As I was preparing for

22

this transition, my unit was tasked with deploying to Afghanistan and I was given the option of returning to combat or staying home and moving into a trainer role. I chose to once more get back in the fight and left for Sangin, Afghanistan, in September of 2010. A fertile farming valley, fed by the Helmand River and surrounded by snow-covered peaks, Sangin felt strangely familiar to me. The fighting there was much more intense than anything I had previously experienced and we had a difficult time navigating the area which was peppered with antipersonnel improvised explosive devices (IEDs). On Nov. 9, 2010, I woke up my squad and we geared up to help with the evacuation of a Marine who had triggered one of these IEDs that shattered his foot. We hustled out of our patrol base about a half mile and jumped into the middle of a gunfight. Once I understood what was happening, I was able to secure passage for the wounded Marine by redirecting the enemy’s attention towards me and my squad. As I was attempting to maneuver out of an empty irrigation canal, I stepped on the top of the berm and felt my body go suddenly airborne. My first thought was, “One of my guys just triggered an IED.” As the dust settled, I came to realize that it was me. I looked down and saw my right leg, just above the boot, was gone. My left leg

Set goals, no matter how small, and every looked even worse as the blast split my shin open from ankle to knee. Luckily, as Marines, we are fully prepared to handle this type of injury and I gave my life over to the young men I had spent countless hours training with. Within 28 minutes they had stemmed the bleeding, hauled my body over a half-mile, and got me onto a helicopter, where I was put into a medically-induced coma. What happened after that? Two weeks later I woke up at a military hospital in Bethesda, Md., just in time to watch Nevada football upset Boise State. It took several days for doctors to explain the extent of my injuries and I spent the next two months in and out of surgical rooms. By January 2011, I was stable enough to transfer to Balboa Naval Hospital where I would learn to walk again. What advice would you offer for someone who has suffered a life-altering injury? Set goals, no matter how small, and every day strive to get a win. One of my first goals was to relearn to feed myself again, which took about a week, and once I did it for the first time, I celebrated, as if I had just won a national championship. A few weeks later, I was setting bigger and bigger goals and racking up wins. Eventually, I hit the point where I felt I could handle anything thrown my way. Why Somersett? Chuck Bluth established a non-profit to build handicap accessible homes for critically wounded veterans in the Northern Nevada area. Somehow, he found me and offered me a great home across from the 16th tee box. In May of 2013, the house was completed and I moved in. I couldn’t have asked for a better community of neighbors and place to raise my two sons. How did you end up at High Fives? (Trey is the Foundation Manager) I used skiing to drive most of my recovery goals and once I moved back to Reno, I began volunteering for Achieve Tahoe at Alpine Meadows to help others like me. One of the camps I volunteered for was a Paralympic talent identification camp, hosted by High Fives, in conjunction with Achieve Tahoe. There, I met Roy Tuscany and learned about his story overcoming his own injury and we struck up a friendship. I then was asked to

day strive to get a win.

participate in the High Fives Military to the Mountain program (M2M). For nine weeks I trained with the City of Reno Adaptive and Double Diamond Fitness trainers and other local veterans. In the 10th week, we met up with a crew of 14 veterans from Dallas’ Adaptive Training Foundation and were treated to a week of skiing and snowboarding at Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows. After graduating this program, I basically begged Roy for a job, to which he responded by telling me to pound sand and he’d only consider it after I completed a college degree. So, I did and he stayed true to his word. Favorite activities: Skiing, mountain biking, camping, supporting the Pack and golf! Something people might be surprised to know about you: I hold a national title in Para-Alpine Slalom Skiing.
