ÂŤFashion has always been a great area of experimentation and expression, in which I need to feel freeÂť How did you discover an interest in fashion design? Charlotte: When I was a child, my grandmother was a dressmaker in Alger. She is the one who taught me everything me about couture, and transmited me her passion. Later, my dad encouraged me to draw to express myself though art. From then, I knew I wanted to become a stylist; I left south of France when I was 19 years old to study in a fashion school in Paris.

44

MAGAZINE

Ilana: I have always enjoyed dressing up with quirky outfits, it was a way to stand out from the crowd ( even if it was sometime a bit strange). I liked to mix genres and styles. I used to cut out my mom’s cocktail dresses and associate it with my grand dad 70s jacket. Fashion has always been a great area of experimentation and expression, in which I need to feel free. Charlotte and I both share the same fashion vision: a way of expressing a strong desire for singularity.

"VINTAGE IS OFTEN A MISCONCEIVED WORLD"

47

What is the concept behind “Women and Playground” collection? « Women & Playground » stages various characters’ life moments, child-like women on a bright colored set posing edgily in direct reference to 60s/70s. This collection was inspired by the pop movement and the art of banging colors together. Subtly and quirkly, with a playful approach to clothing, styling oneself is made into a playground where freedom and self-derision prevail. We wanted the silhouettes to be feminine and colorful, half way between vintage and modernity. This first collection is about little girls who dress up with their mom’s outfits.

48

MAGAZINE

Our video was shot in Brasserie Barbes, a new trendy place located near Pigalle. Sophisticated silhouettes move around in a bourgeois setting, where as we can the overground of this popular district. The girls gang stare at the camera, self-assured and assertive, almost defiantly, as if interrupted mid-sentence by the intrusive lens of the photographer.

What do you want to express with your concept, and what is your pieces selection process ? Vintage is often a misconceived world. For a lot of us, it feels difficult and unnatural to thrift shop and to imagine looks that can be modern and retro all at once.

Finding a piece according to our taste can even feel time consuming. We wanted to stage key pieces that are engraved within the collective memory and to re-interpret them with a contemporary state of mind, to the point of hoisting vintage at the peak of modernity. Intro Selection is like a mediator between the consumer and the vintage world, offering a refined selection of pieces according to current trends. The consumer is thus oriented on how to put together the pieces. The selection process doesn’t follow an ensemble of rules but rather relies on intuition. Their wish is to satisfy a desire for aestheticism and individuality, but also to recover the sense that used to be given to each item of clothing in the past. We give a great attention to noble fabrics such as 100% cotton, virgin wool or silk. The touch is really important as well, we want our client to feel comfortable wearing our pieces. The pieces are then staged in a subtle and quirky manner, and presented each season in the form of a collection with a theme and specific references according to their style and period.

49

How does your cultural environment influence your way of working? We are both living in the 9th district of Paris, located between two emblematic neighbourhoods: Pigalle is a busy district, renowned for its cabaret, and Montmartre is a symbol of the old and authentic Paris. Those two areas have always been exposed to an artistic environment, with big names such as Picasso, Dali, Rimbaud, Verlaine or Edith Piaf. We like to explore the city to find some rare pieces, from french brands such as Thierry Mugler or Céline. You can’t deny the fact that Paris is very inspiring city, because of it architecture, theatres, museums, shops and flea markets. All of those fantastic places stimulate our imagination in our shooting set up. « 80 Ecclectic Eccentricity » photoshoot has been shot at historical cabaret Madame Arthur, in art-déco setting in Pigalle.

50

"WE ARE DEEPLY COMMITTED TO SURREALISM"

51

What fascinates you about the art world today? What are your main inspirations? Art has long been seen as the preserve of an elite, but now it’s freer and wilder. We highly appreciate the merger between these different fields of creation, whether it is visual art, fine art, architecture, cinema, music or fashion. Anyone is allowed to express its creativity by detaching themselves from the established rules. Some artists truly stand out and offer a bold and colorful vision fo the world we live in. We are deeply committed to surrealism. Its symbolic dimension definitely remains an inspiration with artists such as Max Ernst, Dali, Miro or Frida Kahlo. The idea of a harmony of colours and shapes is a very important issue in particular in Gary Hume or Hernan Bas works of art. Finally, we love Eugenia Loli’s collage boldness vand fun aspect.

What upcoming projects can we expect to see from you? We are going to be a part of Paris Vintage Fair on March 12th and 13th which is a major meeting in the heart of the trendy district : Le Marais. This year’s theme will be « Space Age ». Likewise, we will exhibit for events hosted by an organization subsidised by Paris City Hall, promoting urban agriculture. Beyond its search for estheticism and singularity, Intro responds to an undeniable current concern: transforming based on what already exists, and also satisfies the need for responsible and economical shopping habits. We are willing to provide trendiness and contemporaneity to the ecology field in order to reach as many people as possible. We are also thinking about holding a contest with parisian fashion schools students in which they will have to transform and modernise vintage pieces

I N T E R V I E W

We are happy to introduce you

A LE S SAND RA G E NUAL DO illustrator living and working in London with Kira the English Setter and John the English man

81

Who is Alessandra Genualdo? Tell us briefly about yourself and how did you discover your passion for illustration. I’m from a small town in Italy, but I have been living in London for the past six years. Drawing has always been a part of my life, and at some point I realised I wanted it to become my job.

What does mean “beauty for you? I consider something beautiful in the sense of it being visually pleasing and having the potential to be turned into a picture. Beauty is quite an open concept for me, it can be anything associated with a positive feeling.

82

83

84

How did you choose the subjects for your illustrations? Who are the main characters of your pictures? What or who I draw is always really personal to me, it almost comes instinctively. Because it is so personal, most of my characters are women; sometimes women I would like to be, sometimes someone I have met and I forgot about, sometimes it’s me.

85

What fascinates you about the art world today? What are your main inspirations? I like how accessible art is, which has got its pros and cons. It is easy to find inspiration, but it can also be quite overwhelming. I do admire the work of many illustrators, but I also seek inspiration in the work of photographers, video-makers, poets, sculptors, textile designers.

What are the most important values you share as an artist? I try and share my very personal vision of things, and I try and be completely myself when I do so.

86

87

88

Where do you aspire to be in the near future? I would love to illustrate another book sometimes soon, and to find new application for my work.

Which contemporary illustrators or artists do you follow? There are many, some of them are Pipilotti Rist, Jonas Mekas, Golden Cosmos, Carson Ellis.

"CONTINUOUS LINE AND MEMORY WILL ALWAY How can you describe your own way of making art? How would you define your personal style? My personal practise is always developing and being refined. There’s never really one way of making a piece as I don’t like to define myself too much to one medium, so each piece will have a different journey. I would say the common elements are being in a good creative headspace, shutting myself in the studio with a good soundtrack and minimising distractions. For a while now my personal style and passion focuses around minimal line, but it’s always evolving. I think continuous line and memory will always be a common theme in my work though.

What does mean “beauty for you? Something that makes you stop and feel something; it goes deeper than the visual aesthetic. I think the world is full of so many tiny moments of it that go un-noticed. The beauty of unconventional things should be appreciated more.

Which concepts or ideas do you most enjoy conveying through your work? I like to convey truth and honesty, making my work relatable to people’s experiences. For someone to view my work and link it to a memory they have had makes each piece personal to them for different reasons, I love that.

129

How does your cultural environment influence your way of working? Being part of an Arts University has really helped me push myself and see new ways of working. It’s a hub of creative talent and you really feel you’re part of the new generation of artists. It also makes you realise the need for joint collaboration. I think it is important to share successes and help others network. In terms of living in London, ask anyone I know and they’ll tell you how much of a die-hard Londoner I am. There are so many opportunities and causes for inspiration that I’ll never tire of this city.

What fascinates you about the art world today? What are your main inspirations? I went to a talk last month about the role of the modern gallery and how it has changed in recent years with the rise of social media. It showed just how accessible the art world has become and how artists are really able to utilise platforms for exposure that they just wouldn’t have had before. I’m so inspired by artists Amalia Ulman and Rupi Kaur that use Instagram not only as a gallery for their work but also to create a whole new conversation about important contemporary topics.

Tell us about your creative background and story as an designer. How you discovered your passion for design? Well I guess the interest in fashion started early, as a child I remember copying the same model over and over again, drawing new clothing and patterns on her every time. I wish I had those drawings still, they would have made an awesome inspiration today.. After finishing high school I went to a small private tailoring school in Denmark. This was were I really realised that fashion was my path to follow. However, this school was very old-fashioned and there was not much room for any imagination and creativity, so the year after I moved to Spain and studied fashion at university there.

What is the concept behind your “Homegirl” collection? We just launched our first collection named ‘homegirl,’ as a reference to the feeling of freedom and safety within what we describe as ‘home’. The collection is based on a study of what makes the feeling of home, and it is aimed to make the wearer feel the same kind of comfort. It consists of modern basics and statement pieces, all in slightly oversized yet feminine silhouettes; clean and comfortable garments made to enhance the natural woman in a modern culture.

172

MAGAZINE

Where do you find your inspirations? I seriously find inspiration everywhere, and in the most unexpected places. At the moment I am obsessed with old books telling all kinds of stories of women. In general I find inspiration as well in my own feelings as in all visuals around me; this could be in museums or movies or when I travel. I take photos everywhere though! Last week I photographed a trashcan in an old classroom. Yesterday I took a photo of my neighbour’s door. I think that even my dog must be tired of me asking her to wait while I take a photo of something. Mostly they are random things that just sort of speak to me. Eventually I gather them all and suddenly they fit into some sort of context.

I am always looking to work with creative photographers and stylists from all over the world, and I would love to collaborate with textile-designers who has a cool new take on organic fabrics and

dyes. Besides that, I am playing with an idea about working with “real” girls who have their own signature on their social media and selfies etc. It would be interesting to do a project where they are free to style and capture the clothes in their own way. Then I would gather the photos and maybe use it as a second “real-life” lookbook.
