from the editor Hello! And welcome to our last merged edition of Just Regional. A lot of you have said how much you enjoyed reading about news from other towns and we are so glad you’ve enjoyed them. But usual service will resume from next month, so we want to hear from you to make sure your local magazine is as full of local news, events and information as possible. Let us know how your groups, societies, clubs, teams and schools have been doing – we’ve been featuring a lot of activities online and in these magazines, so we know you haven’t been idle during the lockdown!

Tracey Bagshaw Editor editor@justregional.co.uk @JustRegional

Both Drayton and Hellesdon parish councils have been busy working to keep their communities safe and provided for, with deliveries, the provision of money for PPE and making sure anyone needing help got it. There’s more on pages 9 and 13. Youngsters and residents in Sprowston, for example, have been putting together a fabulous art trail, highlighting the damage plastic can do to our wildlife. You may just have time to catch it – find out more on page 5.

Hellesdon has new equipment in two of its play areas (page 9); Sheringham skatepark is open once more (page 5); and work has started on the new cancer centre at Cromer Hospital. You can read about that on page 13.

And with the summer holidays under way, our beaches are proving as popular as ever – but if you’re heading to Cromer or Sheringham, or anywhere on our lovely coastline, please take care. The RNLI has some good advice on page 7.

@justregional

Rugby training has also started again, so sport is coming back to life, too! The regular report on the North Walsham rugby teams (pictured) is on page 19. Enjoy reading the magazine, and we look forward to hearing from you all soon!

Fcromer pier lights up to highlight theatres

Cromer Pier joined several venues around the country which were lit up with red lights to draw attention to the plight of theatres, concert halls and other entertainment venues during the covid-19 lockdown. Say goodbye to the Rev Jack After just over four years working in the Aylsham Team of Churches, the Rev Jack Branford is moving on to a new post as Chaplain at Gresham's School, in Holt. He and his family are hoping to say goodbye to as many parishioners as possible at special leaving services at the church on Sunday, August 2. The first service will be a traditional Holy Communion service at 8am and there will be an informal outdoor service in the churchyard at 10.15am. Jack said everyone was welcome to come and join in the fun. He also pointed out that public health precautions and physical distancing measures would be in place at all services in the churchyard and the building, so hugs will have to be shared on another day!

On the trail of art The long-awaited Sprowston Art Trail has been taking part around the town. Until August 5, you can follow the trail of 13 sculptures made by local schools and groups to highlight the animals that are most impacted by plastic waste in our oceans. The artworks were made by children as young as four along with senior members of the community, and was organised by the Sprowston Youth Engagement Project. The trail, which was postponed by the covid-19 restrictions, includes works made from plastic, wire and packaging which can harm wildlife. Sculpture subjects range from seascapes and fish to penguins.

HITTING THE TRAIL: Teenagers with one of the exhibits.

Skatepark is back on a roll Following extensive consultation with North Norfolk District Council, Skateboard England and other official organisations, Sheringham Skatepark has reopened. Skateparks and skateboarders have observed the lockdown responsibly and organisers are keen to keep that sense of responsibility going. To minimise risk to anyone who wants to use the skatepark, everyone will be asked to follow guidelines which will be mounted on info boards. These include maintaining social distancing, restricting the number of skaters and asking users to clean equipment before and after skating. The new rules add that hugs, high-fives and fist-bumps are not allowed, and that dangerous tricks should wait until a safer time.

Take great care on our beaches

Market’s value!

The RNLI has issued an urgent safety warning to coastal visitors as its lifeguards return to beaches in Norfolk. The charity is stepping up its lifesaving service to coincide with the further easing of government restrictions on the tourism and hospitality industries, with professional lifeguards patrolling beaches including Wells-next-the-Sea, Sheringham West, Mundesley, Cromer East and Sea Palling. The RNLI is warning beachgoers following a spike in call-outs since lockdown measures were eased. The charity’s Nick Ayers said: “[With] restrictions on foreign travel, we know that this could be the busiest summer ever on our beaches – and, in turn, for both our lifeguards and our lifeboat crews. “So it’s vital visitors to our coast help ease the pressure on emergency services and keep themselves safe by following our advice.” This includes checking the forecast and tide times and reading signs about local hazards; keeping an eye on your family at all times; not swimming alone; not using inflatables; and knowing to call 999 in an emergency and ask for the coastguard.

BROWSING THE STALLS: Scenes from the Holt Makers Market taken from a Love Holt video of the event, which can be viewed at https://bit.ly/makersmarket0720

Holt’s Makers Market has proved to be a big success as the town reopens, proving it really is getting back to business as usual. More than 20 local independent makers attended last weekend’s market, adding to the growing buzz on the streets, The market is held every Sunday, bringing between 800 and 1,000 shoppers into town, who browse the market and buy from the stalls – which include food and drink as well as crafts and other goods. And while in town they pop into other shops, which also benefit from the market pulling people in. During July, parking has been free for the first two hours in North Norfolk District Council-owned car parks, and also at Bakers and Larners, which now houses the post office. The store has reinstated the deliveries which were being fulfilled by Budgens supermarket before the devastating recent fire. Meanwhile, demolition crews have been pulling down the remains of the store and discussions are being held about its future.

Hellesdon Parish Council

Let’s all go out to play! Youngsters in Hellesdon can now enjoy their new play equipment after months of being able to see it but not use it. The equipment, at the recreation ground next to the community centre off Wood View Road and the play area on Meadow Way, replaced the equipment at both locations, adding extra pieces including a train with a ticket office. The total project cost just over £66,000 and was funded through money received by development contributions from homebuilding projects in the parish. And now government restrictions on the use of playgrounds have been loosened, they are all set to be used by the children. The play area at the community centre was officially opened by Chloe Smith, MP for Norwich North, along with Karen Vincent, chairman of Broadland District Council; Hellesdon parish councillor and county councillor Shelagh Gurney; David King, chair of Hellesdon Parish Council and a district councillor; and vice-chairman of Hellesdon Parish Council Bill Johnson. They were joined by some small residents, too, who were keen to test out the playground. Ms Smith said: “This is really fantastic news for the young people of Hellesdon; to have brand new facilities to play and a place for families to enjoy as the lockdown

NEXT STOP – PLAYTIME: The brightly coloured train gets its first use at the opening of the play area, which was officially opened by MP Chloe Smith. is lifted will help bring life back to our community. My thanks and congratulations to the parish councillors that have made this happen.” Ms Vincent said: “It was lovely to see the play areas in Broadland being able to open again, with the guidance in place.” The parish council would like to thank the residents of Hellesdon for their support and understanding of the playgrounds being closed through lockdown.

Still here to help

NEW FUN: The new equipment at Meadow Way is ready to be enjoyed. Cllr Shelagh Gurney and the staff have been helping the community through lockdown by delivering prescriptions from local pharmacies. More than 300 medical deliveries have been made and the service is continuing for those who have been shielding and are still in need. Please contact the parish council if you require assistance.

Parish council’s important role STEP CLOSER: Hospital and charity workers at the ceremony at the new unit.

Work is under way Hospital and charity representatives have gathered to mark the start of work on a new cancer care and support centre at Cromer and District Hospital. They were joined by Norwich-based firm Pentaco Construction, which won the contract for the work, which will see the refurbishment and extension of the Davison Unit, a disused ward at the hospital. The North Norfolk Macmillan Centre is being funded and built in a partnership between Macmillan Cancer Support, the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the Norfolk and

Norwich Hospitals Charity. The building work on the £4.85m centre is expected to take around a year, with the new centre enabling patients with cancer to access treatment and support closer to home. The new unit will also free up space in the main building to deliver an extra 600 surgical procedures. Jo Haywood, chair of Macmillan’s North Norfolk Fundraising Committee, said: “It’s wonderful to see building work progressing and this will make such a difference to cancer patients living in North Norfolk.”

It has been business as usual for Drayton Parish Council, with councillors embracing the Zoom online platform and continuing to meet for full council meetings as well as committees. The office has been closed to visitors, but the clerk has been working throughout the lockdown – and in addition to the usual means of communication, the council now has a mobile phone number to enable home working. There is also a new website – www. draytonpc.info – and the Facebook page has been kept updated. The council has also been hosting regular public covid-19 community meetings online to help those in need, and obtained funding for PPE for volunteers who worked together to support more vulnerable residents. Looking forward, the play areas in the village opened up on July 4, and both cricket and bowls are now back in action. The councillors are always looking for ways to support local businesses through these challenging times and will continue to work with local volunteers. t You can contact the clerk at clerk@draytonparishcouncil.org.uk, or on 01603 864492 or 07471 552906.

As covid-19 took hold of the UK, many came together to provide shelter for the most vulnerable. Some 15,000 homeless people were given a roof over their head and an ambition of the homelessness and housing sector was achieved almost overnight. While the response to the pandemic has initially taken people off the streets, postponed evictions and kept people in employment, there is a risk that this progress could unravel. Looking to avoid this, housing association Flagship Group has used covid-19 as an opportunity to bring forward its Hopestead initiative, with a goal to end homelessness in the east of England. “We didn’t expect to launch Hopestead so soon,” said Hopestead managing director Marie Claire Delbrouque “However, due to the pandemic, we had to think

differently and ask ourselves ‘what else we can do now?’. We know covid-19 has the potential to further increase homelessness, particularly with social renters being most at risk. By working together with like-minded organisations, we can ensure everyone has a place to call home.” Throughout lockdown, the initiative provided financial and welfare support to Flagship customers, at a time when they needed it most. “It’s just been lovely to help people and take the financial worry away from them,” said Diane Monument, housing officer at Flagship. “Hopestead has been the difference between people keeping their homes and not.” Flagship will soon launch Hopestead as its new charity committed to ending homelessness in the region. Fsprowston

Paul’s proudest day For the past five years, Sprowston photographer Paul Macro has been raising money through the sale of his stunning Norfolk calendars. And this month his donations to a range of local charities have added up to more than £10,000. “It was the proudest moment of my business life,” said Paul, who took the photo of Cromer Pier for our front cover. “In a year of bad news and struggles, I am immensely proud of this achievement. However, it would not have happened without amazing customers who support me year after year, so a massive thanks to you.” There are dozens of local charities who receive support from the sales, and customers choose which one to support each time they buy at

www.paulmacrolandscapes.com. t Paul is also hoping to have one of his photos chosen to illustrate the delivery van of the company My Local Calendar. His shot of telephone boxes (pictured) is in the running and doing well, but it needs your votes to carry it through. Visit bit.ly/paulmacro to vote for him.

Horses are ready to welcome visitors Redwings Horse Sanctuary’s Aylsham visitor centre will be welcoming visitors from August 8. Opening hours will be restricted to Saturdays and Sundays, between 10.30am and 3pm, and visitors must book their time-

slots in advance. Entry remains free but donations would be welcome towards the care of Redwings’ rescued residents. t Tickets can be booked at www. redwings-aylsham-entry.eventbrite.co.uk

FWRoxham & hoveton WHB twinning association We have now postponed, in consultation with our French friends, the visit of our twinned villages of La Pommeraye and Montjean-sur-Loire in August until next year, the same weekend – August 12-17, 2021. All members have been asked to note these dates and keep them free. Social events are cancelled for now, although a get-together in August/ September, with social distancing if necessary, has been suggested. French Conversation is suspended for now and we shall review it later in the year, whenever we can get together again. Book Club members have had two successful Zoom meetings to discuss Step by Step, by Simon Reeve, which most members enjoyed, and The Sentence is Death, by Anthony Horowitz, which most of us did not like very much. t For more information please contact us, via Peter, on 01603 782733 or at peter_c_milsted@talk21.com

Let us know about you! Our individual magazines will be back in print from next week, so we’d love to hear all the news from our regular contributors. Lots of clubs and societies have been busy during lockdown so please let us know what’s happening.

Fnorth walsham rugby

with Paul Morse

Rugby is emerging from the pandemic following the governmentapproved Return to Rugby Road Map, which has six stages. Currently, we are at the second, whereby training in groups of six without contact is allowed. Consequently, the club will be running its popular summer camps. All are open to girls and boys, start on Tuesdays and run for three days, between 10am and 3pm, with different age groups each week: t under 7/8 (school Years 2/3) – August 4 t under 9/10 (Years 4/5) – August 11 t under 13/14 (Years 8/9) – August 18 t under 15/16 (Years 10/11) – August 25 t under 11/12 (Years 6/7) – September 1 The ages/school years refer to the year starting September 2020. No previous rugby experience is needed and you can get full details at www.pitchero.

com/clubs/ northwalsham. Youngsters can sign on for one, two or three days and it costs £30 a day. Each will be led by director of rugby James Knight, who said: “I’m sure everyone will enjoy themselves. We’ve used our creativity to design very exciting and broad programmes.” t Lest we forget, last season the Vikings won their league by a massive 29 points so in 2020-21 will play in London & South East Premier, putting them among the country’s top 120 clubs. Training on Tuesdays and Thursdays began in early July, with many newcomers joining in with the 40-or-so regulars. “Whilst I’m confident the current players will perform well at the next level, going up a league needed a larger squad,” said Knight. “I like what I’ve seen of the newcomers as players and people.” When the 2020-21 season will begin is uncertain, though there is a draft fixture list on the website.

Appeal has helped railway The North Norfolk Railway is back up and running, and chairman Steve Allen has updated fans of the railway on its emergency appeal. Thanking all those who had helped he said: “As of Wednesday we had received approximately £82,000 in donations and share purchases.

There is also a further £3,500 pledged, taking the total over £85,000, and funds are still coming in.” A £46,000 lottery grant and £160,000 from the M&GN Joint Railway Society for rolling stock purchases makes the total just over £300,000, ensuring the railway’s survival.
