GUIDE

Sempre Avanti–Always Forward

Our Mission Justin-Siena is a Catholic high school in the Lasallian tradition called to provide educational excellence in a loving, Christ-centered community that prepares students to serve and to lead in an ever-changing world. ABOUT OUR SCHOOL SEAL In addition to identifying our location and the year of our 1966 founding, our seal contains the history of our school. The Justin-Siena seal embodies the icons of the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael (who co-sponsored the school through the 2006) and the De La Salle Christian Brothers. The original Dominican black and white cross, fleury, indicates a spiritual ideal in spreading the Gospel of Christ by preaching and teaching. The five-pointed star signifies the sign of faith, which guides all Christian Brothers and Lasallian partners in their vocation of Christian education. Finally, “Sempre Avanti” heralds the legacy of the Brothers, and more specifically, Justin High School. Italian for “always forward” these words appeared on the Justin High School seal representing a commitment of the Christian Brothers to looking forward and never being complacent, while exhibiting a passion for preparing the students entrusted to their care.

History

Justin-Siena High School was founded in 1966 as Justin High School for boys (sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers) and Siena High School for girls (sponsored by the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael). In 1972, the schools merged and became co-educational under the name of Justin-Siena High School. The De La Salle Christian Brothers became the sole sponsor of Justin-Siena in June 2006. With such a rich heritage, Justin-Siena bears a distinction of educational excellence that ensures the school is always moving forward as our motto suggests—Sempre Avanti. We take pride in our current students and graduates who continue to serve and lead in their communities.

Our Lasallian Heritage

The Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools (also known as the De La Salle Christian Brothers) is a Roman Catholic teaching order founded in France in 1680 by John Baptist de La Salle, a Catholic priest. Originally serving the purpose of educating the young, with a particular concern to those of modest or limited means, the De La Salle Christian Brothers currently sponsor approximately 1,000 institutions in more than 80 countries around the world. St. John Baptist de La Salle, is regarded today as the patron saint of all teachers. It is from this rich legacy lasting more than 330 years that we celebrate our Lasallian traditions every day, throughout our campus, and in all that we do.

WELCOME In every endeavor, we aim to cultivate growth of the mind, body, and spirit. Like our Founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle, we guide our students to become all God made them to be, and a strong partnership with parents is essential in achieving this goal.

Lasallian Student Life The Lasallian Student Life Office (LSLO) is responsible for serving the needs of the student, from prayer and worship experiences, to retreats, rallies, dances, student council, clubs, and assemblies. LSL programs help ensure that the Five Core Principles of a Lasallian school are lived out on a daily basis in all the activities of our school. Prayer and Retreats True to the core of our mission, Justin-Siena provides numerous opportunities and experiences to deepen our prayer life. It has been our tradition to start prayers with the Sign of the Cross and the Lasallian prayer: Let us Remember... that we are in the Holy Presence of God, after which silence is observed. After a general prayer, reflection, scripture passage, or intercessions, we end all prayers with St. John Baptist de La Salle... Pray for us as well as another Lasallian prayer, Live Jesus in our hearts...forever! Other prayer opportunities are Kairos, class level retreats, retreat reunions, and immersion experiences. We have monthly Eucharist or prayer servicess at which we observe and celebrate liturgical seasons such as Advent, Lent, and Easter, special feasts like Our Lady of Guadalupe, All Saints, and Founders Day. During these special times, the entire campus is filled with reminders through banners, posters, altars, symbols, rituals, and reflection materials. VENAVER VENAVER, which translated means “come and see,” is an immersion and advocacy experience that provides a challenging opportunity. VENAVER addresses the tenets of faith, community, and social justice that are so critical to education in a Lasallian school. VENAVER experiences have taken place in Arizona, Los Angeles, Montana, and locally in the Napa Valley. Gathering A quarterly student assembly focused on student recognition and gratitude. Justin-Siena is not the only school with students willing to put in a lot of effort in order to get results. However, it is this practice of gratitude and appreciation that helps differentiate a Justin-Siena Brave from others. Students show gratitude for opportunities given by peers, staff, and parents with the knowledge that they become more successful by appreciating those helping us to get there. Students recognize that showing gratitude is important to our growth as individuals and as a community. Questions? Contact Ms. Megan Alexander-Short ’07 at malexandershort@justin-siena.org..

Lasallian Core Principles Lasallian education enriches the whole person through teaching, technology and the development of the student’s cultural, intellectual, physical, social, and spiritual well-being. Lasallian education centers on Catholic values and personal relationships, emphasizing academic excellence, faith formation, inclusion, respect for the individual, service, and social justice.

Advisory Program The purpose of advisory is two-fold: to ensure that all students are seen, known and loved, and to help positively shape student culture through a relationship-focused, student-centered program. This program allows us to live out the ideals of our heritage and our mission. Advisory is a dedicated time for a small cohort of students and an adult advisor to foster whole-person growth through authentic relationships. Students are paired with an advisor, and advisors serve as mentors and coaches, becoming elder brothers and sisters to our students just as St. John Baptist de La Salle envisioned. Through the cultivation of relationships, exploration of social-emotional learning, as well as acquiring practical metacognitive and academic skills, we provide space for students to become their best selves. What to Know: • •

New students will find out their faculty/staff Advisor at the start of the school year Parents will have the opportunity to meet their child’s Advisor(s) at Student-led Conferences

My Child’s Advisor(s)/Notes:

ALLHEART Culture We are JS; We are ALLHEART Being all ALLHEART means two things at the same time. It is about making the most of God given gifts. And, as we become all we are made to be, we learn to live our lives for the benefit of others. Being ALLHEART means taking action. We believe, we love, and we will. We Believe: Through our faith and by believing in ourselves and each other can we reach our full potential. Belief is the confidence of knowing that our lives have purpose, and that we are always in the holy presence of God. We Love: We love, so we fully give ourselves to others. Only in the context of love will we become who we were made to be—individually and collectively. We Will: Willpower is present within all of us. We have the power to will a better reality into existence.

Justin-Siena Theatre Celebrating 50 years of excellence, Justin-Siena has a rich tradition in the performing arts, dating back to 1969 with its first production, My Fair Lady. Our home venue for large scale productions is the Napa Valley Performing Arts Center at Lincoln Theatre. As an educational affiliate at this world class venue students have access to the best of theater technology and innovation, and our arts faculty, who are all working, professional artists, bring a unique experience to the Justin-Siena student artist. This year’s theatre line-up offers four productions: a play, a musical, a comedy improv show, and an evening of original student plays. Encourage your student to try-out—whether on stage or as a technician, theatre teaches many life skills and is a lot of fun! Students should watch Schoology for announcements regarding auditions and/or contact Mr. James Thomas Bailey jbailey@justin-siena.org.

In addition to STEM-related tasks, teams also must raise funds, design and market their team brand, and engage in community outreach. Each season concludes with Super-Regional Championships and for top teams, an exciting FIRST World Championship. Recruitment for the team is ongoing and freshman team members are absolutely welcome. Interested students should contact Coach Carpenter at gcarpenter@justin-siena.org.

Justin-Siena Mock Trial Defending county champions for six years running, the Justin-Siena Mock Trial team presents a rich opportunity for students to acquire a working knowledge of our judicial system, develop analytical abilities and communication skills, all while deepening their understanding of their obligations and responsibilities as participating members of our society.
