‘Think local’ has always been at the core of its mission
The words “Think Local” have taken on various meanings over the last decade across multiple industries. Great Basin Co-Op, though, was founded on perhaps the truest and simplest definition of this now commonly used phrase.
COMMUNITY
Today, nearly 20 years after its original founding, the Great Basin Co-Op and all that its Court Street location have to offer, are a far cry from its humble beginnings in the kitchen of the two local sisters who founded it. The square footage of the space may be far larger, and the quantity of the food products and consumable items inside has also grown considerably, but because the co-op has stuck to its core mission, the impact it has had on its community looms even larger than these other changes. Hopefully, for the sake of the greater Reno community, Great Basin Co-Op will be around another 20-plus years to assist in the health and growth of its residents.
Founded in 2005 as a buyers’ club, its goal was to increase community access to local, sustainable, and affordable food while also supporting the local economy. Since then, there have been a few adjustments to the business model and multiple location changes, but today, Great Basin is a successful, member-based co-op, with a market as well as an in-house café and juice bar. It provides produce, meats, and other consumable products from dozens of local producers, farmers, ranchers, and vendors in the larger Sierra Nevada region. Great Basin operates its organization off seven foundational principles created by the first ever co-op and endorsed by the International Co-op Alliance. The principles include a voluntary and open membership, governed by democratic principles and active member participation. The cooperative must operate independently with education as a key value and service to its members and community. While self-governance is vital, cooperation with other co-ops and organizations is key, so long as the organization retains its own control and is regularly serving the needs of its members and the larger community.
If you visit the co-op, whether to pick up some groceries or have a sandwich or fresh juice in the café, it is easy to see these principles at work. All of the food including produce and meat is from places and towns most visitors know by name and are a short drive away. Most of the other supplementary products one might normally find in a grocery store are here too, except all are also 100% local, supporting small businesses, entrepreneurs, and artisans in our local neighborhoods and storefronts. The value of community and Great Basin’s adherence to it is visible everywhere. Almost just as fitting as what you find at the co-op is what you won’t. All of the products are health-minded and focused. None of the foods contain artificial preservatives, sweeteners, or colors. High fructose syrup is a no-go at Great Basin as are foods with synthetic hormones, preventative antibiotics, MSG, or hydrogenated oils. Animal testing or unfair labor practices are also not permitted if a vendor or farmer wants to sell their items. All these rules help the co-op achieve its mission, which is to serve the community by providing healthy, local, sustainably produced, high-quality food and items.

Somersett’s annual MC Believe in Education 5K and Fun Run honors a former resident, Michele Cervantes, with the proceeds going toward a scholarship for a McQueen graduate.
This year’s scholarship awardees are Jadacie Cook and Landen Smith, who will both head to the University of Nevada Reno this fall. Jadacie will study psychology, and Landen will pursue kinesiology. Both plan to use the scholarship money to help with tuition. Jadacie wants to study criminal psychology because she is interested in understanding why people do what they do. She was chosen to be part of UNR’s Dean’s Future Scholars program when she was in sixth grade. The organization helps underserved students in Northern Nevada realize their dreams of higher education. Future Scholars helped her take summer classes and she will enter her freshman year with several courses under her belt, including Psychology 101. Landen was inspired to pursue kinesiology by Emily, a physical therapist who helped him in 2020. He plans to work with kids under the age of 18. Jadacie and Landen both expressed sincere gratitude to those who come together at MC Believe to help students achieve their goals. “Education is so important,’ says Jadacie. “The time and effort put into this event mean a lot to me,” says Landen.
MC Believe in Education is so much more than a 5K run and walk. It’s a celebration of the importance of education and literacy and the passion of the person whose life inspired the event, the late Michele Cervantes. Michele was a master elementary school teacher whose vision for lifelong learning continues through her students, family, friends, and all who participate in MC Believe. Each year the proceeds from the event go to scholarships for McQueen High School graduates.

I can’t stress enough the importance of understanding the downswing path in the golf swing. As golfers, we often hear the phrase “outside-in” relating to the club. An “outside-in” swing path is both a distance robber and a directional destroyer. An “outside-in” swing path will lead to the dreaded slice. It is imperative in the downswing that the arms and hands do not throw the club outward but rather, as body weight transitions to the target, that they fall more downward. Question OK Stuart, I am achieving a better downswing path, but my ball is still going to the right and slicing. What now? You can’t fix the direction the ball goes with the downswing path only. After achieving a better downswing path, the clubface will be your friend in correcting direction and can eliminate the slicing. Simply said, learn an “inside-out” swing path and rotate the clubface through the ball for longer, straighter shots. Practice, Practice, Practice. The Care Matters team turns plastic bags into “plarn,’’ then crochets the “plarn” into sleeping mats that are distributed to people in the Reno area without permanent shelter. The lightweight mats are waterproof and provide protection from the cold ground, while at the same time keeping plastic out of our landfills. Volunteers are welcome and experience is not required! Mah Jongg Mondays and Thursdays, 1-4 pm Mah Jongg is a challenging tile game that originated in China, and we’re playing it at the Club with the National Mah Jongg League rules and play card. Tennis Courts and Lap Pool: At its July 27 meeting, the Board approved a plan to install the same system at the Lap Pool and Tennis Court gates. You will still need to reserve a tennis court or lap swim spot through Zen Planner, but once the cameras and gate locks are installed, you will be able to access the courts and pool with your access card.

The E-Pass is a digital resident verification card. If you download it to the wallet on your phone, you can easily present the pass when you arrive at the Club or the pool, with no need give your name and address for resident verification. WHAT IS A SOMERSETT E-PASS?
If you don’t yet have an after-hours access card, be sure to stop by the front desk at the Club and get a key fob, key card, or a link to the app (your choice). The security access cards are working well for the over 1,000 residents who have signed up, which allows access to the Club seven days a week from 5 am to 9 pm when the doors are locked. If you don’t have an access card, the front doors will be open for check-in: • Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 4 pm • Most weekdays from 8 am to 5 pm How to get your card: Stop by the front desk and fill out a waiver form and you will be given a key fob, key card, or a link to the app which staff will activate once your residency is authenticated. Do you live behind a gate? We are in the process of updating our gate cameras and gate access systems to one which is compatible with the access cards. Eventually you will be able to use the same fob, card, or app that you use to enter the Club to open your community gates (at this point you will no longer need your gate clicker). As of press time for this magazine, only Mountain Crest gates had the new system up and running.

One year ago there were about 20 homes on the market, so it has definitely turned from a sellers market to a buyers market in the last 90 days. In the overall Reno Sparks market there are 1580 homes on the market right now, and 1 year ago there were 300 on the market, big difference in inventory. Also we are seeing prices down about 8-10% from the high and the average market time right now is about 50 days. The closed sales prices have not reflected the adjustment but by the end of September they will. But to put it in perspective, prices have gone up 50% over the last 3 years and are down about 10% so values are still up 40% from 3 years ago. Dennis had made many local music connections over the eight years he has lived in the Back Nine Trail community and through playing bass in a Reno band for a time. He now volunteers his time by recommending talented local bands to the SOA’s Community Events Committee for events such as Music on the Green, Mardi Gras, the Somersett Car Show, the Holiday Gala, and many more.

By Kim Maples, Communications Committee member In 2013 Dennis O’Connell, a retired manager, application developer, and Department of Justice employee, and his wife lived in Sacramento, but frequently commuted to a vacation home in Soda Springs. They had always been curious about the attractivelooking neighborhood in the mountains off Route 80 in Northwest Reno. When he was unable to find any neighborhood info on the internet, Dennis decided to drive over to investigate and was surprised to discover the opportunity to build a new luxury home on a world-class golf course with beautiful public parks and spaces. The O’Connells decided to build a new home here and moved to Somersett in 2014. Realizing that many other folks might want to learn more about Somersett online, Dennis joined the SOA’s Communications Committee. He soon purchased the domains somersett.org, somersett.net, and somersett.info, and helped the SOA build its prototype website. The site now Somersett.org has morphed over the years and is continuously being improved by Communications Committee members since Dennis resigned in 2018. Dennis chuckles when committee members call him one of our “Website Founding Fathers,” remembering his recognition of how important a website is in highlighting Somersett amenities to residents and potential buyers, which helps to increase home values.
Dennis also books entertainment and engineers live sound for the bands that play at Peavine Taphouse, our local Somersett neighborhood restaurant and bar every Wednesday (7-9 pm), Friday, and Saturday (8:30-11 pm). Dennis shares, “the bands I work with love to play at Somersett because the people and energy are so uplifting.”
Dennis and his wife love Somersett for its climate, beautiful, wellkept grounds, and amazing views of the Sierras. And the SOA is grateful to Dennis for being a pivotal part of sharing Somersett with so many others in 2014 and beyond.

The Budget committee has been working diligently all summer to develop the SOA budget for 2023. We’ve been fortunate these past two years to reap the benefits of cost-cutting measures, increased efficiencies, and the elimination of waste, and this has kept assessments in check. Yet rapidly rising costs over the past year affect us all, and the SOA is not immune. Although as of this writing the budget has not yet been finalized, the challenges are many. Smart and creative committee members are working to make the most of our situation and cover the increased expenses. Regardless, increases in assessments are inevitable. The task is to hold this increase to a minimum while preserving our services, amenities, and quality. We’ve made too much progress to go backward now. When it comes to the budget, what is most important to you? (Let us know soon). The proposed budget will be ratified at the Annual Meeting in November. A new season Welcome to Autumn in Somersett with all its color and splendor. Cooler temperatures bring a renewed sense of energy and the chance to catch up on some of those outdoor projects before the holidays. You’ll notice that our landscape improvements continue and some deep work on irrigation systems may be scheduled before the winter which may result in some temporary detours. Thanks in advance for your patience. Firewise accreditation Somersett has achieved Firewise USA® accreditation, thanks to the leadership and dedication of homeowner Kevin McCarthy. Also instrumental were the efforts of Wilderness Forestry, Reliance Landscaping, and individual homeowners who expended time and money to improve the defensible space around their homes. Thank you all. Credit also goes to Tray Palmer (Fire Marshal, Reno Fire Department) who provided green waste dumpsters and a public education presence during Earth Day weekend and to Kelli Nevills (Nevada Division of Forestry) who was essential to our completing the application successfully. Our Firewise accreditation is valid through the end of 2023 and certifies to insurers and agencies that Somersett is committed and is taking active steps to improve fire safety and education in our community. AGC Guidelines revisions Hundreds of hours have been invested by the Aesthetic Guidelines Committee since last June to complete the revisions to the AGC Guidelines. One goal has been to simplify the rules and make them more consistent. Another has been to make them more clear and direct, with less on “vision statements and flowery language.” Updates to reduce fire hazards, address new landscape products, and add more choices are also included. Finally, we’ve streamlined the application process to make the process smoother and quicker. Aesthetic standards are essential to maintaining the look and feel of our community and ensuring this should be as easy and expeditious as possible. We all appreciate the overall macro environment in Somersett, and it becomes immediately apparent when some projects skirt these standards. We do all we can to contain the outliers. In any HOA, a common complaint is that the aesthetic approval application process is arduous and restrictive. We’re very aware of this sentiment and feel the application and approval process should be as easy and friendly as possible while still preserving our community’s aesthetic goals. We’ll help make this easy. You can schedule a preemptive meeting while you are still in the planning phase so we can answer all your questions, suggest the best and easiest way to proceed, and make sure your submission is complete so that it gets approved in one meeting. We’re here to help and support your efforts to improve the look of Somersett for us all. Let’s work together on this! Pickleball is a racquet sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. Even if you’ve never played this beginner-friendly game before, come on out and join the fun! No equipment is needed everything is provided. After your game, indoor play equipment must be stowed away neatly for the next player. Please move the nets on the tennis court to the fence to prevent damage. Reservations are necessary and are available through Zen Planner.

This is the first of a series of articles featuring the schools where our youngest Somersett residents spend most of their time.
He’s proud when sharing that Westergard has been able to provide students with PE and art programs when other Reno public schools do not. He attributes this to the parents and teachers that contribute their time to the Westergard Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), volunteering and raising funds for student enrichment programs and events. These activities are particularly important to Westergard students because research has shown that Nevada typically spends less on education than the national average due to several factors at the state level. When asked how parents can get involved, Ben says “it can be as simple as reading to your child.” Parents who have the time are welcome to work with teachers to help in the classroom, become crossing guards when school starts or lets out, join the PTO or help with the running club “we welcome parental help in so many ways, there really isn’t a single way to get involved,” Ben says. “Be Awesome,” his personal motto, is now a mantra with the students and staff at Westergard. It reminds students to do their best wherever they are and work to be better without the need to be perfect. Somersett families thank Principal Dickson and the whole Westergard administration and education staff for being awesome and for their hard work and dedication to helping our children realize they can be the best version of themselves. Coffee Talk with Westergard Principal Ben Dickson

Guest author: Kim Maples, Somersett resident and parent I brought Westergard Elementary Principal Ben Dickson a coffee and asked him some questions about himself and Westergard, “home of the Wildcats,” where over 500 kids attend classes every day. Ben is married to a teacher with two adult children aged 25 and 27 and was raised in Sparks. A life-long educator with an eclectic professional background, his first position at a local elementary school was not as a teacher but as the night custodian while getting his teaching credential. He then earned double master’s degrees in curriculum and administration while teaching almost every grade level from kindergarten to sixth in four Reno elementary schools. Previous roles also include being an instructional coach for teachers across the Washoe County School District, a two-year stint as Dean of Students, and three years as an Assistant Principal before starting at Westergard almost three years ago. To say he’s seen it all is an understatement. But when asked “why Westergard” there is no hesitation in his answer, “it’s the community,” says Ben. “I love the neighborhood and staff and because I live here. I’m contributing to my own village.”

Nevada law requires that all directors be elected by secret written ballot. Only you can vote on your secret ballot, which must be completely filled in and placed in the envelope marked secret ballot. It will not be opened until the annual meeting on Wednesday, November 16, 2022.
