* winner | 2017-18 aia cote top ten for students innovation 2030 competition aia cote, acsa, architecture 2030 * published | architect magazine 04/2018 building 22, edition 18 04/2018 * 2018 faculty choice award | azrieli school of architecture & urbanism, carleton university the city of ottawa’s community design plan for bayview station district allows for considerable up-zoning to transform a community scale neighbourhood into an area of many 12- to 30-storey condominium towers by the year 2030. this new influx of high residential density will sit at the intersection of ottawa’s past industrial district and several residential neighbourhoods. located between hintonburg and centretown west near bayview transit station, the 1908 ottawa stairworks factory building sits beside a modernist warehouse complex with a rich history of design, fabrication, and material innovation.
the 2017-2018 aia cote top ten for students ‘innovation 2030’ competition recognized ten exceptional studio projects demonstrating designs moving towards carbon-neutral operation through creative and innovative integration of design strategies such as daylighting, passive heating and cooling, materials, water, energy generation, and sustainable systems. the program challenged students to submit projects that use a thoroughly integrated approach to architecture, natural systems, and technology to provide architectural solutions that protect and enhance the environment.
the stairworks building serves as the site for this adaptive reuse project to house city centre glassworks, an experimental fabrication facility promoting recycling, up-cycling, and transformation of everyday glass items into new building materials and handcrafted pieces of art. the project provides new workshop and testing facilities for new types of glass block masonry and structural glass products, while simultaneously providing demonstration and craft studios for local glassblowing artists.
this adaptive reuse project utilizes the heat from making glass to warm the building and save on energy; a superb adaptation for the ottawan climate. the buildings programs and systems are well designed and tailored for each other. a wonderful example of this is the rising mist, created from residual heat, brings an element of delight to the project. the architectural exploration is plausible and grounded in reality.
the project addresses ten sustainability measures, as outlined by architecture 2030: design for integration, design for community, design for ecology, design for water, design for economy, design for energy, design for wellness, design for resources, design for change, and design for discovery.

outcrop house
a study of prefabrication for tiny house living * 2017 nicholas scolozzi scholarship in architecture | azrieli school of architecture & urbanism, carleton university
this dwelling is situated on tarvo, a small rocky peninsula to the north-west of helsinki, finland looking out onto an inlet of the sea. tarvo sits adjacent to a major helsinki motorway and is also accessible to pedestrians and cyclists from the western mainland via a foot bridge and cycling path. taking inspiration from the traditional finnish sauna, the south facing soapstoneclad trombe wall collects and disperses heat from the sun throughout the wood clad interior, taking full advantage of the scarce and precious scandinavian sunlight. composed of two pre-fabricated boxes made of cross-laminated timber measuring 11m x 4.75m clad in charred shou sugi ban cedar boards, the dwelling cantilevers over the rock edge with large windows on the south and west facades to maximize daylight exposure.
26
main living and sleeping spaces have been organized around central ‘service hubs’ that house the bathrooms, kitchen, and storage spaces. this dwelling uses solar thermal collection and water storage as its main source of heating and environmental control. the water warmed by the solarthermal panels on the southern face of the building is stored in tanks in a heavily insulated room under the living space through the summer months, and is then used to heat the interior of the house in the winter. radiant heat is sent to the main kitchen, dining, and living spaces via a sauna on the lower level. other services, such as gas, hydro, and sewage, are connected to the existing helsinki grid.

crossroads
a housing redevelopment for manor park estates collaboration with thomas inwood * entry | 2017 ottawa urban design awards | city of ottawa
This urban development proposal envisions a new future for a portion of Manor Park Estates, a neighbourhood in the Rideau-Rockcliffe Ward in the east end of Ottawa. In addition to increasing the number and range of people living on the site, the goal is to revitalize a 4-block stretch of St Laurent Blvd at Hemlock Rd with new, street-oriented retail establishments. The proposal also creates a large park in the center of the site, linked to courtyards at either corner of the redevelopment. Around this park is a wide range of housing, including freehold townhouses, midrise apartments, and a 20-storey condominium tower. Situated in the northern lobe of Manor Park Estates, 869 Hemlock Road is a 5.5acre parcel, facing Beechwood Cemetery to the south, Manor Park Public School to the west, and St. Laurent Boulevard to the east. It currently supports 86 townhouses divided among nine blocks or terraces. Characterized by deep front yards and extensive mid-block spaces, the Manor Park Estates townhouses were constructed at a relatively low density commensurate with their location on what was, in the late 1940s, the far periphery of Ottawa. Rows of attached garages originally located behind the townhouse blocks have since been demolished, leaving vast areas of underutilized space in the interiors of relatively deep blocks. While higher in density than the single-
42
family portions of Manor Park, the townhouses were constructed at a significantly lower density than standard townhouses seen today. The scale and density of this housing seems especially low along St. Laurent Blvd, where blocks of townhouses and deep lawns face commercial establishments across the street. Working with extra-wide lots allowed for the incorporation of double rows of townhouses, separated by looped rear laneways. The townhouses in the center of the block face on to a landscaped pedestrian path. At the corner of St Laurent and Hemlock this mid-block path connects to a courtyard at the base of the tower, for which a drop-off area has been provided. Double-sided retail also faces into the courtyard, making it an ideal setting for cafes and outdoor dining. The courtyard complements broad sidewalks and a south-facing terrace along Hemlock. Three-storey freehold townhouses are grouped in blocks of four with three bedrooms, a large open living floor, a den on ground level and a generous roof terrace, the townhouses are designed to be family friendly. Singlecar garages (with room for a second car in the driveway) face the rear laneway. The ground-level den, with its 3-piece bathroom and private entrance, can be rented out separately.
