Who is Oda Eide? Tell us briefly about yourself and how did you discover an interest in fashion photography? I was born in the north of Norway, and grew up in a town called Asker, close to the capital Oslo. When I was a kid I loved playing dress up and would occasionally lay my outfits out and take photos of them (have found photographic evidence of this later on). Growing up I was creative and enjoyed reading, drawing, playing music and taking photos. As a teenager I got my first digital SLR and would often arrange photoshoots with my friends. I think my interest in fashion photography started with exploring the visual aspects of light and shadow, colour and composition. Later on this evolved into an interest in sharing stories and ideas. At some point I realised that I wanted to travel somewhere and explore photography further. I decided to move to England to study, so I built up a portfolio, applied, got accepted and went. At that point it felt like a natural choice, and it still does.

What is the key idea of your editorial submission story Sui Tang Romance? The key idea behind ‘Sui Tang Romance’ is about the strong female character of the story. I was looking for a female character to build the concept on, and Annabel (the stylist) suggested the story about Mulan. Through some research I found this specific story and built ideas on that, adding contemporary elements through interesting styling and makeup.

What is the most difficult or challenging aspect about your career as a photographer? I think the most challenging aspect must be to plan, to balance and to stay creative. As a freelancer you never know how next week is going to look like. This is of course great and exciting as every day is different, but it can also make you feel insecure. You have to be your own motivation, as no one will tell you to get up and go to work in the mornings. I am always excited about new ideas, and often start mentally planning new projects before I have even finished the current one. This is what keeps me going. However, it is important to sometimes take breaks to explore new places, read books and go to exhibitions, to recharge and gather new inspiration. Balance is key.

What fascinates you about the art world today? What are your main inspirations? The merge between fashion and art inspires me a lot. The work of artists such as Hart/Leshkina and Viviane Sassen are my main obsessions right now, and the natural and often almost random elements gives it a feeling of freedom while still being beautifully lit and with great compositions. I also love the work of Paul Jung, his images and videos are simple and minimal yet so beautiful and interesting.

Which particular work are you most proud of and why?

It is hard to say what I am most proud of, as I always look at every shoot and every job as something to improve for next time. I think in general to have done shoots for various magazines and brands as well as shooting for Graduate Fashion Week and London Fashion Week have been such great experiences and taught me a lot. I try to look at my work from an outside point of view and figure out what I could have done better to continue growing as a photographer.

What qualities do you look for and/or admire in the people you work with? The main qualities I look for when working with someone is ambition, passion and the ability to work hard. I love it when I meet people who share my motivation and who gets really excited about what they are doing. That is how you know that someone loves what they do, and that they will put as much into it as you.

Tell us a bit about your daily life. What takes your time mostly? I love being busy. The more I have going on, the more I get done. A typical day (if I am not shooting) could be meeting someone for coffee to discuss a new project, working on post production of shoots or videos or working on new ideas. I also often plan shoots or go to press events, exhibitions and talks with Annabel, the other part of A+O (Annabel + Oda) which is a creative duo we created recently. Teaming up with a stylist and working together on projects has been great as we can work together and bounce ideas off each other.

Which artists, designers or photographers would you like to collaborate with?

My dream is to shoot for Acne Studios. I love their brand, identity and aesthetic. As as I mentioned earlier I love Viviane Sassen (who has shot their campaigns for years). I would love to assist her, Nhu Xuan Hua or Paul Jung.

What is your favourite place in the world?

This is a difficult one... I love being in London because it is such a vibrant city with so many different places to explore. However, I always enjoy coming back to Norway’s fresh air, incredible nature and of course my family and friends there. In a way I think I am in the perfect situation right now, being able to spend time both places.

How would you like to see your career as a photographer evolving in future? My dream has always been to be able to travel to interesting places, meet new people and to do what I love. This is what I would like my career to consist of. I would love to spend some time working in different cities, such as New York and Tokyo. I also really want to spend some more time in Copenhagen, which is one of my favorite cities.

"EYES ARE THE FIRST PART IN THE PICTURE THAT YOU NOTICE AND IF IT CLOSED IT TURN TO FEEL A KIND OF MYSTERY, INNUENDO"

What fascinates you about the art world today and where do you find inspirations? Art is a great thing. Art is something that we can remain after us. Art can inspire someone for something. I can find inspiration everywhere around me. I like different textures in an urban environment, buffed graffiti. All of it creates new pictures. The beauty of nature, the beauty of lights and shades, of the art, of the female beauty – it is all around us and it inspires me. You need to be observant and very attentive – you need to see and feel around you different parts of the world. My emotions of it I express in some harmonious picture.

What concepts and emotions do you like conveying through your art? I like portraits where you cannot see person’s eyes, where some different things close eyes. Eyes are the first part in the picture that you notice and if it closed it turn to feel a kind of mystery, innuendo. I also like surrealism. I like something impossible and what we can’t see around us. You can find it in my work.
