e all want to hit the ball farther, and in many cases, we strengthen our muscles and use more force when we try to gain those few extra yards. “Hit it harder” is our mantra. You may be surprised to learn that this slows the club down. To hit the ball farther, we need more speed on the club head—not more strength. Smaller muscle groups (arms, hands, wrists) must remain relaxed and tension-free to generate this speed. Our mantra should be “swing it faster.” Keep in mind that the golf ball is merely a highlighted object in the path of the swing. We should be swinging through the ball and not at it.

Enriching Lives Through Adoption

O

pening your heart and home to an adopted pet leads to a path full of riches. Just when you think that you’re fulfilling a homeless pet’s dream of a Forever Home, you realize that it’s you who gets the gift of great love from a Forever Friend.

Here are some tips for a smooth transition.

Getting Off to a Healthy Start Even though your adopted pet may have current vaccinations, it’s wise to get a comprehensive physical exam, complete with blood analysis for heartworm and parasites. Overcrowded conditions of shelters make for easy transmission of disease that may not be apparent at first. A comprehensive blood test analyzes red and white cells to detect infection, and a blood chemistry analysis checks liver and kidney values and measures electrolytes. These tests not only help detect disease, but also serve as a baseline for future health exams. A fecal test can help detect intestinal parasites that sap blood of nutrients. Some intestinal and skin parasites can quickly transmit from your new adopted pet to those already at home, so it’s best to get tested within the first week of adoption. Get a dental check up, too. As with humans, mouths are the gateway to good health. Remember that dogs by nature mask discomfort and pain, so a thorough oral exam is a good step to

Get a bag of food that the shelter fed, and introduce new food gradually, to make it easy on digestive systems. Establish an exercise routine with play, to help reduce stress and encourage bonding. Shyness, anxiety, crying, barking and poor appetite are all symptoms that last just a few days as your pet transitions to new surroundings. EXPLORE THE

Artistry of Mixology By Patrick Turner, Marketing & Communications Director, The Discovery

R

eno, just like any metropolitan city, has no shortage of galas and annual fundraisers. Many deserving nonprofits rely on them for the burst of financial support they need to be able to serve their constituents and strive to achieve their mission. The Discovery is no different in that regard, but the museum’s largest annual fundraising event is definitely not your average gala. At most galas, you’ll find yourself seated at a table bidding on auction items, or listening to speakers tell you about the impact their organization is making. At The Discovery’s Chemistry of the Cocktail, you’ll experience first-hand how hands-on learning can make an impact in our community. Chemistry of the Cocktail invites you to explore the artistry of mixology by getting hands-on with the science behind the craft of cocktails. By partnering with local expert mixologists, The Discovery is able to help attendees understand how ingredients and techniques combine to create some of the most sought after libations. Chemistry of the Cocktail also includes food from many of Reno’s favorite culinary hot spots—what’s a good cocktail if it’s not paired with great food? And, it wouldn’t be a fundraiser if there weren’t a plethora of auction items to bid on. Chemistry of the Cocktail includes both silent and live auctions, so there are plenty of opportunities to get in on the action. And, of course, the entire museum is open for exploration and enjoyment. So, if you’re looking for an opportunity to get hands-on with cocktail chemistry and want to support The Discovery while doing so, make plans to attend Chemistry of the Cocktail on Friday, November 4th.

Inattentive Driving “Road sense is the offspring of courtesy and the parent of safety.” —AUSTRALIAN TRAFFIC RULE

H

ow many of us have been distracted while driving and recognized that when we turned our attention back to the road, we were lucky not to have been in trouble. Just a few seconds of not keeping watch while at the wheel of any vehicle can turn into a tragic accident. The fatalities that occurred on Somersett Parkway August 5th should have made a lasting impression on all of us who want to feel safe and be safe in our beautiful west Reno neighborhood. Since that accident, I have witnessed drivers tailgating, speeding through the roundabouts, not using turn signals, ignoring pedestrians waiting to cross the road, talking on their phones, and eating breakfast. The City of Reno has passed a new law that prohibits drivers from engaging in any activity that interferes with a person’s ability to operate a vehicle safely. The scope of the law appears to be broad, giving a police officer the discretion to stop any driver who appears to be inattentive while at the wheel of a moving vehicle. For example, if stopped while being observed to have been putting on makeup, driving with a dog in your lap, reading, or participating in any activity that could be interpreted by the officer to be distracting you from driving, you may be cited for inattentive driving and fined a whopping $305. Let’s all slow down, drive politely, and pay attention while we are behind the wheel. Driving safely and attentively is a good example to our children, allows us to be in control of our safety and the safety of others, and makes our community a more enjoyable place to come home to at any time of day. 24th Annual Donner Party Hike Provides Hikers with Spectacular Sierra Nevada Scenery Combined with Interesting History

H

ikers can travel the footsteps of early emigrant’s journey across the Sierra Nevada mountains October 8 & 9 by participating in the 24th Annual Donner Party Hike. Participants can choose from six different hikes on Saturday, and a walking tour on Sunday. All hikes offer interesting insight into emigrant history from local area guides, along with invigorating recreation and beautiful scenery. Saturday’s hikes begin and end at Donner Ski Ranch located on Highway 40 on Donner Summit. Guides will lead groups of approximately 15–20 people to interpretive spots giving detailed historical information focused on emigrant and area history. In the afternoon, hikers will enjoy a hamburger lunch, and a presentation by Frank Mullen an expert on the Donner Party. There are six hike options of varying length offered on Saturday. Explore the Dutch Flat Donner Lake Wagon Road and 1913 Corridor Lincoln Highway with views of petroglyphs, old roadside billboards and the China Wall. Hike up Roller Pass and Mt. Judah to see where wagon trains were winched up over the granite. Discover pristine High Sierra Lakes or explore Coldstream Canyon. Back this year is the return of the Railroad Snowsheds hike. Each hike offers a unique and memorable experience. Sunday starts with a more relaxed walking tour departing from the Donner Camp Picnic Area, located on 2.5 miles north of Truckee

on Highway 89. Following the walking tour where guides will detail the Donner Party’s encampment, participants will drive to Donner Memorial State Park to hear more about the Donner Party, the Pioneer Monument, visit the Murphy’s Cabin Site, and enjoy entrance to the all new visitor center offering a historical movie about the Donner Party. Space is limited for all events and reservations are required. Early registration for the Saturday hikes is $55 ($65 after September 30, 2016 per hiker) and includes a guided hike, commemorative walking stick (if you register early), hamburger lunch and afternoon presentation. Sunday’s walking tour is part of a two day package and includes the guided walk and entrance to the visitor center. 2-day hike package is $80 ($90 after September 30, 2016). Y Smart Investing

ou may hear some investors say: “If only I’d gotten in on the ground floor of such-and-such computer or social media company, I’d be rich today.” That may be true— but is it relevant? Do you have to be an early investor of a spectacular company to achieve investment success? Not really. But, like the early investors of the next big thing, you need to be ready, willing and able to look for good opportunities. For example, is your portfolio filled with the same type of investments? Try to broaden your holdings beyond one or two asset classes. Also, take advantage of opportunities offered by a down market. How? By purchasing more shares of quality investments whose prices have dropped. When the market recovers, your increased ownership should be worth more. (Keep in mind, though, when investing in stocks, there are no guarantees; some stocks lose value and may never recover.) You may never hit the next big thing. But by taking advantage of opportunities that come your way, you can look like a pretty smart investor. Assessment Payments Submitted Online (via Paylease) Did you know you can pay your monthly assessments online from the FirstService Residential website? Please be aware that payments submitted online go through a third-party payment processing company called Paylease. Payments submitted through Paylease will, and typically do, take up to three business days to be credited to your assessment account. Please keep this information in mind for last-minute assessment payments as payments received after the 30th are subject to a $25 late fee. Paylease does charge a fee for its service, and you can pay a larger fee to have the payment posted within one business day. If you would like information on automatic payments that are processed free of charge, please contact the association and request a ‘surepay’ application. You may also submit payments to the SOA office, via check or money order only.

S O A Compliance Information To report a non-compliance, please email or call Nicole Drumm at ndrumm@mysomersett.com or 787-4500 x327. Please note that while we do investigate and document each complaint received, we cannot disclose the status of anyone’s account. Should a homeowner not respond to or correct a violation, he or she will be summoned to a hearing and could be suspended from the Club and assessed fines. At this time the Association has a policy not to enter a property unless it is bank owned, and then only to repair front yard landscaping.

Andrea Bryant

A

ndrea was born and raised in Minden, NV where she attended Douglas High School (Go Tigers!). After graduation she went to the University of Nevada, Reno and completed a Bachelor’s Degree in International Business. During her college years she lived life to the fullest by joining a sorority on campus and worked as a Whitewater Rafting guide in the summer and a Children’s Ski instructor in the winter at Mt. Rose. Once out of college, she accepted a job that moved her to the South. It was then she realized that she was meant to live on the West Coast so she moved back to family and friends in 2012. When not at work, you will find her on the soccer field either coaching her competitive club team or playing in one of her many adult leagues. Andrea has over ten years’ experience in many capacities of the hospitality industry ranging from Front Desk to Director of Housekeeping. After she joined FirstService Residential, she obtained her Provisional Community Manager’s license and already put it to use as the Compliance Director at Somersett. Andrea is very excited to be working as the Assistant Community Manager at Somersett where “It’s great to be Home”. 28
