from the editor There are many ways to celebrate a wedding anniverary but I suspect abseiling down the side of a building wouldn’t be the top of many lists. However, this is exactly what Eaton couple Mark and Catherine Jeffries did to mark their Ruby anniversary - raising vital funds for the N&N Hospitals Charity. The couple donned hard hats and took the plunge down the side of The Forum, as you can see from the wonderful photos on the front of this edition. Well done to Mark and Catherine and you can read the full story on page 8.

Volunteers work to restore woodland Volunteers have had no time to rest on their laurels, having been busy removing invasive scrub from the community woodland behind Cringleford’s Willow Centre. They have also been carrying out some meadow management work and will be planting some spring bulbs later this month to bring some extra colour to the area. Charity TCV (The Conservation Volunteers) is working with Cringleford Parish Council to enhance biodiversity in some of the woodland and grassland areas around the Willow Centre on Willowcroft Way (off Dragonfly Lane). The project has begun with raking up cut grass in the meadow areas to maintain the habitat for wildflowers and will continue in coming weeks with the removal of much of the invasive laurel from the community woodland area behind the sports pitches. TCV’s Team Leader Mark Webster said: “This is a lovely woodland with a nice mix of mature trees, but the understorey is being completely smothered by invasive laurel bushes, which are spreading all over the site and cutting out the light.” The volunteers will be restoring the woodland habitat by cutting back the laurel, then planting spring-flowering bulbs and a variety of native shrubs to provide nectar for insects and berries for birds. People are welcome to join these activities, which will take place from 10.15am to 3pm on Mondays October 23 and 30.

HARD AT WORK: Volunteers from TCV work at the community woodland.

Sharp new skills put to good use Two volunteers have been putting some new-found skills to good work by scything a meadow at Eaton Park. Helen Mitchell, Chair of the Friends of Eaton Park, and Sarah Scott used the traditional method to carry out work at the Little Meadow beside Eaton Park Community Centre. Both Helen and Sarah have taken part in courses run by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust and the park held a special scything day during the summer. They said it was exciting to put their learning into practice and they were planning to plant wildflower seeds this month to ensure a vibrant meadow full of flowers, grasses and wildlife in the spring. They also left an area of the meadow uncut to act as refuge for wildlife. CUT ABOVE: Sarah Scott (left) and Helen Mitchell after they carried out some scything in Eaton Park.

Bid to create Eaton art trail as part of county-wide event A call has gone out for artists and makers in the Eaton area to come together to create a trail for the 2024 Norfolk Open Studios. Each year, as part of the Open Studios event, artists and makers exhibit their creations, and can make sales to visitors, in their homes, workshops and garages on three autumn weekends at the end of September and beginning of October. Now a group has been set up in a bid to create a trail around Eaton Village for next year’s event. Ceramic artist Vicki Bailey exhibited in open studio art trails in Bristol and London before moving to Norwich and is part of this new group.

ART ON SHOW: Ceramic artist Vicki Bailey (above) is shown with some examples of her work. Also pictured is local artist Paula Smith with a selection of the necklaces she has made. Vicki said: “There are talented creators in Eaton but, so far, the nearest Norfolk Open Studios venue clusters have been in the Golden Triangle and Hethersett, with none in NR4. “The Norfolk Open Studios organisation annually produces free booklets giving details of all makers and venues involved. Participants tend to get more visitors when there are several venues near to each other, with two or more exhibitors in each.”

Those taking part can be involved in any form of art or craft. It could be jewellery, paintings, pottery, tapestries, mosaics, greeting cards, ceramic art, photographs, sculpture, prints, woodcarvings, drawings, glasswork, textile wall hangings – or any other types of visual creation. Anybody interested in taking part in an Eaton Open Studios Art Trail should contact Vicki by phone on 07712 191831 or by email at vicki.p.bailey@gmail.com

ADVERTISER’S FEATURE

Introducing acupuncture for neurological conditions A new diagnosis with a serious or degenerative condition can be devastating, especially if there is no hope of recovery or improvement. Eaton Acupuncturist Beverley Dickins who has 40 years in practice and 43 years of continued training, said: “I really felt for those people. Although I was used to my clients with arthritis, depression, back, lung, skin and energy problems, women’s health difficulties, and so many other intractable conditions telling me the acupuncture had made them so much better, there was more to do”. So, when Beverley had the opportunity to train in Neurological Acupuncture, she said she jumped at the chance. It is now making a great difference to to those clients with

Neurological and degenerative conditions. She said: “I had watched Neurological Acupuncture practised while in China. It’s a new development that is a real gamechanger for serious, degenerative, and neurological conditions. “The Chinese are using it to achieve poststroke recovery with Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis (MS), muscular dystrophy, and other progressive diseases, severe depression, severe insomnia, difficulties with speech, balance, movement, bowels, and much more. Sounds impossible. doesn’t it? And the Chinese are doing it right now.” Beverley added: “I’m so thrilled with the results my patients are getting. Within four sessions of Neurological Acupuncture, a gentleman with severe post-stroke balance loss was able to walk away, beautifully balanced.” One of Beverley’s patients, Catherine, takes up the story. “Most people wouldn’t believe that a few needles can reduce pain, calm troubled minds, and make you feel generally better. But it does work. “I came to Beverley with severe back pain, feeling very unwell, and with severe sleep disturbance, and a Parkinson’s

diagnosis. After acupuncture the pain in my back has almost gone, I feel so much better, and sleep well most nights”. Another patient, Harriet, agrees: “After my first acupuncture session I thought ‘Wow!’ A few tiny nips, and I already feel so much more relaxed and refreshed.” Harriet came after a life-changing MS diagnosis. Now, after the acupuncture with Beverley, she says her MS symptoms are “already greatly reduced”, and she’s “feeling so much better”. “The last word on Acupuncture and Neurological Acupuncture goes to Catherine: ‘I can tell you it does work. Give it a try - you may be surprised at the difference it will make in your life’.” Contact Beverley Dickins on 01603 451229, or email beverleydickins@ yahoo.co.uk. Free, 20-minute find-out appointments are available. Beverley Dickins, Lic. Ac., B. Ac., M.B.Ac.C., M.Sc., B.A. Hons (Cantab)

Couple take the plunge for their wedding anniversary A weekend away, dinner for two or a day out in the countryside are traditional ways to celebrate a ruby wedding anniversary. However, something a little different was on the cards for Eaton couple Mark and Catherine Jeffries, who decided 40 years of marriage was best celebrated by abseiling off the side of The Forum in Norwich in support of the N&N Hospitals Charity. Mark and Catherine, who appear on the front of this edition, were among 35 people who took part in the charity’s third abseil - raising thousands of pounds to support projects to benefit patients and staff across the hospital. Mark, who was a non-executive directive at NNUH for eight years and Chair of the N&N Hospitals Charity Committee, said: “Having seen first-hand what a difference the N&N Hospital Charity makes, this was a great opportunity to raise funds and support its work. “Catherine has been wanting to do an abseil for a long time so what better time than our 40th anniversary?” Catherine said: “It was lovely to abseil to the accompaniment of the wonderful bells of St Peter Mancroft Church. “The equipment was first rate. A big thank you to Dave Talbot and his team for preparing us so well.” Both were abseiling for the first time although they have previously undertaken parachute jumps. The team from Dave Talbot, Adventure Events provided full training and calmed the nerves before the abseilers made their descent.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY: Mark and Catherine Jeffries took part in a charity abseil as part of their wedding anniversary celebrations. Among those taking part were staff supporting NICU, the Boudicca Breast Cancer Appeal and a team from the hospital’s phlebotomy department. The event organisers also welcomed a young French exchange student in Norwich for the weekend and a 76-year-old daredevil, who made a last-minute decision to sign up on the day. Lynn Crombie, from the Hospitals Charity, said: “With donations and sponsorship still coming in, a final figure has yet to be confirmed but we expect that the event

will have raised several thousand pounds which will benefit staff and patients at the N&N. “We’d like to thank everyone who took part, came along and supported their friends and colleagues and donated to our charity." Another abseil is due to take place at the hospital in December with optional fancy dress. Anyone interested in signing up, should email fundraising@nnuh.nhs.uk

Hospital’s charity champions are revealed The N&N Hospitals Charity has announced the winners of the 2023 Charity Champions awards. The winners were announced at the Annual General Meeting at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. The awards thank members of the community for going over and above in support of the hospitals in their own unique way. The Inspiration Award went to Louisa Dye, who walked 500 miles and raised some £8,000 for cancer services at the Trust in memory of her parents Stuart Clarke, who died from pancreatic cancer in 2006 and Christine, who died after being diagnosed with breast cancer and its secondaries in 2021. The Young Persons Award went to 8th Norwich Sea Scouts (Cubs Section) who raised almost £1,000 for the Jenny Lind Children’s Hospital from their bob-a-job week. The Director’s Award was won by Chris

8

Johnson, who completed the London Landmarks Half Marathon in 2022, and the Paris and London Marathons in 2023. Chris has raised close to £3,000 for the Boudicca Breast Cancer Appeal, inspired by his wife Gemma’s breast cancer diagnosis in 2020. The residents at Doughty’s won the Community Award for their long-standing support for the charity. Staff and patients are always grateful to receive the knitted items, the tubs of chocolates at Christmas and donations to the Trust’s food bank. Roys of Wroxham won the Corporate Award for supporting the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Thanks to store customers and staff, Roys raised £9,632 during 2022. Norwich School won the Schools Award after raising £3,000 for the Boudicca Breast Cancer Appeal. The money was raised through events organised during the school’s Lent term. The AGM also heard about a fundraising

The stroke and radiology teams are in the advanced stages of launching a mechanical thrombectomy service at NNUH, which has been described as a “game changer” and involves the removal of a clot from the blood vessel using catheters (small tubes) inserted from the patient’s leg into the brain. Plenty of pedal power on show at social cycling club An Eaton-based cycling club is going from strength to strength with its last social ride seeing the biggest turnout yet. Nineteen riders set out from Eaton Park in beautiful sunny conditions for a ride to Mulbarton. The Eaton Park Community Cycling Club rides out once a month on Saturday mornings and Wednesday evening gettogethers are also held throughout the year. Organiser Stuart Beard said: “We now have four trained ride leaders so we’re able to split the largest turnout into two separate groups, which is much more manageable, setting off with a few minutes’ interval. “This group included six newcomers, including another tandem with a stoker with visual impairment, and several regulars weren’t able to make it. “We feel pleased we’ve gone from strength to strength. “It’s more than just cycling; it’s about community, socializing, and enhancing mental and physical health.” Those involved in the ride to Mulbarton enjoyed refreshments at the village’s

New project to keep students safe at night

PARK LIFE: School pupils enjoy a special day at Eaton Park. Pictures: STUART BEARD PHOTOGRAPHY

Pupils get a closer look at park’s many attractions Children have enjoyed spending time exploring Eaton Park as part of an organised visit with the Friends of Eaton Park school group. The Friends have a long-standing relationship with Bluebell Primary School and this was the first opportunity for the new members of the school’s Ash Class to take a closer look at the park and its many attractions. Stuart Beard, vice-chair of the Friends

of Eaton Park, said: “For this visit we used the time just walking around looking at the trees and the park in general, getting to know each other’s names and increasing the children’s familiarity with what is available in the park. They particularly loved exploring on the dry fountain and spotting the enormous fish in the lily pond.” The children also got to see how the tennis courts were being refurbished and enjoyed seeing the RC speedboat.

A new initiative is aiming to get University of East Anglia students home safely after a night out. Norwich business ABC Taxis has worked with the Students’ Union at the UEA to launch the Safe Rides initiative. The project ensures that all UEA students can get a lift home when it is dark, even if they don’t have any money for the fare on them. They can book a journey with ABC Taxis which will be covered by their Students’ Union, before repaying them once they have been contacted. By phoning 01603 666333, quoting ‘University of East Anglia Safe Rides’, a vehicle will be sent to stranded students where they must give a valid student number to the driver. Members of staff at the Students’ Union are fully trained to offer support and advice about the service and take payment. Chris Harvey, Regional Director for ABC Taxis, said: “Moving to a new area and starting university can be daunting, so we are here to support students in Norwich as they find their feet; our emergency service will ensure they get home safe without worry over finding the fare.” Visit https://www.abctaxisnorwich. co.uk/student-hub-2/ to find out more.

EATON CHORAL SOCIETY

WELCOME RETURN: The Eaton Choral Society performs at a previous concert.

Concert date Our next concert will be in St Andrew’s Church on Sunday, November 19 at 7pm. The programme will be ‘I was Glad’ by Hubert Parry (which was sung at the Coronation of King Charles III), two anthems by Herbert Howells and ‘Requiem’ by Maurice Duruflé. This is a beautiful early 20th Century work largely based on plainsong themes. As usual, admission will be free but there will be a retiring collection. Concerts such as these are quite expensive to stage and we therefore ask for you to be generous in your contributions in order to support the continuing work of the Choir. The machine was installed thanks to the generosity of the community. A defibrillator gives a high energy electric shock to the heart of someone who is in cardiac arrest and can play a vital role in saving that person's life. One of the church members had suggested getting a defibrillator placed on the side of the hall and Rev Graham Wilkins, vicar of St Peter’s in Cringleford, said: “We thought it was a great idea - what better way to show love to someone in one of the worst times of their life. Residents, landowners, community groups and schools are being encouraged to join a new push aimed at increasing the number of trees planted throughout the county. Around 40,000 trees are available to order at a reduced price, offering an opportunity to make an impact as “one in a million”. Norfolk County Council pledged to plant one million trees over a five-year period and is well on the way to fulfilling that promise. Tree packs will be available at seven collection points across the county. Eric Vardy, cabinet member for environment and waste, said: “Whether it’s in your garden, in a local park or even within a community space, every single tree matters. “With over 270,000 trees planted since 2019, I am proud of the progress we have made. Now we are determined to achieve an even greater impact in the upcoming 2023/24 planting season.” Tree packs can be ordered online and will be ready for collection in the planting season between December and February. Once they have been planted they will be mapped online as part of the One Million Trees project. To order a tree or to find out more, visit www.norfolk.gov.uk/subsidisedtreepacks

Trials are launched for new breath test for lung cancer A Cringleford man has tasken part in a clinical trial of a new breath test designed for the early detection of lung cancer. The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (NNUH) has become the first global site to recruit patients to a clinical trial being run by Owlstone Medical (Owlstone). The study has been designed to support development of a breath test to help identify patients with lung cancer at a much earlier stage to increase the chances of curative therapies. This includes the identification of lung cancer in patients without symptoms and in those who have abnormal findings on radiological imaging such as CT scans. Trevor Jackson, 70, from Cringleford, took part in the trial

earlier this month at Quadram Institute Clinical Research Facility at Norwich Research Park. He said: “I had pneumonia at Christmas and ended up having a CT scan which showed something on my lung. “Luckily, I’ve been given the all-clear now, and they asked if I’d be interested in taking part in this research. “I was more than happy because you never know, it might help someone else.” Trevor was recruited at NNUH by Professor Eleanor Mishra’s team at the National Institute for Health and Care Research Norfolk Clinical Research Facility based at the Quadram Institute. Trevor was the first patient to take part in phase two of the trial of the test. Prof Mishra, Respiratory Consultant and Principal

VITAL RESEARCH: Pictured (left to right) are Prof Eleanor Mishra, Trevor Jackson, Lisa Hudig (Clinical Research Nurse), and Bethany Bridgwood (Clinical Trials Assistant). Investigator, said: “Lung cancer has the highest death rate for any cancer in the UK. “The earlier we catch lung cancer, the more likely we are to be able to cure people. This study has the potential to

enable much earlier lung cancer diagnosis and, therefore, save many lives.” In total up to 350 people will take part in the study across three sites in Europe and six sites in the UK.

Civic charity receives Festive flower club big boost from railway meeting Hundreds of pounds have been handed over to the Lord Mayor’s charity after a special day of fundraising at Eaton Park’s miniature railway. As reported in the last edition, Lord Mayor and Eaton city councillor James Wright joined lots of other passengers as the railway held a special charity day on August 28. All the revenue from the day, totalling £767.50, was donated to Norfolk Community Foundation (NCF) and a further £100 was raised in a bucket collection. Representatives from the Norwich & District Society of Model Engineers (NDSME) and the NCF visited the Lord Mayor’s parlour at City Hall for the cheque presentation. The Lord Mayor Mr Wright and Sheriff of Norwich, Jan Sheldon, chose the NCF and its Nourishing Norfolk initiative as

Concert series to feature work of iconic composer The final performance in this year’s Eaton Concert Series features an iconic work for voice and piano by Franz Schubert. Winterreise or ‘Winter Journey’ is a song cycle comprising 24 poems by Wilhelm Müller set to music by Schubert. The concert will take place at St Andrew’s Church from 3pm on Sunday, November 12. Eaton Concert Series Artistic Director Gill Seaton said: “The poetry is written in the voice of a young man who, upon seeing his beloved marry another, sets out on foot in the deepest winter to escape memories of her.

WONDERFUL WINTER: This paiting, by Austrian artist Otto Nowak, depicts Schubert. The concert will take place at St Andrew’s Church (bottom left). Picture: STUART BEARD

“His heart is broken and his life is a torment of memories, dreams and present pain. Schubert wrote the work towards the end of his life when his health was failing and his music perfectly depicts the torrent of emotion with exquisite control of harmonies and melodic flow.” Performing this work is bass Darren Smith who will be accompanied by pianist

Anne Applin. Darren has sung most of the major oratorio works with choral societies in East Anglia and abroad. He has also sung many roles in operas for Suffolk Opera, Opera Live and Holland Park Opera, whilst Anne’s experience as a pianist includes accompanying and ensemble playing, along with examining, broadcasting, recording, adjudicating and acting as a consultant for music publishers. She is also an accomplished teacher. Admission to the November 12 concert will be £15 for adults, £7.50 for students and children admitted free of charge. For further details of this and future concerts, please visit www. eatonconcertseries.co.uk

Could you give the gift of a lift as a volunteer driver? Norfolk County Council is looking for people in Eaton and Cringleford to become volunteer drivers to help others. The Travel Norfolk Car Scheme plays a crucial role in ensuring eligible adults can reach vital health, social, and wellbeing services. Passengers contribute 45p per mile towards the cost of the journey, plus any car parking fees. One dedicated volunteer, Jeanne Heal, said she enjoyed the role and urged others to join up. She added: “I also love people and enjoy driving so this really is an ideal for me. As a volunteer driver I enable people to keep various medical appointments, necessary shopping trips, visit relatives in hospital or care homes. “People can be anxious travelling, I enjoy chatting, listening to people and sharing experiences with passengers which seems to put them at their ease. Without the service, passengers have expressed that they would be unable to attend appointments.

22

“In the past 18 months I have volunteered with Travel Norfolk Car Scheme, every journey has been a pleasure, it is satisfying knowing that passengers feel safe during their journeys.” Councillor Graham Plant, Norfolk County Council’s cabinet member for highways and infrastructure said: “Our volunteers are invaluable and play a vital role in helping others across the county. “Their time helps to give others access to services they need and creates a community that can remain independent for longer. “We’re looking for more volunteers to support our Travel Norfolk Transport Schemes, so if you have some time to spare and feel that you could help, we’d really like to hear from you.” t If you’re interested in getting involved, visit www.norfolk.gov.uk/volunteerdrivers or contact the Travel Norfolk Car Scheme directly at 0344 800 8020.

Estate planning for blended families As blended families have become increasingly common, so estate planning becomes a crucial consideration to ensure the smooth transfer of assets to loved ones. Blended families face unique challenges when it comes to estate planning due to the complex dynamics involved. Considerations such as protecting the interests of biological children from previous relationships, providing for a new spouse or partner, and addressing potential conflicts among family members require thoughtful planning. Updating your will

A well-drafted will ensures that your wishes regarding asset distribution are clearly outlined. Failing to update your will after entering a new relationship may lead to unintended consequences, with assets potentially passing to the wrong beneficiaries or even causing legal disputes. When updating your will, it is essential to consider the following points: t Spousal/civil partner inheritance rights

In our legal system, a spouse or civil partner may have an expectation of benefiting from your estate and failing to

Drayton & Taverham Eaton & Cringleford

make adequate provision for them may lead to them seeking to make a claim against your estate. A legal advisor can advise you on the merits of such a claim, safeguards that can be made, or can make recommendations of structures you might use to achieve your wishes. t Provision for biological children

If you have children from a previous relationship, you may wish to ensure that they are adequately provided for. This can be achieved through specific provisions in your will, such as leaving assets or establishing trusts to benefit your children. t Providing for a new spouse or partner Many individuals want to provide for their new spouse or partner while also ensuring that their children receive their fair share. Various strategies, such as life interest trusts or discretionary trusts, can be implemented to strike a balance between the two. Seeking legal advice will help you determine the most suitable approach based on your circumstances. t Guardianship of minor children

If you have minor children, it’s vital to address guardianship arrangements in your

will. Clearly designating who will assume guardianship responsibilities ensures that your children will be cared for according to your wishes. Communication and managing expectations

Open and honest communication is essential. Discussing your wishes and intentions with all relevant parties can help manage expectations and minimise potential conflicts. Consider involving family members, especially those directly affected by your estate plan, in the discussions. Seek professional guidance

An experienced solicitor can provide tailored advice, help you understand the legal implications, and ensure that your estate plan is comprehensive and legally sound. Regular review of your estate plan

It’s crucial to periodically review and update your estate plan and will to reflect any changes in your family dynamics, financial situation, or legislation.

Contact our Wills, Tax, and Probate team on 01603 677077 or email info@ spiresolicitors.co.uk to plan for your future.

Thanks for gift of life A poignant film has shown an emotional meeting between a donor’s family and a man who received their son’s heart. The film was produced by the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals to support Organ Donation Week 2023. Norfolk businessman Kitt Blake was 30 years old and able to help four people when he died in 2020. Tim Head, 64, from Northamptonshire, received Kitt’s heart and Kitt’s family were able to hear it beating in Tim’s chest. Tim was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy and was ill for five years including an eight-month hospital stay before the transplant in the spring of 2020. The event was captured on film as the two families wanted to share their experiences in their support of organ donation.

Even though organ donation is now an opt out system, it is still vital to have those conversations with family members, so they can support your decision should the unthinkable happen. Tim said: “It’s been a fantastic day that I’ll never forget. My first anniversary was their first anniversary and I just felt like I had to write to them to thank them. Even from day one, I had this feeling we’d meet up one day. I just knew it. “There were a lot of emotions leading up to today. We just want them to know that we do really appreciate it every single day. Jane listening to my heart was very emotional and I’m glad she listened. Everyone is at ease now.” Jane said: “It meant a lot to meet Tim today. He sent us a letter about a year after the organ donation and we were

MOVING MOMENT: Jane Blake listens to her son Kitt’s heart beating for Tim Head. Picture: KEIRON TOVELL. really happy to know that he was so well. He said it would be lovely to meet up when the time was right and I knew I wanted to. “To see that he’s happy, well and enjoying his life together with his family was marvellous and something that they may not otherwise have had. They’re a lovely family and deep down I think I knew they would be.” Jane added: “When Kitt was

in hospital and we were asked about organ donation, my heart sunk. I didn’t know what to say at first. However, Kitt was someone who always helped others, so we knew it was the right thing. We had to think quickly, but I’m glad we made the right decision.” Find out more about Organ Donation at: https://www. organdonation.nhs.uk/
