from the editor Hello! It’s so good to be back in print. It may be a little different but we hope you’ll like it. When lockdown started in March, we decided to suspend our printed magazines to keep our delivery boys and girls safe, moving our coverage online instead.

Tracey Bagshaw Editor editor@justregional.co.uk @JustRegional

Over the past months we have kept our communities abreast of all the local news and events: information that affects us all about covid-19, heartwarming stories about how people rallied round to help each other and heartbreaking tales of loss. Yes, we’ve all laughed and cried a lot in these “strange times”. Fortunately, as restrictions are beginning to lift, businesses are starting to reopen and we are all beginning to look forward to getting back to “normal”. We have started printing again – initially covering all our areas in one magazine, but looking ahead to producing more in the near future.

01263 731520 Distribution: distribution@justregional.co.uk Advertising: sales@justregional.co.uk

We have put together a round-up of some of the things you may have missed, along with breaking news stories and the opportunity for our advertisers to let you know that they are open for business. And there will be more of the same next month! Please keep your news coming in. Although clubs and societies may not be running as usual right now, many have moved online – who had heard of Zoom before all this? – and others have plans afoot for the future. Let us know, so we can share your news.

t Our front-page picture is by local artist Samuel Thomas. We think it really sums up the fact that the future is beginning to look a little brighter for everyone. We will be featuring more of his work in the next edition, so keep an eye out for that.

Rainbows, beads and MARKING VE DAY – together but apart

People in Sheringham didn’t let social distancing stop their VE Day parties, with lots of colourful fun. Photographer CHRIS TAYLOR captured them celebrating at a responsible distance. You can see lots more at https://bit.ly/Sheringhamveday

Amelia’s beads boost morale and charities Anyone taking a walk through Meadow Way, in Hellesdon, was invited to treat themselves to some pretty jewellery and help raise some money for the NHS at the same time. Amelia Potter wanted to “do her bit” and sold beaded bracelets and necklaces on a stall outside her house. Dad Lee said he had hoped people walking past might throw 50p in the jar and take one to “make a little girl’s day”.

4

But in the end the 11-year-old raised £118, which was shared between the NHS and the East Anglian Air Ambulance. Lee said: “We are extremely proud of her achievements and she would also like to thank all those that provided items for the necklaces and for those that bought or even looked at the necklaces.” Amelia produced the jewellery in her arts and crafts lessons at home.

parties at a distance Over the past few months there have been some real efforts to make everyone’s lives just a little bit brighter...

A garage door in North Walsham was turned into a very colourful thankyou card for all key workers, from all nationalities and on behalf of the whole world. Jasmine Taylor, 15, and her dad, Richard, decided to paint the rainbow – and then Jasmine added her own special touches. “I was going to stain the garage and we both came up with the idea before I did it that she would draw a rainbow on it to say ‘thank you’ to all key workers,” said Richard. Jasmine wrote “thank you” in 12 languages – English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Chinese, Arabic, Russian, Indonesian, Portuguese and Dutch.

Brickwork’s looking brighter

Tired of looking at boring brickwork, sisters Sophie and Emily Watts had an idea to brighten up their garden – and it soon earned them commissions to brighten up their neighbours’ walls, too! “They decided to start chalking our path to brighten up the street. They then had so many lovely comments that our neighbours asked them to do theirs, too,” said mum Leanne Crowley.

“The walls took around nine hours and they used about 60 big chalks.” Sadly the rain muted some of the colourful work, on Acres Way, Thorpe Marriott, but Leanne said that the girls, aged eight and 11, were happy and proud to see so many people smiling at their artwork – especially younger children. “They are both very arty girls and really enjoyed doing something to brighten up our street.”

SKY-HIGH THANKS: Children at Sheringham Community Primary School and Nursery went a step further than most when they made their rainbow to say thank you to the NHS. The youngsters, all children of critical workers, created the huge rainbow in their playground and asked Chris Taylor to capture it with his drone camera. Picture: christaylorphoto.co.uk

Hotel wants to look to the future Aylsham’s popular marketplace hotel has been unwittingly caught up in anti-racism protests with calls for all British pubs called The Black Boy or The Black Boys to be renamed. The Black Boys has stood in the marketplace for centuries and managing partner Matt Miller said that while he was sensitive to the issue, it was not his main focus at the moment. “Right now, our main focus isn’t the name of the pub, it’s getting the outside area ready and getting ready to open up again,” he said. The popular pub has been busy during lockdown with its takeaway meals service, but Matt says he is looking forward to welcoming customers in person. “We can review the name if it is needed and if customers tell us we need to,” he said. “Until then we just want to concentrate on making sure we can open up again.” Matt said that, like many of the other 25 or so British pubs sharing the name, the hotel was named after King Charles II, who

What’s it all about? It has been suggested that the name The Black Boys has a darker link with slavery. This is a connection campaigners would like to be broken. Amid growing protests by the Black Lives Matter movement there have been calls for all the pubs to be renamed, igniting some vigorous debate on social media, with petitions from both sides – those calling for the change, and those appealing against it. was nicknamed The Black Boy on account of his black hair and swarthy complexion. The Black Boys in Aldborough is also said to have been named in support of the monarch. Many inns around that time changed their names to show allegiance and in 1815 John Crome, of the Norwich School of Painters, was commissioned to paint a sign for the Aylsham Black Boys, which he based on a portrait of the King.

Welcome for safe shopping In light of recent lockdown relaxation from the government, North Norfolk District Council is working to say “You Are Welcome” to shop safely in North Norfolk. To facilitate the safe reopening of shops and businesses, the council will be providing a package of advice and guidance to businesses and, along with Norfolk County Council, will be introducing social distancing measures through the narrowing of some roads, widening pavements and introducing advisory oneway pedestrian movement. These measures will be introduced in Cromer town centre and seafront; Holt; Hoveton; Mundesley and Sheringham town centre and seafront. It is also working alongside Cromer company Structure-flex, which is producing 7,000 specially-designed pavement markers which will be placed to remind people about social distancing. t In April it was revealed that the economies of seaside towns had suffered the most through the restrictions, with Cromer and Sheringham among the 20 places hit hardest in Britain.

‘Support your town’

Shantymen singalongs

A North Walsham newsagent is spreading the message that the town is keen to open and get back to business after a torrid few months. First roadworks to replace gas pipes hit businesses and then the covid-19 restrictions came along, and now Bob White, owner of the Showcase Gallery, is keen to get everyone to stay safe, spend locally and save jobs. Bob and his wife, Jan, started their businesses – the newsagents and the next-door card shop – in 2008, right in the middle of the banking crisis, so they are no strangers to coping through hard times. And now Bob is encouraging others to spread the word by providing banners to leave everyone in no doubt. “The buses are getting back to normal, the Market Place car parking is free of roadworks – let’s get the town back to some sort of normality, whilst keeping socially responsible,” he said. “Business owners have done their bit and are ready for shoppers to be able to shop safely. “The shops that have been completely closed until recently would surely be

There’s nothing the Sheringham Shantymen like more than a good old singsong – and they are always keen for others to join in. With many of their events cancelled over the next few months, they got together online, performing tracks for everyone to enjoy on YouTube. And they even invited others to record their videos to join them for a rousing rendition of The Drunken Sailor. Search for Sheringham Shantymen on YouTube to see more of their videos.

I am sure you will get a warm welcome. “By spending locally, you will be saving jobs. We all know money makes the world go around so please shop locally and let’s all help each other as we have been during these last few months.” Banners are available from Showcase Gallery for all North Walsham businesses to display once they are up and running.

Featon Christ Church, Eaton, has launched two online social groups which meet on Zoom – the Christ Church Crafters and a Men’s Group. The Men’s Group is led by John Ladd, and it meets fortnightly, allowing men who might not otherwise be able to meet up to have an informal chat. The Christ Church Crafters came together to make a Quilt of Kindness to reflect on the covid-19 lockdown and the kindness of people. The church has also held services on Zoom.

Have your say on new ward plans Local people with experience of mental health inpatient wards will be given the chance to have their say on plans for a £38m next generation facility at Hellesdon Hospital. Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust will be using the government funding to build a new unit to which four of its existing wards (Glaven, Thurne, Waveney and Yare) will relocate. A fifth, 16-bed ward will also be created so that the trust can increase capacity and reduce the number of patients travelling outside the area for treatment. In total, the wards will provide 80 beds – 15 more than at present. Deputy CEO Mason Fitzgerald said: “The project will significantly improve the environment in which our service users receive care, leading to better clinical outcomes. We expect work to be complete in late summer 2024.” Initial workshops took place in midMay to develop the wider design, which includes communal spaces, therapy rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, areas for visitors, a café, a play area and space for infant feeding, as well as outside space and facilities for staff. The trust is now running an eight-week clinical engagement programme to look at how space is being used now and how it can be used in the future. Design workshops will take place in August and September and the trust is planning to display the floor plans in the large hall at Hellesdon Hospital in the autumn, should covid-19 restrictions allow. It will also be posting them on the trust website – nsft.uk/hellesdonnewwards. t For more information, see the advert on page 24.

FLASHBACK: The launch of the festival earlier this year

Festival cancelled Celebrations to mark 15 years of Slow Food in Aylsham including the showcase three-day Food Festival in October have been cancelled as uncertainty around the coronavirus continues, writes PAT PREKOPP, chair of Slow Food Aylsham. This follows the decision by the organisation’s national board to cancel their annual meeting which was to be held in Aylsham as part of the anniversary celebrations, and would have attracted 50100 delegates to the town. Earlier, Aylsham High School had decided it could not host the traditional Friday night dinner normally prepared by its catering students. This double blow, on top of cancellations of the Aylsham Show and Family Learning Day at Aylsham High School – both key events in Slow Food Aylsham’s calendar – has meant that a packed programme of events, promotions and new ventures have had to be shelved until 2021. It is hoped to hold some form of Food Festival next year in the spring. We are particularly saddened to

disappoint our traditional supporters – stallholders, traders, suppliers and the townspeople – who have made the Food Festival such a popular annual event. At a time when traditional shopping habits are breaking down, panic buying, and an unsustainable rise in demand for nonperishable products in supermarkets, our message has never been more needed. So next year, we hope to celebrate, not only all that is good about local food, but what is now a growing awareness and appreciation of the value of local traders and suppliers who have been so active and resourceful in the community at this time. t To learn more about Slow Food Aylsham, go to www.slowfoodaylsham. org.uk or email info@slowfoodaylsham. org.uk. Base back on the front line The former RAF Coltishall base was once again on the front line as it was lined up to play a major role in the coronavirus pandemic, with a temporary mortuary built on the Scottow Enterprise Park, in Badersfield. Andrew Proctor, leader of Norfolk County Council, said: “These are such difficult times for so many people in Norfolk and sadly we know that more people will lose loved ones in the days and weeks ahead from this dreadful virus. “Setting up a temporary mortuary isn’t something that we ever wanted to have to do but it has become an essential part of our work in restricting its spread, mirroring what’s been done elsewhere in the country. “Doing this will mean that we can treat those who have died with the dignity and respect they deserve in these exceptional circumstances for us all.” The site was chosen because it was a safe and secure location positioned discreetly away from public view with sufficient space for specialist portable buildings to be housed undercover in a former hangar. The mortuary was dedicated in a special online ceremony by the Bishop of Norwich, the Rt Rev Graham Usher, who made the address from his home.

Photo: DUNCAN ARNOLD A LOW-KEY TRIBUTE: The base was also used as the backdrop for some stunning photos to mark the anniversary of VE Day and to show the team which has been working hard behind the scenes to keep Norfolk life running smoothly during the covid-19 pandemic. The multi-agency Covid-19 Response Team is made up of members from Norfolk police, Norfolk fire service, the armed forces and Norfolk County Council, as well as health workers. The photos were taken by photographer Duncan Arnold and you can see more at https://bit.ly/coltishalltribute

Shelter for people with nowhere else to go Homeless people with nowhere safe to go during the coronavirus lockdown have been housed in the Officers’ Mess at the former base. Following a request from central government that people who are either homeless or sleeping rough should be found shelter, Broadland and South Norfolk councils took action, renting 20 rooms for temporary accommodation. Phil Courtier, the councils’ director

of place, said: “Both councils have consistently offered the highest level of housing services, ensuring that those in most need receive support. “It’s vital in our fight against the spread of the virus that no one should face a lack of suitable accommodation during the covid-19 outbreak and it is our aim to provide people with a settled place to live for the duration of the lockdown.” Mr Courtier added: “This is only a

temporary move and each household will be found longer-term accommodation, if they don’t already have one, to move to following the end of the lockdown.” t The base has also provided shelter for asylum seekers who have fled war-torn countries. The 77 people who were living there a week or so ago are expected to stay there for up to six months.

Essential supplies and help for those at risk Sprowston-based Dawn’s New Horizon has been playing a valuable role during the covid-19 restrictions, providing advice and essential supplies for those in need. In a normal week, Lorraine Saunders helps women and men who are victims of domestic abuse – finding them help and support and a place to live, and raising money through her charity shop. But these are not normal times and she has been taking around 35 calls a week from from people subjected to verbal and physical abuse from their partners and those who feel their children are at risk.

There are also pleas for help from families who are unable to get basic food, toiletries and nappies – so the team has added food parcels to their to-do list. The shop, in Cannerby Lane, has had to close but it has become the central hub to store and sort the 60-or-so food boxes which are put together every week to be delivered to families who have been referred for their assistance. “It’s heartbreaking and scary,” said Lorraine, who is still doing her best to get people rehoused and looked after wherever possible. “They call and ask what can they

do and where can they go? All the refuges are full, and they can’t just leave…” Local shops, residents and organisations have been very generous with donations – including deliveries from Norfolk fire service and Norwich City Football Club. The group is in need of empty space or a building they can use to store the donations that are still very much in need. Anyone who can help with storage can call Lorraine on 07854 044680. If you need urgent help regarding domestic abuse, you can call the helpline on the number above or visit the website.

Pulling together as one community Little ones shared photos to cheer up their friends in care homes, people got together to make sure everyone stayed safe, and children went out to raise money for frontline workers... Here are a few of our local heroes. We salute you.

School still there for pupils Throughout the lockdown, staff and volunteers have been busy at Falcon Junior School, in Sprowston, making sure their pupils, their families and anyone in need are being looked after. The school has always been known as a real community school that cares very much about its pupils and families, often referring to its community as the Falcon Family. “It was therefore really important to us to set up a foodbank in order for us to help our families in this time of need,” said site manager Matt Smith (pictured). “The foodbank started at the end of March and there has been an amazing response to it, with many people and local businesses dropping off donations on their daily exercise walks past the school.” Sprowston Community Academy has also joined the team to help support their families, too. “We have been able to give some of our families and members of the local community

in need a lovely food hamper from the foodbank. There has been a variety of food donated, enabling families to make a number of meals with the hampers they are receiving,” said Matt. Matt has been making up the hampers and said he had been touched by the appreciation from the families who had already received them. Lots of individuals and local businesses have been keeping the stocks topped up and Matt thanked everyone for their kindness, adding that donations were still welcome. t Elsewhere in Sprowston, the elderly people who live at Redmayne View are also playing their part, knitting and crocheting red hearts to comfort patients, and traffic light hats for premature babies at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. During isolation, they are keeping busy by making blankets for a variety of good causes so they are asking for donations of wool – the more colourful the better – which can be left at the complex on Mountbatten Drive.

Photos unite Sue helps those the generations who helped her A group of little ones and their families were missing their weekly visits to the elderly residents of a care home, so they decided to toddle a “marathon” to let them know they were thinking of them. The “little visitors” go to Halsey House, in Cromer, each Friday, and during the lockdown they were missing their friends. Jo Betts, who visits with her daughter, Penny, said that 10 families took on a 2.6 Challenge to walk 26 miles between them to raise money for Friend in Deed, sharing photos and videos as they went. They hoped to raise £100 from their efforts but, in the end, they raised more than £1,000. t Visit https://bit.ly/halseytoddle to see photos of the walk.

A woman who is shielding at home has completed a 125-mile walk with her husband to raise more than £2,500 for the Norfolk and Norwich Hospitals Charity. Sue Gresham, from Holt, has a rare autoimmune liver condition and has to take steroids and other strong medication. She said: “In any other circumstances, Simon and I would be volunteering to help others, so we wanted to do something for the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, and particularly for my consultant and his liver research team who’ve looked after me since 2011. We set ourselves the challenge of each walking the equivalent mileage of the journey from Holt to Oxted, Surrey – for a virtual visit to Simon's mother – by walking around the outside of our house.”

DOING THEIR BIT t Liam Kelly put his daily exercise to good use – helping the people who helped him get better when he was born with a lung infection. The nine-year-old, who lives in Happisburgh, decided to set himself a challenge to help the NHS by theoretically cycling around the perimeter of Norfolk – 181 miles. His initial idea of a bake sale was scuppered by restrictions so he decided to use his daily exercise. Liam has so far raised £1,500, smashing his initial £500 target.

t Eight-year-old Sophie Cole was so moved by Captain Tom Moore’s fundraising efforts that she was inspired to complete a sponsored walk to help frontline staff. Sophie, from Cringleford, and her mum, Carla, completed a 10km walk, raising more than £900 for the Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust. Sophie, who goes to the local primary school, set her target at £50, expecting just family and friends to donate, but the total just went up and up. t A Big Night In turned into a Big Shave Off for Florence Fagan, who smashed her fundraising target for a sponsored headshave. Nine-year-old Florence, from North Walsham, decided to lose her long hair after being inspired by the The Big Night In telethon. The Colby Primary pupil was initially afraid people would laugh at her, but instead they helped her raise more than £2,500 – more than 10 times her initial £200 target.

Fwe’ll feature more of your sponsored events and local heroes in the next edition! 15

Waste helps your garden More than 90,000 compost bins have been sent out to Norfolk residents in recent years and interest in home composting has never been higher than now, with people spending more time in their gardens. It’s great for your garden, for nature and for you. Using homemade compost feeds your plants and improves the structure of the soil. As soon as you start adding waste to your compost bin, nature gets to work as worms and other minibeasts help to recycle your waste into compost. It can save you money on buying readymade compost, too. Norfolk master composter Vivienne Maskrey advised: “To get the most out of your compost bin put it in a warm spot in your garden, on either bare soil or paving slabs. “It’s best to put in a mix of half green materials like vegetable peelings and half brown materials like cardboard. “This 50:50 mix of materials makes great compost, that is not too wet, or dry.” Brown materials include cardboard, autumn leaves and shredded paper. The green list includes vegetable and fruit

Do not compost meat, bread or cooked food. “When it’s ready the compost will look brown, lumpy and a bit twiggy when you dig it out,” said Vivienne. “This is normal for homemade compost.”

Hire boats to sail again From this week, self-drive day boats, canoes and other paddle craft can be hired on the Broads. The hire boat industry has been hard hit by lockdown restrictions, and whilst overnight stays, holidays, skippered hire and boat trips in the Broads cannot yet resume, families can now get back on the waterways for a few hours to enjoy the special qualities, wildlife and beauty of the Broads, which will be a welcome escape from the challenges of the last few weeks. The Broads Authority urges anyone considering hiring a boat to think about ongoing restrictions, which may require them to plan ahead by bringing drinks and picnics or finding out in advance which businesses are open. It is also wise to avoid known popular Broads hotspots to help maintain distancing.

A stitch in time for carers With time on their hands because they were unable to do business as usual, a lot of local companies turned their hands to making masks, scrubs and face visors for NHS staff and carers. In Aylsham, the team at Moore’s Classic Car Interiors immediately realised their skills could easily be transferred to sewing scrubs and washable masks. Called the Aylsham PPE Response Team, they rang around local care homes and community organisations to establish a need and got cracking. Within days of starting the operation, they had hundreds of orders. Thanks to a funding campaign to cover the costs of production and delivery, they were able to gift masks and scrubs to workers on the front line and also made some to sell to concerned members of the public. The seamstresses at Lisa Dawson Interiors also transferred their skills from curtains and cushions to facemasks, headbands to protect the ears, and scrubs, using up fabrics from the workroom. “All of our staff have been furloughed as our suppliers are all closed, and we cannot maintain a safe working distance in the workroom,” said Lisa. “They are all doing this voluntarily and in their own homes and all materials are

Dentist steps in to help A dentist from Drayton who was horrified by the lack of personal protective equipment available to our region’s care staff has made a donation of vital face masks to help them. Gautam Sharma, who lives in the village and runs the West Earlham Dental Practice in Norwich, had to close his surgery as a consequence of the UK-wide lockdown and social distancing implications. So he gathered his remaining stock and passed it on to East Anglia Care Homes, including Halvergate House in North Walsham. being donated by me or the staff or client volunteers.” And Aylsham High School got involved, with its design and technology team redistributing its face shields, goggles, respirators and dust masks to Cromer Hospital and then making more themselves. Liam Whiting-Smith, head of DT at the school, said: “With encouragement from my colleagues I designed and made some prototypes of full-face shields from offcuts of plastic, laser foam and PVC clear sheets. Eventually, helped by my youngest son, I was able to produce over 80 face shields from home with the materials we had in

school, and donations of cable ties from S&M builders supplies in Aylsham.” The PPE was sent out to surgeries, care homes and hospitals all around Norfolk to help protect vulnerable individuals. And surgeries, hospitals and care homes in Hellesdon, Taverham, North Walsham, Wroxham and Hoveton were among those grateful for face shields made by Norwich School. Thousands of face shields were made, helped by major local players including Lotus – which helped by cutting visors – and Norwich City Football Club, which assisted with distribution.

The shows must go on – but they need your help A seaside theatre is appealing for public donations to help it battle back from the coronavirus lockdown. All performances at Sheringham Little Theatre are currently cancelled until midSeptember, with no indication of when it might be safe to reopen. Theatre director Debbie Thompson said: “We are a little theatre, and that poses problems. We have 160 seats but need

them to be 75-80pc full to make shows financially viable. However, under social distancing, we could only fill half of them. “Plus we have a narrow corridor and not much room in the toilets, so we are not sure when we can safely reopen.” The theatre is planning fundraising events of its own but it is also asking people to make donations via a button on the front page of its website, www.

sheringhamlittletheatre.com The venue is honouring refunds for all postponed shows but Mrs Thompson said many fans had donated the ticket fees or accepted credit vouchers, which helped the cashflow. The first shows to return are likely to be smaller events for theatre members and friends. Anyone keen not to miss out can join as a friend, which will also provide extra income for the theatre.

Green light for new site Plans for a £2.75m recycling centre for Norwich have been approved for land near the airport. The site, on land off the A140/ A1270 junction, will feature the county’s largest reuse shop and means that the Mile Cross site can be replaced next year. The design of the site has been shaped by local people, who were asked in 2018 what they would like to see. Andy Grant, Norfolk County Council cabinet member for environment and waste, said: “Starting from scratch on a large new site was a great opportunity to provide

a recycling centre that meets people’s needs, both now and in the future. People wanted easyaccess bins, smooth traffic flow through the site, plenty of parking and a reuse shop, so this is what we’ve done.” Now the new recycling centre has planning approval the next step will be to ensure the planning conditions are met before construction of the recycling centre gets under way in autumn 2020. The first stage of construction will be for the 400m access road to be built leading from the A140/A1270 roundabout to the new recycling centre.

Ben is first class! If you see Fred Flintstone in your front garden with your post, give him a wave – or, better still, pop online and give him some money! Postmen and women up and down the country have been raising money for various different charities over the past few weeks – including the team covering Holt and the surrounding area. Lots of the staff from the Fakenham delivery office have been doing their rounds in fancy dress and so far have raised more than £6,000 for Little Lifts, a local charity helping women undergoing breast cancer treatment. “When the idea was suggested, everyone was really keen to take part,” said a Fakenham Posties spokesman. “We decided on Little Lifts as one of the posties’ wives is having chemotherapy and she came up with this little charity. They make such a difference with their little boxes of treats at the start of the treatment.” About 20 staff have been donning fancy dress, including Ben, who delivers in Holt. “Last week he was Fred Flintstone, this week he’s a cowboy…” said the spokesman. He has also been a chicken and Luigi from Super Mario Bros. A weekly delivery from Arnie’s Attic, in Dereham, keeps the element of surprise on their rounds, and they go out whatever the weather. “On the hottest day of the year, one lad said he’d take Scooby Doo. We thought he’d be too hot, but he said ‘The kids are expecting it’. The response has been beyond our wildest dreams.” The team plans to keep going until the end of the month and hopes Ben’s example will encourage others in Holt to take part. You can keep up with Ben’s latest costumes on the Posties of Fakenham Facebook page, and you can make a donation at https://bit.ly/benpostie

Face masks are compulsory on public transport There have been many changes on the local bus services over the past few weeks, but the biggest change for all public transport-users is that passengers must now wear face masks while travelling on buses and trains. Only the very young, those with breathing difficulties and people with disablities will be exempt and you can be refused travel if you don’t comply – and possibly fined. There will also be distancing requirements and changes to the way tickets are bought. Bus services covering North Norfolk have been returning to pre-lockdown levels over the past week. Just Regional’s transport columnist David Hurdle reports that Sheringham’s number 9, 17 and 19 services are now operating a full timetable. While the X40 is not running, the 44, the 44A and the X44 from Norwich to Sheringham are using a revised timetable. The Sunday timetable was reintroduced on June 14, and the Coasthopper is running an hourly service Monday to Saturday. Its Sunday service is now every two hours.

The government decision that zoos can reopen is good news for Amazona, in Cromer. During the restrictions, the zoo kept its fans up to date with the daily goingson – including a virtual day out with Just Regional (www.justregional.co.uk/were-allgoing-to-the-zoo-today). Now staff are busy preparing for the reopening, posting on Facebook: “We do not want to promise a date of reopening quite yet so please do bear with us. We are working very hard here, so hopefully it wont be too long to wait.” The zoo also has a Just Giving page, www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ amazona-zoo, which supporters have been using to help the attraction and its 200 animals and birds.

Big Macs on the menu as restaurant gets go-ahead People in Cromer will soon be able to pop out for a burger after North Norfolk District Council approved a proposal for a 140-seat restaurant with a drive-through on the edge of the town. The restaurant, which will be on the

Co-op’s car park, off Holt Road, will employ 30 full-time staff and 35 part-timers and will open from 5am until midnight every day. A pedestrian crossing and refuge will be built on Holt Road and access to the restaurant will be from Middlebrook Way.

There had been some objections to the plan – mainly fears about traffic and increased littering – but these were resolved through redesigning the plans, which were given the green light by officers using delegated powers.

DISTANCE TRAINING: Sam Tyson has been continuing tennis coaching online.

Sam’s tennis tips go online

For those of you missing your games of tennis and are in need of some tips, Taverham tennis coach Sam Tyson has posted some special lockdown sessions on his YouTube channel. Sam launched Tyson’s Tennis Tips in October 2019, showing all his personal tips through online tutorials. Since the covid-19 restrictions came into play, he has been concentrating on coaching that can be done at home including hand-eye coordination drills in the garden and footwork drills involving tins of soup… “Recently, I recorded some footage in Latin America on my travels, before having to return home early due to the Coronavirus,” he said. “I've also included some footwork exercises and drills which viewers can do at home, under lockdown, in their gardens, using household items. My ambition is to get more people active and involved with the brilliant sport of tennis.” Sam, who has 10 years experience as a coach, grew playing tennis at Taverham Tennis Club, representing the club across Norfolk. In 2014, he became the head coach, where he grew the coaching programme size by 400pc. To see how you could improve your game, visit: https://bit.ly/tysontennistips

Teams’ boost for women’s football Wroxham and Bure Valley football clubs have announced an official partnership to further promote the game for women and girls as one of the most well-known clubs in the county joins forces with the largest girls’ football club in the area. The objective of both clubs is to provide a full female pathway from youth to adult and to offer provision for all abilities. Working together, the clubs will be able to provide Wildcats sessions for girls as young as five and with the opportunity to play football recreationally at every age group – including fulfilling aspirations to play regional football with the Wroxham women’s senior team. Rebecca Burton, senior women’s team manager at Wroxham FC, said: “Having worked on this partnership alongside the development of the Wroxham DNA over the past couple of months, it’s certainly a very exciting time for Wroxham FC, and for women’s and girls’ football in the area. “The vision we have for the future, as well as the plans we are putting into place with the support and dedication from the fantastic staff at Bure Valley FC, will no doubt see female football thrive in and around the Norfolk Broads in the very near future.” Both clubs aim for the partnership to be

more than an agreement on paper, with initial plans in place for collaboration throughout the age groups. Bure Valley FC coaches will become associate coaches to Wroxham FC and will be invited to club-led CPD sessions at Trafford park; members of the Women’s senior team will support youth sessions throughout the foundation and development age groups; Bure Valley FC players will be offered free entry to every women’s league fixture played at Trafford Park; both clubs will work together in philanthropic activities such as fundraising for charity; and the “Wroxham DNA” philosophy will be integrated into the Bure Valley FC philosophy, specifically steered to women’s and girls’ development. Lee Robson, chairman of Wroxham Football Club, said: “This is hugely exciting for the development of Wroxham FC as a genuine community club for the whole of the Broadlands area and in particular for female football in Norfolk.” And Ted McCarter, chairman of Bure Valley FC, said: "This partnership is hugely exciting for both clubs. “Girls as young as five can now join us through the Wildcats scheme in the knowledge that a clear pathway to women’s football is available to them.”

Exiles have something to celebrate Norwich Exiles Men’s Hockey Club have something to celebrate, offering a moment of joy among all the recent news – not only have they come top of the league in the East Men’s Hockey 5th Division, they have done so in their centenary year. Captain Simon Nisbet and vice-captain Sam Brewster saw the team – which has its home ground at Taverham Recreational Facility – to victory with a 21-strong squad this season, winning 17 of the 21 matches played from September through to mid-

22

March. Playing against 11 other teams in the league, the team scored 114 goals and gained 54 points. Only dropping nine points all season, they achieved their top place seven points clear of the second place team – having scored 35 more goals. What was extra special was to have won the match that secured them as league champions on home soil at Taverham, where the team battled hard to win 4-3 against East Coast seconds. Other highlights included beating rivals and

renowned strong teams Pelicans and Norwich Dragons away from home, which ultimately helped lead them to victory and promotion. Norwich Exiles were formed in 1921, boasting an extraordinary 100-year history of men’s hockey this year. Meeting at TRF for training on Tuesday nights from September, Norwich Exiles are always looking for new members. Call Sam Brewster on 07554 706738 or email brewsts@gmail.com.

Support keeps junior teams in the game There may be no games being played for the foreseeable future, but developer Lovell is continuing its support for the local community by sponsoring Holt Rugby Football Club for its second two-year period. Holt RFC, which was formed in 1961, is only a short distance from Lovell’s Heath Farm development in Holt, and the £1,000 annual sponsorship will go towards shirts for the under-7s and under-9s Mini Rugby teams as well as a shirt number sponsorship for the three senior teams and Colts. Paul Williams, president of Holt RFC, said: “As the years have gone on, costs continue to rise and we are much more reliant on business sponsorship to help support the club. We are very grateful for their generous contribution and support we have received from Lovell.” Holt Rugby Football Club has also had its funding assured throughout the covid-19

pandemic and beyond. The club is delighted to have been awarded a £10,000 grant by the Sport England Community Emergency Fund, which will help it to meet its financial commitments. David Hitcham, club director and

SPONSORS: Mini-rugby players take a run around the Lovell development in Holt. treasurer, said that the grant was specific to cover running costs to the end of July and, with the £10,000 government grant received from North Norfolk District Council and the business rates relief through to April 2021, this will enable the club to meet its commitments until rugby resumes.

A GROWING SPORT: North Walsham girls in action on the pitch.

Valkyries are riding high Among the representative team jerseys in North Walsham’s Clubhouse is just one from a Ladies team: the England Colleges 2007 awarded to ex-Walsham player Vicky Harris. “I’d love to add to that,” says Richard Polley, joint coach of the 30-plus-strong Girls squad, which was re-formed two years ago. Rugby is one of the fastest growing sports amongst women, with participation doubling in five years. More than 25,000 play regularly and England won all their Six Nations matches this season – there is a nationwide10 team semi-professional competition and 200 sides compete in leagues below that. North Walsham Valkyries have three teams – under-13, -15 and -18 (both sexes play together in the under-11s) and eight schools are represented.

t North Walsham’s Mark Webster has won the prestigious Eastern Counties Rugby Union Groundsperson of the Year Award. “This award is richly deserved,” said Rob Stimpson, North Walsham’s facilities director. “Mark has transformed things since he’s been in the role. The time he devotes to this voluntary position is incredible.” Richard credits much of the recent growth to the club’s schools programme, which is “absolutely vital. Two thirds came to us that way [and] without it many wouldn’t have handled a rugby ball or known we existed.” Matches and training take place on Sunday mornings. In addition to local “friendlies”, there is a monthly Eastern Counties Festival where they partner with

West Norfolk to field full teams. “I love the team’s family feel, everyone gets on irrespective of background,” says Ali Doe, 15, from Stalham Academy. “Whatever a game’s outcome, we always have loads of fun.” All members talk about the life skills it gives them. Teammate Tansy Petch (Broadland Academy) explains: “Rugby has taught me patience and that no matter what your background everyone has an important role.” “Leadership, decision making, teamwork,” said Beth Cass, from Cromer Academy. “There is a place for everyone in a rugby team,” said coach Sophie Bambridge. “We've seen so many come along and absolutely love it. It's great to see them develop their rugby skills but, more than anything, I love to see how the team develops.”

Looking out for older people Recent months have created unprecedented challenges for older people in our communities and those who care for them. Social distancing, shielding and self-isolation measures designed to protect the over-70s and those most vulnerable can increase loneliness and cause additional health risks if appropriate support isn’t provided. The effect of loneliness and isolation on mortality is comparable to the impact of well-known risk factors such as obesity and cigarette smoking. It can also put individuals at greater risk of cognitive decline, dementia and depression. Home is where most of us feel happiest, but the thought of not having the usual amount of face-to-face contact and having to cope with tasks that we usually get help with can be difficult. Here are some tips from the team at Home Instead Senior Care that we can all do. Keep in touch ... through regular phone or video calls, or even writing letters. It’s helpful to make this

HELPING HAND: Help your older friends and relatives to stay safe and well. part of a regular routine. Stay hydrated and well-nourished Good nutrition and hydration have physical and mental benefits. Stress and social isolation can cause a lack of motivation to cook or a reduction in appetite. Motivate people with recipes, shopping lists and reminders to eat and drink regularly.

Keep the routine Many older people love having a routine so why not plan a schedule with family and friends to make regular phone calls and keep the routine going? Keep busy Why not suggest to loved ones that they keep busy with activities such as reading, talking books, puzzles and craft projects? There are lots of resources available online and eBooks available from Norfolk libraries. Stay entertained Social isolation can lead to boredom and loneliness. Try to think of interesting ways to stay busy. Drop off some board games or books. Share a quiz over the telephone. Home Instead Senior Care provides tailored in-home support to enable older people to live safely and well in the comfort of their own homes, following the latest safety guidelines.
