from the editor Hello! The first merged magazine, which we published earlier this month, has had a really good reception – thank you! We think we managed to cover all our usual delivery routes and any hiccups have been ironed out, so “hello” to anyone who missed out last time.
Tracey Bagshaw Editor editor@justregional.co.uk @JustRegional 01263 731520 Distribution: distribution@justregional.co.uk Advertising: sales@justregional.co.uk Just Regional
When lockdown started in March, we decided to suspend our printed magazines to keep our delivery boys and girls safe, moving our coverage online instead. But now – as restrictions are beginning to lift, businesses are starting to reopen and we are all beginning to look forward to getting back to “normal” – we have started to print again. Initially we are covering all our areas in one magazine, but we are looking forward to producing more editions soon. This issue includes a mix of some stories you may have missed, as well as local news happening right now. And, don’t forget, you can catch up with everything we put online (and read longer versions of some of the stories in this magazine) by visiting our website or the relevant “Just” Facebook page for your area. One of my favourites stories is about little Alfie Clarke (pictured), who wanted a tractor to visit for his birthday. Did his dream come true? Of course it did – and it was lovely Just Regional readers who made it happen. Turn to page 13 to find out how. And talking of cheery stories, if you like the photo on the cover (and on the front of the last edition) you can find out more about the artist on page 24. Please keep your news coming in. Although clubs and societies may not be running as usual right now, many have moved online – and outside, in some cases. Let us know what you are doing, so we can share your news. SPROWSTON
Different name, same mission Set up at the beginning of the covid-19 lockdown, the Sprowston Coronavirus Help Group played an important role in making sure that self-isolating and vulnerable people in Sprowston were supported when times were hard. Although restrictions are being eased, the team of volunteers have pledged to keep on going, under the new name of Sprowston Supporting Our Community Together. One of the founders, Carol Pennycook, said: “Our community has grown together and we do not want to lose this wonderful community spirit. Our volunteers want to continue, our residents want to continue, our residents and volunteers want to help and to give to each other.” From co-ordinating food parcels to enabling people to ask for anything they need, from pushchairs to paint, as well as providing packs to help with exercising at home and entertaining bored little ones, the group has been a lifeline for many. Its latest plan is for a sunflower trail to brighten up the neighbourhood and give all participants the chance to win a weekend away. The trail will be set up around Sprowston and will include real, drawn and artificial sunflowers. To take part, join the group via Facebook and sign up. If you want to grow your own sunflowers, you can receive two plants – one for you and one for a neighbour.
SPROWSTON TRAIL BLAZERS: One of the works, made by Sprowston Junior School.
Look out for art on our streets
The Sprowston art trail has been reorganised and will now run for the first two weeks of the summer holidays. With lots of sculptures and art dotted around the neighbourhood, there will be a map available on social media so everyone knows what to look out for. The event, organised by the Sprowston Youth Engagement Programme, was postponed from earlier in the year due to the covid-19 pandemic after lots of hard work was put in by groups and schools. Visitors are asked not to touch the sculptures and to maintain social distancing while enjoying the exhibits.

‘New normal’ is
High-street shops have been open for a while, pubs are about to start serving again, and our town centres are beginning to come back to life. But there are worries that some of the safety measures are hurting rather than helping RESERVATIONS, GAZEBOS AND APPS FOR A NIGHT DOWN THE PUB
UNDER COVER: The new outside area at the Black Boys Hotel. As Just Regional went to press, local pubs were getting ready to reopen on July 4. Not all were quite ready to open their doors just yet, but many have put a lot of hard work into making their premises safe for customers to return. From taking contact details of all customers as they arrive and maintaining distance between tables, to a ban on loud music and the introduction of drinkordering apps, landlords have had a lot of issues to deal with. In Aylsham, Matt Miller and his team at the Black Boys Hotel have been busy turning a large section of the car park into a covered area where people can drink in safety. “We are taking the necessary steps to make sure the pub environment is safe for our customers to return,” said Matt, who added that he “couldn’t wait” to be open. “These include hand sanitiser stations,
a one-way system and ample space between tables.” The restaurant is also taking bookings and the popular takeaway service will continue to run. More details can be found on the pub’s website. Elsewhere, some pubs are operating on a booking system, with customers reserving a table for a two-hour sitting, and others are limiting drinking to outside areas only. Others have decided to wait and see before making up their minds. Authorities urged the public to show restraint, drink responsibly and remember social distancing as emergency services put on extra staff for the weekend. Assistant Chief Constable Nick Davison said: “I completely understand people wanting to take full advantage of pubs and bars reopening. “However, life is by no means back to normal and venues will be operating in ways we are not used to.”
Music ban scuppers opening The “no music” rule means that one of the area’s most popular live music pubs has had to put any plans to reopen on the backburner. Some 95pc of revenue at the Brickmakers, in Sprowston, comes from live music and as Charley South, one of the Brickmakers’ team, said: “We know from experience that if we don't put on bands, we don't get customers. “We have a handful of regulars that would come in regardless of the music, but sadly those customers aren't enough to keep the doors open. Opening just as a bar at this point would not make enough money to cover our huge overheads and would only dig us further into the debt hole we are already in.” The closure, which was implemented
back in March, means the pub has had no income for many weeks and the financial implications of reopening without any music gigs would be “overwhelming”. “It seems until we can reopen in a 'normal capacity' the Brickmakers doors will remain closed. It doesn’t, however, mean we are sitting on our hands while in limbo,” Charley added. “Since the start of lockdown, we have been broadcasting on Brickmakers Radio every day, putting out live streams and interviews with local bands and keeping the local community engaged with local music. We plan to keep on doing just that until we can reopen our doors and start rockin' once again.” Pub supports venues campaign – page 21.
causing some concerns North Walsham’s Market Place was due to be closed to through-traffic from July 6 in a temporary measure to enable visitors and residents to be able to shop safely within the covid-19 guidelines. But many retailers are angry about the move by North Norfolk District Council, saying it was “pedestrianisation by stealth” and that it would hit businesses because of the lack of parking and through-traffic. Bob White, who owns The Showcase Gallery, said it was another huge blow for a town which had already suffered from several weeks of closures for gas works before the covid-19 lockdown. “Just as we are getting a little bit of life back this happens,” he said. “Some shops haven’t reopened, others are seeing how it goes. I was looking to extend my opening hours but if this happens I will have to cut them back again.” Last month, Mr White had printed hundreds of banners and posters saying the town was open for business, but has now printed a new version, saying “No traffic, no customers, no future”. Fellow businessman Graham Jones, of Graham Jones Pottery, agrees with him,
ANGRY: Bob White with his new banner. saying he had read about the changes with a “growing sense of disbelief” and calling the council a “laughing stock”. “They compound their folly by ending the two hours free parking from the same date. That is plain stupid!” he said. And Alan Kelly, of Kelly’s Plaice fish and chip shop, says North Walsham has suffered enough this year. He relies on customers being able to park nearby to collect their orders and said the move would hit his business hard. “During the gas closures we were down between 30pc and 40pc,” he said.
“It seems to me that [the council] has no consideration for the businesses in North Walsham. It’s not just me – everybody has been struggling, so why compound it?” Market Place is already one-way and both Mr Kelly and Mr White believe the closure is unnecessary, with Mr Kelly adding that anyone parking and walking to the shops would have to cross a main road. But NNDC has stressed that all measures were needed to get businesses up and running. Eric Seward, deputy leader of the council and member for North Walsham East, said: “These temporary measures are being taken to encourage shoppers to support the business community in North Walsham. “We will of course be reviewing the measures we will be putting in place on an ongoing and regular basis to ensure they are still required.” Key changes include Market Place being closed to through-traffic, the loss of some parking spaces, a change to the time limit for free parking and changes to deliveries and bus services. A brave new world for our town centres SAFETY FIRST: Barriers maintain distance in Aylsham, where MP Jerome Mayhew and Broadland district councillors Jo Copplestone and John Ward sent out a message to shoppers.
SHOPPING: Queues, pavement stickers and distancing in shops in Sheringham and Cromer. Photos: Gareth Gabriel and Dave “Hubba” Roberts
As we begin to get used to something which is being dubbed “the new normal”, businesses and shoppers are finding things quite different out on the streets. Just Regional photographers have been out and about, taking a look at how Cromer, Sheringham and Aylsham have been changed to comply with government restrictions. There are stickers on pavements showing people where to stand and shops have brought in one-way systems and distancing measures, including Perspex shields at till points. There have also been hand sanitisers installed around Aylsham to encourage people to keep cleaning their hands. Both North Norfolk and Broadland district councils have implemented sometimes dramatic changes, with alterations to bus routes and traffic direction, which are receiving mixed reactions. Some say they are facing more hurdles to clear at an already difficult time, while others welcome the opportunity to shop at a distance. But it’s agreed that while shopping may feel a little unusual at the moment, local businesses have never needed your custom more. To see more photos visit https://bit.ly/ regstreets

DRAYTON & TAVERHAM LETTER ALLOTMENT CONCERNS
CROMER
Allotments for Taverham residents were set up by Taverham Parish Council in 2007 on Place Farm, a site that is actually in Drayton. The 80 allotments are the only plots available within Taverham. In addition to the many advantages of having an allotment, such as producing fresh fruit and vegetables and the positive effects on mental and physical health, the site provides a social environment for plot-holders. This is particularly important with the threat of the covid-19 pandemic affecting the lives of everyone, including those older plot holders in the “at risk” category. It is particularly sad that allotment holders have been given notice by Taverham Parish Council that the site will be closed at the end of its current lease in March next year. Plot-holders will need to leave by December 31 this year to allow time for the council to return the site to its original condition, which will enable the farm to be sold as a unit. Efforts by the allotment association and individual plot-holders to reverse the decision have so far failed. If the new owner is not sympathetic to maintaining the allotment site then Taverham will lose a valuable amenity that will be very difficult to replace. Cliff Hedley
Boost for hospital Cromer Hospital has been given an enormous boost by the Norfolk and Norwich Hospitals Charity, which has made its single biggest donation in its history with a £1.8m grant for the hospital’s new cancer centre. At the moment, most people from the Cromer area have to travel to Norwich for treatment. The new centre will enable more people to access cancer treatment and support closer to home. The centre will include: six chemotherapy treatment chairs with capacity to treat up to 36 patients a day; three new clinic rooms and two new minor procedure rooms, creating an additional 10,000 outpatient appointments annually and space for new cancer diagnostics, including prostate biopsy; a Macmillan information and support centre. The new unit will also free up space in the main Cromer Hospital building to deliver an extra 600 surgical procedures in dermatology, urology, vascular surgery and pain management. Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s head of charity, and trust secretary, John Paul Garside said:
GRANT: An artist’s impression of the new unit. “Last year’s spending programme was the largest for a decade. These grants help to improve patient and staff experience. “Some of the grants given to the trust have been done so using money raised through NHS Charities Together (of which we are a member), which includes funds from Colonel Sir Tom Moore’s £39m. “I would like to thank everyone who has raised funds for the charity to enable us to make these significant contributions. We value hugely the support we receive from our community, near and far.”

NORWICH
Theatre jobs under threat Staff at Norwich Theatre Royal, the Playhouse and Stage 2 have been told they could lose their jobs as enormous financial losses have forced the organisation to look at a major restructuring to try to save its future. Some 113 employees have been told that their roles are at risk of redundancy and a further 59 employees on irregular zerohours contracts have received confirmation that they will no longer receive any work. A formal process of consultation with all 217 staff is under way. The theatre has already incurred major losses as a result of a prolonged period of closure due to the coronavirus, and with theatres unable to reopen it is estimated that it will be at least another six months before the organisation can return to fullscale operations. The theatre’s chief executive has described it as “an incredibly dark day for us and for arts and culture in Norwich, Norfolk and the East of England”, and has vowed to fight on. Michael Newey, chair of the Trustees of Norwich Theatre, said: “The coronavirus lockdown saw us immediately lose 95pc of our income and this scale of ongoing
A DARK DAY: Empty seats in the closed theatre, which has been hit hard. financial loss is no longer sustainable. With no large-scale productions able to go ahead until next year, no clear date for when we will be able to operate at full scale again and no public funding intervention forthcoming, we have been forced to mandate the chief executive to begin a major restructuring project to reduce our costs. “We know that this is a devastating decision for our staff and every trustee
wishes that we had a different way forward. “Without government support we have been left with no other option if we are to make a guarantee to our audiences that we will survive this crisis and welcome them back to our buildings next year.” All major shows previously planned for the August-December period have been postponed, as has the panto. This means that there will be no largescale productions at the Theatre Royal until January 2021 at the earliest. Stephen Crocker, chief executive, said: “Our staff are the lifeblood of our organisation and my team and I have done all we can to support and protect them over these past few months and will continue to do so as we explore all options through this consultation process. “On their behalf I remain shocked and angry that the government is standing idle as an industry that has delivered so much to this country and is so vital to its recovery is being allowed to fade into dust. “I will continue to fight hard for our staff, our theatres and our whole industry but this is an incredibly dark day for us and for arts and culture in Norwich, Norfolk and the East of England. I am simply heartbroken.”

HOLT RAZED TO THE GROUND: Flames rip through the Budgens store, leaving nothing more than a shell. Photos: Jess Wright (left) and Brad Wright (below).
Rising from the ashes
Town rallies round after supermarket blaze Holt was dealt a devastating blow when fire destroyed the Budgens supermarket, but the town has vowed to rise once more. Hundreds of people looked on in disbelief on June 20 as flames ripped through the store, on Kerridge Way, and plumes of black smoke could be seen for miles above the town. At the height of the blaze, which started at 9.15pm, around 90 firefighters and police officers were at the scene, and there were still fire crews damping down at 3.30am. The following morning there was just a shell, leaving the town with no supermarket, with no post office and without one of its major car parks for shoppers. Concerns have been expressed about what will happen now – particularly as Budgens had played a vital role in making sure vulnerable people in the town were looked after during the covid-19 pandemic with food parcels. North Norfolk MP Duncan Baker, whose family owns the store, was quick to reassure that people would rally round to make sure that services would not be disrupted any more than they had to be. “The town and the community is remarkable. Together we will all pull through this. Whatever it takes,” he said. CT Baker Group, which owns the store, set

North Norfolk District Council has introduced two hours of free parking at its Albert Street and Station Yard car parks until the end of July to help ease the situation. Banners saying “We Love Budgens Staff” have been put up on the barriers around the store and the town held an evening’s clap in support of them. Elsewhere, stores are open and measures including pavement stickers, sanitisers and banners are in place to enable safe shopping.

Church calls for help to maintain burial ground St Andrew’s Church is calling for support to help maintain Eaton Burial Ground as its maintenance fund has nearly run out. And with only two years’ worth of money in the coffers, the church is planning how to cut costs. This summer it is experimenting with ways to make the whole area more nature-friendly, improving the biodiversity of what is already a beautiful resource for the NEW MEASURES: community. This will involve cutting Eaton Burial Ground. some paths between the lines of

graves and trimming the hedges only once. In the autumn, the area will be scythed and raked by the conservation volunteers. This will promote the rapid growth of an attractive wildflower meadow. Any practical or financial help would be greatly appreciated. Gifts should be labelled for St Andrew’s Eaton PCC Burial Ground and posted to the Church Office, 41 Church Lane, Eaton, Norwich NR4 6NW.

NORTH WALSHAM
New book looks at old town views A local historian has put together a fascinating book of more than 250 pictures taken by North Walsham photographer Fred Mace. Fred captured the streets, buildings and businesses of North Walsham from the 1950s to the 1980s and his photos have been collated by North Walsham Community Archive chairman Wayne Beauchamp to show how the town has changed over the years. When Fred started photographing the town, areas such as Dog Yard, Ship Yard and Catchpit Lane were still there. As the years went on, he captured their replacements, new roads and the restructuring of the town. “This book does not attempt to be an exhaustive history
of the town but to show off the amazing collection of photographs taken by Fred,” said Wayne. “It is quite a random collection as Fred did not create this collection with a view to it being published as a book. We’ve stayed away from ambiguous photographs, images of people, products or events and have purely focused on a tour of the town.” The book can be ordered from the archive website www. northwalshamarchive.co.uk or from Colin’s Sweetshop in the Market Place. It costs £10 and is printed by Barnwell Print, of Aylsham. To see photos from the book, visit our website or keep an eye out for more in later editions of this magazine.

Community gym is waiting to open Aylsham Community Gym is poised and ready for the go-ahead to reopen in the next few weeks. Annette Marsh and team were excited about opening their new gym at the County Building, but were stopped in their tracks by the covid-19 pandemic. During lockdown they carried out the extra painting, renovations and improvements to make the space extra special for when they could reopen safely. “We await permission from the government, said Annette, who is chair and instructor. “All the machines and equipment have been washed down to a squeaky-clean finish. New hygiene stations comprising anti-viral spray, paper towels with a ‘spray, wipe and bin’ mantra will ensure everything is kept clean by members and the gym instructors.” There will also be a booking system for sessions once open. Meanwhile, there are online classes on offer, including yoga and pilates, until the gymn can welcome members safely. Visit www.aylshamcommunitygym. co.uk or call 07895 759100 for more details.

He had been suffering from Parkinson’s disease. Born in September 1936 on the Larkman Estate, in Norwich, he was part of a large family, with four sisters, a brother and a half-brother. He attended Norwich CNS School and met his future wife, Pamela, at St Mary’s Church, in Hellesdon, when he was about 13 years old. David was conscripted to National Service and spent two years at RAF West Kirby on Merseyside and studying radar systems at RAF Neatishead. Alfie’s tractor treat Alfie Clarke didn’t ask for a lot for his fourth birthday – just a visit from a tractor. And when agricultural machinery retailer Ben Burgess saw his plea, they know what to do. On his birthday, a John Deere tractor – Alfie’s favourite make – pulled up outside his Aylsham home. His mum, Becky, said: “He is obsessed with tractors and wants to be able to drive a John Deere when he gets bigger.” The birthday boy got to sit in the cab and have a good look round the vehicle, which was decorated with balloons and birthday banners. He was also presented with a pair of branded overalls and a cap to make the experience complete “Ben Burgess went out of their way to bring his favourite make of tractor, a John Deere, to see him,” said Becky.
BEST WISHES: Alfie with mum Becky, sister Hollie and dad Chris – and the John Deere. “He absolutely loved the surprise and that it was decorated just for him. He is tractor obsessed and he is truly missing normality, like I’m sure a lot of others are. “We love the community spirit in Aylsham and have never felt so at home and are truly overwhelmed with what was done for our son.”

All good things come to an end
The last weekly goody parcels have been delivered to North Walsham hospital staff by its Friends group, ending 15 weeks of verymuch welcomed support. Since the covid-19 lockdown began, the Friends have been providing boxes of snacks, food and drink to ward nursing and support staff. Nurses at the 24-bed unit have been doing 12-hour shifts in full protective equipment during the crisis and the Friends responded to an appeal for refreshments. Chairman Keith Jarvis said: “Our weekly goody runs are a small gesture which has been well received.”

All aboard for an afternoon tea and a chat
Steam railway is back on track
About with Friends has come up with another innovative way to support its members – a dining experience on a bus. The team has magically transformed one of its vehicles into a fun and exciting banqueting bus offering, brunch, lunch and afternoon tea (pictured). It will be visiting members during the day with a member of staff from AWF making sure distancing rules are adhered to. CEO Helen Dalton Hare said: “They will be welcomed on board with a red carpet, and a blast of music. A well laid out dining space allowing our staff member to be two metres away will provide a great opportunity for some company. “It will give a member and their family the opportunity to get out of the house and experience something exciting and different. They could be the envy of the neighbourhood!” The charity is also looking to launch cake and coffee days in its Community Café. Helen said: “Some members have hardly left the house since all this begun, and
are now nervous to do so. An anxious member will be invited at a certain time – to be the sole visitor to the café for a break, and enjoy a coffee and snack with a staff member, a chat and some company.” The charity has spent the lockdown period coming up with several ways to support its members, who have learning disabilities and live over a wide area of North Norfolk. There has been a daily live feed on its Facebook page and, with the support of Morrisons, in Cromer, the team delivered more than 1,000 meals and food parcels to people in need locally, including many of the older people who usually use the Wednesday lunch clubs in North Walsham.
The Bure Valley Railway has welcomed its volunteers back for the first time since March and they are busy getting everything ready for July 11, when trains are due to start running again. The platforms have been swept, the flower butts are looking bright and Aylsham station (pictured below) is ready to greet passengers. The railway will operate a limited steamhauled service at weekends from July 11, with a five-day-a-week operation starting again from August 1. Extra trains will help with social distancing. The stations at Coltishall, Brampton and Buxton will remain closed for the remainder of 2020, and passengers are asked to book online in advance. For full details, visit www.bvrw.co.uk/ covidupdate

Libraries start to reopen Norfolk’s libraries began reopening from July 6, with safety measures in place to keep staff and customers safe. A total of 12 libraries were the first to open their doors, with the rest to follow in the coming weeks and months. Sprowston Library was among the first to open and will operate from 10am to 6pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays; 2pm to 6pm on Thursdays; and 10am to 4pm
on Saturdays. It will be closed on Mondays and Sundays. There is no Open Library access at any library, but books can be returned via the drop boxes and self-service kiosks. Returned items will be quarantined for up to 72 hours. Changes have been made to allow customers to use the library safely, including asking customers to visit alone or
in pairs and the introduction of a one-way system. Customers are also being asked to make sure they bring their library cards with them to gain access and use the hand sanitiser as they enter. Browsing will be limited, along with a oneway system, and visitors are being asked not to stay too long. For full details on all procedures visit https://bit.ly/2VBtjwk

Optician can open once more After keeping up with emergencies and essential work during the lockdown, Cecil Amey Opticians and hearing care specialists are now able to open all nine of their practices across Norfolk and Suffolk. During the covid-19 crisis five members of the Amey family manned the practices, seeing emergency patients, dispensing or repairing broken glasses of key workers and others in need as well as organising thousands of contact lenses to be delivered. Emma Amey said: “We were very proud to be able to operate during lockdown... We were able to see many patients with urgent problems including many that were referred to us from the hospital. We were able to help hundreds of our patients and dozens from other opticians who were unable to offer their services during the lockdown period. We also received tremendous support from many of our suppliers, with donations of PPE and instore signage.” Strict hygiene measures will be in place in each practice, including operating with a closed-door, appointment-only policy in the immediate future. Emma said the team was looking forward to welcoming all patients back into the practices once more.

Can you help the heritage centre? An appeal launched last week to help keep Aylsham Heritage Centre up and running has already raised well over £1,000. Like many other local museums and tourist attractions, the centre is closed during the covid-19 pandemic – and with no visitors or events, it is unable to generate any income but still has bills to pay. Geoff Sadler, chair of the AHC management committee, said: “We want to secure the future of the heritage centre through to next spring, when we hope we will be able to start running our successful fundraising events again.” The centre plays an important part in sharing Aylsham’s history, which dates back to 500AD and saw it listed in the Domesday Book. The centre gives visitors, local people and schoolchildren unique access to valuable local history material. Every year about 2,200 visitors pop in to the centre, which is housed in the parish rooms. “We know many of you are also suffering

Fridge looking for a new home
Maybe this strange year will give more of us the chance to find out more about places closer to home which are now reopening. We have lots of lovely houses and gardens in this area, and one of them is Mannington Hall, near Itteringham. Built in the 15th century, the hall is currently owned by Lord Walpole, who put in a lot of work on the gardens, which have been open regularly to the public for more than 40 years. As well as the Heritage Rose Garden, there are scented, sensory and stump gardens, the “garden for the less able”, a wildlife garden and a fairy walk. A new “four elements garden” is now in progress. The garden has always been managed for wildlife (long before it became so fashionable) and the estate has a fulltime countryside warden and assistant. A boardwalk provides easy access for everyone across the carefully managed meadow to the large pond, where the fascinating wildlife includes otters and edible frogs. This year spotted flycatchers, grey wagtails and green woodpeckers have all nested in the gardens. Damsel and dragon flies flourish on the moat surrounding the
The North Walsham Community Fridge is on the lookout for a new home. Set up to help cut down on food waste and to help people who might be struggling to feed their families, the Fridge came into its own during the covid-19 pandemic, providing all kinds of food and treats – including Easter eggs and books – to make sure nothing was wasted and nobody went without. But it will be closing on July 5 until it can find a new home in the town. Donations from local shops, supermarkets including Lidl, Waitrose, Tesco and Morrisons, and individuals meant the larder was always well-stocked with fruit and vegetables, bread, meat and other food which would otherwise have gone to landfill. And while anyone can go along and help themselves, the service has been a lifeline for vulnerable people during the lockdown, as volunteers arranged grocery deliveries around the area. The group’s Jamie-Lee Knighton said its needs were very simple. “It can be any location, as long as it’s in North Walsham and has electricity for the fridge to be plugged in,” she said. Help keep the music in us One of the area’s leading live-music venues believes that a campaign to raise money for grassroots venues hit by the sudden loss of revenue from gigs is vital for its survival. #saveourvenues, which is being run by the Music Venue Trust, has been backed by a number of high-profile brands and artists, including Dereham rockers Bad Touch, whose latest single has been adopted to help the campaign. One of their first live gigs was played at Sprowston’s The Brickmakers and B2 Venue, and co-owner Charley South said the lockdown had been “financially crippling” for establishments such as hers. During normal times, the venue offers live music every night, with more than 100 bands performing each month, but that has all changed during the pandemic. “With landlords only deferring rent, and no sign of rescue from the government, the future looks bleak,” she said. “Already we owe our landlords £28,000 in rent from March to date, and the debts keep accruing every day. “The Music Venue Trust is working tirelessly to try to secure a rescue package from the government for us and other grassroots venues across the nation. This
ROCKING OUT: Charley and the team (left), and Bad Touch. Band photo: Rupert Cobb campaign is vital for our survival. Without it we are just one of many venues that face permanent closure.” Marshall Amplification – a brand known for the equipment used by some of the world’s leading artists – has launched a T-shirt in support of the campaign. The “I’ve Got the Music in Me” T-shirt is inspired by the new single from Bad Touch, whose cover of the 1974 Kiki Dee hit – from their new album, Kiss the Sky. Charley, a musician who played her very first gig at the Brickmakers 30 years ago, said: “Our venue is just one of many around

Club’s membership boost A seaside golf course is enjoying a membership boom in the wake of the coronavirus crisis. While Mundesley Golf Club has suffered three months of lost income from lockdown and has had to furlough some greenkeeping and clubhouse staff, it has also seen a sharp rise in people joining since restrictions began to ease. Ryan Pudney, club director of golf said: “Fifty-seven new members have joined since lockdown eased on May 13, taking our increase this year to 70. “Some of that is people from other sports taking up golf because we, and tennis, were among the first to be playable after the height of the crisis. But it is also reaping the seeds sown during a membership drive which began two years ago through our proactive committee, including taster sessions for schools, girls, group coaching, trial three-month membership and being a friendly nine-hole club.” Golf in general was enjoying a resurgence at the moment, he added, but Mundesley was doing particularly well, with 400-plus members. The club had also been keeping in touch with members during lockdown through personal phone calls, emails, newsletters and online quizzes. “Golf will be changing as we go forwards, but thanks to the hard work that has gone

RUGBY
Lots of changes – now bring on the rugby Whilst the Premiership, the top tier of English Rugby, is due to restart in August, there is no news on when the new rugby season might begin for clubs below that level. It is four months since the Vikings last played, coronavirus bringing down the curtain on their 2019 -20 season nine weeks early. Last season was a truly memorable one, promotion to London and South East Premier being achieved by the huge margin of 29 points whilst playing a brand of rugby that was a joy to watch. Their new league, which stetches to the south coast and west to Hampshire, is one of four fifth-tier leagues, putting them among the country’s top 120 clubs. They last played at this level 10 years ago. While promotion resulted from one season’s results, it was the outcome of years of strengthening the club. That will need to continue if it is to establish itself in the next tier up, where they will be competing with far better resourced clubs, though the economic impact of the
22
pandemic is not yet clear. Unlike most clubs at this level North Walsham don’t pay their players and do not intend to do so. Consequently, the club has made changes to help sustain its hard-won position. The coaching set up has been restructured with James Knight appointed to the new post of director of rugby. He will have oversight of all playing and coaching, merging responsibilities previously held by head of rugby Johnny Marsters and playing director Alan Hepburn. Aged 31, James was educated in Reepham, debuting for the Vikings at 17 after coming through the Youth and Minis. Capped by Scotland at Under 18s/19s/20s, he played professionally for three years in the Championship with Bedford, then moved on to Western Australia, La Vila (Spain) and Glasgow Warriors, returning to Scottow in 2012-13, since when he has been integral to the Vikings’ progression as a senior coach and player. James also coaches at Langley School and Leicester Tigers’ Junior Academy.
One of his early tasks is increasing the size of the squad. Three new signings have already been made: Chowa John Chanda (UEA - 2nd/back row), Ben Rendall (UEA – no 8) and Lewis Smith (Crusaders – prop). There has been a reorganisation, too, at board level, reflecting the workload on directors, all of whom are volunteers. John Baines has become chair, Keith Jarvis stepping down after three years. Other newcomers are Alix Stimpson (Youth and Minis), Ashley Hicks (finance), Julia Hicks (hospitality and corporate events), Richard Lomax (marketing) and Rob Stimpson (facilities). Returning to North Walsham as team manager is Seb Anthony, a player at Scottow for many years including two as captain. He has successfully coached Southwold at youth and senior levels for more than 10 seasons. Facilities at Scottow Park are also being improved. Enhancements include resurfacing and enlarging the car park, a new pitch for the Valkyries and upgrading the floodlights.
TENNIS
A busy summer for tennis This summer, Cromer Tennis Club anticipates a massive surge in demand for tennis coaching from holidaymakers and the public as tennis is still one of the few sports allowed to be played. The club has laid careful plans to meet this demand by training up eight new LTA Level 3 coaches on a fast track qualification programme – Tom Fisher, Jonny Lawrence, Marcus Meadows, Alex Meyrick, Jim Pallister, Jack Seton, Lisa Stickles and Sian Stoppani – who will be able to deliver individual lessons to pupils throughout July and August, working under existing coaches head coach Andy Margarson and and Kelvin van Hasselt. This will mean Cromer will have more coaches than any other club in Norfolk – “and there’ll be plenty of work for them all to do,” insists club chairman Kelvin van Hasselt. The club will also have two female LTA Level 3 coaches on the team and warmly supports Judy Murray’s initiative to develop many more female tennis coaches in the UK. The new coaches will be qualified to give lessons from July 10th, with lessons costing £12 an hour, plus court fees of £5. The club has also seen a spike in people taking out low price membership – £25 for under-12s; £50 for under-18s; £100 for
those between 18 and 30; and £308 for adults – who are taking advantage of the facility’s 10 grass courts. The club courts are widely considered the third best grass courts in the country after Wimbledon. The club is working closely with Karl Read, Leisure Director at North Norfolk District Council, who has set up the North Norfolk Tennis Development Network. Club Chairman Kelvin van Hasselt said: “We totally support Karl in what he’s doing – and at the club in Cromer we see our role as a nursery of quality coaches, and ... in the years ahead a centre of tennis instruction nationwide for coaches, aspiring county squad players and tennis enthusiasts of

READY TO GO: The courts at Cromer are all ready and poised for a busy summer. all ages and abilities. That’s good for local schools, the local community and for our local hospitality industry”. There have also been moves away from tennis, with a new outdoor badminton court opening this summer. There will be group badminton lessons on Mondays and Wednesdays under newly appointed badminton coach James Salter, a Norfolk county player and in the UK top 50. There will also be individual coaching available every Tuesday morning. Kelvin added: “We’ve also invested in an outdoor table tennis table where the club’s table tennis coach, Mark Dare (Table Tennis England Coach of the Year 2016), will be giving individual lessons during August.”
FOOTBALL
Youth team hunt for new keeper Cringleford Junior Football Club is looking for a safe pair of hands for its Under-15 team. The club – which has 13 squads for boys and girls and around 200 children who play and train at Cringleford Recreation Ground – is offering the chance for a talented young goalkeeper to step into the squad, receiving training from a former professional keeper. The team plays in the Norfolk Combination Youth League. Anyone interested should contact simonbowdler@gmail.com

Sunshine and rainbows Throughout the lockdown period, Norfolk artist Samuel Thomas has been sharing his work online to cheer people up with a burst of colour. We featured several of them on the Just Regional website as well as putting them on the front covers of our first two magazines. Samuel, 33, a self-taught artist who specialises in colourful works reminiscent of the art deco period, thought they would be the perfect antidote to the doom and gloom of the past few weeks. “There is so much joy and wonder surrounding us in our lives. Sometimes we just need reminding of it,” he said. “I set out painting because I wanted to capture and illuminate all of the beauty and optimism that surrounds us in our lives.” The paintings here include a tribute to the Red Arrows at Cromer Carnival, which was cancelled this year, as well as scenes from the coast and Norwich. All his works can be viewed and bought from his website, www.samuelthomasart.co.uk
Hats off to carers who put others first A trio of staff members at an awardwinning Norfolk home care company are celebrating racking up 45 years of service between them. Doreen Taylor, Anne Brady and Caroline Simpson have each worked 15 years at Extra Hands, at its Horsham St Faith office, near Norwich. Anne, who is 64 and a grandmother of two, looks after her own mother when she is not on her daily rounds seeing up to 12 people all around the area. She said she was not aware of her own personal milestone until it was pointed out

to her, but the ability to help care users maintain their independence was what kept her going. “You have to be very caring and must want to care for people and help them keep independent as well. You must also be patient, but the job is very rewarding.” Doreen Taylor was a chef at the University of East Anglia before joining Extra Hands. “When I started I didn’t know if I could do it, but after two days of training they told me I was a natural!” she said. “You get stuck into the work and before you know it, 15 years have flown by.” Co-ordinator Caroline Simpson has
always worked in care. She says her frontline experience helps her in her current behind-the-scenes role. “Because I’ve been out there and done the job, I understand what the carers are talking about, and if they come to me with something that needs discussing or sorting out, I can appreciate what they’re saying.” All three have been working as normal during the lockdown, and doing a few extras such as social trips and shopping. Formal celebrations are planned for a later date once restrictions have been lifted further.
