The attendant will check with you every 15 minutes for transport back to the Ridgefield Trail parking lot. Residents may access the putting green and chipping/pitching area in addition to the driving range for $15.
We ask that while playing the country club golf course or the Canyon Nine, please respect private property and refrain from entering backyards to retrieve golf balls.
Chipping vs. Pitching
C 6
hipping is when the ball flies less in the air than it rolls. Yes, this is a rolling shot. Your most forgiving play if the situation allows is a rolling shot or chip shot, preferably used with a 6, 7 or 8 iron. This is the simplest stroke next to putting. Keep your weight forward and hands ahead with ball position off your back big toe. Keep your eyes over the ball and equal back equal through. Pitching should ideally be practiced with your sand wedge. The sand wedge has 56 degrees of loft while a modern pitching wedge has only 45 to 47 degrees of loft. In golf, that’s a big difference. By definition, the pitch shot is one that flies a greater distance in the air than it rolls on the green. This is a very necessary shot for better scoring on the Canyon Nine and the country club course here at Somersett. This shot is similar to the full swing; however, the best short game players in the world allow the club to release downward to the ball prior to rotating their shoulders and shifting their weight – opposite of the full swing.

Back to School – Planning For The Future
By Stephens & Edwards, LLP
“An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” —Benjamin Franklin September is here, summer vacation is over and children and parents are adjusting to a new school year. The time between kindergarten and college moves quickly, and without some forethought and planning the cost of funding higher education can be a stressful event. Not all children will be college bound, nevertheless, having a plan in place will make all post high school possibilities more accessible for your graduate. It may be impossible of some families to set aside any money for college. For those parents, encouraging their children to do their best in school, and acquiring knowledge about accessing financial aid and college scholarships will be essential in order to provide a college opportunity. School counselors and college admissions departments offer reliable and current aid and scholarship information specific to the needs and special interests of a student. The internet has also opened up an endless source of information for researching schools and colleges, not to mention online educational programs that eliminate the expense of travel and campus room and board. Parents and grandparents who can afford to save a portion of their income for post high school educational opportunities can purchase savings bonds, or fund Coverdell educational savings accounts, Uniform Gift to Minors Act/Uniform Transfer to Minors Act custodial accounts, IRS 529 qualified tuition programs, or can simply earmark savings for a child in a personal bank account, money market account or mutual fund. In order to decide which funding plan is best for you, enlist the expertise of a financial planner or knowledgeable lawyer to learn about the tax benefits, risks and flexibility of each type of savings plan.

Personal Training
Personal training is a great way to get personalized routines designed to increase your performance and fitness results. And if you’re new to the gym or coming back after some time off, our personal trainers can help you get back into shape safely with faster results. Please check out the sports tab of our website for personal training specials and tips. The Club at Town Center has a great fitness tool to track personal achievements. Fitassess.com is a web-based fitness assessment program that gives personal trainers the tools to conduct a complete physical assessment for their clients. Tests include BMI, blood pressure, body fat analysis, body measurements, cardiovascular fitness, strength, flexibility and muscular endurance. The program compiles these results for a ranking that is compared to national averages, and it also provides a number for a body’s fitness age. This information is useful for determining a starting point and making it easy to set goals. It’s also a means of tracking your overall improvement, which boosts motivation and keeps you focused on your training. For more information or to set up your physical assessment session, please speak to any of our personal trainers.

The adult spa adjacent to the lap pool is for adults (18+) only. Children 12 years of age or younger who wish to use the family spa must be supervised by an adult. Children under 12 years of age should not use the spa for more than 10 consecutive minutes. Extended exposure to hot water or vapors may be detrimental to the health of elderly persons and persons with heart conditions, diabetes or high or low blood pressure. People with skin, ear, genital or other body infections, open sores or wounds should not use the hot tub because of the possibility of spreading infection. Parents are to warn children not to allow water in their mouths as this can cause infection and illness. The heat of the hot tub water speeds up the effects of alcohol and can cause sleepiness, dizziness and unconsciousness. Horse playing, splashing and swimming are not permitted in the spas. The family spa will close daily from 2–2:15 pm for backwashing and refilling.

inter is knocking on our doorstep – cooler temperatures, brisk winds, trees poised to change colors. Summer was certainly way too short! Another source of change comes within your Sierra Canyon Association and the new budget for 2014. What that means to you is another year of providing the lifestyle you know and love here at Sierra Canyon by Del Webb! Each year the budget continues to end in the black, thanks to diligent tracking of each line item to assure we make our targeted numbers and goals. The coming year will be no different, and I think everybody will be able to relax knowing our Association’s board treasurer and staff is committed to working once again with our management to not only make budget but to exceed expectations both as an association and a community. There are always unknown variables within any budget, but the key is ensuring that we tightly manage the budget and keep a close eye on everything. Our reserves continue to be over 100% funded, and I’m happy to report that Sierra Canyon is very solvent in its financial status. Within next year’s budget, we will continue to make sure our Association’s assets are protected and that we continue to enhance our community in terms of landscaping, general maintenance, resident programming and additional amenities. Speaking of enhancement, I hope you’ve noticed the many landscape projects we have completed around Sierra Canyon – several new trees planted along the asphalt pathways, removal of grass behind the Lodge, which saves the Association money in water bills, new plants within the islands around the lodge, and more. Thank you all for your patience as we have finally completed the installation of a new pool deck around our pool! These are just a few examples of improvements we have made and will continue to make to maintain and enhance Sierra Canyon’s common elements. From the Association staff and management company to our Board of Directors and our many, many volunteers, we all work hard to make this a wonderful place to live. I’m so pleased that the result of all that effort is so evident. As we move closer to beginning another year at Sierra Canyon, please continue to support and volunteer in all aspects of our great community.

It’s summer and there is a sense of new beginnings. It may be a good time to evaluate your investment program and seek a fresh change or modify your current strategy. Has your risk tolerance changed? You may need to adjust your investments to any changes in your personal goals and risk tolerance. Maybe you are paralyzed by fear that the markets have gone up and are due for a correction. There are ways to address changes in your risk tolerance and still achieve your return objective. Are you in balance? It may be time to reassess your asset allocation due to the recent market fluctuation. It can be surprisingly easy to become overweight in one asset that becomes overbought, overpriced with a poor risk/reward potential. Conversely, it is just as easy to miss the oversold, underpriced asset with better growth potential if you don’t rebalance regularly. Are your income needs changing? If you are planning to retire shortly, there are rollover options you will need to consider. If you are already retired, there are options available you may not be aware of that will help meet your income needs based upon your individual goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. Has the investment environment changed? The economy and markets are ever changing. A risk factor that wasn’t a concern before may be or should be a concern today. With the economy gaining some traction – albeit, slowly, the sense of new beginnings may mean new opportunities for forward thinking investors.
