OUTCROP HOUSE
Studio 7, ManuFAB Studio: Conservation & Prefabrication - Sheryl Boyle : April 2017 * Awarded the NICHOLAS C. SCOLOZZI SCHOLARSHIP IN ARCHITECTURE, Carleton University This dwelling is situated on Tarvo, a small rocky peninsula to the north-west of Helsinki, FInland looking out onto an inlet of the sea. Tarvo sits adjacent to a major Helsinki motorway and is also accessible to pedestrians and cyclists from the Western mainland via a foot bridge and cycling path. Taking inspiration from the traditional Finnish Sauna, the south facing soapstone-clad trombe wall collects and disperses heat from the sun throughout the wood clad interior, taking full advantage of the scarce and precious Scandinavian sunlight.

Designed to accommodate a young working couple with one child, the house’s home office gives its adult occupants the option of working from home. Main living and sleeping spaces have been organized around central ‘service hubs’ that house the bathrooms, kitchen, and storage spaces. Composed of two pre-fabricated boxes made of cross-laminated timber measuring 11m x 4.75m clad in charred Shou Sugi Ban cedar boards, the dwelling cantilevers over the rock edge with large windows on the south and west facades to maximize daylight exposure. This dwelling uses solar thermal collection and water storage as its main source of heating and environmental control. The water warmed by the solar-thermal panels on the southern face of the building is stored in tanks in a heavily insulated room under the living space through the summer months, and is then used to heat the interior of the house in the winter. Additionally, radiant heat is sent to the main kitchen, dining, and living spaces via a sauna on the lower level. Other services, such as gas, hydro, and sewage, are connected to the existing Helsinki grid.

Studio 6, Urbanity, Dwelling and Community - Benjamin Gianni : December 2016 Collaboration with Thomas Inwood SUBMITTED TO THE 2017 OTTAWA URBAN DESIGN AWARDS This urban development proposal envisions a new future for a portion of Manor Park Estates, a neighbourhood in the Rideau-Rockcliffe Ward in the east end of Ottawa. In addition to increasing the number and range of people living on the site, the goal is to revitalize a 4-block stretch of St Laurent Blvd at Hemlock Rd with new, street-oriented retail establishments. The proposal also creates a large park in the center of the site, linked to courtyards at either corner of the redevelopment. Around this park is a wide range of housing, including freehold townhouses, midrise apartments, and a 20-storey condominium tower.

Working with extra-wide lots allowed for the incorporation of double rows of townhouses, separated by looped rear laneways. The townhouses in the center of the block face on to a landscaped pedestrian path. At the corner of St Laurent and Hemlock this mid-block path connects to a courtyard at the base of the tower, for which a drop-off area has been provided. Double-sided retail also faces into the courtyard, making it an ideal setting for cafes and outdoor dining. The courtyard complements broad sidewalks and a south-facing terrace along Hemlock. Three-storey freehold townhouses are grouped in blocks of four – with three bedrooms, a large open living floor, a den on ground level and a generous roof terrace, the townhouses are designed to be family friendly. Single-car garages (with room for a second car in the driveway) face the rear laneway. The ground-level den, with its 3-piece bathroom and private entrance, can be rented out separately.

DELFSHAVEN PIER
Studio 5, Building in the City - Honorata Pien’kowska : April 2016 Directed Studies Abroad - Rotterdam, The Netherlands Situated on a site between the Niewe Maas River and the Delfshaven Canal in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, this building mimics the surrounding industrial aesthetic and privileges its connections to the water. Incorporating a Rowing Club, a basketball gymnasium/multi purpose space, a small Library, and a Cafe, it is a buzzing hub of physical activity and social interaction. Extending underneath the road, the Rowing Club storage and staging area opens directly at the water level. The library, lifted and cantilevered, periscopes overtop of the road and over the water, providing both panoramic views of the Canal and rowers, and free pedestrian passage below on the lawn. Centrally connected by a light-filled atrium with grand stairs and interconnecting bridges, the axis of circulation provides visual and experiential connections to both bodies of water.

SOMERSET STACKS
Studio 3, Crafting Architecture’s Measures - Janine Debanné : April 2015 Ottawa Branch Library, Chinatown Situated in Ottawa’s Chinatown, the main concept of this small library and plaza lies in its bridging of public and private spaces of reading and gathering. This echoes the connections between cultures and the generational passing of knowledge between people and through time. The glazed atrium divides the two wings of the library. Facing Somerset St are the light-filled ‘public’ areas for children and social interactions, and an outdoor terrace facing the Chinatown Gateway Arch. Across the bridges and on the other side of the wall, facing the plaza, are the book stacks, reading tables, and a multi-purpose room for community events.

Designed and completed two sets of Rear Yard Addition Building Permit Application drawings for two clients in a heritage designated neighbourhood in Centretown. Incorporated into the design and application process for the covered porch addition was a minor variance and multiple meetings with the City of Ottawa Committee of Adjustments. Both projects were approved and granted Building Permits, and completed construction by the Spring of 2016.
