WORK

FABRICations

Amsterdam (Netherlands)

TRAI NEER (1year)

I started to work at FABRICations on October 2016. My first contract was as an intern, but after it developed in something more. The studio is a multidisciplinary firm that focus its aims on several aspects like sustainability, resilient systems, vital economies and a lot more. Usually inside the office it is really common to work to several projects at the same time and at several different scale (from the regional planning to the interior design). My experience in that office was essential for me to develop certain skills, such as the independency on the work, improving my communication habits and a multidisciplinary approach on my designs. I mainly learn how to make design by research: I think that the challenge for the tomorrow is to design nice and dynamic building, enriched by the necessity to apply sustainable strategy to reduce emission and energy consumption. Working at Fabrications taught me how to deal with these themes in a serious and peculiar way, try always to experiment unconventional solution. I had big responsibility during my practice. I was involved in internal and external meeting and I participated to a workshop in Belgium in which local actors and citizens met together to discuss our proposal. I also worked in strictly collaboration with OMA, in their office, for the winning proposal Bijlmer Kwartier.

Munich (Germany)

JUNIOR ARCHITECT (6 months)

Working at Clemens Backmann Architekten was my first working experience. After my graduation, I received a job opportunity from Clemens Backmann, and I decided to move in Munich to be part of his team. The studio was composed by seven architects and the focus of the studio was on interior design. During my stay, I work for several projects in different countries. I was involved in the design and in the concept developments. There, I learn the art of model making and a technical approach on CAD drawings. I realized the technical drawing for forfeitures and for construction details, concepts diagrams and visualizations. I worked as a junior architect and my experience there was preparatory for me to be able to design interiors and know how to sell a project to clients.

WORKING EXPERIENCES BIJLMER KWARTIER Company: FABRICations Partners: OMA, LoLa landscape Team: Piero Vidoni, Ivo Clason, Marco Galasso

Year: 2016-2017

The Bijlmer Kwartier it’s a proposal for the development of the former prison in Amsterdam. The program request was of 120.000 sqm (90.000 smq of residential and 30.000 of new activities). In collaboration with OMA, I participated to the massing studies and the program distribution. In the advance stage of design, I focused on the proposal for the Green Tower and the sustainability strategy for the location. The project won the competition and now is going to be built. LABO KUST

Company: FABRICations Partners: Labo Ruimte, HNS Landscape Architects. Team: Piero Vidoni, Rens Wijnakker

Year: 2017

It was a research by design project organized by the Belgium government in order to re-qualify the entire Belgium cost. FABRICations choose some specific spot, and we investigate them, offering as an output several visions. As part of the research, I participated at the 3-day workshop in Blankenberge, with expert, spatial developers and local actors, to discuss the dense urban system along the coast. Oosternde was the second case studies. All the work in now available in the Labo Kust website.

BOSSHOUSE Company: FABRICations Partners: - Team: Piero Vidoni,

Year: 2017

Bosshouse was an ongoing project of the studio, the amplification of the holly day house of one of the partner of the studio. The house in an experimental wooden construction and when I was in charge for that project, my tasks were to deliver the design to the constructors, drawing the technical details and facilitating the estimation of the costs. I also improved the interiors and some minors design details. I made several temperature analysis to be sure that the operative temperature of the extension was inside the comfort limits.

TILBURG STATION The Tilburg University Station area is an undeveloped and un-designer segment of the city that deserve some particular attention, With this project we tried to install a direct connection between the station and the university campus; the intervention aimed to create a mixture between studying, living and working, in order to achieve a multi-functional, active area of the town, A re development of the social houses was necessary so that we ware able not to just provide a design proposal but also a small urban masterplan for the Station Universitat area. The project is still in progress.

NAGELE The competition asked for a new vision for the town of Nagale, Noordoostpolder. Nagale is one of the few town completely designed according to the CIAM principles. We find out that the plan was not completely realized and some elements did not work as they should. Furthermore, the starting brief asked for a new vision in order to position Nagele as a leader in the energy transition and bring the famous town as a landmark for the innovation once again. The proposal applies a multi functional sustainable energy system located in some niche in the border of the town, creating production- leisure area all around the residential area.

VINOTEK The interior project was located in Liechtenstein. CBA were in charge to design the interiors of an entire building design by a well-known studio. We approach at the project in a fancy way. The company is involved in blood analysis, so that was our inspiration. We design some giant bubbles in the paving; they are not just aesthetic, but they also underline functions and have different colors for different floors. A mixture of wood and synthetic material were used in order to create a related but sophisticated atmosphere.

MAN The truck factory MAN was going to recover some areas of its primary factory. Due to the automation, a big part of the industry was inactive and the company asked for a new design. CBA suggested a t a big canteen for the employers inside the industrial factory. Our first idea was re-use containers in order to maintain an industrial atmosphere inside the location. A specific arrangement of container was necessary in order to create a stimulating space in two levels, able to host 500 employees at the same time.and wood as the main material for the fornitures

RIS The Bayern Bank decided to have a Vinotek for his employers at the ground floor of his headquarter. For this interior project we decided to opt for a general solution that involved three different configurations, based on the needs of specific moment, for the different uses of the Vinotek. We used a combination of tables and drawers to organize the space and show the wines. In the ceiling we decided to place a blowup picture of a fresco located in Palazzo Ducale, Venice

the new development plan was designed to create a high density housing complex while preserving historical elements, adopting cutting edge sustainable strategies and creating a new high quality urban environment for the city of Amsterdam. The Bijlmerbajes Complex was awarded by the jury 95/100 points and selected for the first prize in the public competition. The project, developed for AM, AT Capital and Cairn , raised the attention of all the main national and international media, including Parool, Telegraaf, fd.nl, Nu, Archdaily and Designboom and many others. A symbolic center for the new development, where all the sustainable systems of the masterplan come together in an iconic public space

The masterplan followed two main phases. In a first phase our sustainability scan was applied to the existing construction. Through the lenses of our scan we assessed the historical, social, cultural, environmental value of the site, and we quantified the potential of a new intervention and how to achieve it.

In the second phase, the design team collaborated in creating a masterplan that would provide proactive dynamics to implement high density housing complex with cutting edge sustainable features. As a result, we produced a holistic plan, which preserves part of the historical presence of the prison, and implements new building clusters that directly interact with it. The whole complex is integrated and connected to the rest of the city according to the six themes of healthy urbanism, so that the impact of the building on the environment is minimized, while its benefits for the city and its inhabitants are maximized.

High in the city, after a steep climb, you look down the building on which you stand. Looking down you see the contrast between greenery and the plants that provide the complex with clean water, compost, heat and electricity.

Looking up, you see the wings that wind the wind along the building to efficiently placed wind turbines. And looking down at the square in front of the tower, you’ll see clean water flowing out after a rainstorm.

A small independent unit is located in a residential quarter in Holden. The location is quite peculiar, it is surrounded by high trees and you can reach the place just though a ground beat street. Here is situated a small, independent house of 50 smq, with 2 bedrooms, a kitchen, a living room and 2 separated bathrooms. One of the partners of the studio bought the house with the intention to renovate it and make a status out of it. The principal intervention was to design an addition of around 40 smq in order to be able to accommodate a second family. From the beginning we choose wood as the main material. The extension is characterized by the use of a modulo, composed by a fixed glass panel and by an insulated wooden panel that can be open.

The facade of the building is self-supporting and it is directly anchored to the concrete foundations. Our assumption for the structural elements is a 44mm thick sheet material, a composite plate

of 2x 22mm plywood, of type to be determined. In all the exterior surfaces we apply the Japanese shou-sugi-ban technique (burning the most exterior skin of the wood.) the hou-

se is the manifesto of what

the architecture should be. Building means thinking at first. The connection with the land suggests the project,it’s a constant dialogue between nature and ambitions

The truck factory was going to reconvert some areas so the company asked to the studio to design a big canteen for the employers inside the industrial factory. Our first idea was to re-use containers in order to maintain an industrial atmosphere inside the plant. We adopt a configuration of two different types of container, arranged in two separate volumes. We use also black as the main colour and wood as the main material for the fornitures. The mixture of re used items and design object was really stimulating and the canteen.

As we know highways have just one basic function: allowing the passage of cars from one part to another. Thanks to new technology, such as self-driving cars and drones, the use of highways is going to decrease soon. What to do so? Is it possible to add a new function to this giant mono function structure? Why don’t we collect all the facilities that surround the highway above it? Let’s use the land for farming and living and Re-use waste materials to build something new. Let’s be directly connected with the transport network just living above it. Let’s enjoy the uncontaminated view of nature ...

Recycled Tower The Recycled tower is made by all the components that we are used to waste everyday (metal, plastic, glass, etc.). We can say that it originats from a dump and its purpose is to reassigned the place of all the functions (factories, offices, warehouses) that partially ruin our landscape.

When I started to work with Villa Muller I immediately noticed that the interior spatial arrangement is rather complex compared to the exterior skin. However, the complexity is organised around the space within a rectangular prism; The interior result an interlocking of different spaces against each other, like a big bang of surfaces and lines. According to Loos, every house must show in the exterior a quiet and simple look, the interior instead should represent the owner’s taste and status. We can identify this attitude in the figure of a cube which hide in its inside an all universe.

Loos pavilion Due to the complexity of this universe, I firstly approach the house taking out a fragment, so I immediately identify what was the heart of the house: the boudoir. The Raumplan stairs wraps around the boudoir, in turn the house and its interlocking volumes wraps around the Raumplan stairs, creating a double layer of protection for the boudoir, the heart of the Muller House.

Being surrounded by trees provide a strange feeling; nature is something unpredictable, wild and undefined. Trees don’t have any plan about where and when grow, expand. The city is the exact opposite, everything is regulated and predictable, there is no space for surprising opportunities. The best example of what happen when we try to combine natural and human behaviors is a tree house: a living space that is a defined form in an unpredictable environment. At the beginning of my design process I tried to imagine a house that is capable of growing randomly as a tree, creating thanks to this uncertainty tons of opportunities for a better living.

Surfaces house The structure and the house are two separated identity, as a tree and a house on in. Temporary surfaced are placed according to certain volunteer. The living is organized according to a daily rout, it starts from the top room, the bedroom, and it develops sequently from that point. We can enjoy a 360 view in and outside the forest while you are walking to your breakfast at the morning.

I always thought that freedom is first an obligation,,not a right. I don’t like the idea that s me the right to be free; instead I’m more inclined to believe that to be free is my own responsibility: I have to fight to be free,,I have to maintain my freedom and I have to care about my freedom when somebody wants to take it away from me. That imply that I have to fight for it when it is necessary,,that’ makes you a Man. What was important at the beginning of my design was the necessity to realize a landmark. The location is jutting thought a water square in which few elements emerge in the landscape: my tower should be the completion of this view.

Freedom Tower As a landmark,,the tower should be the simplest as possible. That’s why it is composed by a main body,,two legs,,two arms and a lighting head.; In fact, when you see the freedom tower from the front, it appears like a human figure holding something with its arms. The archetype of freedom has been often represented in history as a man caring the entire world on his shoulders. I wanted that the tower reflects that idea,,that gesture. From the sides,,instead, this suggestion disappear, and the tower manifests clearly its composition.

THE PATH Is where the visitors start their journey. Life is not a straight line. so also the thin cantilever footbridge bends and turn to make the path more difficult for the pedestrian. At the middle of the journey. the visitors are immersed into an artificial mist ,spreading from the main structure. At this point, the light box is perceived as a blurring light into the mist.

THE UNIVERSE When you enter in the light box, you are totally immersed in the darkness. Just some holes, placed in the walls of the hemisphere allows the light to come in. You will find yourself to be in the middle of the universe. There is no distinction or discrimination in the space because everything is dark and you can not see and judge the others. All men are equal and you can feel free, of choosing your position in the universe.

In this workshop the visiting professor talked about space and matter: the idea of house divided into living, relaxing, sharing and eating spaces. The house is designed as a large stock of matter, a huge monolith in which the spaces of the house are dug, such as inside a cave; in reference to work of Eduardo Chillida in Monte Tindaya. The spaces develop orizontally, We had the desire of unveiling, bringing to the surface the wooden foundations of Venice, and build the 5 spaces below the field, using only light surface to illuminate the environment.

Venice house The spaces are identified depending on the coverage, using barrel vaults, domes, and prisms. The outdoor space (coverage- garden as you wish to see) is almost an installation and aims to bring back the life in the second largest camp of Venice, who today lives a solitary life.

The project aims to value the ruins of the castle in Shoacwe (Poland) through the creation of an exhibition - congress pavilion. The iron frame was opposed to the brick of the ruin, so as to detach the two different periods. Columns and decorative elements are used to mark features of the past, such as the recreation of the two windows in the opening of the prospectus. The metal structure uses the more traditional elements in metallic carpentry as tubular columns, H and rectangular beams. The two central beams hold up the overhanging roof of the second room, and are balanced by bringing the weight of the casing cover, linked to the second order of beams.

PORTO MARGHERA CHANGES

We took our inspiration to the trincea; this kind of construction is modular and can bextended at infinitum. Additionally, we decided to englobe all the main existing hubs in Porto Marghera. The lines are imposed on the territory aggressively. Each segment of the trench is composed of differentypes of Hangar, with different shapes and functions.

Fast & Huge

Creating a building of 10 km could results unnatural, so we designedifferent curves and highs, in the way that the binding could be mixed with the ground, becoming a series of artificial hills, canals and mountains. From Venice the 10 Km buildingiscompletedmixedwiththemountainsintheback

CHAPTER 01

The Workshop tried to requalify Porto Marghera, one of the main industrial, chemical and oil zone in Italy. The Area is situated in Venice’s lagoon. Sebastian Irarrazaval believe that for big changes is essential to approach the problem withbigideas.Asaconsequencetheworkshopproposes10solutions,butwiththesame length : 10 km.

Taken as a whole, the costruction presents itself as a network of huge links, the greater part of which are raised above the ground. On the ground, a second network, traffic. The ‘links’ are areas generally devoid of building, though with the exception of centers of pro-duction and the installations that have no place in the sector social space,

like, for in-stance, transmitter antennae, and perhaps drilling rigs, historic monuments. Part of these vacant areas is given over to dif-ferent working of the ground itself and to rearing livestock;

... In principium... architecture

of monuments was the only way to create order, to lay a foundation. The only way to operate was to accept all conscious and unconscious components and consider architecture as a problem with infinite unknowns, assuming a number of them as constants... Constants were assumed to be axes of symmetry, the golden section, elementary forms, archetypes of experience. The architecture of monuments – architecture as the magical image of man – was an exorcism against the architecture of detail and the picturesque.
